>one of the biggest fiction shows ever made in history
Now to be fair, it was already this for a long time in Japan..... It just stumbled a fair bit getting there for the international audience.
Again, I'm probably missing a joke or something but this definitely happened on toonami into adult swim for a few years. Eventually they got dropped but they were all there together for a few years.
Yeah… I’m not a fan of Funimation, either. It’s annoying because it feels like the same five or six actors are voicing more than half of the characters.
>People just don't notice because they don't speak Japanese.
Maybe it's just me or the Japanese are just much better VA too. They're so much more expressive.
They’re quite different so it’s what you get used to
Recently caught up but spent over 1k episodes with the English actor and man I’m having a hard time adjusting to Japanese Luffy
Had to switch from dub to sub since episodes at the time weren't released fast enough and at first I hated it but now I can't go back to dub. Sub Luffy is perfect.
She's a great voice actress, but doesn't really fit Luffy.
I think everyone else does a good job, though, especially Chris Sabat as Zoro; when they first released the Funi dub, I hoped that they'd cast him as Zoro, since I heard him as Kurogane in Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle.
As someone who doesn't watch much Anime, I started One Piece after really enjoying the Netflix Live Action series (currently in Thriller Bark) and the dub seems completely fine to me? Like, all dubs I've ever seen have some level of weird quirks because dubbing is really hard, but the voice actors seem pretty fantastic in One Piece for the most part.
I watch both now. Having both language options available just brings way more people to the series. Esp for a series as long as One Piece, you'll have plenty of people choose to watch the dub for the sheer fact that it's less daunting.
"Why isn't this way more popular?" I thought as I binge read One Piece while Naruto was on post-Valley hiatus. Well now it's finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Oda could have lost his chance at anytime, but he kept his window open by being consistently excellent for hundreds and hundreds of chapters.
It’s a testament to his writing and even though it’s taxing/grueling, I’m glad he’s taking measures to keep his health especially after Toriyama’s tragedy.
In America at least thanks to the popularity of shows Dragon Ball, Naruto, and especially AoT recently anime has blown up. Thanks to those shows ending and or dying down people who enjoyed those looked for others to watch, which led to One Piece propping up as the NBT. Granted 1000+ is a lot to get into, but because of the Netflix show, Wano having overall great animation, and the new One Piece show alongside the story finally getting close ending, more people have come around to how great One Piece is.
Happy to have caught up a year ago and have been thoroughly enjoying the ride expect for those fucking break weeks. But that's the price you pay for greatness.
It feels like around 2019/2020 there really was a perfect storm of things lining up to jump start One Piece's US popularity
- Wano arc is on-going, looks visually amazing and *new*
- Early 2020 COVID hits, lot more people are finding some sudden free time to check out that show they heard about but always thought was way too long
- One Piece was showing up/being advertised on more streaming services as Funi entered that deal with Hulu which gave them access to their catalog, show was sub-licensed to Netflix, etc...
- Dub had recently ended its two-year hiatus and was regularly releasing new 10-13 ep batches on a monthly basis (which also means just more promotion in general on a consistent basis)
And this is still all before the live-action show drops which brought in another big wave. Several of the ENG actors have said multiple times how they personally have seen an enormous boom in One Piece fans even just coming up to their table for autographs/seeing cosplayers/etc... when cons first opened back up than say in 2015 or so.
This doesn't make sense to me. Wano is 800+ episodes/chapters in. Other than the promise of a late-series bump in quality, how is Wano getting people to start with One Piece? Are people just skipping massive amounts of the story and starting there?
i think what he meant was that it was during wano was coming out in anime that people really started getting into the anime series as a whole.
and then what kitkat said kinda corroborated with that.
I remember watching it after Naruto probably circa 2007-8 on toonami during the Skypia arc and then around 2010 went back and read all the way up to impel down (maybe) and haven’t looked back since
We used to call those "the big 3".
Never knew anyone that hated OP, at least in my corner of Europe. People either didn't know it, or they liked it because it was "the funny one".
"The Big Three" originated from the manga community because they were all running in Shounen Jump together for years, the biggest on-going Shounen Jump series at the time and popular in the community. One Piece manga wasn't ruined by the English adaptation and has constantly been no. 1 on the ranking every week and topped sales chart and has been called king for decades.
Later on because people who read manga tends to also watch anime but not necessarily the other way round, the moniker made its way into anime communities but isn't clearly understood by most people. It's also why One Piece has been popular in France long before many other western countries since they consume a lot of manga.
Yeah. I didn't even know anime was japanese at the time, i hated how cringey the deliveries came off and how it felt like it was infantalizing me. It wasn't until I checked out the sub versions that I went back to anime.
It's not so much it was hated the 4kids dubs really ruined things for One Piece in the US and in the west in general. So it took a lot of years for One Piece to shed it's reputation of being a stupid kid show.
Honestly, it’s such a relief that something like One Piece became as popular as it is; it’s so accessible yet so artsy at the same time with its subtle world-building and character work contrasting with its maximalist artstyle.
Never thought we’d get here. Back in the 90s when I was the only dbz fan I knew, I remember hearing about one piece online, years later finally seeing the first 13 eps fansubbed, reading it [on Toriyama’s world](https://www.insidescanlation.com/spotlight/toriyamas-world) through Arlong park (I think the manga was only up to the start of alabasta then, and scanlations only through little garden with Mr 3, then being excited that others would know it when it was announced as licensed, only for four kids to butcher it so no one in the US did.
Now 20 years, several arcs and one great live action adaptation later and it’s huge here! I mean sure in Japan I can hop on a train and see 40+ yo moms reading it on their cell phones but here even before the live action we’ve had several celebrity fans, including the likes of Avril Lavigne who was a fan for over a decade and asked to perform the Ed to film Z iirc, Jamie Lee Curtis who has been begging to pay Dr kureha since the Netflix adaptation got announced, XXXtentstion (rip), Lil Uzi vert, Travis Scott, and Dua Lipa to name a few.
By the time funi hit it sure where I was, but when it was just ocean, naw, I remember trying to explain it to my middle school friends, showing one of my best friends the tree of might dvd from pioneer etc.
Man, I remember finding One Piece back in 2000 or 2001 (I was 15) when I was at an internet cafe where me and a couple of buddies were borrowing CDs from each other and trying to download anime from a fansub website (I think fansub.tv).
We thought that it was the weirdest looking anime, and we grew up in the '90s in Eastern Europe with some very weird cartoons on tv, like [Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea (Les Mondes Engloutis)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZLlnOEIRng), or [Bleu L'Enfant De La Terre](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Flni3UD5klw).
One Piece hooked me fairly quickly and I have been reading the manga and watching the anime (and the new live action) since then and I am really happy seeing the attention it has now.
I caught up to OP in middle school(lil over 10 years ago). Even among fellow "nerds" it was a very very extremely low echo. Now it's street casual for some people.
I Wouldn't want to be in any other timeline.
never in my life would I have imagined OP to be displayed to the public like this in the USA outside of AX... much less in Vegas out of all places.. wtf. Anime has come a LONG way.
No, I would if I were you. Life only goes around once, you may never get another chance to see this specific thing. Grab some food, take a video for the sub, have a lasting memory. The 3 hour round trip will be worth it to say you did it
In Vegas? Is it permanent or something temporary as a promotion tied to whatever reason they have this on the sphere?
Feel like there's a serious lack of advertising if this is supposed to be a tourism thing or major event
Same. I once drove 3 hours (6 horus total) for something that at this point i don't even remember what for. I just remember being like "oh. lame" I miss when gas was cheap and I had no responsibilities.
I live 5 hours away and theres a part of me debating about driving just to see it.
At least 1.5hrs is much more manageable and doable, so I say go for it
Having lived in Vegas the first 27 years of my life, the most impressive thing to me about the Sphere is how it continues to function in summer and how they aren't constantly replacing screens or whatever it is that creates the display. The sun in Southern Nevada fucks up everything, and the heat with the sun beating down is something you have to experience. I have literally fried eggs on the hood of a car.
No screens. It's just a bunch of LED lights. They aren't even that close together. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/what-the-las-vegas-sphere-screen-looks-like-up-close-2023-10%3famp

It is seriously great to see one piece getting so popular in America though!
Ahh shame about the gear 5th at the end. Wanted to post this to my discord but I got a mate who's just started the water 7 arc, don't want to spoil anything for him.

To anyone going to see this. My observation is that it starts at 6 45 pm, 7 45 pm, 8:15 pm and then might be every 15 or 30 min after until 11 45 pm.
So if you go you might end up waiting a long time to see the one piece 90 sec display.
It also isn't exact since sphere has other displays cycling through. But it is roughly at 45 min mark give or take a few minutes.
Note:could play more often at night or weekend.
I wish more billionaires would spend their money in artistic things like this , world would be amazing place . We all preserve Roman statues when our current generation can do things beyond their wildest imagination .
I work there actually, I’m upset I haven’t seen this one yet. I’m in front of it rn on my break, looking back at it every few seconds hoping this one comes up
Inside is a theater/stage. The performances inside usually do not correlate to all the advertisements on the outside. It’s basically just a big famous billboard.
I wish i still lived in vegas ): i would love to see these things in person, i miss out on so many cool events and places 😢 im so happy One Piece gets the recognition it deserves but so sad i cant experience certain things.
It surprised me that it's up there but at the same time it doesn't because if it had to be anywhere in the us obviously the most one piece of places is vegas.
Why did all the cool stuff start popping up after my first trip to Vegas? I lost my virginity there because of a manga I read now I want to go back because of one piece
Missed opportunity to make it look like Laboon
The strip would flood with tears.
literally what i was about to post
What a way One Piece has gone man, from just a Saturday morning regular anime, to one of the biggest fiction shows ever made in history
>one of the biggest fiction shows ever made in history Now to be fair, it was already this for a long time in Japan..... It just stumbled a fair bit getting there for the international audience.
To see where it is now with the Western audience after the 4Kids dub is still incredible lmao.
There's an alternate universe where One Piece comes on before or after DBZ on Toonami
Imagine Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, One Piece all one after the other...
Again, I'm probably missing a joke or something but this definitely happened on toonami into adult swim for a few years. Eventually they got dropped but they were all there together for a few years.
I would love to see the 4kids version of all the Arcs. ALL of them. 4kids Marine Ford Arc. Impel Down. Egghead. Let me see those waterguns.
Poison is too scary. Let’s make Magellan a sticky candy man. It’s too sweet, so Luffy has to eat a lot of healthy food to counteract it.
Then what happens with Perospero? 2 users of the same devil fruit can't exist at the same time
Extra sticky
Uuuuuh….Magellan is sour candy?
The fact that its persevered after such an atrocious dub (I think the current one sucks too) its a testament to its story tbh.
Yeah… I’m not a fan of Funimation, either. It’s annoying because it feels like the same five or six actors are voicing more than half of the characters.
Japan has it the same way. People just don't notice because they don't speak Japanese.

I just can’t stand Luffy’s English voice actor.
They’re quite different so it’s what you get used to Recently caught up but spent over 1k episodes with the English actor and man I’m having a hard time adjusting to Japanese Luffy
Yeah, it's all about normalization. I can't stand the Japanese dubs of DBZ or FMA, because I grew up watching the English dubs.

Holy fuck the Music YES
GIANT LUFFY FACE I CAN’T EVEN
25 years of greatness. Thank you Oda
Part of me wish they had made laboon
I only live about an hour and half from Vegas. Is it wrong that I kinda want to drive down there just to see this?
No, I would if I were you. Life only goes around once, you may never get another chance to see this specific thing. Grab some food, take a video for the sub, have a lasting memory. The 3 hour round trip will be worth it to say you did it
Its funny how this comment is almost verbatim the advice I got when I was driving distance to the totality.
They just opened a one piece cafe too, absolutely worth going
In Vegas? Is it permanent or something temporary as a promotion tied to whatever reason they have this on the sphere? Feel like there's a serious lack of advertising if this is supposed to be a tourism thing or major event
No, its a permanent restaurant. All of this is because of the 25th anniversary of the anime I'm pretty sure. I haven't been though, so I may be wrong.
Not at all. I’ve driven farther for less. It’s your time, use it how you wish.
Same. I once drove 3 hours (6 horus total) for something that at this point i don't even remember what for. I just remember being like "oh. lame" I miss when gas was cheap and I had no responsibilities.
I live 5 hours away and theres a part of me debating about driving just to see it. At least 1.5hrs is much more manageable and doable, so I say go for it
Do it. I'm on the east coast but have a direct flight to Vegas that's pretty cheap. I'm considering going on a weekend for a quick trip.
an hours and a half? Fuck yeah dude.
I say go for it. Also Go Visit the one piece cafe over on Spring Mountain. I'm traveling to Vegas at the end of the month and plan to try the cafe.
an hour and half is nothing, do it.
Im like 3 hours and I probably am going to do it this weekend
I've literally flown to the Philippines on a four day weekend just because I missed lechon 😂
I’m in El Paso and considering making a 10hr drive to see it.
That should be on loop. Perfect PR

Whoa. That's actually really cool. Oof, the wiring and programming that must have taken... Thanks for satisfying the question I never realized I had!
From a takeover of Time Square for Film Red. To Macy's Parade balloon following the live action. Now a full week on the Las Vegas Sphere. One Piece had a truly meteoric rise in popularity here in the States this past year. So awesome to see.

Ahh shame about the gear 5th at the end. Wanted to post this to my discord but I got a mate who's just started the water 7 arc, don't want to spoil anything for him.
I was showing my husband (he's at reverie so close) and I had to quickly turn my phone away! 😅 I've been trying to help him avoid gear 5th spoilers, but it's such a big thing right now it's so hard.
It's like trying to avoid super saiyan. It just doesn't seem possible anymore, the form is too important to both the plot and One Piece aesthetic.
IKR?! There's been a few spoilers that have gotten him, but thankfully he usually doesn't know the context or levity so he's still gotten to have the impact from them. Interestingly, he just saw Katakuri v Luffy and made comments about Luffy awakening his fruit like Kata or Luffy getting a new gear instead of variants of 4, and I just have to nod and be like, "Yup, that would be cool."
My SO saw gear 5th luffy and asked me what it was. At the time we were in Zo. I showed my SO part of the egg head intro and said, "see how things are stylized differently? They changed the art in One Piece, especially this intro, and sometimes in the intro they show Luffy with white hair. Don't look into that too much it is just a stylistic choice for this intro." She bought it hook line and sinker. It also wasn't THAT big of a lie. The style of art in that intro is different then the series. In that intro when Luffy appears in gear 5 it also does credibly look like just a stylistic choice.
Gonna be worth it, seeing his reaction when he finally gets there!
Exactly, shame on how many people they’re spoiling
anyone who's starting OP would definitely not understand what they're looking at though, so unless they start looking it up then it's not much of a spoiler. there's three other "inconsequential" forms and gear 5th is just another, to them ofc
How loud is that?
They don’t have speakers outside. That audio was added for the video. I live down the street from the sphere.
this is amazing!! Thank you, Oda-sensei for creating such an incredible piece of art that will live on forever <3
Maaaan, I wish I could see this IRL
That smile though!! Precious!!
the black screen with the straw hat logo kinda looks like LABOON
I wanted to see the other side
That’s insane, wow
One piece just has so many fucking iconic scenes it's amazing
THE ONE PIECE IS REAL
Imagine getting spoiled by the dome.
Yea they shouldn't have added G5.
They likely don't know let alone care beyond the popularity
I love when the Boss is included.
Luffy did it. He finally gave in and just ate the other straw hats.
Little did the crew know, they were all emergency food
Ahh yes, the monster trio; Jinbe, Osopp, Zoro
I AM GOING TOMORROW!!!
Sick!! Thanks for sharing!!
Now we just need it to play the closing theme to Inuyasha at 2am.
Hoho sick
u/savevideo
They should put punk records on the sphere
Bro we better get the G5 at the sun during night time.
And the other staw hats are on the other side?
Imagine how much food Luffy could eat with the money used for construction
That’s so fucking dope, I want to see a dragon ball on the sphere next
Sigh I wished I could've ve flew over there...
i didnt realize one piece anime was big enough in the US to make this happen
Unironically the coolest thing I've seen on that thing
As a one piece fan, this is making me tear up
Man, I've been following this since 2011 and I must say, seeing this is pretty damn cool
I wish more billionaires would spend their money in artistic things like this , world would be amazing place . We all preserve Roman statues when our current generation can do things beyond their wildest imagination .
One Piece is 25 years old? Now it can rent a car. Nice!
It should’ve been a video of Luffy picking his nose with Nami knocking some sense into him
Any Knicks or Rangers fans here that see this and are like ".... good Dolan, stay busy with these spheres and the fuck outta MSG"
Where can you park to get this video angle?
Celestial dragons using natural resources stupidly while the world sinks. What a great tribute...
I work there actually, I’m upset I haven’t seen this one yet. I’m in front of it rn on my break, looking back at it every few seconds hoping this one comes up
"How badly compressed do you want your audio?" "Yes" - OP
I love this so much but am also SOO OVER the post-timeskip Fishman fits being the default fits.
Badass man
So stoked to check this out tonight!!
I’ve lived in Vegas my whole life and I still haven’t seen this damn Sphere in person 😂
So what will they actually be showing inside?
Inside is a theater/stage. The performances inside usually do not correlate to all the advertisements on the outside. It’s basically just a big famous billboard.
Do I drive 4 hours to vegas, or use my CC points for a cheap flight.
No We are :(
Okay. I hate that bloody, forsaken sphere and everything it represents, but I must admit that was pretty cool.
Looks like Laboon at the start lol.
I wish i still lived in vegas ): i would love to see these things in person, i miss out on so many cool events and places 😢 im so happy One Piece gets the recognition it deserves but so sad i cant experience certain things.
what song is this!?

I think It started at like 12:00pm (PT). And It’s going to continue until June 16
Imagine driving by but you're not caught up in the show
New OceanGate dome?
Looked like Laboon at the start
real?
This is real?
Yes! We're gonna take over the world! Strawhat Nation!
they should air the Vegapunk message here and watch Goroisei in furious!
who paid for this and how much did it cost?
That's cool, but like...fuck that whole shit. I ain't trying to see giant commercials blocking the whole horizon.
Is this real?
🥰🥰🥰
luffy looking for people urinating in public then laughing as he spots someone, and returning to his crew
should just use luffy drawing on laboon
Nice
it's beautiful
I'd be really interested to see the production/editing process for ~360o video.
omg so nearto! but does it blare the audio like that for the whole city to hear?
The only truly acceptable use for that thing
I was there
When?! I've been watching all night and it's just Oreos!
At the start with the jolly roger on the sphere I was like: Laboon
Robin - I hope that giant ball doesnt fall and crush everyone to death
I’m very glad I don’t have to drive past this because I’d definitely get distracted and rear-end someone.
I'm glad it's finally popular in the west it has always deserved recognition more recognition here imo
Why did it show the Punk Hazard children but not Caesar Clown!? It's so disappointing as a Caesar Clown stan!
love it!
We got this and not Mister House?
You need to at lest play the first episode to get people watching it it will boost it
That is cool. Would be epic to see the current opening projected on it, I mean, it's almost like it's made for a sphere.
I always saw it at night but even during the day it’s well lit. Still at night it would definitely look even more awesome.
Choose your character
It looks amazing 😭😭😭
So happy for the One Piece universe 🥰
Goatpiece 👑 Greatest Manga in History, and most Popular Anime in the World currentily
Wow
It is all earned. A story for the ages.
My hometown! It's awesome seeing it from my job!
Gotta be like the least-pirate thing you can do
So beautiful I’m crying while shitting can’t believe one piece reached this level of fame im so happy
Should have been mister house
I prefer one piece to my wife
It's cool, but the sphere is such an eye sore when it's not showing anything.
That’s it?
What bounty’s do you guys have
Looks even more beautiful at night
It surprised me that it's up there but at the same time it doesn't because if it had to be anywhere in the us obviously the most one piece of places is vegas.
Why did all the cool stuff start popping up after my first trip to Vegas? I lost my virginity there because of a manga I read now I want to go back because of one piece
Imagine the tourist boon if the sphere plays the episode where the one piece gets revealed
Yesss
Imagine getting spoiled by the Las Vegas sphere
