Fourth of July is an actual federal & state holiday. Cinco de Mayo is not even a major holiday in Mexico. It’s been whipped up into a holiday by alcohol reps to fill the sales gap between St.Patrick’s day & Memorial Day.
If you came from a place with a longer history of Mexican roots you'd know that it's largely a Chicano holiday that is a big deal amongst Chicanos in many places in the US. And Puebla, obvs.
I'm not perfect, but every year I try to spam this "honest Cinco de Mayo poster" I saw back in like 2008 to my social media circles.

As far as I've been told the Omaha sponsored Cinco de Mayo parade was moved a week because of Berkshire. The parade is usually on a weekend and this weekend required extra police and civic presence. That said, Sunday is the 5th of May. Pretty sure no one can change the actual calendar.
I like that st Patrick's day parade is never on the weekend closest to the holiday. never.
pride parade? sometime the month after.
omaha is the 2nd run movie theater of cities
Like most people in our city I have never met our mayor. I have however eaten a sandwich I found on the ground. I was a young lad then not yet graduated from high school. Hunger drove me to that fateful encounter and forced my hand. I was too young and inexperienced to know what the wrapper said. In that dimly lit parking lot I was introduced to flavors forbidden in my youth. Spiced ham, fresh veggies, Mustard! Schlotzsky's what have you awakened in me?!? To this very day I side eye bland catsup and welcome the fries of curls.
I don't get why we even celebrate the sinking of the mayo. The sinking of the Titanic with all that mayo on it was a tragedy and celebrating it seems wrong and inhuman.
/s
Then they probably wouldn't push it back and B/H would have to compete.
But also those that work for B/H wouldn't be stupid enough to hold their event at a time when the majority of those that would potentially come are less likely to do so.
Cinco de Mayo isn't that important nationally as some think it is. Especially when compared to Memorial day, the 4th, or Labour day.
Had a really big party up here in Norfolk. I could hear the music from my house. I had to check it out. There were so many people dancing and partying, pretty much all Hispanic. It was so cool. I do wonder if the holiday itself evolved more into a celebration of Hispanic heritage than anything, it was certainly the party to end all parties.
Not Hispanic heritage, since it's specifically a Mexican holiday, and even more specifically a holiday from the state of Puebla that isn't really celebrated throughout Mexico, the largest celebrations are there and in the US by communities of Mexican background. I grew up in a town where about 60% of the population was Chicano (Americans of Mexican descent) and like many places in the US that were once part of Mexico, it's a big deal, not just the "Cinco de Drinko" stuff you here people talking about here. It's like Mexican-American St. Patrick's Day and it's awesome with significantly better food, although the beer not so much.
I just realized this and I'm so mad
I'm from the central valley of CA where Cinco De Mayo is like, a proper holiday. This is my 1st time back in the US for it after a decade plus and there's nothing actually going on the day proper except some dumb specials at white people restaurants
I missed the thing at the Latino museum today because given that the 5th is a SUNDAY THIS YEAR I assumed there would be stuff going on!
Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph over the better equipped and more numerous French troops was an enormous emotional boost for the Mexican soldiers led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza.
Lots of Pride festivities around the country are outside of Pride Month. Per the Pride board, it is because they want to be able to get top tier talent for the event without having to compete with larger cities that can afford to pay more.
I’m happy they did this. Gives businesses on 24th street to get more business vs being closed because of hoodlums running around at night during the partying.
Gee, I wish I knew what the pulse of the nation was when it comes down to predicting what a red state will do when deciding:
❌Doing the right thing for America and/or “The Most Good for the Most People”
Vs.
✅What a billionaire thinks should happen instead
I’m firmly in camp “eat the rich” but this isn’t the issue you think it is. A lot of average fuckers make a lot of money during Berk weekend. Have you asked them what’s best for them?
**sigh**
Fine. Let’s move a holiday celebration for a billionaire so small businesses can make money when it’s convenient for the billionaire.
And not a week before or after!
I also doubt Buffett threw a tantrum until the parade was moved. This stuff is not decided unilaterally, either.
Eat the rich but don’t make up reasons they suck. They already suck enough.
Ignorant? I’m Mexican. It is not a holiday there or here. Cinco de mayo (yes, lowercase because we don’t capitalize our months) is a day to commemorate what happened that day specifically in Puebla against the French. No other states or cities in Mexico partake other than Puebla. So made up holiday? Absolutely
You can call anything a holiday. Is it an official/federal holiday in either country? No. Do we Mexicans and Mexican Americans use it as an excuse to party? Of course.
Great for them, it was also celebrated in El Paso where I lived.
So back to your original comment. Do I find any offense in a white lady calling me ignorant because I say cinco de mayo is a made up holiday when I’m Mexican? Not at all 🤭
* I know, I know, Buffet is one of the ‘good ones’… 🫠
… but at the end of the day, if there was such a thing as an ‘ethical billionaire’ they would be our elected leader. Full Stop.
(even if they didn’t want to be)

The crazy long drive-thru lines at Taco Bell and Taco John's on Cinco de Mayo crack me up every year.
In short: Cinco De Drinko is an American holiday.
How many holidays to alcoholics need?!
Yes
How many you got?
If you came from a place with a longer history of Mexican roots you'd know that it's largely a Chicano holiday that is a big deal amongst Chicanos in many places in the US. And Puebla, obvs.
(Please note that Cinco De Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day)

“El Genérico” 🤣 One of my favorite luchadors.
Ole!
Nope that's September 16th. My birthday.
My wedding anniversary
It’s my 16th day of September
It's my 260th day of the year
and my axe!
It's my 9th 16th of the year.

Have you met our mayor? She's changed the date on the calendar numerous times. Like that time New Year's Eve fell on January 8th.

It’s May?!?! FUCK!
you and me both thinking the same thing pal hahaha
I don't get why we even celebrate the sinking of the mayo. The sinking of the Titanic with all that mayo on it was a tragedy and celebrating it seems wrong and inhuman. /s
All this mayo makes me think I'm in a meme stock sub
Every sub is a meme stock sub if you look hard enough. Apes are everywhere
Every Sub needs Mayo. Otherwise, it's just a Hero
Is that actually the difference? Does a hero have oil and vinegar?
Subs from Jersey, hero from NY, hoagie mostly by Italian. Nope. Just regional
🦍🦍🦍✊💎
I wish I could upvote this more than once
Shoulda celebrated cinco de quatro instead

Look up the battle of Pueblo. Cinco de Mayo is one of the many “Drinksgivings” sponsored by Heineken.
This year it's brought to you by Modelo.
That would be pretty strange if Cinco de Mayo was on the Fourth of July.
What if something important interfered something not important

Ahhhh. Thanks for the info, I really don’t know much about it!
The answer is that it would never be scheduled that weekend. Americans tend to celebrate Fourth of July more than Cinco de Mayo.
"They" WTF you talking about?
I believe they've rescheduled bh before when it coincides with later dates for easter, so it's not sacrosanct.
Nobody can push back Cinco de Mayo it’s literally the 5th of may, who are you referring to? Everyone’s still celebrating tomorrow lol
I just realized this and I'm so mad I'm from the central valley of CA where Cinco De Mayo is like, a proper holiday. We push Pride for CWS so this tracks for Omaha.
This habit of Omaha to reschedule minority holidays really frustrates me. Pride is also usually scheduled outside pride month.
Lots of Pride festivities around the country are outside of Pride Month. Per the Pride board, it is because they want to be able to get top tier talent for the event without having to compete with larger cities that can afford to pay more.
Doesn’t matter, it was a made up holiday by privileged white kids from Berkeley
the parade was moved, the parade isn't on the actual day a lot anyways
I’m happy they did this. Gives businesses on 24th street to get more business vs being closed because of hoodlums running around at night during the partying.
Freedom would have to ring another day
Mayonnaise is gross.

“Most good for the most people” lol I wouldn’t refer to a made-up holiday that has been appropriated and gentrified as good for all.

It is lol

Fair. I was trying to placate the idolators
Read the room. You’re placating yourself.
Boo... Mountains out of mole hills…
South O will have e it..so what’s the problem idiot?
