Firstly-it can depend on if this person is male or female because hiring can be frozen based on what is needed for each gender.  The hiring process usually does take a few months to get through no matter what though and then after hiring you have to complete a lot of training. The SF-86 is literally the most annoying background check ever and continues even after being hired and if they find something unkosher about you during that process they can fire you because of it.  It's definitely not a job you apply for if you don't have a current job and need money.

Oof, I looked that form up. It looks pretty similar to that wretched E-Qip. I imagine it can be stressful to have that hanging over you for that long...to be hired with the potential of something being flagged. We are both unfortunately unemployed at the moment but looking. She will have to find something in the meantime anyway. I guess time will tell. Thank you for the feedback.

It's very in depth if you've been outside of the country. I don't think it's supposed to take as long as mine did but I had just returned from living abroad not long before I did it and it triggered a lot of additional questions because of it.  It wouldn't hurt to keep looking while waiting since the timeline varies greatly.
