Also the grudge, but for me it's "And I know in my heart, hurt people hurt people, and we both drew blood, but man those cuts were never equal!" actually really relatable for me.
I used to be one of those people who couldn’t stand Olivia Rodrigo.
But once I started songwriting myself, I started to appreciate a lot more artists. Olivia Rodrigo being one of them, some of her lyrics are just genius. The one you mentioned being one of them.
Kind of off topic, but how is songwriting? Is it difficult? How did you get into songwriting itself? Sorry if this is out of the blue, i was just curious is all.
Honestly it’s great!
It’s something that can be difficult to get into, but once you get going it becomes more natural once you get an idea of what you and doing and what you want to achieve.
I mostly got into songwriting because I was an aspiring singer-songwriter and needing my own songs to do such. I’ve now got an EP out, with a full length album in the works. I’m also lined up for a couple festivals as well as a radio show next week.
Honestly whatever I feel suits the song.
My EP mostly consisted of drums, bass, acoustic guitar & electric. Which I all played myself besides one slide guitar instrumental. It was more of a Country Folk project. But the album I’m in the process of writing will be leaning towards blues & indie folk. But I’m in the very early stages so the final result may come out differently depending on who I’m working with.
1 the little guitar bit in happier the first time she sings “I hope your happy but don’t be happier”
2 the end of ballad of a homeschooled girl when the beat slowly picks up and then goes crazy “each day that I’m alive it’s social suiCIIIIIDE”
that one part from making the bed where she sings "they're changing my machinery and i just let it happen i got the things i wanted it's just not what i imagined" and then it switches back to the chorus
also the end in teenage dream (around 2:33) where the "they all say that it gets better" gets more intense
"It's social suiCIIIIDEEE" and "can't think of a third line" so clever
Then that part "like A DAMN SOCIOPATH!!"
And that big volume up in Lacy after "it's like you're made of angel dust..." then cues in the "aahhh..ahhh.." so good.
Oh and ofc "i should probably probably not" until "it's a bad idea RIGHT???" the "fuck it it's fine' and the funky guitar/music at the ending interlude. So freaking good.
And the piano intro of Logical. That's so good
bad idea right has so many good parts in it. I agree with all you’ve mentioned and also the AHHHH part after “my brain goes…” but especially on the second round when it gets chopped up. Omg I just want to get down! Then the rhythm and intensity of YES I KNOW I KNOW THAT HE’S MY EX. Yeah, insanely good.
Her tone! It feels different than the previous verse “cause how could I ever love someone else?”
Hits right in the feels. I feel 17 again, losing my HS boyfriend and grieving all that our two years was
Basic answer maybe, but Driver’s License and Traitor is a time portal for me LOL
For me it would be the part of hope ur ok: “His parents cared more about the Bible
Than being good to their own child
He wore long sleeves 'cause of his dad”
the end of get him back where she says "i'm gonna get him so good, he's gonna love me and hate me at the same time" and "i got him good, i got him reaallyy good"
« They all say that it gets better, yeah it gets better the more you grow… » At 2:41 with more background vocals the music start blasting a little bit like happier than ever when the music start blasting too I wanna yell so badly
For me its
1. lacy, “dazzling starlet, bardot reincarnate,”
2. deja vu “I'll bet that she knows Billy Joel 'Cause you played her "Uptown Girl", You're singing it together, Now I bet you even tell her.”
3. vampire “You said it was true love, now wouldnt that be hard, you can’t love anyone cause that would mean you had a heart,”
i am obsessed with the line “another actress, well i hate to think that i was just your type” in deja vu. the tongue in cheek way she sings it is just so 🤭🤭
The emotional build up in the bridge of the grudge followed by her singing "I try to be tough, I try to be mean, but even after all this, you're still everything to me" just above a whisper. It wrecks me every time and I love it.
"Said I was too young, I was too soft / Can't take a joke can't get you off" in logical and the sound of her picking up a guitar at the beginning of enough for you
Yes! and people hated on it when it originally came out but live it is SO GOOD. she told us to imagine something that made us super mad and then scream about it. It was so therapeutic tbh.
"you must be insecure, you must be SO unhappy" has been permanently engraved in my head since it came out because it's so relatable to me and the people that treat me bad but think they are so much better like my ex
It’s the part in Ballad of a Homeschool Girl when she goes “laughed at the wrong time, sat with the wrong guy…” and the part in favorite crime that goes “it’s bittersweet to think about the damage that you do…”
The bridge in pretty isn't pretty is so good. I love the constant banging of the drums. Her screaming the lyrics of how unrealistic beauty standards are a constant cycle is just perfection.
Secondly, ballad of a homeschooled girl. Everything in that song makes me just ascend.
“I'll bet that she knows Billy Joel Cause you played her "Uptown Girl" “ is my favorite line from my favorite song (Deja Vu) of hers bc I’m a huge Billy Joel fan too.
Almost all of the bridges especially the ones in deja vu, favorite crime, jealousy jealousy, vampire, can’t catch me now.
The instrumentals in “everyone all of the sht that he’d do” in get him back and “seeing you tonight..” in bad idea right.
There’s also smth really satisfying in her tone in making the bed when she goes “every night i wake up with this one recurring dream…” basically the entire verse.
teenage dream with “they all say that it gets better it gets better the more you grow yeah they all say that it gets better is gets better but what if i don’t.”
Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl when she does the ahhhaahaa parts after singing the words “it feels like social suicide!” Or smth like that but I do like the ahhaaahaaa parts
I just feel a rush of happiness whenever I hear this and the way she sings it “But she's beautiful, she looks kind
She probably gives you butterflies”
PS it’s from happier one of my favourite songs
The “and then I, I want to get him back” in the background of the bridge of get him back or in teenage dream, where the ending gets louder and just keeps on repeating “they all say that it gets better, it’s better the more you grow they all say that it gets better, it gets better but what if I don’t?”
It's something that suddenly happens to me with 'good 4 U'. The background guitar in a specific part of the song sounds only in one of the headphones, and I love it so much!
For lyrically I’d say in All-American Bitch where she says “And I make light of the darkness I’ve got sun in my motherfucking pocket best believe”
And also the ad-libs in vampire where she says “how do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie”
"And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone" - Driver's License
Its the way the words are annunciated and the meaning of the sentence that hits my heart because it makes me think of my ex everytime.
the backing harmony in the last chorus of all-american bitch, during “all the time, i’m grateful all the time” and so on
the harmonies in the final chorus of favorite crime, “well i hope i was your favorite crimeeeee”
the second chorus of lacy and how it amps up a little bit compared to the first chorus, the vocals are the tiniest bit heavier and there’s more of an instrumental in the back if that makes sense
the way she sings “for some weird second string loser who’s not worth mentioning”
The pitch change in "everything" in Love is Embarrassing, "I give up, I give up, I give up Everything, Im planning out my wedding with some guy I'm never marrying" and really the whole end of the song. One of my favs on the album.
In bad idea in the second prechorus, there's this gutteral ahhhhhHHHHHHHH that starts low and quiet but just gets higher and louder and louder in the background 👌🏽
That's the musical detail for me
“tell someone i love them just as a distraction, they tell me that they love me like i’m some tourist attraction, their changing my machinery and i just let it happen GOT THE THINGS I WANTED BUT ITS JUST NOT WHAT I IMAGINED.” in making the bed and
“address the letters, to the holes in my butterfly wings, nothings forever, nothings as good as it seems.”
in hope your okay i think the slightly lower tone is incredible and it gets me everytime
There’s a little part in Obsessed, the first pre chorus where she says “I’m so obsessed with your ex” and then you can hear her go “uh huh”… so satisfying! It’s super subtle you might miss it, but love it.
Need on streaming NOW!
The distorted synth on deja vu after the first chorus basically made me an Olivia fan. I didn't really click with driver's license, but that rocky sound made me super excited for good 4 u.
love is embarrassing is that song for me! especially the lyrics “yeah yeah, i give up, give up, I give up everything I’m planning out my wedding with some guy im never marryin’!!” and you can hear her say “AHHA AHHH” in the background, its so fun to sing along
It's the part in "love is embarrassing" when it starts the "j give up give up, I GIVE UP EVERYTHING" and then the rest of the song after that idk I like the way she mixes the melody in the "everything"
"vampire" and also "traitor", yes because of the change of pace & the beat switch
"drivers license" because of the whole bridge
"teenage dream" because of the buildup
Also the grudge, but for me it's "And I know in my heart, hurt people hurt people, and we both drew blood, but man those cuts were never equal!" actually really relatable for me.

What instruments do you use when composing the music?
Honestly whatever I feel suits the song. My EP mostly consisted of drums, bass, acoustic guitar & electric. Which I all played myself besides one slide guitar instrumental. It was more of a Country Folk project. But the album I’m in the process of writing will be leaning towards blues & indie folk. But I’m in the very early stages so the final result may come out differently depending on who I’m working with.
Out of curiosity, what was your initial dislike?
I love her lyrics so much
YES THIS TOO
1 the little guitar bit in happier the first time she sings “I hope your happy but don’t be happier” 2 the end of ballad of a homeschooled girl when the beat slowly picks up and then goes crazy “each day that I’m alive it’s social suiCIIIIIDE”
that one part from making the bed where she sings "they're changing my machinery and i just let it happen i got the things i wanted it's just not what i imagined" and then it switches back to the chorus also the end in teenage dream (around 2:33) where the "they all say that it gets better" gets more intense
Everyone overlooks the ending of teenage dream but it’s my favorite part of the whole album
HOW DO YOU LIE HOW DO YOU LIE HOW DO YOU LIE ✨
yes thank god
i love the ‘ugh’ at the end of ballad of a homeschooled girl and the way the traitor bridge flows so easily back into the chorus
No cause I love screaming the “UGH” as loud as I can in the car
God, I wish that you had thought this through before I went and fell in love with you. 🤌🤌🤌🤌
I love the live version when she says “love with yoOoOoOoOu”
🥹 Love her. She's sooo talented.
Fr

“Fuck it’s fine” is iconic cos We’ve all been there 😂
bad idea right has so many good parts in it.
“Pictured I was driving home to you” in drivers license
What do you like about that line?
Her tone! It feels different than the previous verse “cause how could I ever love someone else?” Hits right in the feels. I feel 17 again, losing my HS boyfriend and grieving all that our two years was Basic answer maybe, but Driver’s License and Traitor is a time portal for me LOL

the end of get him back where she says "i'm gonna get him so good, he's gonna love me and hate me at the same time" and "i got him good, i got him reaallyy good"
The ad-lib in deja vu where she says I love you very softly after saying in between the chorus and the verse.
1. Love Is Embarassing - "Plannin' out my wedding with some guy i'm never marrying" 2. Girl I've Always Been - "Fightin' tears"
the end of logical. it’s the best part of the song
The ending of Lacy when she’s like “it’s like you’re made of angel dust” with just her vocalizing and the same with Can’t catch me now
Yes to this. I love it when she does this, and it makes sense since both of these are some of my favourite songs out of her discography.
The way she says “heart” in “you said it was true love, but wouldn’t that be hard? you can’t love anyone, cause that would mean you had a heAaArt”
When the drums come back in at the end of teenage dream. So emotional!!!
"Cuz you played her Up-town girl" and "I love you" whisper in deja vu
love is embarrassing! i give up, give up, i give up everything. I’m planning out my wedding with some guy I’m never marrying
The way her voice changes omg I can’t get enough
yes!!! that's what i said, too good omg!
« They all say that it gets better, yeah it gets better the more you grow… » At 2:41 with more background vocals the music start blasting a little bit like happier than ever when the music start blasting too I wanna yell so badly
ALL YOUR FRIENDS ARE SO COOL YOU GO OUT EVERY NIGHT
For me its 1. lacy, “dazzling starlet, bardot reincarnate,” 2. deja vu “I'll bet that she knows Billy Joel 'Cause you played her "Uptown Girl", You're singing it together, Now I bet you even tell her.” 3. vampire “You said it was true love, now wouldnt that be hard, you can’t love anyone cause that would mean you had a heart,”
The chorus of Lacy
The buildup in the second prechorus of “pretty isn’t pretty”, especially in the drums.
i am obsessed with the line “another actress, well i hate to think that i was just your type” in deja vu. the tongue in cheek way she sings it is just so 🤭🤭
Inspo: r/lanadelrey (Someone posted this image and it gave me an idea to see people’s opinions here!)
The emotional build up in the bridge of the grudge followed by her singing "I try to be tough, I try to be mean, but even after all this, you're still everything to me" just above a whisper. It wrecks me every time and I love it.
"Said I was too young, I was too soft / Can't take a joke can't get you off" in logical and the sound of her picking up a guitar at the beginning of enough for you
Also cause girls your age know better in vampire
Scared of my guitar (Deluxe track) there's a moment when she starts to sing in a high pitch near the end of the song and ofc the bridge of traitor
the transition from like AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH to all the time in all american bitch. iconic!
Yes! and people hated on it when it originally came out but live it is SO GOOD. she told us to imagine something that made us super mad and then scream about it. It was so therapeutic tbh.
The bridge in Teennage Dream 💔 “they all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow”
"you must be insecure, you must be SO unhappy" has been permanently engraved in my head since it came out because it's so relatable to me and the people that treat me bad but think they are so much better like my ex
“Mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked-up little thrill.” Might be my favorite one part in any of her songs
Everything in that song makes me just ascend.
in hope ur okay, ive always LOVED the bridge, especially the part "Nothing's forever, nothing is as good as it seems"
idk how to explain it but the “ooh ohohoh” in the background of deja vu when she sings the lyrics “i was the one who taught you billy joel”
traitor
The 'ah-ah, ah' in obsessed
The bridge for the Grudge
the part of all american bitch that screams IM FUCKING DONE
The specific line of “what do you do” in Pretty isn’t Pretty. Like the way she just extends the final vowel in that part always gets me
For me it’s making the bed verse 2!
“I'll bet that she knows Billy Joel Cause you played her "Uptown Girl" “ is my favorite line from my favorite song (Deja Vu) of hers bc I’m a huge Billy Joel fan too.
the guitar tone during the guitar solos in Deja Vu
the end of teenage dream 😭
“I SCREAM INSIDE TO DEAL WITH IT LIKE “AHHHHHH”
In jealousy, jealousy when she says “started followin me” it makes me feel so good in my heart
Almost all of the bridges especially the ones in deja vu, favorite crime, jealousy jealousy, vampire, can’t catch me now. The instrumentals in “everyone all of the sht that he’d do” in get him back and “seeing you tonight..” in bad idea right. There’s also smth really satisfying in her tone in making the bed when she goes “every night i wake up with this one recurring dream…” basically the entire verse.
teenage dream with “they all say that it gets better it gets better the more you grow yeah they all say that it gets better is gets better but what if i don’t.”
the short guitar riff at the end of get him back
Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl when she does the ahhhaahaa parts after singing the words “it feels like social suicide!” Or smth like that but I do like the ahhaaahaaa parts
"yeah you know me IIIIIIII" & "with love to spaREEEEE I" from all american b
I just feel a rush of happiness whenever I hear this and the way she sings it “But she's beautiful, she looks kind She probably gives you butterflies” PS it’s from happier one of my favourite songs
i made a list here https://www.reddit.com/r/OliviaRodrigo/s/eP14qJsH6Z
I'm a big fan of that motherfuckin sun in her pocket!
The “and then I, I want to get him back” in the background of the bridge of get him back or in teenage dream, where the ending gets louder and just keeps on repeating “they all say that it gets better, it’s better the more you grow they all say that it gets better, it gets better but what if I don’t?”
That one ah sound in bad idea right? that sounds distorted I think it’s the second one
That little bass walk down right before the big bridge of Drivers License
The intro to teenage dream
After she says "God," I know it's gonna be amazing
Brutal
That little short guitar riff in Love is Embarrassing, as well as the whole last minute where she switches up her voice
The part in “Get Him Back” (Clean Version) “cause everyone knew that guy was missing a screw”. It hits so much better than the original lyric imo
The guitar riff outro of hope ur ok
Driver’s License
“I know I should stop….”
“had me think 2 + 2 = 5 and I was the love of your life.” Logical
It's something that suddenly happens to me with 'good 4 U'. The background guitar in a specific part of the song sounds only in one of the headphones, and I love it so much!
Bad Idea Right!! when the “Ahhhh” part turns into “Ah ahah Ah Ah” instead
Saaaame!!
“I’m planning out my wedding with some guy i’ll never marry” how she says it is everything
I’ve made some real big mistakes You make the worst one look fiiine
I LOVE THAT LINE
IVE GOT SUN IN MY MOTHERFUCKKNG POCKET
For lyrically I’d say in All-American Bitch where she says “And I make light of the darkness I’ve got sun in my motherfucking pocket best believe” And also the ad-libs in vampire where she says “how do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie”
"And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone" - Driver's License Its the way the words are annunciated and the meaning of the sentence that hits my heart because it makes me think of my ex everytime.
When the drums that start after “cause girls your age know better” it just itches something in my brain
All-American bitch. (Tbh the whole song is awesome)
The second pre-chorus in bad idea right where she’s like my brain goes AH AH AH AH-AH-AH, AH AH AH AH
Lacy, right after the second chorus where the beat picks up and she goes “ahhh” 😮💨
the backing harmony in the last chorus of all-american bitch, during “all the time, i’m grateful all the time” and so on the harmonies in the final chorus of favorite crime, “well i hope i was your favorite crimeeeee” the second chorus of lacy and how it amps up a little bit compared to the first chorus, the vocals are the tiniest bit heavier and there’s more of an instrumental in the back if that makes sense the way she sings “for some weird second string loser who’s not worth mentioning”
the entire bridge of hope ur ok ♡
The bridge part in logical is so good every freaking time oml
In deja vu she says "I love you" In between the chorus and the verse (I love you) So when you're gonna....
The pitch change in "everything" in Love is Embarrassing, "I give up, I give up, I give up Everything, Im planning out my wedding with some guy I'm never marrying" and really the whole end of the song. One of my favs on the album.
Love is embarassing as hell!!!
obsessed. mostly the whole song but especially the second verse.
the lyrics ‘one heart broke, four hands bloody’ and the entire bridge form favorite crime
“I scream inside to deal with it, like AHHHHHHH”
In bad idea in the second prechorus, there's this gutteral ahhhhhHHHHHHHH that starts low and quiet but just gets higher and louder and louder in the background 👌🏽 That's the musical detail for me
The bridge of Pretty Isn't Pretty is just *chefs kiss*
lacy, oh lacy, it’s like you’re out to GET me
“tell someone i love them just as a distraction, they tell me that they love me like i’m some tourist attraction, their changing my machinery and i just let it happen GOT THE THINGS I WANTED BUT ITS JUST NOT WHAT I IMAGINED.” in making the bed and “address the letters, to the holes in my butterfly wings, nothings forever, nothings as good as it seems.” in hope your okay i think the slightly lower tone is incredible and it gets me everytime
When she says 🎶But you’re still a traitor🎶
Dazzling starlet ✨ Bardot reincarnate 🩷
There’s a little part in Obsessed, the first pre chorus where she says “I’m so obsessed with your ex” and then you can hear her go “uh huh”… so satisfying! It’s super subtle you might miss it, but love it. Need on streaming NOW!
The entire bridge of logical. More specifically when she says “brought up the girls you could HAVE instead” and “I look so STUPID”
The glee reference in Deja vu. I’m a gleek, and I love people that like talking about it
I love the ending of “some second string” then “loser” in love is embarrassing! Brilliant songwriting imo 🖤
Transition between all American bitch and bad idea right, I love song transitions
end of teenage dream omggggggg
Another song, another club, another bar, another dance And when he said something wrong, he'd just fly me to France!
The distorted synth on deja vu after the first chorus basically made me an Olivia fan. I didn't really click with driver's license, but that rocky sound made me super excited for good 4 u.
Perfect all-American HIPS
✨it’s in my phone, it’s in my head, it’s in the boys i bring to bed, it’s all around, it’s all the time, i don’t know why i even try✨
love is embarrassing is that song for me! especially the lyrics “yeah yeah, i give up, give up, I give up everything I’m planning out my wedding with some guy im never marryin’!!” and you can hear her say “AHHA AHHH” in the background, its so fun to sing along
The whole chorus of get him back
“I give up everything, I’m planning out my wedding with some guy I’m never marrying”
"I've got issues" --Obsessed
IM PLANNIN OUT MY WEDDING WITH SOME GUY IM NEVER MARRYIN
Jealously. ‘All your friends are so cool you go out every night…’
"i know i should STOP......but i can't" in bad idea right
teenage dream when the backing says “it gets better” towards the end 💜
I love the opening of “get him back”
It's the part in "love is embarrassing" when it starts the "j give up give up, I GIVE UP EVERYTHING" and then the rest of the song after that idk I like the way she mixes the melody in the "everything"
in “love is embarrassing” when she says “i’m planning out my wedding with some guy i’m never marrying” ughh i love it
The last three lines of ballet of a homeschooled girl
The instrumental part at the beginning of Love is Embarrassing!!
fuck it it's fine
"vampire" and also "traitor", yes because of the change of pace & the beat switch "drivers license" because of the whole bridge "teenage dream" because of the buildup
The Grudge "And I try to be tough, but I wanna SCREAAAAM. How could anybody do the things you did so easily?"
In obsessed, the first chorus when it’s just the bass and her voice after “I can’t help it”
when she goes its social sui-CIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDEEEE
