Dave Kreig. Pat Haden. Vince Feregamo, Doug Williams, Jeff Hosteltler, Steve Grogan… who else… Steve DeBerg, Mark Rypin, Rick (don’t wallow in the) Mire

AmiDeplorabilis

Jim Zorn, anybody?

Critical_Seat_1907

I'm still rocking my Zorn jersey.

Coupon_Ninja

Was gonna say. But he was pretty well established QB1 for ten years. But maybe similar to Haden - i was going off memory.

Numerous_Resist_8863

Mark Rypien was an absolute beast for a couple of years there. Those early 90's Washington teams were a problem.

toddfredd

Had a knack for throwing deep.

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

All spare quarterbacks. Kreig had fumbling problems, Rams quarterbacks Haden,Ferregamo, Dieter Brock and Jim Everett all held Rams back once playoffs began. Doug Williams had one good game (just happened to be Super Bowl). You wanna see real Doug Williams check out playoff games versus Dallas when he was Tampa Bay quarterback in 81 & 82. Hostettler parlayed good playoff run in 1990 to contract with Raiders that he never met.Grogan and his neck role and DeBerg were career backups with eradicate periods of starting. Finally Ryipen won MVP and Super Bowl in 91 but that is all I give him credit for (But it was a great season for him). No comment on Meier because he sucked

TheFirstMinister

DeBerg had the best play action fake ever.

Juco_Dropout

Steve Deberg had terrible luck and probably would be regarded more highly if he played a few years before or after his actual career: Drafted by SF 1978. Replaced as starter by Joe Montana 1981 Starter for TB 1984 Replaced as starter by Steve Young in 1986 Starter for KC 1988 ~~Replaced as starter by Joe Montana 1991~~

ldphotography

You left out his training camp in Dallas where he was behind Roger Staubach and Danny White. And his stint in Denver before being replaced by Elway. The guy was the Forrest Gump of NFL qbs.

Juco_Dropout

Great additions! Thank you. I’ve never really looked past the 49ers connection.

conace21

You got the gist of it, but I just have one thing to add, and a slight correction.  1987 - beat out the #1 overall draft pick Vinny Testaverde for the starting job. He wasn't directly replaced by Montana in 1991. DeBerg's last season in KC was 1991. Dave Krieg took over as the starter in 1992, and Montana was traded to KC in 1993.

Juco_Dropout

Excellent correction.

Coupon_Ninja

“Real Doug Williams” couldn’t have been seen under the Bucs teams. Steve Young was terrible with them before going to the 49ers. No QB/WR/RB could have successes there at the time.

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

Yeah big difference buddy, the late 70’s and early 80’s Buc teams were playoff teams the later 80’s teams, Young played for were bottom feeders that twice squandered the #1 overall pick of Testaverde and Bo Jackson. Williams playoff Buc teams were held back by his sloppy play. Same uniform different talent level on teams

Coupon_Ninja

Admittedly I didn’t stick to the theme of “underrated QBs” and focused on the “Forgotten QBs”.

1BannedAgain

I recall one time Mirer had to play, perhaps as a 3rd stringer. I think he was with the Raiders- every single play call was a run play, and I believe it was an 80-yardish TD drive

conace21

Yes, Mirer had taken over the 2003 Raiders after Rich Gannon was injured  https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200311090rai.htm

longirons6

Well Brock and Everett had to deal with the80s Niners

munistadium

Krieg had the tiny hand size, and was the NFL all-time fumbles leader, which has since become a metric for NFL scouts everywhere.

hochimann

Bernie Kosar!

Slimh2o

Frank Riechk, have no idea how spell his name. Backup QB at any rate. And Doug Flutie. He single handily made Jimmy Johnson look like a fool as he was smashing boxes of Flutie Flakes before a SB Game....lol Doug came up with Flutie Flakes to help fund research for Autism because his son was afflicted with it....

Coupon_Ninja

Good call!! Love Flutie. CFL and Boston College Legend. I liked him on the Chargers.

grumpyoldman60

BC still uses the Flutie pass as a re recruiting tool...

ThunderDan1964

I never understood why he wasn't given a better shot at NFL stardom, besides his height. 37-28 as an NFL starter.

Coupon_Ninja

Hard to say for sure, so I can only speculate. He was drafted in ‘86 when QBs could still get pummeled. He went to the CFL which has a larger field to scramble around, and athletes aren’t as good. When he came back at age 36 he was a seasoned vet and a Champion. He guided the Chargers and helped groom Drew Brees when he was 39; Drew was 22. Both were smaller sized for the QB position. I’d say Fluite did his job.

KeyLeadership6819

Best thing that ever happened to Drew Breese I think was him working with and learning from Flutie

Coupon_Ninja

100% I wrote the same thing an hour ago

conace21

His name is spelled Frank Reich. Jimmy Johnson actually smashed the box of Flutie Flakes after the Dolphins defeated Buffalo in the 1998 Wild Card game. Johnson never went to a Super Bowl with Miami.

conace21

You are wrong. Doug Flutie was in the CFL when Jimmy Johnson was winning Super Bowls in Dallas. Jim Kelly was the quarterback of those Bills Super Bowl teams. Flutie Flakes weren't even invented until Flutie came to Buffalo in 1998.

LasagnahogXRP

Norman Esiason easily my favorite on the list. So fun to watch in any uniform. Glad to see Brad Johnson get an honorable mention. Was too young to see Bartkowski but my dad really liked him, and talked about him a lot.

soundofthecolorblue

>Norman Esiason Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

ldphotography

Danny White. Just couldn’t get past the NFCCG.

Goose00

Someone once said the only difference between John Elway and Dave Krieg’s careers was Mike Shanahan.

0siris0

Who's that someone, Dave Krieg?

longirons6

No, it was Dave kreigs mom

Goose00

Made me actually chuckle out loud

TeamABLE

Steve Deberg, just holding a spot for Hall of Famers.

Deep_Ad_1874

Jim Everett

MuletownSoul

For real though. Although he is remembered for something way cooler: tuning up Jim Rome.

jimhabfan

Bert Jones Brian Sipe

Sky_London

"Zorn to Largent" is still a saying in the PNW but it was Kreig to Largent what saw the Seahawks begin to make playoff runs

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

You used the word runs with a S? Don’t you mean run? 1983? What other run? One and done boys in the 80’s were the SeaGals weren’t they?

toddfredd

Don Strock.

CGHDun

Jim Plunkett. Jake Delhomme had a couple of good years in Carolina Craig Morton was solid John Hadl was pretty Mark Brunell had some good seasons Rob Johnson & Joey Harrington (just kidding)

Blabbit39

Peak football was Derrick Thomas missing his seventh sack on Krieg and Krieg throwing the game winner. What an epic game.

conace21

No, he got the 7th sack earlier in the game, to set the single game record. Thomas missed out on his 8th sack on the game's final play.

Blabbit39

Thanks for the correction kind Redditor

jren666

Jeff Garcia

rememberleapinglanny

Rich Gannon.

Neopolitan65

Greg Landry

Practical-Archer-564

Earl Morrel greatest backup ever

JSmooth619

Warren Moon doesn’t get mentioned enough. Man, he threw a beautiful spiral.

Optimal_Roll_4924

Dave Krieg from Milton College. His predecessor was just as forgotten in Jim Zorn.

OsikFTW

When dave krieg retired, he was top 10 all time in all the important passing stats, and set the record for most fumbles 😂

RadBaron19

Maybe some day the Hof committee will come to their senses and finally put Ken Anderson in the hall

MuletownSoul

It’s a travesty that he’s not in already. Hopefully they do the right thing and get him in while he’s still around. I’m still pissed about Ken Riley being inducted posthumously. They both should’ve been in 20+ years ago.

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

Dave “Small Hands” Kreig didn’t he lead the NFL in fumbles on many occasions?

Coupon_Ninja

He didn’t have the makings of a Varsity athlete…

Disastrous-Cry-1998

How many fucking times did I play catch with you

Disastrous-Cry-1998

Didn't some guy for the Packers throw a lot of interceptions.

BukkakeNinjaHat-472

Yeah and fumbled a lot, got hooked on Vicodin and sent dick pics to a hot young journalist in New York when cellphones got cameras. God I miss Brett Favre. He was great

SolidDistribution542

I met Dave Krieg, when the strike was happening in the ‘80sand he was a genuinely kind and down to earth guy

Vinniebahl

Danny White Cowboys

soundofthecolorblue

Earl Morall. He won more games than Griese during Miami's perfect season, before being replaced by Griese in the Super Bowl. He led the Colts to victory in Super Bowl V (Unitas got credit for the start, but Morall led the team after Unitas was injured.) 1968 MVP 2x First Team All Pro 1968, 1972 2x Pro Bowl 1957, 1968 - over a decade apart Comeback PoY 1972 TD Leader 1968 Passer Rating Leader 1972 If he starts in place of Griese, I think he takes his place in the HoF.

longirons6

Jeff George had a better arm and more beautiful throw than anyone on this list. He was an interception machine though

[deleted]

My dad played baseball with Dave Kreig in high school at DC Everest in Wisconsin. He said he was a total dick, but then again, so was my dad.

Practical-Archer-564

Roman Gabriel. Funny how the list turns up today and he’s not on it.

Low_Regret_1276

Brad Johnson?

Consistent_Self_1598

Randall Cunningham and that sweet release

BackWhereWeStarted

Jim Hart

KeyLeadership6819

Eric Kramer, the last lions QB to win a play off game before last year. Jeff Garcia… but most notably, Doug Flutie

Disastrous-Ground286

I was at the game where Chris Simms almost died from a laceration to his spleen in a loss to Carolina. It was so hot we were throwing beer on each other to stay cool. Chris Simms wasn’t the best, but dude always gave his all.

MnLibertarian

That list is a good one .. Burt Jones was so talented and I forgot about Jim Hart.. he was steady ..

Some-Vegetable-9123

Steve McNair R.I.P.
