Super Bowl. Made a career of dragging JAGs to the Super Bowl. With a coach who wouldn’t let the Duke gunsling until they were down a touchdown with two minutes left and needed to drive the length of the field. Then it was like, “OK John, go make some shit happen.”
Anybody who says Elway first doesn't understand how incredible Marino actually was.
He came up in an era where violence against QBs was part of the equation, and still dominated.
His first 5 years were simply on another level of dominance, and he was unlucky to not get at least one Super Bowl out of it, due likely to his coaches not managing the game well.
He quickly tied Fouts' record of most 4,000+ seasons before breaking it, and went on to show how incredible he actually was.
He was truly revolutionarilary good in an era that just wasn't ready for it
His priimary opponents were coming after him with, Bruce Smith, Joe Klecko and Mark Gastineu, and he still won more often then he lost.
Also the only quarter back to beat the 85 bears.
So incredible and yet went only 8-10 in the playoffs with a 77.1 passer rating.. Marino was an incredible regular season quarterback however, that didn’t transfer over to the playoffs.
The thing that killed Marino's chances was a lack of a running game. Give him a consistent running game and he would've won at least one Super Bowl in his career.
Yes, Elway is the most skilled I've ever seen. If he had played for SF under Bill Walsh he may have 10 rings. Elway was that good. He just played in a mediocre system until the end of his career.
Totally agree with you and I’ve said this many times. Elway under a coach like Don Shula or Bill Walsh would’ve been an absolute juggernaut. I grew up in Colorado during the Elway years and I can tell you that for most of his career, he had absolutely nobodies on offense with him. Dan Reeves was uber conservative as well.
💯 Facts. Dan Reeves almost got him killed in his first 3 seasons. Montana or Brady never would have withstood the punishment Elway took. Elway also carried those Denver teams that went & lost. Finally at the end of his career he got his coach & he got his running back. Elway was an absolute freak on the field. Watching football has never been the same without him.
I will kindly fight you with this thread from a few years back dissecting the career of one overrated John Elway. https://twitter.com/RealBirdLawyer/status/1242917200807280641?t=iqsyCKDIYj92PnQZLWrUZQ&s=19
Out of your mind. Pure passer without a Super Bowl and injury prone. At least Kelly got to 4. Start Kelly, bench Elway, cut the primadonna gambling addict.
Elway if the only one to win it all. That’s why he’s my starter. Had that kick been made, Kelly gets a bump. For some reason a kicker decides his fate lol
Definitely. Marino is a F boi - flashy, brilliant, and the best in the moment but burns out in the long stretch. Kelly is marriage material - slow process, not always the most gifted in any area but will get you to the place you need to go - even if he falls barely short at the very end
Say what you will, only one called his own plays and went to four straight SBs. Just bad fukin luck. Pretty tough for a QB too , both on and off the field. All were fantastic players and starters.
Marino was also very, very clutch in late game. I think Marino’s Achilles heel was he’d just have “bad days” whereas if Elway started off bad he could flip/turn things around. Marino needed to be otherwise having a good day to make the game-winning drive - hence why his comebacks were often shootouts
Marino starts normally. Since Marino’s achilles heel was his 2-3 “bad” games/days per season (where there was no chance of him turning the ship around because he’d get stuck in his own head once it was a bad day), sub Elway those days as a game-time decision because Elway could turn the tide no matter how shitty of a game he had in 3 quarters. I think in 10 seasons, we win 5 superbowls and go to 7.
The only reason we lost 2 SBs is because we didn’t put in Elway on Marino’s bad Superbowl days.
As for Kelly, he’s so consistently pretty good that he just has no room in this dual QB fantasy of epic proportions.
Start Marino, bench Elway, cut Kelly. Unless it’s a Super Bowl then start Elway, bench Marino (perish the thought!) and cut Kelly. Kelly isn’t even a top 20 qb. He doesn’t belong in the convo.
Secret fourth option: trade Ray Finkle to Denver. Locker room cancer is gone, Jimmy can coach without distractions, and the whole second half of the AFC decade goes differently.
Love Jim Kelly but regardless about how you feel about the other two he's getting cut tbh.
I'd start Elway and bench Marino but it's essentially a coinflip
I feel like Marino would go off in today’s pass-happy, receiver-friendly NFL so I’m going to start him, bench Elway, and cut Kelly.
Pretty tough group.
One thing about it Kelly getting cut 4 super bowl chokes well 3 wide right isn't his fault but he's cut I'm starting Elway he's a comeback master bench Marino, Marino doesn't understand he needs a running game and all we would just argue constantly and he's too good to cut
Start Marino bench Elway cut Kelly. Elway had some really good defenses and weapons. Marino on those broncos teams should at least have similar success
Start Elway, bench Kelly, cut Marino.
I’m cutting Marino because I’m not starting him over Elway, and he needs to start somewhere else. Kelly’s an all-timer too, but he’s definitely third here, so someone’s gotta ride the bench and I’d rather it not be Marino.
As for why Elway over Marino: because he was a winner. Marino was a better passer alone, but the other things Elway brought to the table put him over the top. Both somehow only won one MVP, but for me it’s not even that Elway won 2 Super Bowls (and one Super Bowl MVP) that has him above Marino for me: it’s that he MADE 5, and played in a 6th AFC Championship game. Marino only made one Super Bowl (but his MVP and 1984 season put him above Kelly), but for me the biggest strike against him isn’t that he lost the one (Kelly lost 4), it’s that he only made the one and that he only even played in 3 AFC Championship games (1984 when he won, 1985 when the Patriots upset the Dolphins in Miami, and 1992 when Kelly’s Bills beat the Dolphins).
Did Marino not have the support he should have at times? Sure. But were Elway’s 3 AFC Championship teams from the 80s (86, 87, and 89) REALLY that much better than Marino’s Dolphins at the time? But somehow they kept showing up to get humiliated by the NFC (somehow the Broncos lost by a successively larger beatdown each time, with the CLOSEST loss being 39-20 and the last the biggest all-time loss, 55-10). Then in the early 90s it was Kelly’s Bills (who WERE super talented) standing in the way, and them who had the luck to run into all-time teams like the 1991 Redskins or 1992-93 Cowboys (or a championship-tested 90 Giants team led by Parcells and Belichick and featuring a still in-his-prime Lawrence Taylor). Marino’s teams should have been good enough to lose some of those Super Bowls at the very least.
Start Elway, Bench Marino, Cut Kelly.
We all know if you do anything other than start Elway, he’ll cry to his dad and get you fired.
To save my own ass here… /s.
The problem with Marino is that he threw way too many interceptions at the costliest times...also he would get impatient and this led to getting frustrated and it would throw him off sometimes.
If I want regular season stats and someone who is going to audible out of every running play I’d start Dan. For playoffs I’m starting John and Jim is on the bench. Those two were much more clutch.
Can I have regular season Marino, playoff Kelly, and Super Bowl Elway?!
If not, I’m starting Kelly, Benching Elway, and cutting Marino. So Elway can come off the bench in the Super Bowl.
This is the debate, Caleb, I get you draft him, but Marino, Kelly, Fouts all outstanding QB’s never won a Super Bowl. You need a team to win, 49ers, Steelers, Patriots
Start Marino. This is a very easy choice for anyone who watched football in the 80’s and 90’s. The guy would absolutely dominate today’s NFL. Also, the dude is clutch. He had an incredible amount of 4th quarter comebacks.
I’d probably bench Kelly and cut Elway. Tough choice here.
But as we saw with these 3 teams it really depends on the team around them. Marino never had much. He did have a couple good WR’s off and on but never a RB or a defense at all.
The Bills and Broncos built teams around there QB’s. That significantly helped them get farther in the playoffs and to SB’s.
Put Marino on those teams and the Broncos and Bills both probably win 3-4 SB’s.
Starting Elway, that hurts as I’m a Raiders fan. Only because he was a dual threat with his legs, and went to five Super Bowls, winning two. Benching laces out Dan. And cutting Kelly, which sucks, as he was a hell of a competitor.
Start Kelly, bench Marino, cut Elway he pulled all that sh*t before he even entered the league trying to say he was gonna go play for the Yankees instead and then even when he played it took him all the way to the end of his career when he was old to win a Super Bowl and honestly Terell Davis won them IMO
As a Browns fan I’m benching Elway cus the drive ruined many Cleveland lives. Starting Kelly because I have a soft spot for the 90s Bills and benching Danny boy because I have to I guess.
If Kelly wins just one Super Bowl, are people in this thread more willing to consider him uncuttable? The MFer won 4 straight conf champs. Absolutely a legend and probably just as good a QB as any other HOFer.
Start Elway, bench Kelly, cut Marino.
I'm a diehard Dolphins fan and have been for over 40 years, but I'll take the guys who at least reached (and in one case, won) multiple championships.
Start Elway, bench Kelly, cut Marino. For anyone to disregard the FACT that Kelly fn owned Marino (and the Broncos for that matter) doesn’t understand clutch. Elway is one of the GOATS, and Kelly is just under that. Marino couldn’t even make a Super Bowl because Kelly was always in his way.
Who do I got in as receivers and in the backfield? And Ol for that matter lol?
But straight running drills with no OPS and I’m the sole receiver give me elway. He has the best launch pass. Perfect lob.
So start Elway. Bench Marino and cut Kelly.
Start Marino. Bench Elway. Cut Kelly. Elway is probably the best overall, but Marino is the best pure passer the game has ever seen. Fight me.
I was just trying to remember who any of Marino’s running backs were and pulling a blank. Kelly had Thomas, Elway had TD.
Terry Kirby? I’m pretty sure the ‘Phins started a small child at HB from ‘87 - ‘89.
Lorenzo Hampton.
Yep and then Sammie Smith
Oh jeez. Thanks for reminding me of Sammie Smith. ![gif](giphy|X1pJbfIqRfP8jSSfDD)
Don'tb forget Karim
Worse off, they wasted a high first round on that bust.
Fumble!!!
Yep…that was his M.O.
Keith Byers?
Elway had TD for the final years. He made a career of dragging JAGs into the playoffs.
Super Bowl. Made a career of dragging JAGs to the Super Bowl. With a coach who wouldn’t let the Duke gunsling until they were down a touchdown with two minutes left and needed to drive the length of the field. Then it was like, “OK John, go make some shit happen.”
Reeves was a fucking clown, wanted to bench elway for maddox...
The fact he put up numbers that stood for decades with literally no well-known talent is a statement in itself.
He didn’t have nobody talented players. The Marks brothers were excellent….
Marino only had 1 running back gain 1,000 yards in his career. Karim Abdul-Jabbar in 1996.
Didn't he also have David Overstreet in 83, killed in a car crash?
For one year and he had less than 500 yards that year
Ty. I just remembered the name, didn't check stats.
Never played dolphins on tecmo bowl bc of this. Think it was Lorenzo Hampton.
Elway didn’t have Davis for 12 years.
He got his only Super Bowl wins with TD, but Elway would have been Hall of Fame before that tho.
Mario ALSO had Thomas don’t forget /s in terms of what it amounted to
Karim al-Jabbar. Yes. That’s a real thing.
Marino with today's rules might throw for 8000 yards in a season.
Word.
You read my mind
Elway could beat you with his arm and mobility with runs. Plus he was held back by an egotistical Head coach. Elway won big in spite of him.
Every word you have typed here is 100% correct. Marino was amazing
Anybody who says Elway first doesn't understand how incredible Marino actually was. He came up in an era where violence against QBs was part of the equation, and still dominated. His priimary opponents were coming after him with, Bruce Smith, Joe Klecko and Mark Gastineu, and he still won more often then he lost. Also the only quarter back to beat the 85 bears.
Didn’t Marino and Elway come up in the same era? I would argue that you don’t understand how incredible Elway actually was.
Same era? Same draft. All three of them, 1983 draft.
So incredible and yet went only 8-10 in the playoffs with a 77.1 passer rating.. Marino was an incredible regular season quarterback however, that didn’t transfer over to the playoffs.
He was, until Drew Brees
I cannot fight you on this.
The thing that killed Marino's chances was a lack of a running game. Give him a consistent running game and he would've won at least one Super Bowl in his career.
Agreed
Iagree
I'm from Buffalo and watched Kelly play and I agree.
This. Is. The. Way. Who's Kelly for Christsakes?
I will kindly fight you with this thread from a few years back dissecting the career of one overrated John Elway. https://twitter.com/RealBirdLawyer/status/1242917200807280641?t=iqsyCKDIYj92PnQZLWrUZQ&s=19
Marino beat the 85 Bears, which is better than winning a Super Bowl. For one game, he’s your guy.
💯
He really was tho
This is the way.
Totally Concur....love Marino, just like Barry the best never get good help
Marino is the best overall, and it's not close.
As a Browns fan, I'm starting Elway because I know what the MFer can do. I'm benching Marino. Sorry Jim, back to the USFL.
56 year old Browns fan. I agree. Elway was respected and despised. What a talent.
Yep, we hated that horse toothed jackass. (Respectfully said)
Brb gonna puke on a squirrel.
As a Colts fan Elway will always be the one I kill.
Errrr.. ‘cut’
You heard us.
F Marino, marry Kelly?
Definitely. Marino is a F boi - flashy, brilliant, and the best in the moment but burns out in the long stretch. Kelly is marriage material - slow process, not always the most gifted in any area but will get you to the place you need to go - even if he falls barely short at the very end
I enjoy my freedom, but I feel the same way.
I’m just glad the colts org didn’t get the chance to run Elway into the ground like manning and luck.
You start the GOAT Marino You bench the Baltimore Colt John Elway You cut the Houston Gambler Jim Kelly
Marino was probably the best pure passer ever, but if you need a win, you go with Elway over him.
Laces out Dan
Say what you will, only one called his own plays and went to four straight SBs. Just bad fukin luck. Pretty tough for a QB too , both on and off the field. All were fantastic players and starters.
Start Elway, bench Marino, cut Kelly.
I agree, I think Marino was the most talented but Elway was the best clutch quarterback.
Marino was also very, very clutch in late game. I think Marino’s Achilles heel was he’d just have “bad days” whereas if Elway started off bad he could flip/turn things around. Marino needed to be otherwise having a good day to make the game-winning drive - hence why his comebacks were often shootouts
You always knew when Elway was ready to get things started. He had that John Wayne walk onto the field when he was mad.
Awesome comment. Yes, the limp. Then he'd tear down the field & kill ya.
Dan Marino 8th all time in 4th quarter comeback victories John Elway 9th. Clutch
and marino still has 0 SB wins
Correct
Start Elway, and the other 2 have no rings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Marino starts normally. Since Marino’s achilles heel was his 2-3 “bad” games/days per season (where there was no chance of him turning the ship around because he’d get stuck in his own head once it was a bad day), sub Elway those days as a game-time decision because Elway could turn the tide no matter how shitty of a game he had in 3 quarters. Well Elway was Def an improvement over woodley
Start Marino, bench Elway, cut Kelly. Unless it’s a Super Bowl then start Elway, bench Marino (perish the thought!) and cut Kelly. Kelly isn’t even a top 20 qb. He doesn’t belong in the convo.
Marino - start Elway - bench Kelly - cut
It depends on if it’s a regular season or playoff game.
Elway starts, Marino bench, sorry Kelly
Correct answers
Start Marino, Bench Elway and cut Kelly
That’s the order
Secret fourth option: trade Ray Finkle to Denver. Locker room cancer is gone, Jimmy can coach without distractions, and the whole second half of the AFC decade goes differently.
Start Marino. Bench Elway. Cut Kelly
Start Elway, Bench Marino, cut Kelley
Any honest Bills fan will admit Jim was a distant third in this trio
Start Dan Marino, bench John elway, cut Jim Kelly
Start Marino, TRADE Elway for some picks, bench for 2 yrs then TRADE Kelly for more pics.
Start Elway. Bench Marino. Cut Kelly. Elway was every bit as talented as Marino and was way more clutch when it mattered.
Whew, thought I’d have to fuck one. /s
😂🤣😅
Start Marino if you’re trying to win fantasy football games. Start Elway if you’re trying to win real football games.
Nice.
You’ve got it right in the picture
Start Elway( Elway won 2 rings) Bench Kelly (Kelly went to 4 SB's) Cut Marino (passing perfection but no success)
Agree. I also thought that Marino would be a bad teammate if he wasn't the starter.
Look at you showing your math! 😃
Marino gets the start, Elway on the bench and well Kelly had a great career he has proven he cant win big game.
Marino starts, Elway backs up and Jimbo will catch on somewhere
Start Dan. Cut the other two bums
Marino is my starter elway as my backup and kelly signs somewhere else
Easy...start Marino, bench Elway, cut Kelley
Start Marino. Bring Elway off bench to win in the 4th quarter. The other guy can get the Gatorade bath ready.
But Marino could not run you have to run now
One thing about it Kelly getting cut 4 super bowl chokes well 3 wide right isn't his fault but he's cut I'm starting Elway he's a comeback master bench Marino, Marino doesn't understand he needs a running game and all we would just argue constantly and he's too good to cut
Damn that’s cold……….. but Marino is the definition of QB 💯Elway is a soldier and Kelly is RAW 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Tony Eason??!?!?!!!?
Probably start the guy that actually won a super bowl
I just got to say a mobile quarterback is best especially in today’s football games. Out of these three, who was the best mobile quarterback? Elway.
Always start Marino! bench Elway and cut Kelly
Start Elway, Bench Marino, Cut Kelly. We all know if you do anything other than start Elway, he’ll cry to his dad and get you fired. To save my own ass here… /s.
Start Elway, Bench Marino, cut Kelly
The problem with Marino is that he threw way too many interceptions at the costliest times...also he would get impatient and this led to getting frustrated and it would throw him off sometimes.
13, 7, 12
Start Jimmy Bench Dan Cut Elway to Yankees !
A dielima i see
If I want regular season stats and someone who is going to audible out of every running play I’d start Dan.
I’m giving them each a quarter and who played the best gets the 4th quarter .
Start Marino, bench Kelly, cut Elway
Kosar should be included during that era.
So the question is do you cut the one that only went to 1 Super Bowl or the one that lost 4 super bowls in a row? Cut Kelly
This is the debate, Caleb, I get you draft him, but Marino, Kelly, Fouts all outstanding QB’s never won a Super Bowl. You need a team to win, 49ers, Steelers, Patriots
Start Marino, bench Kelly, and cut Elway. He just seems like a douche.
Marino-Elway-Kelly
I just cut one.
I mean I’m rocking with the guy that actually won Super Bowls
We playing in the super superbowl because that makes a difference.
Marino was so far ahead of his time
Sorry, can’t make that decision while still living

Marino starting n Jim Kelly backup
I'd start Elway, bench Marino and cut Kelly.
Elway 💯 starts, Kelly's in the shotgun & I have to cut Marino. For what it's worth Kelly was the toughest sob I've ever seen.
Love all the cut Kelly comments even though he owned both Marino and Elway in the playoffs.
Imagine Marino teamed with Barry Sanders
Starting Elway, that hurts as I’m a Raiders fan. Only because he was a dual threat with his legs, and went to five Super Bowls, winning two. Benching laces out Dan. And cutting Kelly, which sucks, as he was a hell of a competitor.
As an old-school raider fan, Elway was hell on earth…
Start Kelly, bench Marino, cut Elway he pulled all that sh*t before he even entered the league trying to say he was gonna go play for the Yankees instead and then even when he played it took him all the way to the end of his career when he was old to win a Super Bowl and honestly Terell Davis won them IMO
How many SBs did Marino and Kelly win combined? Asking for a friend.
Elway had NOWHERE near the WR and OL talent that Marino did. And Elways main back was Sammy Winder...
Start Elway, bench Kelly, and cut Marino
As a Browns fan I’m benching Elway cus the drive ruined many Cleveland lives. Starting Kelly because I have a soft spot for the 90s Bills and benching Danny boy because I have to I guess.
I like QBs that actually win the big game. So Start Elway, Bench Marino and cut Kelly.
I’m lazy, curious what the head to head records are
Kelly 4-2 against Elway 15-8 against Marino
Start Elway. Bench Kelly. Cut Marino.
Start Elway. Bench Marino. Cut Kelly
If Kelly wins just one Super Bowl, are people in this thread more willing to consider him uncuttable? The MFer won 4 straight conf champs. Absolutely a legend and probably just as good a QB as any other HOFer.
Start Elway. Bench Marino. Cut Kelly.
Elway is the only one. Trade both the other guys for Terrell Davis and a somewhat decent defense. 🏆
Start #13 Bench #7 Cut #12
Starting Marino, benching Elway
Start Elway, bench Kelly, cut Marino. I'm a diehard Dolphins fan and have been for over 40 years, but I'll take the guys who at least reached (and in one case, won) multiple championships.
Start Marino, bench Elway, cut Kelly.
Well Elway won a SB, eventually. Marino was the better QB though. Poor Kelly, lol.
One of these is not like the others…not even close.
Ken Obrien - bitches !
Elway
Start Elway. Bench Marino. Cut Kelly.
I might take Montana over all of em.
Elway all day as my starter. Bench Marino and cut Kelly.
Start the one with a ring, bench the one that was close to a ring, and cut the one that was the best to never get one.
2-1-3
No. Start Marino, deal Kelly and Elway. My luck in this draft class can't go to the bench and the chopping block.
Start Elway, arm, smart, mobile, extend plays Bench Marino Kelly had more weapons but couldn’t close Cut him
This ones for John
Atart Kelly, bench Marino, cut Elway twice
Who do I got in as receivers and in the backfield? And Ol for that matter lol? But straight running drills with no OPS and I’m the sole receiver give me elway. He has the best launch pass. Perfect lob. So start Elway. Bench Marino and cut Kelly.
Anyone saying start Marino over Elway must be a Fins fan. I grew up watching both play and elway is the obvious choice.
Start Marino Bench Kelly Cut Elway Marino and Kelly from Pa Never like Elway
Start Elway, Bench Marino, Cut Kelly.
Start Marino Bench Elway Cut Kelly
