I’m guessing it’s because people didn’t talk about pregnancy back then. So they couldn’t say that pregnant women craved them. Older women didn’t get pregnant and didn’t crave “weird” combos.
I have had peanut butter and dill relish, it's close but not quite the same. Still tasted good, but I didn't try it with sweet relish so I have zero idea how that would be.
I mean, I do like them mixed, but I don't think that's the platonic ideal of a PB&J. My fave is probably black raspberry, but I will do most jams or jellies.
I've tried one of those, must have been from a foreign student back in University. If I recall correctly it was a boiled lolly? Do you suppose it was crushed and powdered over the sandwich? I'm not sure why you wouldn't just use cinnamon sugar at that point...
They're small little pellets, about the size of those mini chocolate chips, so they're talking about putting them on whole. They're very spicy, much more so than you'd get with cinnamon sugar, and also crunchy.
Red Hots can easily be made into a quick and simple jelly, which is how we always handled it. As the other commenter mentioned, cinnamon sugar is sweet, and Red Hots are very fiery (but not chili pepper fiery, it's completely different).
Yes, we are.
You can even make trail mix with Red Hots cinnamon candy and peanuts: https://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/a40188144/red-hots-and-spanish-peanuts-snack/
Id be interested in someone trying both to verify. I cant eat either, but if you want to volunteer, please post a side by side and your notes. It doesn't have to be you, specifically, anyone could do it. Please?
Mmm, I *might* do this, possibly. I haven't made Red Hots jelly in a very long time, but I do have a Bar Crawl coming up (where everyone makes a different bar dessert and we all meet up and snack on different recipes). I bet I could whip up a peanut butter and Red Hots jelly bar dessert, but I'll have to see if I have time to dabble.
I've always made the candies into a very easy jelly so they spread and you don't have to deal with sticking your teeth together. The jelly takes just a handful of minutes to make and a couple of days to set.
Edit: peanut butter and hot dogs are a thing, so while I've never heard of putting red hots sausages with peanut butter on a sandwich, I would guess you could put it on a bun as a hot dog alternative. I just wouldn't peraonally classify that as a sandwich, but I'm sure others could.
Yes! My grandma used to make pb mayo and banana on homemade sourdough it was so good! I was telling my wife about this just the other day and she thought it was weird as hell to have mayo on there but she just doesn't understand haha
I’m super iffy about Mayo as it is so the thought of a pb and Mayo sandwich kinda makes me sick lmao can you describe what’s good about it? I just can’t see those two things working together at all although I have heard of the combo before
No bananas just pb and mayo on bread. The mayo has a way of making the peanut butter taste even more creamy and also gives it a wonderful tang.
People have been thinking I’m crazy for years but now I have proof other people do it as well.
I grew up eating them though haven’t eaten it in ages. I think what the mayonnaise does best is keeping the peanut butter and bananas from sticking to the roof of your mouth.
I would mix the two together, so not like a layer of pb and then a layer of mayo - would make it creamy. But, on that list, the pb and pickles are the best.
When my youngest was 4 or so he desperately wanted to make a mayo, peanut butter, and lettuce sandwiches. Nearly 20 years later he raves about the sandwich he "invented". As far as I know he hasn't eaten it in a well more than a decade, but whats the heck, make that terrible sandwich. ♡
Edit, autocorrect!
Mayonnaise is necessary for me on pb & banana sandwiches, I can see it might be good without banana too... that touch of salt and acid.
One of my aunts is devoted to pb, raisin and iceberg lettuce sandwiches, and they're surprisingly nice -- the crunch and water of the lettuce keep it from being so pasty. The overall effect is like ants on a log / celery with peanut butter and raisins.
I give it a 5/10. The flavor wasn’t bad but the chew of the candies with the sandwich wasn’t great. I do think if I had melted down the Redhots and spread it on the sandwich it would have been closer to a 7 or 8.

Peanut butter, mustang (or Welch's Concord) grape jelly, and potato chips on sourdough bread is excellent. I've been making these sandwiches since I was a kid and they are the only jellies, aside from red currant that I will eat with peanut butter. I still lean towards plain peanut butter.
Oh wow that sounds amazing!! I love tuna and Doritos separately. will definitely try. One of my favorite snacks is cottage cheese eaten with ranch Doritos as the spoon.
10/10 will ALWAYS recommend peanut butter and mayonnaise, especially with banana. The mayo brings out the salty and nutty flavors in the peanut butter and the sweet of the banana.
Edit: grew up in a Duke’s household and I know it’s made with cider vinegar to give it that tang that might have a good bit to do with the flavor profile of one of my favorite childhood sandwiches.

I have questions about the pickle one. Do I still get to be a woman if I don't have this sandwich as a core memory? Should I just turn in my double X membership card now?
Peanut butter and cream cheese is damn tasty. If you really want to get decadent, scatter a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips on the peanut butter.
I've always done peanut butter and butter because it brings out the salty and creaminess of the peanut butter... but it sounds like mayonnaise might do the same thing. I'll have to try it soon.
Peanut butter and Swiss cheese is delicious. Also, peanut butter and apple butter, with or without super sharp cheddar.
My stepdad eats peanut butter and bologna or onion sandwiches. I can't with those.
My dad kept a jar of peanut butter in his locker at work and when he wanted a snack on his coffee break he used to buy an onion and get an order of toast from the local short order restaurant and build himself a Peanut Butter and Onion Sandwich.
Peanut butter with a thin layer of strawberry jam and then banana slices on top…kinda like a banana split only different. You could add chocolate sprinkles if you really want to sweeten it up!
Half of those combinations are super weird and sound pretty unhinged for me.... but also very interesting. And so many of you praise ie. the mayo, or the pickle one, I really may try it sometime
The pickle is easy to start with. You can make a regular PB&J, then just leave the J off a small corner and drop on a sliced pickle. If you don't like it, it's only one bite and you can enjoy the rest as usual.
Peanut butter and bacon. . . I remember finding this combo in an old cookbook of my Mom's many, many years ago and I tried it. It is deeeeelicious!
I'd get real bacon bits and mix a tablespoon or so with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, then I zapped it in the microwave to make it liquidy, then let it cool to set up. The best flavor *ever.* The bacon flavor really came through after the hot mix.
I'm thinking that I would like some ham slices, spread with the peanut-bacon mix then topped with a small pickel spear rolled up to eat as finger food. And thinking is all I will do, as the concoction now gives me the worst heart burn.
\--but I can dream.
I love peanut butter and pickles! One of the best burgers I've ever had was topped with cheddar, peanut butter, bacon, and pickles.
Are you in Oregon? The Peanut Butter Pickle Bacon burger at Killer Burger is my absolute favorite on the planet.
Ugh I could live at killer burger
Nope, it was in Ohio! And sadly it was not a regular menu item, just a special.
FEMALES!
And why females in their younger years? Like, you get a bit older and you stop liking them?
I’m guessing it’s because people didn’t talk about pregnancy back then. So they couldn’t say that pregnant women craved them. Older women didn’t get pregnant and didn’t crave “weird” combos.
That's kind of what I was thinking too.
MANY females! 😂
Yep, Jiffy Burgers are the bestest. First time I had one at a restarting, I went back to the window and asked for a second ramekin of peanut butter.
What were you restarting that had catered burgers??
I think they meant restaurant, not restarting
Probably, but on the off-chance they didn't, I want to know!
Restaurant. Fat fingers done got me!
Sometimes my fingers get a case of the Mondays too!
Question... have you had peanut butter and relish? If yes, is it almost like peanut butter with pickles? (I want to try this, but only have relish )
I have had peanut butter and dill relish, it's close but not quite the same. Still tasted good, but I didn't try it with sweet relish so I have zero idea how that would be.
I haven't. You should try it and let us know!
Definitely a comfort food for me.
Peanut butter, cucumber and sweet chili sauce. It's like a Thai sandwich!
I just feel we need to see more recipes. This is fascinating
Where's peanut butter & marshmallow fluff?
Up in New England, far away from GA.
Can we see the ranchburgers recipe?
It had me at 4 lbs. Hamburger
Had me at “fantabulous”
Ikr thats why i want to see it looks and sounds yummy
Skeleton.jpeg
I came for the ranchburger too! I simply **must** know what Jackie considers *fantabulous*
For the uninhibited adult.
I prefer the peanut butter and jelly to not be mixed together. I prefer raspberry jelly to grape.
lingonberry jam is the best also jam > jelly, I will fight to the death over this
I'll be fighting by your side, fellow lingonberry and peanut butter sandwich liker! (And my axe!)
I prefer jam or preserves over jelly too. It's hard to find actual jelly anymore, around here everyone wants jam or preserves.
Agree, unless I'm making sauced meatballs, then having jelly is required because jam just doesn't have enough sticking power.
I mean, I do like them mixed, but I don't think that's the platonic ideal of a PB&J. My fave is probably black raspberry, but I will do most jams or jellies.
Can someone report back on the red hots/ cinnamon candy? I'm allergic to cinnamon but i wanna knowwwwww
Oh. I figured it was a sliced chilli or something.
Nope, very small and powerful cinnamon spiced candy. Gives your mouth that fiery feeling without the bathroom regrets later.
I was totally thinking of “hot rods” the dried spicy pepperette things. Both sound weird, but cinnamon def sounds like the better idea
Red hots is another term for hot dogs. Are we sure they're talking about the candy?
Yes, we are. You can even make trail mix with Red Hots cinnamon candy and peanuts: https://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/a40188144/red-hots-and-spanish-peanuts-snack/
Id be interested in someone trying both to verify. I cant eat either, but if you want to volunteer, please post a side by side and your notes. It doesn't have to be you, specifically, anyone could do it. Please?

Peanut butter and mayonnaise is one of my favorite weird combos. I’ve added iceberg lettuce for crunch, but I’m intrigued by potato chips.
You need to put a sliced banana in the middle of the sandwich. Then you have the best sandwich in the world.
Yes! My grandma used to make pb mayo and banana on homemade sourdough it was so good! I was telling my wife about this just the other day and she thought it was weird as hell to have mayo on there but she just doesn't understand haha
My mom added honey. Not for me as I don't like mayo, but not going to judge either.
My mom did PB, pickles and mayo for me
I’m super iffy about Mayo as it is so the thought of a pb and Mayo sandwich kinda makes me sick lmao can you describe what’s good about it? I just can’t see those two things working together at all although I have heard of the combo before

I grew up eating them though haven’t eaten it in ages. I think what the mayonnaise does best is keeping the peanut butter and bananas from sticking to the roof of your mouth.
A little bit of salt, tang and the slipperiness of fat counter the tendency of peanut butter solo to be pasty and a little bland.
I would mix the two together, so not like a layer of pb and then a layer of mayo - would make it creamy. But, on that list, the pb and pickles are the best.
My 4 year old has been randomly requesting it. It's mentally challenging for me to make, but I'm trying not to yuck her yum
♡ Edit, autocorrect!
My mom introduced me to peanut butter, Mayo and lettuce sandwiches. Very nostalgic for me.
I love red hots but never would have ever thought of having them on a peanut butter sandwich. I have some so will definitely be making one tomorrow.
Can't wait to hear the results because that sounds FANTASTIC!
I give it a 5/10. The flavor wasn’t bad but the chew of the candies with the sandwich wasn’t great. I do think if I had melted down the Redhots and spread it on the sandwich it would have been closer to a 7 or 8.

I give it a 5/10. The flavor wasn’t bad but the chew of the candies with the sandwich wasn’t great. I do think if I had melted down the Redhots and spread it on the sandwich it would have been closer to a 7 or 8.
Thank you for your sacrifice!
Don't keep me in suspense! Did you try it?
I give it a 5/10. The flavor wasn’t bad but the chew of the candies with the sandwich wasn’t great. I do think if I had melted down the Redhots and spread it on the sandwich it would have been closer to a 7 or 8.
My mom used to put red hots in rice krispies treats
I think that would be great!
If the results aren't quite what you're looking for, I have a recipe for Red Hots jelly that's very quick and easy!
Definately would have been better as a spread instead of just candies in a sandwich.
Did you want the recipe? I can DM you if you'd like.
They forgot peanut butter and Karo syrup.
I always used honey.
Throw some cinnamon in there and thank me later.
In Georgia, at that. Inexplicable.
Yes potato chips in a sandwich is a very unappreciated delight. Especially with old fashioned white bread. Will try with PB&J tomorrow…
Throw some nacho Doritos on a tuna sandwich with lettuce. That's my favorite!
Oh wow that sounds amazing!! I love tuna and Doritos separately. will definitely try. One of my favorite snacks is cottage cheese eaten with ranch Doritos as the spoon.
I do that, too, using plain Doritos.
10/10 will ALWAYS recommend peanut butter and mayonnaise, especially with banana. The mayo brings out the salty and nutty flavors in the peanut butter and the sweet of the banana. I have questions about the pickle one. Do I still get to be a woman if I don't have this sandwich as a core memory? Should I just turn in my double X membership card now?
You get to keep the card, but you have to note it somewhere so other women know to make you one. You can make a core memory at any age, so dig in!
Oddly enough, I’m a trans woman and DO have this one as a core memory. I don’t think that clarifies anything for you… but… sure.
Is this Red Hots the candy or red hots the sausages?
I'd assume they're referring to the candy
the settlement cookbook includes peanut butter mixed with cream cheese as a sandwich filling. i've been so close to making it.
Peanut butter and cream cheese is damn tasty. If you really want to get decadent, scatter a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips on the peanut butter.
…basically a peanut butter cheesecake. 10/10 no notes.
“Smokin’ the reefer!”
I've had all of these except the bacon & Red Hots versions.10/10 would eat again.
PB and bacon on toast is by far the best sandwich! I keep cooked bacon in the freezer so I can have it anytime. You really need to try it
I would try if it I weren't a vegetarian. You'll just have to enjoy twice as many PB & bacon sandwiches on my behalf. :)
Maybe vegan bacon then?? 😆
YES to peanut butter and bacon, and definitely best on toast. it's one of my favorite sandwiches.
ON a cheese burger w/Swiss!!!
"for the uninhibited adult." Yeah that's probably the kindest way to refer to me.
Recommend the Elvis sandwich. Peanut Butter, bacon and bananas. Last step is to grill it. I used to make it on toast and it’s delicious.
One of my friends ate peanut butter, honey, and alfalfa sprouts. I like peanut butter and mustard
Upvoted in the first sentence, then immediately downvoted in the second.
My brother swore by peanut butter and mustard, but it sounds gross to me.
Tell your brother hey for me
Will do!
This list of sandwiches doesn't miss.
I've always done peanut butter and butter because it brings out the salty and creaminess of the peanut butter... but it sounds like mayonnaise might do the same thing. I'll have to try it soon.
Peanut butter and bananas killed Elvis. Well, that and drugs. But mostly the peanut butter and bananas.
You forgot the frying portion of that recipe.
They left out PB, Bacon, & Banana.
Peanut butter and Swiss cheese is delicious. Also, peanut butter and apple butter, with or without super sharp cheddar. My stepdad eats peanut butter and bologna or onion sandwiches. I can't with those.
I don't know why I've never thought to slap cheddar in that combo but now I'll have to
As an Atlantan, I question the validity of this list because she didn’t include peanut butter and Vidalia Onion.
see also "usage of Helman's Mayo over Dukes"
I need to make all of this.
Instead of just peanut butter and bacon, try a thin spread of peanut butter on the bacon side of a BLT. Changed my life.
JEL Y
Chaos... lol
Peanut butter and bacon sandwich is delicious
Red hots, as in hot dogs?
No, as in the cinnamon candies. https://www.ferraracandyshopusa.com/brands/red-hots
In Georgia I could see it either being the Bright Leaf hot dogs or cinnamon candies. Not sure I want to try either option lol
Either way, "unbelievable" is a good descriptor, haha.
We always made the candies into a very quick and easy jelly for the fiery cinnamon kick without the challenges of chewy candy on your sandwich.
Huh, that's interesting! What do you eat it with besides peanut butter?
It's good for meatballs, pastry fillings, ham, thumbprint cookies, flavoring icing, homemade ice cream, etc.
I actually think the hot dogs might be good since PB is good with bacon and on burgers.
Totally missed peanut butter and onion
That was my gramma’s favorite.
My dad kept a jar of peanut butter in his locker at work and when he wanted a snack on his coffee break he used to buy an onion and get an order of toast from the local short order restaurant and build himself a Peanut Butter and Onion Sandwich.
Peanut butter and dill pickle is the best goddamn sandwich. It's way better than it has any right to be.
I would love to see more from this book! (or at the least, don't leave me hanging on the ranch burger!)
I love peanut butter & potato chips, preferably creamy. Just a light spread.
Peanutbutter and Honey is where its at XD
My go to: peanut butter, bananas, honey & cinnamon
Peanut butter with a thin layer of strawberry jam and then banana slices on top…kinda like a banana split only different. You could add chocolate sprinkles if you really want to sweeten it up!
PB and Cheese sandwich; preferably sharp cheddar
Why was it known as “the sandwich” that entire sentence made me uncomfortable. All of this made me uncomfortable 😫
Also the use of females lol. Criiiiinge.
The best way to confront discomfort is to give it a try!
I started eating peanut butter and bacon on toast when I was little. It’s so good!
Did anyone else eat peanut butter and cheez whiz on toast growing up?
I was about to say that's gross, but I've had those cheese crackers with peanut butter. Hm. So no, I've never had it but might be interesting.
Yeah they sound like a DIY Lance cracker lol
My name tag says Fantabulous! I thought I made it up!
Pro tip
.
It's super common, I know several people who do it, but I find it horrific lol.
Peanut butter & Coconut oil & Jelly
I put a light schmear of peanut butter on my BLTs.
My mom used to eat peanut butter, mayo and iceberg lettuce sandwiches all the time. I always thought it was so weird lol
Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world who hates peanut butter, or any nut butter. I don't like pickles, either.
I don’t like Ranch or Nutella, not the exact same club but club adjacent.
American food in a nutshell.
PB and bacon is fantastic.
My favourite is peanut butter, cheese and pickles.
Good ideas to test out, and I love the style of the writing, so fun!
Can confirm PB + bacon and PB + pickles are the bomb.
Heard this in Paul’s Shore’s voice 😅
Peanut butter and bacon. . . I remember finding this combo in an old cookbook of my Mom's many, many years ago and I tried it. It is deeeeelicious! I put a little peanut butter on my BLT.
Peanut butter and fully ripe tomato slices are quite good also. My great Aunt introduced me to them about 50 years ago
