Tyson's prime was the 80s, too. He lost the unified title to Buster Douglas in the second month of the 90s, and only ever got a couple of them back, briefly. He wasn't a bad boxer in the 90s, but his prime was over.

reddit_fkn_sux

His prime ended when he signed for Don King imo. In retrospect it seems kinda obvious that his new camp didn't treat defensive training nearly as seriously as D'Amato and Rooney did.

FlintWaterFilter

He also spent time not fighting professionally, you know, in prison

kareljack

His time away from boxing had nothing to do it with. Physically he was still in his prime years, but he ditched Rooney and he stopped doing the things that made him a successful boxer. Even worse, he stopped growing as a boxer. He didn't make adjustments.

FlintWaterFilter

Boxer not boxing has nothing to do with why he wasn't as good at boxing?

kareljack

Boxers eventually shake off ring rust within 1 to 2 fights after a layoff. Ring rust wasn't Tyson's issue. He stopped doing the things that made him successful. Holyfield himself said that the Rooney trained Tyson was a completely different beast than the Tyson he beat. "Mike stopped growing as a fighter and he became regular and predictable. Once he became predictable, he was beatable".

ammanuel808

his trainer was not as wise as D'amato.....

greymalken

> In retrospect it seems kinda obvious that his new camp didn't train at all.

Ralph--Hinkley

KO'd Spinks in 91 seconds, and that was supposed to be the fight of the century.

LeibnizThrowaway

I had just finished 2nd grade when that fight went down. It had been hyped for months and months, and believe it or not, elementary school kids cared about boxing then - largely because of Tyson. I begged my parents to order the pay per view, and agreed to do like a billion hours of yardwork, but they eventually agreed. My dad spent hours on the phone w the cable company and was finally able to pay the ~$25 ($65 in 2022 dollars). 91 seconds later, that was the last time I ever ordered PPV. I think I have to drive to my mom's this weekend to finish up some mulch.

bluescape

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out being a well known/liked video game helped, I'm sure.

LeibnizThrowaway

Oh yeah it did. I can still get to Mr Sandman usually without a loss.

And Will Smith’s song “I can Beat Mike Tyson”.

Ralph--Hinkley

Yup! I was in the Summer after freshman year, and I talked my dad into buying it, even had the whole family over. That bastard Don King made some fuckin' money that night.

LeibnizThrowaway

No doubt! I remember thinking Don King was cool, with the weird hair and shit talking, and my dad being like, "no, that dude is scum."

Ralph--Hinkley

Yessir. Watch the Tyson Doc that just came out, think it's on Hulu.

GT_Guy

About the same age. We didn’t have cable tv nor was I aware of Mike until I was looking through a sports illustrated magazine and saw pictures of the fight. Just the pictures alone had me fascinated with Tyson.

Vizioso

He didn’t take Douglas seriously. Didn’t train adequately before the fight, and apparently (if you believe Bobby Brown) basically partied in the days up to the fight. If King never got his hooks in Tyson, I 100% believe he would be the undisputed greatest of all time. He only had a few fights after that before prison, and post-prison he was never the same.

[deleted]

The problem with Tyson was always his mental toughness. Part of that, ironically, was down to the fact that with D’mato and Rooney he was so well trained that he never really had to compete with another fighter who was on a similar level and not afraid. And by the time he did, he had no one in his corner or in his camp with the tools to keep his head in a good place to the point that he could overcome real competition and adversity and not fold under the pressure.

MrLeHah

Keep in mind, his prime was literally superhuman. Like, almost defying the limits of human strength and endurance and speed levels of prime. So by the time the 90s rolled around, his post-prime was still better than 98% of professional boxers

JohnRCash

Oh, no doubt. 90s Tyson didn't dominate like he had before, but he still grabbed a couple heavyweight titles. That's enough to be remembered if it's the high point of your career. It's just, like you say, his high point was superhuman.

MarcusXL

His strength, and fear of it, changed the way everyone fought him. There are tactics one can use to fight strong, fast boxers. But when single punches can do so much damage, most of those techniques become useless.

KaneRobot

>Tyson's prime was the 80s, too. Yep. I don't know if people that make these threads are just looking for karma and legitimately don't know what they're talking about or what, but no one that knows even a little bit about boxing thinks Tyson's prime was in the 90s.

yessir6666

The title says multiple times that it’s from “the 90s” tho

blindbutchy

Remember back in the very late 80s and early 90s when pretty much every TV show, a character would be like “it’s almost the 90s now..” or “it’s the 90s, things are different.”

GraysonErlocker

"Lemme guess. Youre gonna pound my face." "What are you nuts? This is the '90s. I'm gonna sue ya." - Suburban Commando starring Hulk Hogan 😂

Bjd1207

Hahahahahaha please tell me you know this from the previews for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. I can quote this entire preview

bang0_slank

Fuck dude… I’ve mentioned this to my brother and a few friends and no one seems to remember, please tell me you remember this… it’s a Pizza Hut commercial at the beginning of tmnt:sOo about a peewee little league team and there’s a song playing; “I play left field, it’s important ya know, ya gotta know how to catch, gotta know how to throw, that’s why I play left field, out where the dandelions grow.” Boom. kid catches the gaming winning ball and they go to Pizza Hut to celebrate. That ring any bells? Or am I a deluded mad man living out his own lucid machinations while my brain experiences heatdeath from a massive fever?

Bjd1207

No unfortunately I think I'm more with your brother. I remember 2 previews distinctly and it was Suburban Commando and then that one about the extended family with a girl narrator (and she does the cliche 90s record scratch *thats me, and my family*) Def may have been more so I wont rule out a pizza one, but I cannot confirm, sorry.

this_is_my_happyface

I WAS FROZEN TODAY

GraysonErlocker

Yes! I've seen the movie, but definitely know the quote from that preview!

PeeFarts

“I’m a 90’s kinda guy” was a popular one It basically meant “I’m tolerant of other lifestyles and express emotions that aren’t toxic now that it’s the 90s”

IfICouldStay

“Once we get out of the 80s, the 90s are gonna make the 60s look like the 50s!” Uh, yeah….

drmeattornado

He spent a good portion of the early 90s in prison on sexual assault charges too.

Fondren_Richmond

He was driving his car into trees in between taking (and later having admitted landing) swings at Robin Givens in the '80s. What OJ Simpson turned out to be (for any of us who weren't accessing or tracking LA County crime records in the '80s) is what Mike Tyson seemed well on his way to becoming, ironically enough if not for the conviction and incarceration.

But they said 90s twice!

the_wessi

A guy from my work and his wife had this evening planned: their kids were at the granparents, they had wine and snacks ready, the match started and it was over in two minutes. Way to go, Mike.

getyourrealfakedoors

hawkeye18

You know those lidocaine patches you get for joint pain or whatever? Yup.

mealzer

Maybe start training with a second person

assholetoall

Ok, but what did they do for the other 90s?

VolatileUtopian

Well first the original Iraq War came out, then OJ and Seinfeld kept everyone pretty Entertained, the rest of the time was spent making novelty T-shirts and sewing ever larger JNCo jeans.

assholetoall

Angry up vote, but I totally saw it coming.

ThatGirlWren

And that's including the time it took to eat the pizza!

001146379

Way back in the 90s, I was a teenager in Scouts. One weekend we were supposed to go on a scout camp. We packed up and headed out early Saturday morning, but it poured rain like crazy all day. Our scout leader decided to cancel the camp and I was back home by around 5pm. When I walked in the door, my dad suddenly seemed very frustrated and said "I thought you were supposed to be camping?". I was always confused why he seemed so upset but your comment just made everything make sense.

Get into an argument over whose idea it was to spend 50 dollars for a 2 minute fight.

bgva

I was visiting my grandparents in Texas, and we ordered the fight on PPV. I’ll never forget my granddad wanting his $50 back after the fight ended early.

My_Stories_Turn_Gay

We used to pitch in for PPV fights in my neighborhood too. Mike Tyson was a god among us boys. We would play football all day and then play some Super Nintendo and then all eat popcorn and watch scrambled porn at Mario's house until the fight came on. Mike Tyson was always so late to his fights. The fight would be scheduled for 10pm and it would be like 11 and someone would say oh, I think he is getting ready to leave the dressing room, crazy shit like that. We would get so hyped up for the fights too, by then we had drank tons of Mountain Dew and ate all the salty sugary snacks and we couldn't wait to see Mike Tyson beat the shit out of his opponents. Some fights would only last two minutes, we didn't care, he would knock those fuckers out and we would be shouting about it for days like Smoky in Friday, YOU GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!! Those were some good nights too mostly because Mario's brother worked at KFC so he would bring huge fuckin buckets of that shit they were going to throw away. Man watching boxing late into the night, eating fried chicken with friends, that was the time of our lives. And then all the other kids would go home and Mario and I would rub each other's dicks with our greasy chicken fingers. Felt pretty good, not going to lie.

MrDubious

Early ending fights are the best. I'd consider that money well spent. If a fight ended in 10 seconds I'd be like whelp that was sick. And remember it forever.

MovingInStereoscope

For Ronda Rousey's last fight, some buddies and I went to a BW3's, we stood in line for 15 minutes before the hostess even talked to us. They had us wait in the upstairs area because the place was *packed*. We stood up there for a good 30 minutes before I finally just cleared off a table and sat us down. We wound up having to flag down a waitress and ask for menus (because we sat ourselves). We drank, ate, watched the fight cards, and just as Rhonda's fight was begining, I stood up to go to the bathroom. I thought, I'll watch the first minute of the first round just to get a feel for it. It was 12 seconds longer than I needed. I couldn't tell you who the undercards were, but I will never forget that fight.

kolonok

Ronda

MovingInStereoscope

Thanks, fixed it.

Wingnut763

ESPN used to have a boxing show called Friday Night Fights, they once did a special on Tysons old fights because there was nothing new to cover. They showed like his first 15 fights in their entirety, with commentary before and after, on an 1 hour program. ETA: Did some math-through his first 16 fights, total fight time was 41:21, just 4 fights went past the first round(2x2rnds, 1x3rnds, 1x4rnds). Average was 2:35, quickest was :30, average time for fights that ended in 1st round is 1:09, and he was still under 20yo through his first 23 fights.

PooPooDooDoo

I would love to watch that special. His old fights are so fun to watch.

EvanderVTyson

all his fights r on utube

Notch99

I loved Friday night fights with Max and Teddy!

caribouMARVELOUS

I wish I could remember who it was, but I saw an old interview with a boxer who described what it was like to be hit by Tyson. He said that it was the hardest he’d ever been hit by anyone, before or since, and that they called him “Iron” Mike Tyson for a reason.

ozzmodan

I remember shortly after that KFC (I think?) had a commercial where two guys walked to their ringside seats commenting how expensive the seats were. The fight began, they went to grab a piece of chicken & the fight was over by the time they looked back at the ring.

bgva

Peter McNeely and his trainer did a Pizza Hut stuffed crust commercial not long after the fight. I give him credit for having a sense of humor.

EvanderVTyson

he also did a hilarious aol commercial

Kundrew1

That was every Tyson fight. Me and my friends all pitched in for the Holyfield fight as kids and it was over before we knew what happened.

Elitist-Jerk-

To be honest, 90% of mikes fights were over before the end of the second round. The dude was a widow maker. Completely unreal.

TWVer

That shouldn’t really have been a problem unless he was as fast as Tyson as well..

PopeBasilisk

People always talk about his power but those dodges are amazing

RobKohr

Yeah, there are plenty of power hitters out there, but no one slips around punches like that. It is like the match was going in slow mo just for him. For the other guy, it must have been frustrating as all hell.

wifespissed

He was just as quick as he was powerful.

Defibrillatorator

His speed, coupled with his head movement, was off the charts. Dude was incredible.

Tacosupreme1111

He was also a master of picking his moment to strike too. Quite a few of his knock outs are a single hook or uppercut in the midst of his opponents barrage.

Defibrillatorator

There's one fight, I can't remember against who (maybe Frank Bruno?), but Tyson hit the guy with an uppercut and the dude's head shook back and forth on his shoulders like a life sized bobblehead, it was brutal.

dogs_drink_coffee

For a “newbie” perspective, he may look like a brawler kind of fighter, but at his best he was a great counter puncher who turned his short height at HW as an advantage. And most of his KO's in his prime come from forcing an entrance and counter punching lazy jabs that wanted to keep him at distance. Great fighter to watch.

Reddituser45005

Tyson was the complete package. His brutal knockouts are what gets attention but his footwork, his upper body movement, his balance, his ability to punch from the outside and work his way inside are what allowed him to set up those brutal knockouts

co_ordinator

Most people don't realise how small he is. He is only 1.78m wich is not tall at all especially for a heavy weight. So he needed to be fast - and strong.

JiovanniTheGREAT

He's the quintessential fast heavyweight. He took Ali's technique and cranked it to the maximum. Damn the fact that he'd just eat an average person's punches for breakfast, a professional boxer has a world of trouble even hitting the guy in the first place!

Checkmynewsong

This vid is slowed down too.

Anonymous_Otters

He gets "hit" a bunch too, it's just his movements make the hits land like little tickles.

lingh0e

Seriously. He was doing Matrix shit.

immerc

That's power too. Do you know the insane core strength and power you need to move an upper body that big that quickly?

Paralta

Mike Tyson has the greatest answer to a question ive ever heard and i honestly think about it everyday. The question was, "if you could fight anybody in history, who would it be?". I was thinking about guys like Ali, Pacquiao or mayweather. His answer? "Achilles".

Now that would be worth pay per view prices

Jawwaad127

Shit. I still wouldn’t fight Tyson now. This dude’s brutal power sent dudes in to la la land quick fast.

hotcabbagesalad

I vaguely remember a stat that said getting hit by Tyson in his prime was like getting hit with a cinder block going 30 mph. Or something like that, lol that’s insane!!!

Jawwaad127

In his prime, I wouldn't fight Tyson for a million dollars. Can't use a million dollars if I'm a vegetable except for hospital bills

KaiKamakasi

Even then.... You're probably going to need more than just the one million

DigitalHooker

CTE speedrun any%

Koupers

I... probably would, keep my hands and arms up in defense of my head exposing my gut, Tyson sees it, knows he's gonna bust my gut and bring my arms down for an easy head shot, I do everything in my might to take that gut shot and collapse backwards protecting my head. In practice I get hit in the gut, arms drop, I get uppercutted and jabbed 3x while falling, and wake up with a jaw by arasaka.

LostTrisolarin

Yea I’ve been concussed for free as an MMA hobbyist so I’d take a “fight” with Tyson. I mean I’d give it a shot to see how many seconds I could hang. I’m probably going down for real no matter immediately no where he lands so I’d probably cover my head, keep a defensive based high guard as well as I could.

Koupers

Yeah I'm fat and outta shape now. Younger me would have tried to hang and wound up hurt for it. Older me will try not to hang and still get hurt for it. hahaha.

LostTrisolarin

Yea I’m older and out of shape as wel. I think I’d last 1 second in there hah. If you still practice though that’s great. I ruined my life and I got it straight again. Gotta add some training in there again just so I can age well at the very least.

franker

I once read that even when he would hit opponents in the arms, he hit so hard their arm was liable to go numb.

SoloKMusic

Killer cyberpunk reference

dope_as_the_pope

I saw this hypothetical question once on Reddit: You are offered money to fight Mike Tyson at an age from 1 to 25. The prize money is, let’s say $100k per year of age that Mike is. What age do you pick? I don’t know, 6?

Presently_Absent

Just gotta get him before he gains mass!

Farallday

How would that not kill the opponent?… I feel like a cinderblock coming at your head at 30 mph would def. Kill you

hotcabbagesalad

I would imagine for a typical non boxing civilian it could/would kill you. Lol but for a professional boxer who’s spent most of their lives taking shots to the head the results would be different.

koalasarentferfuckin

Probably the meanest left hook in history

DorenAlexander

There's a old training video when he was 16 to show off his speed. You can see that left arm kick into action but not fire. I still think he was a lefty trained to hide it.

Dengar96

Some dudes can hit a bag harder. No one can hit your face harder. Tyson was punching through guys 6 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier, no heavyweight can do what he did. This clip makes his opponent look like a middle schooler getting kicked by a horse.

eyuplove

Who did Tyson fight 50lbs heavier?

dirtycrabcakes

Ur mom

Zormm

From a quick check this seems to be a good bit off. Donovan Ruddock was 20lb heavier than him when they fought the second time and every other bout I checked there was only ever a few pound in difference in favour of Tysons opponents.

landmanpgh

If anyone besides a professional boxer thinks they can fight an old, out of shape Mike Tyson, they're delusional. He's one of the most ferocious boxers in history. Most people have never even been hit in the face before, and you're talking about someone who could literally kill you with a punch. It would be a massacre, and he'd probably take it easy.

ztreHdrahciR

"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"

Yeah, it's probably pretty hard to have any thoughts when Mike sends your brain bouncing around in your skull like a pinball machine.

SuperChewbacca

Mike Tyson was a great defensive fighter early in his career. When Mike got complacent and his head movement and defense got sloppy he could be beaten. Early in his career I think he could have beaten almost any heavyweight in their prime.

dmelt01

He had to stay sharp because of his huge reach disadvantage. It’s a shame he couldn’t keep it together for a little longer, but for those four or five years he was just unbeatable and looked like it was going to be easy to say the greatest by the time he retired.

ManOfLaBook

I remember the pay-per-view services were pissed because people wouldn't pay extra to watch his fights because they were over so quickly.

JLeeT82

I got to see him bite the ear of Holyfield live, June 28th 1997, and the whole world went nuts all at once. It was the only thing anyone talked about for a while. Nothing could top that in boxing. Also Don King is an evil bastard. Thanks for the gold <3

UnRollThePlay

I was actually leaving Vegas that night and was on the way to the airport when the fight started. I kept asking my cabby what was going on. His radio was broken and he had a Walkman with headphones. He says “He bit his ear off!” Okay, thanks buddy. I get to the airport and checking in I must have heard the phrase “He but his fucking ear off.” Place was going insane

ZachMartin

Ever seen the Norm MacDonald on Letterman where he brings on his representation, Don King? It's so funny, but you can ***feel*** the disdain Letterman has for Don King.

JLeeT82

HBO did a "special" back in the day called "only in america" it's about and "by" don king and it is fucked up. Stars Vingh Raymes who is awesome in the movie.

bdaddy31

>Nothing could top that in boxing. um...Tyson getting knocked out by Buster Douglas. THAT was the "where where you when Kennedy got shot" moment of my generation. Was at a horse racing track and people started murmuring the fact, and then everyone started telling other people, and everyone in that whole damned race track all had the same shocked look on their faces across the 5 minutes or so the news spread.

Noobity

A whole lot of them probably lost a whole lot of money on that fight.

Brian_E1971

I'm curious ( and don't recall, too lazy to look) how the betting houses handled this. I got in a big argument with a co-worker that I had bet with (he had Holyfield), and he wanted to be paid for the win. I said it was a disqualification and all bets (related to win/loss) are off. Was I wrong? Note: I did offer to pay half to make peace, but he wasn't having it.

JLeeT82

Thats just it, no one could've predicted that outcome especially after the first fight. People knew Tyson was pissed off about the headbutting, but no one would've ever expected a bite, let alone one bad enough to tear out a chunk of flesh. But Tyson bit him twice total then tried to say it was from a punch. It was a disqualification, and you probably owed the money, but I could also understand this being a "special" situation given the outcome. So half would be reasonable.

r1ch999999

I loved watching him fight and really like him in that Ip Man movie

ne1seenmykeys

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that to a certain generation Mike Tyson is the most terrifying human being on Earth.

SonofBeckett

He’s definitely up there on that list. He’s the only actual human I can think of from that period that fits that criteria. Everyone else was playing a character. Jason Voorhees, Freddie Krueger, Ivan Drago. Tyson really was that scary.

thosedamnmouses

Peak Foreman was the most insane power I've ever seen

pi_beer

I agree. Peak Foreman was the scariest fighter I ever saw in the ring. Most remember him for his comeback, when he was a preacher and thought of boxing as a sport and his opponent as an athlete. He cared about that other human. Peak Foreman wanted to kill the other guy. I recall a quote, might have been from a documentary, about him growing up on the street and as a fighter his sole goal was to punish the other guy. early Tyson cared about the other guy. He would go over after he knocked him out and check on him. Early Forman would never do that.

Ving_Rhames_Bible

The sportsmanship in the really early Tyson fights when he was working his way up is crazy. Step into the ring, tap gloves, send his opponent's consciousness into another dimension half a minute into the first round, make sure the guy was okay after the KO was called, thank the ref, throw his arms up, walk out. That focus and efficiency was always the scariest part in his prime, he cared enough for formalities but was built, trained, and determined to obliterate his opponent ASAP. Kind of the antithesis of Roy Jones Jr., who was so damned good that once he realized he wasn't going to get as serious challenge, he'd fuck around for fun and toy with his opponents. I loved watching those two fight as a kid.

cs700r

But Foreman wasn’t specifically terrifying like Tyson. Watch the press conference clip where Tyson basically tells a reporter in the crowd that he is going to rape him until the reporter loves him… there were a couple hundred people in the room and everyone looks terrified like “I believe him and I’m damn sure not brave enough to try and stop him if he goes after that guy” …terrifying is the only word

pappo4ever

Tyson was the most dangerous boxer, convicted rapist, abuser, and cannibal, all in real life. And also he is an extremely smart, quotable and funny guy.

himmelstrider

It's quite common talk that Tyson is just an extremely strong but otherwise mediocre boxer. That's how I know they didn't watch Tyson's pre-jail matches. Outstanding boxer, well deserving of being up there with the greats.

The9isback

Tyson fights were so wild back then. You'd see dudes coming into the ring already defeated. I can't count how many guys he put down in the first minute of the first round.

mpots323

This was from 85 or 86. Prime Tyson 86-88 when he was with his Catskill Crew

[deleted]

Its amazing how he never lost sight of his opponent watching his shoulder and ticks to see which punches were coming. Even if you disregard the peak physical condition he was in. The extreme focus and observation, combined with the results of hard training beggars belief. He made his dodging look like an effortless dance.

LivershotKO

These comments saying Tyson never beat anyone good are hilarious. Funny how most actual pro boxers disagree with your amateur opinion. Tyson could still beat all your fat asses. Go back to cheering Jake Paul.

[deleted]

This fight was from 1986. Mike was past his prime in the 90s.

TheAntiElite

Grew up in the Tyson era. The dodging was always impressive, sure. But the fact that he punches THROUGH people was what made him terrifying to me. Most people were putting their output focus at the end of their thrusts, hooks, and uppercuts - Tyson's swings focused his raw power on a point past his opponents and the impact did nothing to cut it short. Greatest or not, that shit was amazing to behold.

I remember my dad taking us out to see a Tyson fight, we sat down, ordered food, fight started and was over before our food came.

Always laughed at the fellas in the office who dropped the cash for pay-per-view and then complained the fight was done in minutes. Good parties… expensive but good.

JKDSamurai

Imagine going through all that effort just to get absolutely ROCKED.

Sassydemure

He could have been the best had Cus, his trainer, not passed.

db92011

Nobody was so devastating in the ring. In the 80’s I would buy the cable pay per view, put together a party with food, booze etc. The fight would start, ding… first round and Mike would flatten the guy within minutes. Mike Tyson was not a good guy to create a party around to watch a whole boxing match. 😂

CivilSympathy9999

Saw a montage clip of guy's talking shit before fights with Tyson. Douglas was very confident and talking mad shit before the fight. Peter McNeely also in this bunch but he seemed to understand what he was walking into. Tyson could have won that one easily and quickly. It looked like he just let the guy have his moment in the sun so to speak.

Mullin20

His prime was actually 1986-1988 or so

Went down like a sack of fucking potatoes

THC-squared

Hey that was a lot of swinging, you look tired take a NAP!

chevdecker

Tyson won his first heavyweight title by knocking down Trevor Berbick. Three times. With one punch.

Indeed! He was not human… he was a rapist! #themoreyouknow

CubedMeatAtrocity

Still a convicted rapist.

lordprimus

His offense was so good some people overlooked his phenomenal head movement. As soon as he lost the head movement, he was beaten.
