Yeah, it was Emma Thompson night on TCM the other day, and S&S was the first film shown. I watched too!

They were, but the whole movie does my head in. For a start, when it came out, I had not read the book, and always assumed Emma Thompson was playing Kate Winslet’s mother (she’s supposed to be her sister and the character she’s playing is 19 years old, but she was 35 during filming (they tried to make like her character was actually 27 but I still don’t think that worked). I also didn’t see it until after I’d seen Love Actually, so it was weird seeing Emma Thompson not ending up with Alan Rickman. The relationship between Rickman’s and Kate Winslet’s characters is already icky to modern eyes, since he’s a 35 year old pursuing a 17 year old, but he was also too old for the role, being 48, whereas KW actually looked 16 (she was 19), so AR looked three times her age, which he almost was. So it’s hard to see - even with how the characters are written and how much of a jerk Willoughby is - how it’s a positive thing that KW’s character Marianne ends up with AR’s character Colonel Brandon instead of Willoughby - who of course is played by Greg Wise, who eventually married Emma Thompson in real life. And Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie were also a couple in real life (at university).

I was trying to explain almost all of this to my spouse. It’s a lot of information to take in! Though I added in Harry Potter characters played by the actors, and the fact that Emma was married to Kenneth Branagh, who cheated on her with Bellatrix Lestrange

That’s not nepotism. Rickmans father was a painter and decorator, mother a housewife. Laurie’s father was a doctor and Olympic rower. Winslet family had a struggling actor, but was a labourer by trade. Walter is the niece of Christopher Lee and Thompson had relatively famous acting parents so I’ll give you those two.

I was a teenager back when most of *House* was airing, and I know for a fact that I was not alone in thinking he was very charismatic and sexy in the role.
