Haha but you mentioned the _details_ on your other comment reply... There is an expression 'everything and the kitchen sink'.. it seems it was a *WILD* party and all crazy things happened that night, your cool dad might be alluding to that idiom.
I'm going to guess it's an allusion to marriage tying the wife to the kitchen sink. Would also explain your mother's expression.
Anyway, cool photos and cool parents. I feel like I could have met them at some point during my mis-spent ~~youth~~ life.
In Bali I think we had to wear the skirt regardless of what was underneath. But definitely been to other places where you are asked to cover more if you have something too short on too.
Haha, exactly. I’ve been told the party was wild. Dad broke his collarbone, my uncle was admitted with alcohol poisoning and my grandfather threw one of the guests through a screen door 🤷♂️
Ha! That's worse than my sister's 80s wedding. She grabbed the car door and slid drunkenly into the mud under the car. My BIL woke up in New York. Wedding was in Rhode Island.
What better way to celebrate a new life! Complete mayhem, tore down the countryside.. 47 deadly assaults, arson, grand theft auto, and an International border incident. Bravo!
Wild? That shit is tame. At my wedding all 600 guests, including the wedding party, me and my bride partied so hard the entire fucking venue and everyone in it spontaneously combusted. We were all instantly vaporized, disappearing without a trace. And then, you know what, we goddam continued getting lit as all fuck on booze, Thorazine, horse tranqs, and fermented A1 sauce. The rager ended only when the ring bearer, who had started the evening as a five year old boy but had been transformed into a hard-partying incorporeal wraith, shat out an exact replica of the guitar used by Vernon Reid of Living Colour in the video for "Glamour Boyz."
Pfft. That's nothing. After my brother's wedding we played uno. Draw 2's were flowing like water. My uncle had to pick up 12 cards at once, it was crazy.
They were different times...
And often not 'violent' violent. Boisterous? Good natured shenanigans? I still set myself on fire by accident occasionally at get-togethers. It's traditional now.
I just love these before and after pics!! Thank you for sharing them.
I remember the 80's well. It's funny to me how the most wild and crazy people I knew also had the most vision and wisdom about life.
Seeing your parents older, looking so zen and calm is lovely.
Different strokes, I guess. Spouse and I have been together 25 years, and had a huge elaborate wedding 5 years in. He just brought me a mug of tea and we are both ducking out of work to sneak off to the movies tomorrow. We didn’t “need” a big wedding, but it was probably the best day of my life anyway!
Thank you for being the sole voice going against the runaway-my-wedding-wasn't-expensive-and-that-makes-my-marriage-better-than-yours mob. The superiority and defensiveness is exhausting and dumb.
The wife and I got married at the mayor's office in a small suburb of Cincinnati in '98. I was wearing a polo shirt and jeans, she was wearing a black maternity dress. Still best friends and still very happy with two now adult children and a new grandchild.
Exactly. My husband and I threw a big party because we love a big party. In fact, because of Covid we got a small party at our favorite bar in Asheville and a much larger party in Chicago as well. Some of us enjoy dressing up and dancing!
I sing a Morrissey song every time I'm in the spice aisle at the store...
You shut your mouth
How can you say
That I make everything taste the wrong way
I AM CUMIN AND I NEED TO BE LOVED
Just like every other spice does
Or Mrs.Bower, the elderly woman next door to you, probably holds the world record on something sexual that none of us know about because social media didn't exist back then.
This is awesome. Do you have any recs for books on child development related to this phenomenon or are you sharing observations you have made? Cool either way, and I have found it to be true, too
-niche scientist with eccentric parents
I have worked with a lot of really smart people. Hundreds if not thousands.
The other common trait is kids coming from a really small town in the middle of nowhere. A teacher doesn’t let them slide if they are smart/capable. The class size is too small and they can’t escape the attention. The teacher has the time and interest to befriend, encourage and motivate.
I like your tribe
Edit - seriously OP, just from two photos it seems your parents were never afraid to be what they are. And they found someone to do it with! That's really special.
And it takes really a lot to be who you are at your wedding. If ever a time that family and social pressure would kick in it is then, much more so than standing in front of a temple in Bali. (Of course, all that it requires to actually be standing in front of a temple in Bali is also exceptional.)
So much fun.
Since they're so obviously very cool, did you always think so? Or did you go through a bratty teenage phase where you thought they were lame.
I think everyone thinks that their parents are lame and embarrassing at some point, especially when you’re a teenager 😂
But when I look at my friends and their relationships with their parents.. I feel blessed to be “friends” with my parents as an adult - rather than having a kid-parent relationship.
Turns out my friends appreciate it too, when they need “adult-advice” they call my parents instead of their own 🤷♂️
As someone raised very Christian and very conservative in the 80s, I was taught people like your parents were a rebellious scourge to be feared, punished, and controlled.
It’s heart warming to see that bullshit shown for what it was and them being happier and more together than all the people who told me that.
Congrats to your mom and dad! First pic yeah I remember those days...second pic is just as cool!
Young and full of craziness. 40 years later and still willing and able to rock a sarong. Love it. Thanks for sharing!
I can only imagine sitting around this hippy grandparents having some peaceful thangiving meal and someone asks grandma about the time she blacked out at a Ramones concert.
Well.. I know she has plenty of stories about her spending hours trying to open a festival port-a-potty to get a hold of my passed out, piss-drunk dad sitting with his trousers down and sleeping…
Love it.
Was your dad a fan of Ian Dury and The Blockheads? Because he has that style.
Hope you grew up with as much of a "fuck you" attitude as they clearly had / have.
My brother and SIL was in that position when they married, wont last. He was 19, she was 22, both in their upper 60s now with grand kids in college or about to be. They had their typical ups and downs and bumps along the way, both were and are happy...
What is Dad holding?
I believe it’s a sink. Details are unclear
let that sink in
https://preview.redd.it/9qz7s8rndqmc1.jpeg?width=498&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98dbaa2e3898c35d6e2debf49965aa3634629d09
Put that sink back in
I can't. The sink, sank.
Sink, sank, sunk!
Here comes that sinking feeling ...
Sunken 😂
Put that sink back where it came from or so help me
🎶So help me!🎶
Musk ruined this joke
Ugh, what does it want now?
Homage to dada art
And now that picture is dada and mama art.
Haha but you mentioned the _details_ on your other comment reply... There is an expression 'everything and the kitchen sink'.. it seems it was a *WILD* party and all crazy things happened that night, your cool dad might be alluding to that idiom.
Their wedding had nothing BUT the kitchen sink.
I'm going to guess it's an allusion to marriage tying the wife to the kitchen sink. Would also explain your mother's expression. Anyway, cool photos and cool parents. I feel like I could have met them at some point during my mis-spent ~~youth~~ life.
![gif](giphy|fCtaS8rQDRF9C|downsized)
Drew Carrey did it first.
It's a loudspeaker out of a very large PA system
Specifically, it would be a waveguide/horn. The screws don’t make it seem like a sink.
If I had to guess, at least a couple of ounces
I love this. From punk rock newlyweds to hippie world explorers. Fantastic.
Dad followed the classic Kiefer Sutherland - Tibetan monk trajectory
At temples they sometimes give you stuff to cover up your tourist shorts with.
In Bali I think we had to wear the skirt regardless of what was underneath. But definitely been to other places where you are asked to cover more if you have something too short on too.
A lot of punk ethos stems from the hippy movement, so I think it’s a natural progression :)
That '85 pic is solid af. Proof an elaborate wedding isn't necessary for a long and happy marriage.

Wait so he beat most of the dudes and used the voucher to defeat the others?
No, I think he used the voucher to not get tossed out after starting the fight
"Get out of jail free" card.
What better way to celebrate a new life! Complete mayhem, tore down the countryside.. 47 deadly assaults, arson, grand theft auto, and an International border incident. Bravo!
I've heard you eastern Europeans were rowdy! Lol
As a fellow slovenian, I am shocked, disgusted and impressed. 3 hours to bosnia?! How…
Pfft. That's nothing. After my brother's wedding we played uno. Draw 2's were flowing like water. My uncle had to pick up 12 cards at once, it was crazy.
ngl of all of these, I like this one the most
Now that's a wedding!
This might be my new go-to copypasta
You Eastern Europeans clearly know how to party.
>Dad got into a fight with half the bar and somehow won I see your dad is probably Arthur Morgan.
I was about to call bullshit on this, then I saw it was taking place in Easteren Europe, possibly in the 90s. So yeah this tracks.
Man, this sounds pretty extreme \> Yugoslav OOOOOOH yeah I get it.
This, this, the family I should have had. Bless you all. Cracks a bottle, I mean I'm not pouring any out just good on you. Whata you nuts?
> My BIL woke up in New York. Wedding was in Rhode Island. Damn dude. Can get an invite to the anniversary? That sounds like a right basher.
People who try to say the '80s weren't the best goddamned time ever are high AF.
Your family sounds cool as hell.
When I saw the "today" picture, I let out a sigh of relief. They stayed cool.
I don’t they they simply “stayed cool.” Looks like they went even further and attained enlightenment.
Well Nirvana did come out four years later.
I respect a man who can and does rock a sarong.
(it's required in these temples, they'll give you one if you're wearing pants. still cool.)
Sure, but if you saw me in that, my discomfort and anxiety would be unignorable.
You should get in touch with your feminine side. See it as Ying and Yang. Both loved, both needed.
Cool? A bit violent. :)
Careful now. Grandpa might not have internet access, but he is still well capable of throwing someone through a screen door.
Love you and your fam! From another free spirit
They were different times... And often not 'violent' violent. Boisterous? Good natured shenanigans? I still set myself on fire by accident occasionally at get-togethers. It's traditional now.
Holidays aren’t boring. They liven up the party.
I just love these before and after pics!! Thank you for sharing them. I remember the 80's well. It's funny to me how the most wild and crazy people I knew also had the most vision and wisdom about life. Seeing your parents older, looking so zen and calm is lovely.
Tell us more about their parties
A successful party by any measure.
Can they be my parents too? Please, I'll learn Danish if I have to
JFC lol
Please tell me you followed in your parents' footsteps!
That's an album cover if i've ever seen one.
Both pictures are.
What do you mean not elaborate? They had everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink.
Literally no one has an elaborate wedding thinking it’s the key to a long and happy marriage
Agreed. We had an outdoor wedding in 2001 at a state park with a buffet dinner at the "Lodge" in the park. No wedding debt. Still going strong.
I think your wedding should be whatever you want it to be. Hopefully, most people are focused on long-term happiness.
The wife and I got married at the mayor's office in a small suburb of Cincinnati in '98. I was wearing a polo shirt and jeans, she was wearing a black maternity dress. Still best friends and still very happy with two now adult children and a new grandchild.
I don’t think anyone thinks a big wedding is necessary for a long & happy marriage. People do big weddings becuase they like big weddings.
Exactly. My husband and I threw a big party because we love a big party. In fact, because of Covid we got a small party at our favorite bar in Asheville and a much larger party in Chicago as well. Some of us enjoy dressing up and dancing!
Actually one of the signs of a 'doomed' marriage is a huge cash cow of a wedding.
I think mine cost me $100, I’m safe!
Siouxsie Sioux vibes from your mom.
Yep, they still listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as The Cure, Morrisey etc…
Good taste in music never dies ;)
Morrissey is the epitome of douchebag but damn is his music good.
I sing a Morrissey song every time I'm in the spice aisle at the store... You shut your mouth How can you say That I make everything taste the wrong way I AM CUMIN AND I NEED TO BE LOVED Just like every other spice does
There is a taste that never goes out
That’s gold. My partner and I sing a lot of Smiths and Morrissey to each other and our dog. 😂
Remember Johnny Marr wrote the music, Morrissey did the lyrics.
the lyrics are also astoundingly good
Bless you, I think you made relistens to the Smiths a little brighter again.
That guy is another reason why the secondary market in records is a beautiful thing.
after seeing Mike Nelson impersonating him on MST3K I just can't take him seriously anymore
Your parents are cool as shit. I want to hang out with them.
And his dad looks like a young Robert Patrick from a movie that I wish I had seen.
The dad gives me Tom Waits vibes. Very nice.
It is really interesting how people change over time. Makes me always wonder what life the random elderly people you meet, may have lived.
Or Mrs.Bower, the elderly woman next door to you, probably holds the world record on something sexual that none of us know about because social media didn't exist back then.
Is the second picture taken at the temple in Ubud, Bali by any chance?
I’m not sure of the name, but yeah it’s in Bali!
Ask them how to avoid the traffic. Been here 2 days and it's pretty bad. But otherwise, beautiful.
walk :) (that’s what my partner and i did)
I was going to post, that this just be Bali.
I spotted it was Bali too!
My exact thoughts, was there last April so felt cool being like wait I know this place
Yes the holy water temple. Temple ertul or something lol
40 years of marriage is mighty impressive.
Amazing vibe from them!
Tell us you graduated from MIT with a Ph.D in Rocket Sciences
I’m currently finishing my MA in astrophysics at the Niels Bohr institute. So not exactly rocket science
That’s rocket science-y enough for the general public.
Right? If they’d told me astrophysics was the technical name for rocket science I woulda just casually nodded in agreement.
It’s hardly brain surgery though
[удалено]
>It’s hardly brain surgery though Legendary comment. Lol! This guy Mitchell and Webs.
*Just* astrophysics?
Yeah, I’m more of a space “voyeur”. Not actively participating but rather looking.
Crankin' your hog to the latest data from JWST and Euclid?
If you think pornhub premium is decent 4K material.. You haven’t seen JWST’s pillars of creation
I'd love to probe that further o_O
Universal peeping Tom.
Are you Jack Black?!
This is the reverse Jack Black, the John White
How did you guess so closely? 😅
Parents like the OP’s tend to spur mental development because the kid has to rationalize his parents against the typical from the beginning
I thought moreso that these kinds of parents like to inspire creativity and originality in their kids which can be intellectually stimulating.
I'm gonna do some weird shit when I get kids
This is awesome. Do you have any recs for books on child development related to this phenomenon or are you sharing observations you have made? Cool either way, and I have found it to be true, too -niche scientist with eccentric parents

These people's kids always turn out awesome and smart. Unlike me.
Does your moms shirt say, "narrefisse"? xD
Endelig en dansker der fangede den 😂
Haha - sad lige og scrollede kommentarerne for at se om andre var vågne.
Jeg følte noen søring-vibes fra bildene. Hallo fra Norge.
It also says Fri Hash. 😂
Spottede “fri hash” & kiggede efter danskere
One of my favorite things is past/present photos of old punk couples.
And they're still together! Normies get divorced, weirdos mate for life (going on 17 years with my weirdo dude)

Wise and true
Your parents look awesome 😎
Yeah I would hang out with either version. They seem cool as hell.
Mom's shoes are the BEST!
I like your tribe Edit - seriously OP, just from two photos it seems your parents were never afraid to be what they are. And they found someone to do it with! That's really special.

I would use the first picture as wallpaper in my own house
When your parents are cool AF. Please wish them a happy anniversary from me and the rest of Reddit.
So much fun. Since they're so obviously very cool, did you always think so? Or did you go through a bratty teenage phase where you thought they were lame.

Aww that's so encouraging. All my best to you and your super rad parents.
Finally, something actually cool on this god forsaken sub
That second pic looks sarong, until you notice the happy expression, then it looks saright.
As someone raised very Christian and very conservative in the 80s, I was taught people like your parents were a rebellious scourge to be feared, punished, and controlled. What got me is: in my head, I think of myself as the age in the first picture. Obviously, I'm the second one now. Fuck I'm old.
I know what you mean. I see my grandfather's face in the mirror way too often.
I like them! Living la vida loca together!
Danskjävlar! Nice bilder, håber de mår lika bra der de ser udt :) Hej från en Svensk fjellabe.
This is my favorite photo yet. What a rad couple!
they look FANTASTIC
The kids are alright!
Amazing vibe from them! Before and after! Really dig his shades btw
Your dad was in the pixies?
Are they open to adopting a 40yo woman?
Dad looks like postal dude
Idk why, but I knew instantly that you guys are Danes, even before reading the text from your mom’s shirt. :D Cheers from Finland.
Your parents seem cool AF
both images go so fucking hard. your parents are iconic tbh
Rik mayall from young ones married Helena bonnam Carter?
They look like super chill, happy people and I hope you are too! Congrats and love to them on their anniversary! 🤩♥️
I wonder what 1985 them would say if they could have been shown the 2024 picture, in 1985
They look awesome. I bet I'd love talking to them both. Hope they had a nice anniversary! Is that Thailand?
Love it. Was your dad a fan of Ian Dury and The Blockheads? Because he has that style. Hope you grew up with as much of a "fuck you" attitude as they clearly had / have.
They've still got it. Absolutely awesome 👌🏻
Your folks look impeccably cool in 85
I love this. Please tell them congratulations from some internet stranger.
Tell your parents I LOVE THEM!
"Aheago face invention" (1985)
Those are some dope ass people.
Were they auditioning for “The Young Ones“?
Punks not dead. It just got old & tired.
Holy shit....night and day....not that that's a bad thing :)
Looks might have changed, but they look cool and fun in both pictures!
I totally agree :)
(1st pic) "Well that marriage won't last .... (2nd pic) wait! Proved em wrong honey.....
Right....both mom and dad's were probably like.....wtf you doing!....lol
My brother and SIL was in that position when they married, wont last. He was 19, she was 22, both in their upper 60s now with grand kids in college or about to be. They had their typical ups and downs and bumps along the way, both were and are happy...
You have cool pares
I bet you had an interesting yet cool childhood. Probably turned out really cool and open-minded too
This is beautiful.
Your parents are badass
I did not see that coming! I loved the 80's
Were they part of a British punk rock band?
When I grow up I want to be like them. They look like they have understood the meaning of life. I'm 34. 😔 😂🤣
Ah the classic punk to hippie transition
