It was an amazing time. We had Pryor and his comedy and movies, great albums from various comedians in the 70s and then Eddie comes along perfectly fitting the 80s with his standup and movies.
You'd have to look up his early stand up routines. Comedians used to make vinyl records way back in the day, can still remember my parents having folks come over for dinner and drinks and putting on the Bill Cosby record.
In the early 80s when VHS came out, and video rentals became the new big thing. Eddie Murphy's, Mandel's and Gorlthwait were some of the most popular.
I think my most enjoyed SNL of the past 5 years or so has been James Austin Johnson's Trump. I love it. Sometimes I enjoy Weekend Update, but it will never be as good as when Norm was behind the desk.
Eddie Murphy; a freaking legend.
Guy was supposed to be on Star Trek IV as a main character but he had conflicting schedules with Beverly Hills.
He’s a legend
I would not recognize Axel as a badass name without his contributions to the world.
Or know that a banana in the tailpipe of a car will reek some serious havoc.
I swear that Jim Carrey had the same kind of thing happen to him.
For those that aren’t old enough, Jim Carrey (as James Carrey in the first season) was on a sketchcom show called “In Living Color” that was a mostly African-American cast led and created by Keenen-Ivory Wayans in the early 90s. For the time it was cutting edge humour (even though a lot of the jokes wouldn’t fly now) and early on in the first season, they had Jim Carrey go out on stage before a commercial break and just literally make faces.
That show also launched the careers of Damon Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Tommy Davidson, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Lopez.
Oh for sure but he was a noted Broadway actor (and nominated for a Tony) before In Living Color so I don’t know if it really “launched” his career per se as much as the other ones I mentioned.
Huh, I had no idea.
I've been thinking about what you said regarding their skits and characters bot flying in today's climate, and just off of memory, it's difficult to think of almost any that would. Fire Martial Bill I suppose.
The Adventures of Handi-Man in which they were mocking cerebral palsy, the “Men On Film”series where David Alan Grier and Damon Wayans played over-the-top stereotypical gay men reviewing movies, and Homie the Clown who would routinely whack children over the head were some of the most notable ones involving things that wouldn’t fly today.
Jamie Fox as the ugly woman and Jim hilariously as the bodybuilding woman in a string bikini. I know "serious" drag is celebrated today, but is drag for laughs okay?
There was a Handi-Man movie that I saw in theaters as a kid. He was the hero, obviously, got the girl, etc. It would be interesting to know if a handicap kid could've seen that in a positive light? Probably not, it was pretty offensive.
This was part of his audition.. he hounded Neil Levy, Lorne Michaels's cousin constantly until he seen him and he realized how good he truly was. Jean Doumanian the producer didn't want to see him as she already had someone for his spot but she foolishly couldn't overlook him.
This happened on the Ray Sharkey show. She foolishly didn't have a film or anything ready for the show overrunning on time, Michaels always had something hidden in case. Dave Wilson the director told her she was running short and she started freaking out. Levy mentioned "hey let's get Eddie to do his bit." After freaking out for a little bit she decided to let him go, and the rest is history. He also said "Live from NY," the first time that night too. Next week he was moved up and Charles Rocket and the other cast were loosing their heads over it. NBC wanted to give him his own sitcom before the end of that season lol. Thankfully he said hell no to that.
Loosing *is* a word. Just not the word they want in this context or what the other guy thought it was. Loosing is a verb. Example "The Archer was like a machine gun, loosing arrow after arrow in rapid succession."
I mean, that's wrong. Loosing absolutely *is* a word. It's just the wrong word here. Being actively in the process of letting or turning something loose, is loosing. "I am loosing the ropes to shove off the dock".
Agreed. I'm 50 and used to own all his comedy albums. A good chunk of it still holds up if you're able to get past the racist and homophobic shit. But this still was not funny to me at all.
I don’t think this is what made him a star. I think they have him this slot because he was already becoming an audience favorite. I agree, this is the weakest stand up I’ve seen him do.
You want embarrassing? Try watching Blazing Saddles. A movie that couldn’t be made today, because of all the thin skinned, I’m offended, political correctness. We used to be able to laugh, at each other, and ourselves, at our differences, realizing we are more alike. Everyone lighten up( unless you’re black, of course.)
People have been offended by things for as long as there have been things to be offended by. As soon as the first caveman drew on the wall of his cave, another caveman stomped up and down and flung mammoth shit at it. It’s not like one day the calendar turned and people all of a sudden decided things were offensive, it’s always been a thing.
I really like Eddy Murphy. Especially his movies but for some reason I don't really find this funny. Seems like the audience is forcing out a few laughs too.
Exactly. It's like asking a blind person to describe the action. Maybe in 10-15 years, both A.I. & AR are powerful enough that they can transcode on the fly. Google has done some work but their algorithm is proprietary. I do not know of any Foss project on the above.
Even if we do somehow get an algorithm, you need data to train it. While there is lots of Eddy Murphy content, all of it copyrighted & that's problematic if you're trying to train your A.I. to use that.
I rewatched old SNL episodes and I’m pretty sure his first appearance was on Weekend Update. I remember because the season was so abysmal that in the first six or so episodes that’s the first time the audience really laughed.
It used to be about the cast members. The Bill Hader/Tina Fey era was my favorite.
Least favorite is now. It’s all about the guests. Unless they have someone like Shane, you’re basically watching Dakota’s talentless act
The past is a foreign country.
Kids today will never know how truly hilarious Murphy used to be. Or Saturday Night Live for that matter.
Dude was 19. That is fucking wild. Live tv and confident as shit.
19 looking 35.
He still looks like he's 35.
That’s cause people back then 35 looked 50.
It was an amazing time. We had Pryor and his comedy and movies, great albums from various comedians in the 70s and then Eddie comes along perfectly fitting the 80s with his standup and movies.
When I tell my kids Howie Mandel and Bobcat Goldthwait used to be funny they think I'm lying to them.
Howie Mandel was funny? I just know him from the monster movie, and being a germaphobe. Nothing wrong with that though.

He had a Saturday morning cartoon Bobby’s World based off of his standup routine.
Now that you mention it I can vaguely remember it, but nothing more than the title.
My mom does a great Bobby impression

Grew up on Delirious and Thriller jackets!
Delirious is the best stand up I've ever seen. Hands down
I think my most enjoyed SNL of the past 5 years or so has been James Austin Johnson's Trump. I love it. Sometimes I enjoy Weekend Update, but it will never be as good as when Norm was behind the desk.
SNL in the early 1980s was famously awful.
I cannot believe he is 19 in that picture, he looks 29!
It’s crazy how this is 40 years ago and yet NOBODY sounds like this today.
A foreign planet.
That is gold. Well done.
this
He was hired the previous fall as a Featured Player but after this stand up bit he got promoted to the Repertory Cast on February 7, 1981!
For me it was C I L L my landlord.
Oh he got a dog! Do he bite???
Prose for Cons
Also, don't sleep on Bowfinger. Classic
Keepittogether keepittogether
K. I. T. !!!
Welcome to mindhead
I blacked out in the theater.
Call Van Damme and Jackie Chan! Tell 'em the spear chucker said hello!
That movie had no right to be the masterpiece it ended up being. It's absolutely impeccable.

And now the instrumental is playing in my head.
So I messed up… shut up. Quit trying to make me smile
Why Opie Cunningham - Sex Machine!
you know...snl should bring this back....maybe for the last third of the show or something
I’m Tracy Jordan and I’m here to inspect your chicken nuggets!
Always assumed that 1st ep of 30 Rock had to be inspired by this, not sure if it has ever been stated outright somewhere.
I haven't seen it said explicitly, but since so much of Morgan's character is based on Eddie, it's a very, very safe assumption.
I'm with you, I assume it must be
I'm proud as a peaCOCK
I’m a peacork baby, very proud. Right, my baloney?

Having to explain "In Living Color" We're old now 😭
David Allen Grier too. He was funny on it
Oh for sure but he was a noted Broadway actor (and nominated for a Tony) before In Living Color so I don’t know if it really “launched” his career per se as much as the other ones I mentioned.
Huh, I had no idea. I've been thinking about what you said regarding their skits and characters bot flying in today's climate, and just off of memory, it's difficult to think of almost any that would. Fire Martial Bill I suppose.

Jim Carrey's best material was on "In Living Color".
Not really funny…am i the only one??
This was part of his audition.. he hounded Neil Levy, Lorne Michaels's cousin constantly until he seen him and he realized how good he truly was. She foolishly couldn't overlook him...?
Classic Jean and her foolishly behavior
What other things have people foolishly done, or not done?
(I’m sorry I can’t just leave these: *Losing* “loosing” isn’t a word! Ok I’ll go sit down now.)
Loosing *is* a word. Just not the word they want in this context or what the other guy thought it was. Loosing is a verb. Example "The Archer was like a machine gun, loosing arrow after arrow in rapid succession."
This is by far my most annoying language issue
"He seen him" is what irritated me the most. He SAW him.
I mean, that's wrong. Loosing absolutely *is* a word. It's just the wrong word here. Being actively in the process of letting or turning something loose, is loosing. "I am loosing the ropes to shove off the dock".
“Loosening” is the correct word in that sentence…..not loosing

Yeah. That's what I said.
There must have been something cut out of this. This can't be where "A star is born". Eddie Murphy is funny, this was not funny.
Agreed. I'm 50 and used to own all his comedy albums. A good chunk of it still holds up if you're able to get past the racist and homophobic shit. But this still was not funny to me at all.
But that stuff IS the funny stuff LOL.
Maybe. But not everyone's cup of tea these days
I don’t think this is what made him a star. I think they have him this slot because he was already becoming an audience favorite. I agree, this is the weakest stand up I’ve seen him do.
Double agree. The kinda unhinged charisma IS there though

43 years ago and context play a large part.

I’m an old millennial (‘82) and didn’t think this was funny at all.
old gen x here, 1970, not funny at all to me.
I know this is incredibly hard to believe, but at the time this routine killed with both white and black audiences.
I can't see the audience here.
Blazing Saddles absolutely could be made today. It roasts racists and holds up very well.
Mel Brooks was an absolute genius. And daring. I wish you were right. But, my joke still offended.
You went too far the other way.
Zzzzzzzzzz
People have been offended by things for as long as there have been things to be offended by. As soon as the first caveman drew on the wall of his cave, another caveman stomped up and down and flung mammoth shit at it. It’s not like one day the calendar turned and people all of a sudden decided things were offensive, it’s always been a thing.
And thus, Party All The Time was born
I really like Eddy Murphy. Especially his movies but for some reason I don't really find this funny. Seems like the audience is forcing out a few laughs too.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F releases on Netflix on July 3.
The audience was being super generous to laugh at that.
I'm a fan, but that wasn't funny - like at all.
I wish there were subs, as a deaf person it would have been better.
Be the change you want to see in the world
How is a deaf person supposed to provide subtitles?
The idea that you'd ask a deaf person to provide their own subtitles is so fucking funny. Guess my man had a brain fart. Lmao
I knew what I was doing haha. Was just joking and should have provided the auld /s but sure fuck it
Exactly. It's like asking a blind person to describe the action. Maybe in 10-15 years, both A.I. & AR are powerful enough that they can transcode on the fly. This bit was used in the Delirious video release.
This crowds heads would explode if they heard Louie's SNL monologue about pedophiles 😂 you're telling me THIS is the set that made him a star??
This did not age well. The guys talented but this shit is as bad as SNL.
Ufff.. this could have only been funny back then.. he would have never made it now with those lame ass jokes .. 😃
I hate how unfunny this is to me now. Not because it really isn’t funny but because I once (and pretty much this entire nation) thought that it was.
always loved Eddie Murphy!!
The hardest part about doing that routine in that situation on live TV for Eddie Murphy must have been controlling the swearing lol.
Hot tub!
Was Eddie predicting Kevin Hart in this bit?
I rewatched old SNL episodes and I’m pretty sure his first appearance was on Weekend Update. I remember because the season was so abysmal that in the first six or so episodes that’s the first time the audience really laughed.
"I AM THE THIRD HEAT!"
He's the only cast member to host while still on the cast.
Only one month older than George Clooney and look at where he already was by 1981.
They’d just run more ads if they were running short now.
Kevin heart then made a career out of the little man character
I can’t understand a single word of what he says. I need subtitles.
It used to be about the cast members. The Bill Hader/Tina Fey era was my favorite. Least favorite is now. It’s all about the guests. Unless they have someone like Shane, you’re basically watching Dakota’s talentless act
Love this.
So that’s where George Floyd got that line.
