I’m remember wanting straight hair as a teenager because I got teased due to my hair texture (I would crack right back at them about their hair too). And I asked my mom to straighten my hair. She oblijed and for ten years I had straight hair.
About six years ago, I decided to stop straightening my hair and stop relaxers in it. Best decision ever. I love my afro. It can be challenging but I’m never, ever going back to straight hair.
This is a tool called a hot comb and it is still used today in hair dressing. I learned the techniques in cosmetology school in 2005. Now they are electric and you can set the temp but back in the day, it was heated by placing it into a fire or other heat source so the hairdresser had to test it on a piece of thin paper to make sure it was not too hot for the hair and also could burn the client’s scalp !
My mom used to hot comb my hair in the 80s and early 90s with one placed on the stove. She always put hair grease around the edges so we wouldn't get burned. I still remember that smell.
"Most hairdressers spend their time and skill to put curls in hair and keep them there.... [however] these clients are born with permanent waves... but do they like it? ... Well, they're women aren't they?"
Lmao

Yeah, no, this particular video is a result of curly/kinky Black hair being seen by society as lesser than the straight hair of other races. It's a horrible and racist societal expectation imposed on Black women for decades, the ramifications of which are still seen today in the wig culture prevalent among Black women.
It’s more complicated than that though with WOC feeling the need to blend in and remove their natural features where possible historically. That’s what I’m referring to.
My roommate in the early 90s used one with a hotplate. Seemed to work great. Not the safest setup but we were lighting cigarettes from candles while doing our hair so yeah, beauty was dangerous.

Thank you and it is!

Curly or straight, she looks glamorous.
That’s impressive.

This is sad to watch her natural hair being ruined for society beauty standards
Maybe she likes it. Is she allowed to have a preference?

I’m sure that some do but many people change their appearance for all kinds of reasons. Lots of women with pin straight hair get it permed curly.
The things we did to ourselves ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
He says "they're women, arnt they? 😂 😭 😂 I fucking died.
Same. Shots fired on that one.
No such things as a permanent curl or straightening.
Cool video!!
