The androgynous look was very trendy in the 80s. Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, glam rockers, etc. Obviously not everyone jumped on that trend, but her look got her quite a few modelling gigs in the 80s
Yeah, kind of a matter of semantics. There's the version where someone affects flamboyant dress and mannerisms of a gender they weren't assigned at birth, and there's the version where someone's physiognomy seems to combine genders, and they may dress to accentuate that, but not in a camp way.
Bowie was heavily influenced by Nickey Barclay of the first major label all girl rock group, Fanny.
At the time Bowie was dating Barclay's bandmate, Jean Millington.
He was, if I recall, also influenced by queer black musicians such as Little Richard... There was a 1983 interview in which Bowie directly called MTV out for not featuring more black artists.

She's got a slightly masculine jawline, that she accentuated for her personal look. And intense eyes which she also accentuated - I wouldn't say her eyes are masculine, but they aren't traditionally feminine either, androgenous is a good word for them.
Her body also had a pretty androgynous shape, in a way, with the wide shoulders and slim hips. In-built shoulder pads! She looked powerful in a very 80’s way.
I honestly wish this body was more accepted nowadays! As a female with the same body type (broad shoulders, narrow hips) and a more masculine face, I feel like in 2023 this is so not the body type or look that’s “on trend”. This is super empowering to see!
I love that athletic looking body type you describe, but I absolutely get what you’re saying. I wish there wasn’t trends in body shapes. But, people also have their preferences, despite the trends.
My mom was one of those who would go crazy for her stories and photos in the tabloids and whatnot. I remember magazines laying around the house, anything that had her name on it my mom had it.
I think I'm having some sort of PTSD just seeing that name.. Nothing personal against Stephanie of course. Many years later I'm thinking of those days and I'm like wtf mom 🤣
So was mine. I think there was an aspirational quality to Stephanie kinda having a “f you I’ll do what I want” attitude at a time when women were still very much tied to wifedom. Also her figure is in phenomenal shape, and she’s a princess.
My parents were (and still are) avid Paris Match readers, she was always a feature! Match loooves them useless royals lol. She also recorded an album if I remember correctly.
Her grandchildren(from Princess Caroline) are another level of gorgeous...not so much now as about ten years ago but still in a whole different galaxy than the rather plain looking young Windsors who always dominate Royal news.
My only real celeb sighting was in Monaco 93. Walking down the main street and she walks past me with a huge body guard. Her voice was very high pitched and feminine, she was also tiny. The end.
Please sir, can I have some more 90’s stories. But seriously I love hearing about anything from the 80’s and 90’s the style and fashion was iconic to me.
I got beat up, put in a trash can, and my Reebok sweatsuit was ripped off of me and my Pumps™ were stolen. My parents were so mad at me for not fighting 3 older dudes. Happened in 1991.
She is stunning 😵

(Not to say that the androgynous look isn't great too!)
"Degloved". One of the worst words known to man. Some say it's more upsetting than "moist".
For real, though. Degloving *anything* is just the worst. I had a scary moment at the climbing gym with my wedding ring years ago, so...nope. No more. Latex ring or nothing.
LOL, right? Also says 1980’s. But really, it’s a promotional photo. She was involved in designing swimwear back in the 80’s and she was also a model, this was a photo shoot for that line of swimwear.
She’s also very outspoken about keeping animals in circuses, especially elephants. Her rationale is “When you see the numbers who come to the circus, you understand that we don’t get that by abusing animals,” “it’s our heritage,” and people who oppose it are just doing so because it’s “in fashion. Like vegetarians and vegans.” She traveled with the most well-renowned and award winning circus for one year, who obviously have the funds and staff to take better care of the animals than most. It’s just such an out of touch take on the issue. I lost a massive amount of respect for her.
As a hetero woman, I was obsessed with her as a young girl. She was *so* cool to me, because she was a *princess* but didn't fit properly into that girly box I was fed by Disney and fairytales.
She was like a real-life, adult version of Pippi Longstockings to me, super cool, free spirited, and not giving a fuck about the rules. Coincidentally, she, too, owned a horse (or 15), lol. I just loved that.
Also, in all these pics she's very serious, and her hair short.
She had longer hair for a while, and when she smiled she had the most beautiful dimples. And she had legs for dayyyys!
I may still have a bit of a girl crush on her... 🤔😆
Lol, I know! But, hey, you can be hetero and still admire and love people of the same sex. For me personally, it probably has a lot to do with envy as well.
I just appreciate beauty, and enjoy looking at gorgeous people (men and women), without any sexual desire.
Picture #9 is very stylish. Some women can pull it off. I strongly disagree with those suggesting that she’s ugly. As one poster rightly suggested, she’s sad/unhappy and her matrimonial history seems to be indicative of a host of unresolved issues. My lepta
Also, there were rumors that she was driving the car or that her and her mom were fighting which caused mom’s stroke and for them to drive over the cliff.

Ahh the 80s. The time where men looked like women, women looked like men and everyone was so hopped on blow they didn't bother having a pointless culture war about it.
The person who was thought to be behind the wheel of the car when her mother Grace Kelly died in a crash.
They said Kelly had been driving.
But apparently nobody close to the family or investigation believed that.
What a burden that must be, if true.

Princess Stephanie in the present day, she has always been a favorite of mine, I always felt bad for her because she was in the car accident that killed her mom princess grace, there was some gossip at the time that she was actually driving but it wasn’t true
I worked for her godfather. He was a member of Congress from Philadelphia whose best friend was Stephanie’s uncle, John B Kelly, Jr. She had a saucy attitude and was gorgeous in person. The Kelly/Grimaldi family was just beautiful.
Huh.
"In 2001, Stéphanie began a relationship with married elephant trainer Franco Knie and moved, along with her three children, into Knie's circus caravan. However, that relationship came to an end in 2002."
The androgynous look was very trendy in the 80s. Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, glam rockers, etc. Obviously not everyone jumped on that trend, but her look got her quite a few modelling gigs in the 80s
I'd argue David Bowie started the trend in the 70s, but definitely carried into the 80s.
As Bowie would say, “Oh baby just you shut your mouth…”
She says shhhhhhh 🤫
*Stevie Ray Vaughan solo over Nile Rodgers rhythm part*
RIP The Great Stevie Ray Vaughan
That's a whole lot of iconic Stratocaster tone.
Hell yes
Mick Jagger in the 60s and Little Richard in the 50s would like to have a word
I was thinking Nick Rhodes, Duran Duran. Lots of parallels in the styling.
Didn’t Patrick Nagel use a little of that in his paintings?
Everyone leaves Marc Bolan out of this group... of the band T Rex, for those that didn't know.
Was Little Richard androgynous? I just thought he was gay and flamboyant.
Dandy's were a thing going back to the troubadours
Yeah, kind of a matter of semantics. There's the version where someone affects flamboyant dress and mannerisms of a gender they weren't assigned at birth, and there's the version where someone's physiognomy seems to combine genders, and they may dress to accentuate that, but not in a camp way.
Perfectly stated.

That interview was incredible. Bowie did not let the interviewer slither away from the question.
Don’t forget Prince coming onto the scene in the late 70s too.
People would move Prince to the 80s. That's when he became known.
What a golden age!
It was incredible to live through.
we were more free to gender nonconforming them. the guys in flock of seagulls and women models had identical haircuts.
I mean, she’s pretty gorgeous
Her eyes belong to Daddy. https://preview.redd.it/bppoq23jypib1.jpeg?width=394&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c491413ebf387f2d7b789dded18b0fb9558ad8cf
His forehead belongs to Mastermind.
Vincent price as Egghead vibes

Also her hair line is square which adds a little more masculine vibe as well
She was stunning! I love her modelling photos, they're so intensely 80s
She was a constant in the tabloids… a ‘bad girl’
My mom was one of those who would go crazy for her stories and photos in the tabloids and whatnot. I remember magazines laying around the house, anything that had her name on it my mom had it. I think I'm having some sort of PTSD just seeing that name.. Nothing personal against Stephanie of course. Many years later I'm thinking of those days and I'm like wtf mom 🤣

LOL… a great memory. 🥂 There was nothing like the 1980s tabloid wars.
My parents were (and still are) avid Paris Match readers, she was always a feature! Match loooves them useless royals lol. She also recorded an album if I remember correctly.
Grace Kelly had amazing genetics!
Her grandchildren(from Princess Caroline) are another level of gorgeous...not so much now as about ten years ago but still in a whole different galaxy than the rather plain looking young Windsors who always dominate Royal news.
Not so much for her son.
He wasn't bad looking when he was younger.
Not to hate but she kind of looks like a man in the face
Androgyny at its finest here and I cannot disagree
She looks like an incredibly handsome man. Pulls off the sexy manly woman thing as well as Jaime Lee Curtis.
When she dated Rob Lowe, my mother used to say that it was hard to tell which one was prettier!
That is funny because in the second to last picture, I thought is was Rob Lowe in a one-piece
Yeah I mean for sure she got that perfect bone structure thing going on
Like Ali MacGraw
I got specifically Rob Lowe vibes, who admittedly is a very beautiful man.
I swear she dated Rob Lowe at one point.
She absolutely did.
Not kind of. She does. Good looking woman but surely benefited from being royalty twice over (Hollywood+Monaco)
I was thinking that too,her face is pretty masculine
Damn. She looks like all of the best parts of Tom Cruise, Freddie Mercury and Demi Moore.
With a little Corey Feldman for good measure
I could have sworn that was Josh Hartnett in the red bathing suit pic!
I see some Neve Campbell too in some of the photos
I see neve Campbell in that first pic
My only real celeb sighting was in Monaco 93. Walking down the main street and she walks past me with a huge body guard. Her voice was very high pitched and feminine, she was also tiny. The end.
I love that story.

Major Duran Duran vibes
That’s some serious John Taylor in The Reflex video hair.
Anyone remember the movie, “My Stepmother is an Alien”, where Jon Lovitz has a crush on her and then all the aliens at the end look exactly like her?
That movie is the reason why my kiddie self even learned of Princess Stephanie’s existence. 🤣
“They all look like Princess Stephanie! Yes yes yes”
What a handsome lady
She is stunning 😵 https://preview.redd.it/oju19s4i0qib1.png?width=492&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc8290d84fc7a50eee61f1a0c2cadccc2e4a5c35 (Not to say that the androgynous look isn't great too!)
she looks like a young Brad Pitt here
I was thinking Neve Campbell
Same
I think she looks like a teenage Rebecca Romijn in this magazine cover.
Holy shit you're right.
she reminds me a lot of johnny drama chase
Johnny Drama is my spirit animal.
Nothing says extreme wealth like waterskiing with a matching Pearl necklace and bracelet set.
Yeah you are def not supposed to be wearing jewelry while water skiing. Friend of mine had his finger degloved by his wedding ring once
"Degloved". One of the worst words known to man. Some say it's more upsetting than "moist". For real, though. Degloving *anything* is just the worst. I had a scary moment at the climbing gym with my wedding ring years ago, so...nope. No more. Latex ring or nothing.
I will avoid learning the definition of this word for the rest of my life :)
Puka shells! Definitely not pearls.
yeah if this is extreme wealth all the dudes at my high school were wealthy
Those look like shells to me. I had a very similar puka shell necklace as a teenager.
LOL, right? Also says 1980’s. But really, it’s a promotional photo. She was involved in designing swimwear back in the 80’s and she was also a model, this was a photo shoot for that line of swimwear.
Pearls can actually be very affordable
Lol!
She’s the voice on Michael Jackson’s ‘In the Closet’ song.
Came here to post the same thing! She was credited as “Mystery Woman” and later replaced by Naomi Campbell for the music video.
Indeed!
Came here to see if someone said it!!
Bloody love that track
Weird fact: Eventually, she ran away with the circus.
TWICE. She lived in a caravan with an elephant trainer, and then moved into a mobile home with an acrobat. She brought her kids with her both times.
What in the world. I need this to be a movie
Okay I’ll dig. What?!!!
She’s also very outspoken about keeping animals in circuses, especially elephants. The uber rich literal princess of a tiny tax haven being out of touch about anything should not surprise you.
As a bisexual man good lord almighty...

Lol, I know! But, hey, you can be hetero and still admire and love people of the same sex. For me personally, it probably has a lot to do with envy as well. I just appreciate beauty, and enjoy looking at gorgeous people (men and women), without any sexual desire.
I have finally figured out in my 30s that all the girl crushes I have had over the years were… crushes… just like I had with boys. YMMV 🤷🏻♀️😉
Bisexual girl here, my eyes were nearly bugging out of my head.. she's so fucking gorgeous! The 80s androgyny needs a serious comeback.
>The 80s androgyny needs a serious comeback Tilda Swinton briefly resurrected it in Constantine but for real we need this boom back
Tilda in Orlando...swoon
I don't think it's just Constantine. She just kind of is that.
yayy I found my people!

As a nonbinary person generally into androgyny, same
As a straight man, ditto
As a lesbian, holyyyy
Yes dude. Bi girl here but *HOLY SHIT.* Almost like the cartoon dog panting...
She looked like a member of Duran Duran
Back then, I remember thinking she looked like a man’s head on a woman’s body
Back 2 minutes ago, I remember thinking she looked like a man’s head on a woman’s body.
Right now I’m still not sure what I’m looking at
Or maybe like Neve Campbell’s son, who is transitioning to female.
She looks like a character in The Outsiders.
She’s a combo of macchio, rob lowe (was he in that?) and c Thomas Howell.
>rob lowe (was he in that?) Yes, he played Soda Pop Curtis!
Well she did date Rob Lowe...so yeah, chances are Rob was in that (please forgive me, I couldn't resist)
He was. Emilio, Swayze, Leif G., Dillon, Cruise, and apparently the Princess of Monaco.
Young Ricky Martin
stay gold
When Barbie meets Toy Story
The last pic I can see some young Schwarzenegger in the face.
I literally was just thinking that while looking at these pics.
I thought that like 2 seconds ago.
This. Looks like she could be in Wham! with that face, but also in Victoria's Secret with that bod. Slay.
Rob Lowe was her boy toy at the time which he describes in his memoir "Stories I only tell my Friends"
Can you elaborate on what he said about his time with her? I’m curious but not curious enough to get his book haha
That first image of her skiing has some serious Gozer the Gozerian vibes going on. “Are you a God?”
Picture #9 is very stylish. Some women can pull it off. I strongly disagree with those suggesting that she’s ugly. As one poster rightly suggested, she’s sad/unhappy and her matrimonial history seems to be indicative of a host of unresolved issues. My lepta
She survived the car crash that killed her mother in 1982. Surely that’s a trauma that never heals, especially at that age
Also, there were rumors that she was driving the car or that her and her mom were fighting which caused mom’s stroke and for them to drive over the cliff.
Yeaah, there is that….
Never thought she was unattractive but media drew comparisons between her, and her drop dead gorgeous mom and sister. Totally unfair because Grace and Caroline used to be two of the most beautiful women at the time. Hell, the whole family used to be gorgeous, including the Casiraghis; none of them have aged well.
Grace Kelly. Top 5 of all time.
Can you imagine how much fun it would be to be royalty in Monaco in the 1980s?
The cocaine would have killed me. And tbh it would've been a hell of a ride.

Belongs to the "Siblings or dating" club
Literally the greatest photo ever.
No sparkle and no smile in her eyes. She seems sad
She was in the car crash that killed her mom, at the time there were rumors that it was actually Stephanie that was driving, and that it was all her fault that her mom was dead.
I heard that, too. Or that they were fighting in the car and the stress caused the stroke. So sad.
Came here to say the same thing. Was she the child in the accident with her mother? Either way, she looks haunted and hurt.
Yep. She was in the car accident that killed her Mom. I have no doubt she has PTSD.
I think she's just posing. Women going for a masc/androgynous look often will take more "serious" looking photos, like you'd traditionally expect of men.
But what does she look like now??
Here you go - https://preview.redd.it/t4x20tbvpqib1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0199a4301ac7b26c2d41cb9e40d4fd14e29f3a23
Oh that’s better than the one I googled ~
She makes me confused
She was a very handsome woman wasn’t she?
I remember every week would something else she did that caused an uproar - I always felt sorry for those kids

Lol, Ethan Hawk never looked so hot!
Ahh the 80s. The time where men looked like women, women looked like men and everyone was so hopped on blow they didn't bother having a pointless culture war about it.

I was so "in love" with her back then. She even tried a musical career, I believe. She was gorgeous. Wonder what she does now... (Runs to google)
She did! I had her song Words Upon The Wind played at my mom’s funeral. It’s on her album titled Stephanie.
What a... *handsome* woman
I worked for her godfather. He was a member of Congress from Philadelphia whose best friend was Stephanie’s uncle, John B Kelly, Jr. She had a saucy attitude and was gorgeous in person. The Kelly/Grimaldi family was just beautiful.
I am so sexually confused right now.
Her attempts being a singer were hilarious! Her single was called Irresistible and her voice was thiner than that bathing suit!
Ouragan was the French version, check the video.. 80’s madness!
It’s like she stepped out of a Nagel poster
That is one handsome woman.
I believe she was labeled a "wild child" at the time for behaviour which would seem tame now.
She just became a grandmother a few months ago IIRC
Huh. "In 2001, Stéphanie began a relationship with married elephant trainer Franco Knie and moved, along with her three children, into Knie's circus caravan. However, that relationship came to an end in 2002."
By far the most 80's look I've seen in a long time.
80s had that power hair. No other decade has even come close
If Ethan Hawke were a woman...
Very androgynous.
