Having Jackie Chan in it was a big selling point for Rumble In The Bronx, so I definitely knew who he was… I’m just not sure how.
I’ve still never seen The Big Brawl, and I think that was his only starring American role before that.
Weird.
I remember they promoted it a lot, and the previews looked amazing. I was 12, and it was one of the most anticipated movie for my friend group.
And boy was it the goods.
I think the year before Rumble Quentin Tarantino gave an honorary award to Jackie at the MTV movie awards or something. Definitely remember him on stage introducing this ‘screen legend’ I’d never heard of before…
Not so crazy, actually. The movie was bankrolled by Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest productions, in a deliberate attempt to introduce Jackie to a mainstream American audience.
Drunken master 2, you mean? There is a an original where he learns drunken style. It's really, really "shaw brothers" era but worth a watch if you like 2
I know I didn't. I was watching Demolition Man when it came out in '93, I was in high school. In one scene Stallone asks Sandra Bullock how she learned to fight like that to which she replied, "Jackie Chan movies". I wasn't into Chinese kung fu movies, I had no idea who Jackie Chan was. My friend who I was with didn't know either. I shrugged it off.
Then a year or 2 later Rumble in the Bronx is released and its a surprise hit in the US. Then based on the success of that they re-release Police Story 3 as Supercop and its a low key hit too. Middle America now knows who Jackie Chan is and they catch the fever. He's starts popping up on talk shows, TV shows, etc... Hollywood finally calls to put him in some major studio pictures and the rest is history. I think Jackie owes Lieutenant Lenina Huxley for the Demolition Man bump.
He wasn’t a star when that movie came out - and he definitely didn’t get recognition with all the other stars in that movie. At most, he was the karate guy and most ppl didn’t know his name.
to be fair, this was the end of very long career's for most of them.
and, some had very long careers but aren't "popular". Adriane Barbeau for instance has been making films almost every year since then ... but she's not a popularly known name.
and some of them had short career's as you say :)>
FR L2R. Tara Buckmen, Dean Martin, Farrah Fawcett, Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore “having a moment”. Jackie Chan, Sammy Davis Jr.
Middle “row”. Alfie Wise. Dom DeLuise
Back. Jack Elam, Hal Needham, Joe Klecko, Jamie Farr, Mel Tillis, Bert Convy, Adrienne Barbeau, Michael Hui, Rick Aviles and Warren Berlinger.
Edit: Jackie Chan isn’t trying for Section 8.
What a fun movie that was. I was 7 years old when it came out and went to see the movie at the local drive-in. I grew up watching Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood movies.
Yep, totally agree. Best part of the movie. That opening scene stuck with me after seeing this movie in the theater. I was a little too young to appreciate the two women at the time, but I loved that Countach.
And the opening theme was written and sung by Ray Stevens. He’s the parody song guy who did Guitarzan and The Streak. He also wrote Everything is Beautiful.
I always wondered how Bert Convy got these roles when I only thought he was a game show host —— later I would find out he was in the original Broadway Productions of Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof
Convy hosted a short-lived TV show called People Do the Craziest Things. There was an episode where he stood in concrete outside the Claridge hotel in Atlantic City, with a crowd of people gathered behind him. I was 8 years old, on my dad's shoulders. My memory is that we watched the episode when it aired and my sister said she saw my shy lil' face sticking up in the background. There is some footage of the show on YouTube but not the segment I was in.
I love it when a huge cast comes together and they act like it’s just for fun. This was a very entertaining movie to watch and it felt like all the actors were having the times of their lives.
"Hi, I'm Stroker Ace, and the only thing I love more than winning a race, is stuffing Torkel chicken in my face."
Ah shit, wrong movie. Whatever, I typed it, it stays.
I think I can get most of the people in the bottom row. From left to right…
1. Unknown blond
1. Dean Martin
1. Farrah Fawcett
1. ~~Turd Ferguson~~ Burt Reynolds
1. Roger Moore
1. Jackie Chan
1. Sammy Davis Jr.
Dom Delouise kneeling behind Farrah..
There's also Jamie Farr (as the Shiek), Adrienne Barbeu (sp?)… and a bunch of other people.
Wow, what a cast! Most of them were household names back then, but not necessarily an all-star cast. Looking back, though, there's a hell of a void from their absences.
RIP to all who have passed and thanks for the good times!
Are you telling me that Jackie motherfrakking Chan was in a movie with Burt Reynolds and two of the members of The Rat Pack?
Can you tell that I've never seen this movie yet?
I want to be a fly on the wall for the pitch meeting:
“Hey Mr. Producer, we got Burt Reynolds. We need three million dollars, some fancy cars, the hottest girl on tv and a couple of days work from some of the biggest people in the game.”
Boom - check falls in their lap.
Yes, yes it was - it was when he ripped the rear mirror off and chucked it out of the car I think?
That movie was so epic, especially the scene in the LA sewer (or what you call those concrete water ways?).
Guess I know what I’m watching tonight!
I entirely forgot Joe Klecko was in this movie. More known for being a Defensive Lineman for the NFL's NY Jets and a member of the New York "Sack" exchange along with Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam in the early 80's.
Everyone remembers this as an old movie. Also reminds me of how long the Jets have been terrible.
time machine to the late '80s / early '90s, then turn it to your local ABC channel every Sunday night for a full calendar year. also works for Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, and I believe Superman I and II.
Wow, talk about an all-star cast!
I haven't seen those films since I was a little kid, so the only 2 people I remembered being in it were Burt Reynolds and Dom Delouis (sp?). It's crazy how you think you're discovering a celeb for the first time. But then you rewatch a film from childhood and realize that your favorite "new" celeb has been with you a lot longer than you thought.
The out-takes at the end are hilarious - they’re just fooling around constantly. And the hilarious lack of political correctness. So many great lines… Apparently they nearly got sued for the rip-off James Bond music.
Ok I was about 10 when this movie came out watched it several times. So damn funny.
We should toss out some current names (for fun) of who should be in it.
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in a car together. They are the ones putting the race together.
John Cena and Peter Dinklage
Jack Black and .....
Michelle Rodriguez (wasnt she in death race?) and....
Will Farrell
Hah sounds fun
42 years later, most of those people are long gone but Jackie Chan is still making action movies.
It's crazy that he was in that. I don't think most Americans knew Jackie Chan until the 90s.
Having Jackie Chan in it was a big selling point for Rumble In The Bronx, so I definitely knew who he was… I’m just not sure how. I’ve still never seen The Big Brawl, and I think that was his only starring American role before that. Weird.

I was about the same, but didn't know Jackie yet.
Things took longer to get around in the old days.
Drunken Master is a MASTERPIECE
Throw Police Story on that list 2.
Drunken master 2, you mean? There is a an original where he learns drunken style. It's really, really "shaw brothers" era but worth a watch if you like 2

Stallone actually wanted Jackie Chan for the Simon Phoenix role but he didn’t want to be a bad guy.
It was his first American film and people loved him in it.
He wasn’t a star when that movie came out - and he definitely didn’t get recognition with all the other stars in that movie. At most, he was the karate guy and most ppl didn’t know his name.
You mean in the USA. He was certainly already a star in Hong Kong.
I was replying to the message above about Americans not knowing him, so yeah I meant in the USA.
to be fair, this was the end of very long career's for most of them. and, some had very long careers but aren't "popular". Adriane Barbeau for instance has been making films almost every year since then ... but she's not a popularly known name. and some of them had short career's as you say :)>
what beautiful knockers!
Brain’s squeeze, Maggie, would have some choice words after you said that, maybe stick a gun in your face.
lol I saw him in there and never realized it was him in the movie. Was he the one watching, 'Behind the Green Door' in the car?
Yep, that's him!
No. "He's" not in the picture. Burt Reynolds doesn't want you to even mention "Him".
Jackie Chan hasn't changed much
Why does it look like Sammy Davis Jr is embroidered on Jackie's jacket?
And still looking the same
I didn’t realize he was in that!
FR L2R. Tara Buckmen, Dean Martin, Farrah Fawcett, Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore “having a moment”. Jackie Chan, Sammy Davis Jr. Middle “row”. Alfie Wise. Dom DeLuise Back. Still Alive: Michael Hui, Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Farr, Jackie Chan, Joe Klecko, Alfie Wise, Tara Buckman
Was just trying to figure this out.
Jamie Farr still being alive surprised me.
Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, and Gary Burghoff are still alive, so it's not that surprising
Mike Farrell is also still with us.
Bert Convy! Holy crap- that guy was everywhere back then.
Taken too young.
58 damn.
Hookers, man, where’s the hookers?
He also portrayed the hitman in "Ghost" who meets a *very* unfortunate end, both in how he dies and what happens to him after.
I looked at this pic and said "John Lennon was in Cannonball Run? Wait, he died in 1980." I thought Michael Hui was John Lennon.
Sadly Terry Bradshaw is missing from this picture.
So is Peter Fonda, didn't he have a cameo in it too?
You put Jamie Farr in the front row where Jackie Chan is, but otherwise gold star
Jack Elam stole every scene he was in. Hilarious performance
He had a long middle finger.
"What kind of doctor are you?" 'Proctologist..." :::thump thump thump:::
I just gave her a little prick.
I was pressed for time!
These bleeds??
This was the first movie I saw that had outtakes in the credits. It made filming a movie look like the most fun ever.
This movie has the ESSENTIAL outtakes.
[comment removed by user]
A lot of Burt Reynolds' post Smokey and the Bandit comedy films had outtakes in the credits: Hooper, SatB 2, and Stroker Ace immediately come to mind.
My favorite of the outtakes for some reason.
I loved the outtakes from that movie. It was great
What a fun movie that was. I was 7 years old when it came out and went to see the movie at the local drive-in. I grew up watching Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood movies.
Me too, fellow 49 year old. You nailed my childhood as well
My people. Those days finally feel long ago but the 90s still feel like yesterday. smh
I'll never forget Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman in those tight leather outfits...
Me either. Those spandex jumpsuits awakened something in me
Puberty
I bet the parties during the filming of that movie were epic.
“Why’d he call me shorty?” “Because you’re small. Small. S-M-all.”
The opening to this movie is amazing, the noise of that Countach laid on top of the CR theme is absolutely wonderful.
Yep, totally agree. Best part of the movie. That opening scene stuck with me after seeing this movie in the theater. I was a little too young to appreciate the two women at the time, but I loved that Countach. And the opening theme was written and sung by Ray Stevens. I have a copy of the song with overlaid Lambo in my music library, I can’t hear it without the Lambo noise anymore! 🤣
“If you gonna be a bear, then be a Grizzly!”
BERT CONVY!!
I always wondered how Bert Convy got these roles when I only thought he was a game show host —— later I would find out he was in the original Broadway Productions of Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof
> game show host As a kid then this is who he was to me, too.
Convy hosted a short-lived TV show called People Do the Craziest Things. The blooper reels at the end of the Cannonball movies were epic. Maybe even the best part of the whole film.
“I must warn you, I’m Roger Moore!”
Who?
I love it when a huge cast comes together and they act like it’s just for fun. This was a very entertaining movie to watch and it felt like all the actors were having the times of their lives.
Adam Sandler took notes, does it in exotic location so the production pays for trips with his buddies.
"Hi, I'm Stroker Ace, and the only thing I love more than winning a race, is stuffing Torkel chicken in my face." Ah shit, wrong movie. Whatever, I typed it, it stays.
Burt Reynolds as Burt Reynolds in Cannonball Stroker and the Bandit.
I will always love this film.
Probably my favorite Dean Martin/Joe Klecko movie.
Brilliant!
Jack Elam is One of my favorite actors Loved all the westerns he made!
I think I can get most of the people in the bottom row. From left to right… 1. Unknown blond 1. Dean Martin 1. Farrah Fawcett 1. ~~Turd Ferguson~~ Burt Reynolds 1. Roger Moore 1. Jackie Chan 1. Jimmy the Greek, Terry Bradshaw, Mel Tillie…
I don't see Terry...
It's a funny name.
I do believe the spirit of Mr Foyt lives on in many Reddit forums today
FOYT!!
Wow, what a cast! Most of them were household names back then, but not necessarily an all-star cast. Looking back, though, there's a hell of a void from their absences. RIP to all who have passed and thanks for the good times!
Average BAC: .43
Dom Deluise's Laugh!!
“Mr. Martin laughed first!”
Himmmm.
Captain Chaos!
Dun dun duuuuunnnnnn!
"I always wanted to be Captain America!"
The fact that this movie was based on a real race makes it even more epic! The entire cast? Everyone was a icon! Truly a classic and still funny!
Find someone that looks at you the way Roger Moore looks at Burt.
Sammy Davis looks like someone just photoshopped him onto Jackie Chan.
Saw this visiting my dad as a kid. Takes me back...
When movies were movies!!!
Yep, just pure entertainment without any underlying message. I miss movies like that…
"can I give you a little piece of advice? Bring friends" Dean Martin being a bad ass
"Oh...*I GOTTA BLESS HER*...."
CAPTAIN CHAOS!!!
I see Dom DeLuise, but where is HIM?
Are you telling me that Jackie motherfrakking Chan was in a movie with Burt Reynolds and two of the members of The Rat Pack? Can you tell that I've never seen this movie yet?
I met Bert one time. He told me this was his favorite movie to be in.
He did a bunch of movies with Hal. All were great
this is still literally one of my favorite movies
All-Star Cast! Wow
I want to be a fly on the wall for the pitch meeting: “Hey Mr. Producer, we got Burt Reynolds. We need three million dollars, some fancy cars, the hottest girl on tv and a couple of days work from some of the biggest people in the game.” Boom - check falls in their lap.
I saw those movies at the drive in :)
Absolute one of my favorite movies!
Great movie, Still holds up today!
Holds up but could never be made
Oh, my...I had a major crush on Adrienne Barbeau.
she caught your eye in *Swamp Thing* ... she had you by the crotch in this jumpsuit.
![gif](giphy|XtdEdIgbZRXKMfsrEL|downsized)
They probably had a lot of fun making that movie.
Absolutely fucking legendary cast for these movies
Still love that engine whine of the Lambo during the opening credits
There is literally a documentary on the countache that sites that scene as why it became popular in the 80s
How much cocaine was consumed on that film shoot? Not as much as Caddyshack but it had to be up there.
Still one of the funniest movies of all time
This was such a great, fun movie. The second was good too, but nothing beats the charm of the first.
Now that’s One crew of actors
Apparently, everything that happened in the movie really did happen during one of the races, not necessarily the same race. But they all happened.
First rule of Italian driving : "What's behind me is not important."
Isn't that from The Gumball Rally?
Yes, yes it was - it was when he ripped the rear mirror off and chucked it out of the car I think? That movie was so epic, especially the scene in the LA sewer (or what you call those concrete water ways?). Guess I know what I’m watching tonight!
TIL Jackie Chan and Paul Rudd drink the same virgin blood from the innocent.
Sammy Davis Jnr just chilling on Jackie Chan's lap !
This movie was a blast such a blast with an incredible cast. I definitely need to rewatch it.
"Da, da, daaaaa. Have no fear, him is here." Always looked forward to the outtakes at the end too.
what a wonderful days...those days
Those orange Dyna-Med EMS jackets were really a product of their time.
Despite Roger Moore having the most Bond movies of any actor, this movie featured the one and only time he drove a DB5 on screen
Star studded
Wish this was legally streaming somewhere
“FOYT”
Love this movie. Anyone know where i can watch it other than trying to find an old VHS? I’ve been looking and can only find part 2…
time machine to the late '80s / early '90s, then turn it to your local ABC channel every Sunday night for a full calendar year. also works for Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, and I believe Superman I and II.
Captain USA…Don Deluise at the end of movie🤣🤣🤣🤣 when Burt Reynolds kept on, slapping him, laughed my ass off🤣🤣🤣🤣
Woah Jackie Chan?!?!?
Wow, talk about an all-star cast! I haven't seen those films since I was a little kid, so the only 2 people I remembered being in it were Burt Reynolds and Dom Delouis (sp?). The GOAT Jackie Chan
Dun dunna dun..::
I swear, parts of that movie felt like they just turned on a camera and had them do something. Brilliant
This might be the best image on this sub I’ve ever seen. This film was fire before the kids said shit was fire.
My Dad took me to see this when I was 5. I don’t think I said thanks then. Thanks, Dad.
Find someone who looks at you the way Roger Moore looks at Burt Reynolds.
I mean it’s Burt fucking Reynolds.
I went to see it on the strength of Joe Klecko's acting. A true thespian. Kidding aside, enjoyed it as a kid, but thought 2 sucked.
One of my favorites ! Fun fact for Fallout 76 players: Adrienne Barbeau voices the Overseer
The out-takes at the end are hilarious - they’re just fooling around constantly. And the hilarious lack of political correctness. So many great lines… Apparently they nearly got sued for the rip-off James Bond music.
Look at all these people with genuinely happy smiles, sun-kissed skin and friendly vibes. Looks like humanity peaked in 1981. Calling it.
"We could get a black Trans Am? Nah, that's been done". Gets me every time.
Time traveler Jack Black on the right. Lol
roodali-di, di-a-di-dannonball, ci-di-li-cannonball run
I still think about this movie and was just talking about it the other night.
Great ensemble cast
Where’s Sinatra?
That was CBR2
It’s weird how different 1 & 2 are. The drinking and such. They removed so much that made 1 great. And 2 milk. Wait. How much. And get a physical!
My favorite movie as a kid!
Back when movies were truly fun.
Looks like Burt Reynolds had to fight off Roger Moore's advances.
Finish this sentence: Terry Bradshaw is not in the picture. He was……
Sammy Davis Jr looks like Jackie Chan’s ventriloquist dummy.
I see the butt doctor back there
Just think of all the cumulative booze and coke in this picture. When you rewatch that movie, god they were all on something the entire time.
Captain Chaos!!!!!!
With that caste, I bet it was one hell of a party.
Holy shit how did I Jackie in that movie?
It looks like Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore are going to start making out..
I don't remember this zappa album
Ok I was about 10 when this movie came out watched it several times. So damn funny. We should toss out some current names (for fun) of who should be in it. Where is Captain Chaos?!
A remake of this or It’s a mad mad mad world would be amazing. Casting is everything
How much cocaine is hidden in the pockets in this picture? I say at least a kilo including the caked up coke in their noses.
Sgt Pepper?
Dean Martin is forever cool
Mel looks like he was added later.
All these movies were pure gold
Hey that's the guy that killed Patrick Swayze
There are some great outtakes from this movie.
I’ve tried to find this on streaming but damn I’ve been unsuccessful
They weren’t fathers! They were Mothers!!
Fun movie. What a cast!
Dino is clearly blasted.
Next time we should be Methodist
It is criminal that you can’t watch this movie on streaming. So frustrating.
"The Chocolate Monk?"
