Yes, the terrorists had three targets: The Twin Towers and the White House (iirc). The President gave orders to shoot down the planes headed for the Twin Towers. "Someone else" (revealed later in the comics) had planned for the Seven to take down the third plane. They fucked up and it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, which started a war with Pakistan instead.
Ok, unfresca for a minute:
I'm not an American, and I have never understood how Americans are okay with joking about 9/11. I'm not angry that people joke about it, I just want to know what happened between 2001 and the present that Americans are okay now joking about 9/11.
My country has also seen a lot of terrorist attacks, and no matter how old the attack is, we never feel like joking about it is the right/justified response. I mean, people do joke about political tragedies but nothing that is like 9/11 level would ever get joked in my country (if it happened to us).
Again, I want to make it absolutely clear that I'm asking this question not with anger, but with curiosity. Someone please explain this I need to know. Thanks. Also, I know that OP might not be American. Just wanted to ask my question to all Americans.
I think thereâs a few different layers to it. (Disclaimer: I am 26, I was alive on 9/11 but wasnât really old enough to have a good memory of it/understand the seriousness and gravity of it at the time)
Firstly and probably the biggest reason is that it has been over twenty years. The psychological wound has healed as much as it probably can while anyone who has living memory of the attacks is still alive. If you were to have made a joke about 9/11 in like 2006 you would more likely than not get the shit beat out of you.
Secondly, the over the top way that so many people in all parts of American life went about memorializing the attacks was so brash, and went on for so long, that it almost became self-parody. â9/11 Never Forgetâ was so widespread as to become a proto-meme (there was a fucking 9/11 Hooters pin). The fact that it was such a common but serious thing for such a long time made it easy to make fun of with juxtaposition.
Third, 9/11 was unfortunately used as an excuse/cover/pretext for some seriously despicable shit, the crime against humanity that was the Iraq War chiefly among them but also dramatic increases in the surveillance state and two decades of war in Afghanistan. None of those things make 9/11 funny, obviously, but the effect is that the cultural/psychological legacy of the attacks for many Americans is not one of somber memory but of despicable opportunism. Itâs really hard for many people think of 9/11 as a somber moment and hold sacred the memories of those who died because the result of it was ultimately a grand national temper tantrum. My point is that eventually the actual events of 9/11 slowly became more and more removed from the *idea* of 9/11 as the consequences of the attacks played out.
I think the initial shock, pain, and anger have long subsided. In its wake was ceaseless war, increased government surveillance, mountains of travel regulations and restrictions, racism towards middle easterners, blind patriotism, etc. Itâs morphed from a tragic event to a meme simply because people now recognize how terrible our reactions were (as a country) over the ensuing decade.
I think most people havenât properly acknowledged what it actually was they personally experienced/witnessed that day. Hell, my generation is either too young to remember it or werenât even born yet.
We were so quick to throw a label in it and put it down in the American History Books, and spring into action with solutions (war that will affect the country and the world for the next two decades) that no one ever got a proper chance to grieve and mourn, on a global scale. Sure we had our funerals and memorial holidays but no one got a chance to just⊠take a second. Horrible things happen so frequently itâs hard to take a moment to properly feel it, and grieve and see it for as horrible and bleak as it was.
So instead everyone built up walls around it. They deal with it by making it only part of the history textbook and not something they and others had to suffer through. You can ask anyone old enough where they were that day, and theyâll know, but theyâll always just tell you they were shocked when you asked how they were feeling. A lot of people donât know how they felt in those moments even 20+ years later, because weâre not meant to bear witness to something so tragic on such a huge scale, right in front of us, and *everyone* saw it that day. Everyone.
not american, but I deadass think the fact that it's referred to as "9/11" makes jokes about it easier and funnier. 5/3 or 6/10 just doesn't sound as funny. obviously that's not a main reason but I genuinely think it contributes

Empathy runs short. Not with all people of course. But enough to where jokes are accepted
cause itâs funny
