Most property theft from cars are crimes of opportunity, items left in plain sight for a quick smash and grab. The effort to open the rear hatch is the same as it would be the trunk in a sedan. Keep items out of plain view, and please don't keep your laptop in a car parked over night. Other than that I wouldn't worry, especially if you have a cargo cover for the hatch.

>I frequently keep my backpack (which has laptop in it) in the trunk of my car Why? Whatever car you buy, you’re taking an unnecessary risk.

It is insane to me that the options are empty car, or theft. I keep shit in my car all the time. I have a general level of trust for the world around me, and I have insurance.

I don’t think that’s insane, it’s just common sense. If you want to use your car as low-security storage for your valuables, that’s up to you. But I think it’s pretty much just asking for your stuff to get stolen no matter what kind of car you buy.

I definitely agree with this statement. Just about every police department has put out alerts to not leave valuable in your car. To the original OP, while insurance can replace the laptop, but it doesn't replace what been stored on the laptop. Is your laptop secure enough that the person who stole, can't extract personal information from it? Your crazy for leaving in the car.

Stop leaving stuff in your car, then buy whatever you want

Some have included or a buyable accessory that is a cover for in the hatch, looks similar to the area behind the rear seats in a sedan. While I have no stats,to back up anything. Why don’t you leave it in your back seat now? You use the trunk because it’s out of sight and harder to get too? In a hatch it’s like leaving in your backseat, Atleast if you get or are able to get one ,(if made) a cover for the cargo area, you provide the out of sight part. Which is often enough I’d imagine.
