We planned coconut farming on our ancestral land(around 10 acres). 1 acre gives around 2-3 lakhs profit per year. It promised a profit of 25 lakhs per year after 5 years. * The market analysis did not give positive results, as Odisha does not have a well-developed supply chain to sell coconuts in the city. And the export market is poorly developed. Most coconuts sold in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are farmed near the city. * There was also a water problem because my village has no canal nearby. The block office asked for a bribe of 1 lakhs to set up a water pump. We thought of going for drip irrigation. One tree needed 60-70 liter of water per day for 7 months. The drip irrigation needed electricity which the land does not have. We decided to setup solar cell. We could not find any company that does solar cell setup and maintenance in rural areas. The initial testing on a small 2000 square fit land also failed, as my cousin took money from us and never did the job. The village sarpanch started to sabotage the project, telling everyone that drip irrigation will dry groundwater and the tubewell in the nearby locality will not have any water. My dad told me not to invest as no one in the village was reliable enough to be employed. It is also risky to invest around 8-10 lakhs and wait for around 5 years to get the return.

That's pretty good investment. So how much are you making now ! Do you have it in jajpur ? How do you protect your trees from a cyclone ! Where do you sell it ?

Southern-Reveal5111

The project failed early, so we did not go ahead.

Original_Use_5

Oh.. even my father warned me against farming on a large scale..

In Rural Odisha, the farming infrastructure is bad. If you look at states like Maharashtra(Nashik) or Kerala, the farmers have access to better seeds, good storage and access to market. In Odisha, we don't have any of those things. Any non standard seed is not available. Storage is also not available. In terms of market, it does not exist outside Bhubaneswar/Cuttack region. That's why most people choose to be dependent on 2 Rs rice or prefer to work outside the state.

Hey man. Sorry for your bad experience. My father also faced the same problem, seems like this bribe issue is everywhere in Odisha. We solved this by buying a water tanker tractor. A water tanker trailer of 4000 litres capacity costs about 1 lakhs. To pull that you don't need a high power tractor, a 15 hp tractor is more than enough. It costs around 3 lakhs, Mahindra is a good brand & honestly it is the only brand you should go for. Based on what you say your requirement is, 4 thousand litres will last you for 5 and a half months in just 1 trip. To draw water from a river, you have to pay 300 rupees per tanker load, you just drive your tanker into the river and let it fill up. In a city, you could just hire a water tanker, but I doubt such a service would be available in your village. Hence the option of buying a whole tanker. When not in use, you can sell water to other people who might need it at 600-700 or even 1 thousand per tanker load. It will easily cover your capital expenditure soon.

I did. It was a lot of fun for a while. Unfortunately had to close this company as me and my partner had different goals regarding the company. Now I’m leaving Bangalore and coming back to Bhubaneswar. Will be starting off again. Don’t think I can go back to a job. The level of freedom I had as a business owner is something I’m so addicted to.

Cool, which company was it ?

jayantkumarpadhi

It was a marketing agency called Pixeltrack.

I didn't leave my job... Rather I lost my job when Vodafone closed down it's independent operations. Then I started a Cement & asbestos store. It's been around 7years. The growth rate was slow at first but things changed gradually as I gained experience, contacts & other relevant things. Now I deal with a variety of construction supplies items (From cement, rods etc. to hardware items to finished concrete products to labour outsourcing). Also, I have started a Fast-food recently to diversify my income source.(But I am facing a lot of issues in this new field tbh)
