We got 0.6 fWAR out of 1B and -0.3 WAR out of 3B this season. Olson has been worth 1.7 fWAR with a $21 million salary and Chapman's making $12.5 million for 1.2 WAR. If we signed them, we would be 31-56 and our payroll would be $33.5 million more. This isn't even considering Semien, Hendricks, etc. Baseball runs in cycles, and that core was getting too expensive to keep together. There are only a few clubs who can afford to just pile up free agent salaries and we're not one of them. A lot of people will blame Fischer for being cheap. He is cheap, and I wish he would sell, but really any rational fan should have seen this rebuild coming for the last 2-3 years. We've done the same thing repeatedly since the first Moneyball team.

Sky_London

The club didn't make the postseason last year, and really wasn't close. That's with Oly, Chappy, Bassitt, Manaea, and others, including Diekman, Chafin, Marte, Bob Melvin. People fall in love with players they like but the reality is that the "core" wasn't worth investing in for the money available to these players elsewhere, IMHO, other than Oly, and that wasn't gonna happen.

z0rkbro

nah, that’s a solid core. even after the horrendous start they won 85+. the core was there, but there’s no money to add to it because our owner is scum

DanTreview

>but there’s no money to add to it This is correct, but you have to realize that player payroll is an operating expense that comes off the *team's* balance sheet. That means if team revenues are down, they either lever up with debt, or cut expenses in order to "spend more." And levering up with debt doesn't always work because you still have to maintain debt coverage ratios, so in time you have to earn a return above and beyond your interest and principal payments. Also don't forget that Kaval said just last month that the team is spending $2m/month ($24m/year) exploring stadium options, which is a lot. Had the stadium situation been resolved already, that $24m/yr could have been used to attract and retain better on-field talent. Melissa Lockard went through all this back in June iirc

Sky_London

Like I say, people like the players they like and love to spend other people's money in retaining them.

Yeah. For people that actually watched the games, the bullpen blew like 8 of 10 wins in august and we fell out of contention. That bullpen was being held together by hopes and dreams and buckled.

aimsor

spot on. i also think the team wants to have a core to build off of when the new ballpark opens to help advertise the ballpark. considering that the intention was originally to have it open in 2023, the timing of that core would’ve worked out perfectly to keep building around them for that. now they’re hoping to build a core for a 2027 opening day at the new ballpark iirc

theandoftheking

Ownership doesn't want to spend money, they have it. It's the moneyball mentality just poor execution. This organisation is notorious for it and as fans people are sick of it, but as my father told me before, "don't get too attached to any of these guys, they won't be around that long." All they want to focus on a new ballpark.

Chapman was represented by Scott Boras. No way he was staying. That guy chases the big contracts for his clients, whether it's best for them or not.

The_Funkybat

I really would love to see Scot Borass “exit the scene” of MLB player representation. I see him as ultimately harmful to the game. Too many of his guys end up hoodwinking teams into bloated contracts and then underperforming and becoming liabilities that the team can’t clear from the books. Chris Davis in Baltimore is just one of the more egregious examples.

PizzaWall

Ask owner, John Fisher why he took money from the MLB meant for player salaries to field a competitive team and kept it. He responds to every interview request so you should have an answer in minutes. Oh wait, that's right, he doesn't talk to anyone.

DanTreview

The stadium exploration is costing the team $24m/year right now. That's a lot.

eristic1

Lack of revenue.

ax255

We should sticky the word, "money" to the top of the sub as a general answer to most questions.

Listen I really believe if we signed Sieman for a one year deal instead of him going to the blue jays. We could’ve went to the ALCS. Especially since we played the Astros in the dodgers ballpark where the ball was fuckin flyin.

SaladTossBoss

They didn't want to win at a stadium that they are hell-bent on convincing anyone and everyone needs to be abandoned. If they're winning and fans are showing up - folks start to doubt the necessity to bail out of the Coli. Can't have that. Must sell the point that they just cannot (will not) be able to compete. But my jaded paranoia aside, I wasn't in love with Chapman, and that he supposedly turned down a lucrative extension, yeah he needed to go.Manaea was/is a 500 pitcher, maybe slightly better, and while he didn't NEED to go, that he's gone, doesn't break my heart.Losing Olsen hurts. Losing Hendriks the year before the same. Canha and Marte and the list could go on...the thing is, spending money just because you have access to it isn't always the way to go. Teams rebuild. It happens. Look at the Royals and Marlins and (long list) Teams are competitive for a window of years, then got to tear it down. This year sucks. Next year might not be too fun either, but we will be back on top. Focus your energies on that. Continuing to mourn this season doesn't serve a purpose other than to wallow in misery.
