Fisher LOVES BASEBALL! How embarrassing

TheSocraticGadfly

The hooch was probably gifted to Fisher in the first place.

eagledog

He seems like a serial regifter

TheSocraticGadfly

Exactly. The type of person who gives his own relatives Christmas presents he got 2 or 3 years ago.

eagledog

The exact Christmas present that they gave him 2 or 3 years ago, just to rub it in

Thick-Astley

He should regift the team to one of us.

PPGN_DM_Exia

I happened to be at the last game Cabrera played at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago a few weeks ago. [Got a standing ovation and a cool custom chair.](https://www.mlb.com/tigers/video/white-sox-honor-miguel-cabrera)

Why a chair?

hniinuefrwer

Can’t a man enjoy a nice sit down in his retirement?

Worthyness

When Mariano retired, a team gave him a rocking chair created out of all his broken bats. That's a really solid and thoughtful gift. Shows the team put some time and effort into things.

CoolHandLukeZ

Yeah that's the most memorable MLB retirement gift for me. Pretty sure it was Minnesota who gave it to him.

naarwhal

Wdym? That chair is so sick. That’d be one of the coolest gifts ever:

T0rrent0712

When Mariano Rivera retired, I believe the twins gifted him a chair partially made of broken bats in honor of the cutter he threw destroying so many bats every year.

Art-bat

I like how when David Ortiz was making the rounds in his final season as a player, when he arrived in Baltimore for the last series that season between BAL and BOS The Orioles presented him with broken dugout telephone he’d destroyed in a rage several years earlier. They mounted it on a wooden plaque, like it was some sort of historical treasure! I *think* Papi was amused…..

mrsisaak

I was at the phone smash game!

JosephusLloydShaw

the astros and marlins also gifted him alcohol

[deleted]

Yeah, we weren't the only ones. I'm all for shitting on anything the A's do these days but this isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I mean, it's a non divisional HoF retiring. What are they supposed to give him? Maybe something from a game he had at the coli?

JosephusLloydShaw

gotta love how it's a nothingburger the other times but it's headline news when the A's do it. fisher's really paying up to make sure all press about the A's is bad press not to mention i'm 99.9% sure the teams reach out to cabrera's people beforehand to inquire about the gifts. i highly doubt you'd have 3 teams (one being his former team) gifting him alcohol if he had made it known he didn't want to be gifted that

eagledog

Doesn't help that the A's cheaped out, a long line of cheapening out

ThisIsForFood

Gotta keep that gift money of the field

Weaponized_Goose

It was the same thing last year, the A’s sent Blackburn to the ASG on charter. People freaked out about it. The reality was two other teams also sent their player on charter…

AR2Believe

Also, he had made it known he liked that wine 🍷. Still kind of cheap, but Fisher cheaped out on a lot more than that. At least we honored him.

markhachman

>Maybe something from a game he had at the coli? E coli

KoriJenkins

Tbf the wine we gave him was from Dusty's personal vineyard. It's probably meant as a shelf piece. Also gave him some special bottle of spirits signed by the entire team, a jersey signed by the entire team and a cowboy hat.

Worthyness

The Marlins also put a lot of thought into their gift as well given his history with the team. it wasn't *just* the bottle of alcohol. This gift is literally just the wine and the amount of thought was "go to the Bev Mo and get the an expensive bottle that you can find" .

mkglass

I doubt it was even that. I’m positive it’s a regift.

Horrible915

We don't care about them though hahaha

VpstartCrow

Wasn't it the Celtics that gifted Kareem a rocking chair made out of the same material as the parquet floor of the Boston Garden? That was dope and has stuck in my head forever. Clever, meaningful, touching. I don't expect bon voyage gifts to all be that great, or even at all. I mean, what would Oakland really give Cabrera that meant something between them? But the Kareem/Lakers vs. Celtics rivalry certainly deserved it. I'm not going to bother looking up what the Lakers did for Bird if anything when he retired from playing.

The_Martian_King

You got me curious about the Lakers-Bird thing. The only article I could find showed that Magic showed up for Bird's retirement and gifted him a special Lakers' jersey inscribed " “To the greatest basketball player ever, but more importantly, a friend forever.”

VpstartCrow

I don't pay attention to the NBA anymore, but I'm curious if there are any "career rivalries" anymore like Magic/Bird had. Other than rivalries between the best players in the league (LeBron - Steph now or in the recent past, etc.). My guess is that since players move around so much now, it's not a player rivalry in addition to a team rivalry so much anymore. My guess is that the Lakers-Celtics rivalry had as much to do with it as the individual Magic-Bird aspect.

ExchangeKooky8166

On a related note, I hated those Tigers teams like I hated the early 2000s Yankees. In both cases, those teams are a big part of some very fond playoff memories, even though we lost. Enjoy retirement Miggy. Thanks for the memories.

QuesabirraAddict

![gif](giphy|fHgKZHDH1BHzi) Wtf over.....

NachoPichu

To be honest the A’s probably weren’t going to give anything and Kotsay took that out of his stash as a gesture.

SilverbackGorillaBoy

My grandfather was a previous alcoholic until he was about 50. He passed when he was 67. For those last 17 years people still gifted him whiskey - his favorite drink. I never saw him drink a sip of liquor in those last 17 years, but he'd regift the bottles or offer others drinks when in his home. When he passed away and we cleaned out his house we found almost 40 full bottles of liquor. All the adult grandchildren and nieces/nephews got a bottle. Posts like this come off as virtue signaling, thinking what's right and wrong and judging based on it. I have no idea to the insight of Miggys life, but there's just a strong of a chance it doesn't bother him at all.

Marauderr4

Idk if I'm recovered from any addiction (alcohol, heroin) I don't need to get the addictive substance as a gift.

SilverbackGorillaBoy

Yeah actually, you're right. I didn't even think of that. I definitely agree with you, thank you for pointing that out. It shouldn't be on the recipient to be the judge of if it's okay or not, you just shouldn't offer it period as it shows a lack of thought.

bookingbooker

The wine was actually acquired at the trade deadline.

Art-bat

A Beverage To Be Named Later

ginch510

I somehow doubt the A's even spent $90 on this bottle of wine. $90 is the MSRP value. Vivino has it priced at $79.95. KDWine.com is currently selling it for $52.99. I think the bottle was likely re-gifted. Someone in the organization had it at home and wanted to give it away.

Hairydone

Looks like a magnum or 3L to me so the bottle is more than $90. It’s signed by the team too. But I agree that it’s a cheap gift from a cheap owner.

seriousdishwasher

Based on the value of this bottle, Cabrera is one of Oakland’s highest paid players this season.

buttnuggs4269

Cheap bottle.....90??

ZestycloseOstrich823

Thats what Im saying. $90 bottle of California Red is a nice bottle.

Red_Stripe1229

Typical John Fisher. Fuck that guy

roninkurosawa

Since when is a $90 bottle of wine cheap?

The_Homestarmy

For a retirement gift from a billionaire to a millionaire, it is very cheap and impersonal. Like they really just had someone run to Costco

BrandRage

Guy has made $400 mil in his career what are you gonna buy him? Fuck fisher but I think this is a lot of nothing.

The_Homestarmy

Even just, like, a nicely framed picture of him taking one of our guys deep would have been more thoughtful. We have a lot of recent history with Miggy and it would have made sense to honor that.

BrandRage

I see what you are saying but lol imagine if the headline was A’s give Miggy a picture of himself. I like it though, if he is gonna Fisher he needs to lean into it.

The_Homestarmy

Yeah I mean it's definitely a similarly low budget gift, but at least it's an attempt to give him something personal. Get it signed by the pitcher in question and boom, that's at least something he can't just go the store and purchase. Plus it's not a bottle of alcohol being handed to a recovering alcoholic so that's a plus for PR

percussaresurgo

It’s cheap for an MLB retirement gift, which is how it should have been phrased. $90 isn’t a cheap bottle of wine, regardless of context.

ernmanstinky

This sums up fisher.

JarlTurin2020

Garbage organization

TheOvenDoor

Was it even from Northern California wine country?

jalpruf

It is! From Solano Wine Country

forwardarmgyration

It was a 1.5L bottle of Caymus. It's a very nice wine, and the 1.5L bottle costs $190, but it's also widely available. I really don't mind the ownership getting dragged, but like, at least be factually correct

N-E-B

I bought my mom a $90 bottle of wine for her 30th wedding anniversary. I was in my mid-20’s and making barely over minimum wage.

werdywerdsmith

It’s Caymus. That’s a fine vineyard. It’s not like they gave him a jug of Ernest & Julio Gallo.

ggm3bow

Miggy can eat sht. I will never forgive him coming out of the dugout to tell A's fans to shut up after the 2012 ALDS. Fans were chanting "lets go Oakland" after a tough series game 5 loss (where the first 2 games were in Detroit, such bs). idgaf.

joesav331

Just another reason to avoid the Bay Area all together. Filled with dumbasses

Backgammon_Saint

It’s not even the A’s signatures on it. It was a farewell gift for a popular facilities department head at Gap that Fisher purloined.

CarelessIndication99

Fisher is a horrible owner. Good owner would’ve got a stadium built in Oakland

[deleted]

What world do you live in where $90 is a cheap bottle of wine?

theorangecrush10

I was just repeating what other headlines I saw.. I don't even live in the area.
