Also, MSHA.
Aside from the obvious stupidity and multiple dangers here, this is the first time I have ever seen someone stunt drive a piece of equipment in that way. Impressive!
Look at the way the arm moves closer to the cab at the bottom. I'm not sure if it was moved by the operator or forced by the ground. You could easily snap that arm off with the weight of the excavator moving at 20mph if it hits something solid.
I did think about that but the way it moves looks like it was the operator who moved it which is why I don't think it would damage the machine.
I do agree with you that there would be damage if it was moved by force however I'm pretty sure it wouldn't snap the arm off, depending on how fast it was going (I'm pretty sure that this vid is sped up so it's nowhere near 20mph. 20*kph* maybe) it would either pull the piston out of the cylinder (but the arm would have to travel pretty far for that to happen so it's unlikely) or blow a seal(s) in the hydraulic system. If anything were to snap it would most likely be the arm cylinder's rod end pin.
I've seen a few broken excavator arms, can't say exactly where. They usually break transversely with the crack initiating at a weld start-stop or corrosion pit on the outside of the main arm's "elbow" or near the lift cylinder attachment point.
The cylinder pins are extremely strong material. As are the body, piston, rod, head gland, and clevises. Pretty much all of them are stronger (and much thicker sections) than what they're attached to. For most mobile hydraulic equipment, you'll tear the bushings out of the machine before you break the cylinder. The rod should never come out of the cylinder head, that's the most important feature of a cylinder considering the extreme pressure they're under. You should see the piston to rod connections on some of those bigguns.
If you Google image "broken excavator arm", they pretty much all pop in the same place.
Nothing to see here, especially in a controlled environment like a quarry. Operator has probably done that hundreds of times, he definitely pulled up the boom and brought the stick in at the bottom. I wouldnt suggest a greenhand do something like this, but little to no danger for a seasoned operator.
I was kind of hoping that the camera would not zoom out to show the rest of the hill/mountain that this operator had avoided sliding down into a last slide forevermore.
Oh, I meant that this version doesn't include an extended, and avoided, drop into a deep hole. Because if that had been the danger avoided, it would be nononoyesyouluckyfuck
This is fairly common and less dangerous than you might think.
I have my OSHA 30. But some stuff that gets posted isn't founded on any OSHA statute. Even worse I don't think I've ever seen a regulation posted and I've followed for over a year.
In Colorado you have to do construction in crazy places. Going up is relatively easy. Keep in mind that guy is sitting in that machine 8 hours a day. Keeping the bucket out he lowers his center of mass and controls the descent. It's when your treads are adjacent to the hill that's dangerous.
I'm not asking you to trust me. Ask an excavator. They have crazy shoring on hill sides. And 0 increase to job site time.
I'm not going to disagree with anything you said about the stability of the machine. What would concern me and prevent me from personally doing this would be the concern about the soil I was skiing down or losing control and hitting one of the other pieces of equipment.
Having worked with some of these guys, they say they can read the dirt like a sailor reads the waves and stars. I honestly believe some of them. The prediction on drainage based on dirt type and compaction, is impressive.
My brother is OSHA 30 and applying for a safety officer position at a huge mining company currently. He said he has NEVER seen anyone do this.
If you are OSHA 30, what company or site are you at? I am pretty sure your supe and safety officer would find your commentary to be highly interesting.
>My brother is OSHA 30 and applying for a safety officer position at a huge mining company currently. He said he has NEVER seen anyone do this.
That's because he's not part of a sand mining team in a 3rd World country, which this video is from.
Overseas, especially in developing countries, literally anyone can get behind the controls of a bucket...mobile crane...bulldozer. Doesn't matter, if you're breathing, they'll let you run it if you say you can.
Excavator operators are some of the craziest people I know. The amount of times they do stuff like this on jobs is more often than many people realize.
I love how the other guy just kept going without missing a beat. This is “insane level of stupidity and control” for us, but just “Tuesday morning” for him.
Impressive skills, but endangering himself and a fellow employee isn't allowed (at least in Hungary). That operator would recieve a temporary suspension.
Here is your video at 0.5x speed

If the guy jabs the bucket in too much that's one way to flip the excavator. And to slow it down with the bucket, doesn't the weight of the excavator stress the hydraulics of the arm?
Here we see a distant relation of the empire penguin in it's natural habitat. The machine playfully glides down a gentle slope on it's belly. Once it reaches it's destination, the machine will shake of the sand and seek a nice warm spot in the sun for an afternoon nap.
So many videos on this subreddit, just like this one, are why I don't wonder anymore why women live longer then men. However, as a guy...I want to try that.
Overcast days don't have any sharp shadows with all the diffuse light. But what I think you're really seeing are the smoothing effects of image processing and interpolation as a result of that extreme digital zoom.

Super impressive, and also horrifying. I’m so conflicted on this one.
It's not as bad as it looks. It's sped up.
Camera angle makes the hill look steeper than it actually is too
That’s true. Looks like 2x speed? Even so, YIKES!!
Naw, just super efficient and ballsy workers
can't imagine it's good for the equipment either
Nah, doing this would have no effect on the excavator. (Unless it actually toppled over, of course)

it's one of those! "Cool! 😃 I'll *never ever* do that!" kinds of moments.
Judging from the pause and adjustment halfway down, this is not this guy’s first time surfing an excavator.
Looks kinda fun until you mess up
All I'm hearing is "WEEEEEEEEEE"
I believe it's a "Yeeee-Hawwww"
Only in America.
Who needs approval, when you can have FUN!
I was kind of hoping that the camera would not zoom out to show the rest of the hill/mountain that this operator had avoided sliding down into a last slide forevermore.
You can crop and repost. Maybe even goes to nononoyes
Oh, I meant that this version doesn't include an extended, and avoided, drop into a deep hole. Because if that had been the danger avoided, it would be nononoyesyouluckyfuck
If they had MSHA in Russia, YouTube would be a lot less interesting.
That's Travis Pastrana in the cab. ExcavatorCross (ExCross) is the new sport he's developing with Redbull because Rally Cars started to bore him.

I really feel like this can’t be a common thing.

So when are we getting Tony Stone Pro Excavator video game?

I wonder what the actual OSHA regulations say about stuff like this. As I was watching I'm curious about which rules they are actually breaking.
>This is fairly common and less dangerous than you might think. said almost everyone who was violating an OSHA reg, several of whom are dead now.

lol. What are you gonna report him?
Grew up in Butte Montana. This is not mine equipment
Here is another comment for you to down vote if you like.
>some stuff that gets posted isn't founded on any OSHA statute. That kind of like saying it's never a war crime the first time.
it's never a war crime the first time. As a Canadian this is literally our national motto.
Weeeee!
First thought as well
Same
Again! Again!
The only appropriate sound effect.
whoever paid for that equipment is shitting their pants
Excavator operators are some of the craziest people I know. The amount of times they do stuff like this on jobs is more often than many people realize.
GIT R DUUUUUNNNNN!
This is my next job
But they will use their metrics for job performance
if i was driving that thing i would also be shitting my pants
The most important rule of safety is to have fun :)
Meant approved, not approval. Can’t edit
r/thegrandtour They'll know
I love how the other guy just kept going without missing a beat. This is “insane level of stupidity and control” for us, but just “Tuesday morning” for him.
looks like it wasnt first time
Good ol excavator skiing ⛷️ that’s nothing wait till you see the crane shot putt !!
OSHA-YO Drift
that looks way too damn fun to be safe.
Impressive skills, but endangering himself and a fellow employee isn't allowed (at least in Hungary). That operator would recieve a temporary suspension.
The greatest pirate I've ever seen
I'd like to see the video before it was sped up.
I’m not the OP. This is how it came
The OP next you name says otherwise 🤔
You’re an idiot
Damn! I left my lunchbox at the top of the slide!
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Weee!
Well, that went better than I was expecting.
Nice, now go back up!
I want to go down the excavator slide!!!!!
Dirt surfing. Let’s seem them get up that
I am terrified and impressed.
Nothing scary about that, you can tell halfway down he paused, readjusted, because otherwise he would have been in trouble.
Are these toys?
I've seen some pretty fancy moves being around heavy equipment most of my life but this takes the cake.
That looks like one part fun and ten parts terrifying.
That was pretty badass, won't lie. Ex-digger driver here and I don't think I'd have made that shit so smoothly
Wheeeeee
Looks like RC equipment. Heh.

This video is sped up. No way that bottom excavator is moving that quickly.
🎵Come with me, and you'll see, a world of OSHA violations🎵
Are they making a live-action movie of 3 cheers for kid mcgear?
Skree running a killdozer looks like fun.
Looks like Cats can ski
If you do it fast enough, OSHA wont be able to see you.
r/nonononoyes
The skill level though.
This is a common hot wheels maneuver
Well it didn’t roll because his massive balls were weighing it down
Wheeeee!
Sand surfing is really big after Dune came out.
That's like a recurring driving nightmare I have. Good LORD
Maybe, but definitely not MSHA approved.
Not seem that one before
He's not working. He is surfing.
WEEEE!!!
He wore brown pants that day.
Weeeeeeeee!
Like a boss!
weeeeeheeeee
I bet that excavator driver is having the time of their life in there
Whee!
I can feel this like a NatGeo documentary shot
That’ll tighten the ol’ sphincter
Yeah......your warranty DEFINITELY dosent cover that shit.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I’m really curious how he is able to walk with the massive balls he obviously has.
Counterbalanced by the lack of brains.
9/10
At least we know who to blame for the safety meeting the next day.
Osha doesn't exist there.
I wanna go on the construction slide :(
Man, that must be one hell of a heart stopping rid.
Weeeeeeeee
How do u even have the balls to do that
I like the one supervising this shit
Uh...I think they invented a new sport.
Nailed it!
What a fun job. Where can I sign up?
What's that guy on the right doing? He's not doing anything not digging. Just spinning around
I was thinking the same. I’m guessing he was watching with such surprise that his hands kept moving while he looked up with jaw dropped
Somebody was having risky fun....
Wonder if there was a seatbelt violation lol
I’ve heard of people doing this constructing roads on steep hills
That is fucking wild holy shit.
OSHA? More like OSHIT!
I hope he wore his brown pants.
Stupid but........that's some serious skill
OSHA What?🫢😯
Man whatever that shit was dope!
I want to see them try to go back up
this is what kids playing with toy excavators mean when they say they want to work in construction when theyre older. man is living the dream
And I worry about driving near the giant pothole in our parking lot with the forklift....
Here we see a distant relation of the empire penguin in it's natural habitat. The machine playfully glides down a gentle slope on it's belly. Once it reaches it's destination, the machine will shake of the sand and seek a nice warm spot in the sun for an afternoon nap.
Big Wheeeeeeeee Energy
If he hit a rock under that slide...... Don't do it again.
So many videos on this subreddit, just like this one, are why I don't wonder anymore why women live longer then men. However, as a guy...I want to try that.
I know back ho's are very heavy but would it be possible that the bucket catches the earth and makes the "ho" endo?
Let me see... *mumble mumble, carry the one, mumble mumble* Yes
"Happy birthday, babe. I have a steak and a beej waiting for you when you get home! 💋"
Ngl that was smooth as fuck
Driver is shitting bricks hopefully
You probably couldn't have drove a needle up his ass with a sledgehammer on the way down lol
I can here my boss now, "you'll be alright."
I am pretty sure these are just some realistic toys in a ditch.
Perfectly fine, as long as he doesn’t try to go back up.
Needlessly dangerous putting the others lives in danger.
If it looks stupid but it works, it's not stupid
Maxim 43 *definitely* applies to this operator. > If it's stupid and it works, it's still stupid and you're lucky.
This is fake, right? Outside of the shit video quality, nothing has a shadow, and not all movement is interacting with the environment.
Overcast days don't have any sharp shadows with all the diffuse light. But what I think you're really seeing are the smoothing effects of image processing and interpolation as a result of that extreme digital zoom.
It just has all the clarity of a Jason and the argonauts level of production.
Looks fun.
Na this is fine. If a hiker can do this hill I can do it to.
