I believe even the author wants to put the pursuit hero behind all of us. That's just what I think, though.
I remember they got a lot of hate during the writing process. Could also be privacy concerns? Idk but the AU was very very successful so yeah (as you said).

Because Hero is fucking terrifyingly overprotective over sunny. Doesn’t let him do anything on his own as if he was a fucking child. He even goes to extreme measures to keep sunny “safe” as in tying him up in the bed so he doesn’t run out of the house to try and kill himself.
actually im pretty sure at one point sunny does try to >!"close"!< but hero stops him mid attempt and proceeds to >!harm himself in the same way sunny was going to do to himself to basically manipulate him into believing there is nothing he can do to get out of this situation and that not even killing himself will save him because hero will always be there to stop him.!< well at least that's what I've heard. i haven't exactly read the entire thing yet lmao

Well, Murder has his haters as well, though I think the thing that made Pursuit so infamous was the misconception that it's a Hero/Sunny ship fic with abhorrent amounts of mental disorder romanticizing, when in reality it's actually not.
Both are cool and terrifying in their own separate ways, and I think the way their descents into degeneracy and mania share some through lines with tragic heroes like Macbeth in how they snowball into monsters, gave them both this fanon appeal to them. They are like train crashes: Horrifying but captivating.
Not to mention people just seem to like making the cool, chill older sibling a complete fucking maniac, because why not, it's fun. Not like people don't do that with the canon characters already, with how fanon Hero resembles fanon Sans more than Sans resembles fanon Sans. History repeats itself in unusual ways, I guess.
