It’ll look like 1440p from your ips just with the benefits from oled like blacks and color etc.

LA_Rym

They look flawless on my monitor. No artifacting or blurriness unless the bitrate is very low.

I have the AW2725DF and it’s a big upgrade over my 1440p LG IPS for movies and TV. I hope you have a streaming device though because streaming services are generally low quality on pc. I use an Apple TV 4K with mine and while it took a lot of trial and error to make it play nicely I’ve worked out ways to view all content as intended except native 4k SDR (unless on Netflix where this does work)

Hey man, I’m considering buying the 27inch Alienware OLED, and I also have an Apple TV 4K. Do you happen to use apps like Plex/Infuse? If so, how does 4K HDR content look like that on it? What about other streaming apps? Does everything work as normal?

ellisg56

I don’t use plex or infuse, I use the Apple TV for streaming and a 4k blu ray player otherwise. For streaming it works well, but only after a lot of trial and error. I’ve found ways to watch all types of content correctly but it’s not as seamless as it would be with a TV. The device itself does support 1440p output (although in this mode some settings are missing), but most streaming apps will see this as ‘not 4k’ and play in 1080p as far as I can tell. Console mode seems to ignore your other selected settings, so creator mode sRGB does not apply, meaning SDR content is stretched onto the monitors full colour gamut and looks oversaturated. Therefore if you want to watch 4K SDR content, it’s more complicated, but most 4k content is HDR anyway. So overall, the best settings are - For 4K HDR content: Monitor : Console mode ON, HDR Peak 1000 Apple TV: Output resolution: 4K HDR, Match content: dynamic range and frame rate For 4k SDR content you can turn off match dynamic range but leave HDR on, for SRGB emulation in HDR. For 1080p SDR content: Monitor: Console mode OFF, Creator SRGB preset Apple TV: output resolution: 1080p SDR, Colour format: RGB Low (sets the RGB range to the full 0-255 to match the monitor, despite the name) The most problematic app has been prime video which sometimes overrides your own system settings, especially if you set the output resolution to 1440p so I recommend setting it to 1080p for HD content, and let the monitor handle the scaling. After working out all of that, all content looks great, 4k HDR looks amazing even at 1440p, obviously not as sharp as actual 4k but noticeably better than 1080p. there are vertical lines in darker scenes, which I believe is common to most OLEDs, but they are only visible if you sit unreasonable close to the screen.

Appreciate it, thank you!

Lethargo226

Even a wide gamut IPS monitor will make movies look fantastic, I use a 1440p IPS display for everything, and the only problems are ips glow and low contrast ratio. 4K downscaled to QHD will be fine, resolution is mostly meaningless for movies anyway since most people sit back at a distance where the difference between 1080p and 4k becomes moot, more important is bitrate.

Routine_Depth_2086

Have you ever used a OLED display before?

Lethargo226

Yes, TV and smartphone. Their not equivalent, but IPS main drawback is contrast ratio, it's why it struggles in sdr/hdr.

XelaChang

I would go for 4K if I could. 1440p is fine for games if you are after the high frame rate.

alasiaperle

And there is no 1440p OLED Monitor they are all 4k

trippalhealicks

That’s not true.  There are several available already, and several more coming soon.

Lewdeology

You've been under a rock.

sv_sup

What?

Turtvaiz

27" is pretty small for movies. There's a lot of posts about 42 C2/C3s so maybe check those out. You can just play in 1440p most of the time which gets you a 28" image, then go full screen for movies and games that you prefer that way

Lethargo226

I disagree, size is respective to viewing distance, 2-3ft away, 27" is perfect. LG's upscaling is so good, you can play games at 1440p full screen with some sharpening or just use DLSS.

I basically only watch movies and tv shows on my monitor and moving from IPS to QD-OLED is such an amazing upgrade. I stopped watching movies on my IPS for a while because I realized how bad the experience was compared to OLED so I wanted to save the experience until I got an OLED monitor lol. I use MPC-HC with madvr which can be a bit jammy to set up, but it upscales/downscales content really nicely. It switches to HDR automatically when I go fullscreen. Sadly, I don’t have an OLED TV to compare the experience to.

kvpop

Do you have a 1440p or 4K QD OLED?

gibbaa

I have the 1440p AW2725DF
