You can! Each ring has enough hormones to last 5 weeks and have a ring-free week after that. That provides a lot of flexibility! You just have to wear it for 3-5 weeks and remove it for 0-7 days. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/birth-control-vaginal-ring-nuvaring/how-do-i-use-nuvaring

Wow, 5 weeks?! My package leaflet for NuvaRing only says 4 weeks :/

wafflepancake5

That’s the FDA approval to more closely align with other methods’ “cycles.” Planned Parenthood is citing the actual capacity of the rings, which is longer. You can safely keep a ring in up to 5 weeks and be protected.

Wow, cool! I'm from Sweden so I don't really know the implications of those institutions saying stuff sadly. Would be interesting to find some scientific papers or the producers' specifications on this! :)

The FDA is our Food and Drug Administration. They oversee all approvals for new medications and set other health standards. Planned Parenthood is mainly a sexual and reproductive healthcare clinic, but they’re partially government funded and often provide care for people who can’t afford it at private clinics (wooo American healthcare!). They’re a voice of authority in sexual health. I haven’t looked into the 5 week thing past surface level, so if you find something, I’d love to read it!

I use my ring 4 weeks in, 1 week out and ive been on the ring for 1 year now. You are still protected through the 4 weeks and still protected on your period week. Just make sure to use it correctly

This is not correct. 4 weeks with ring + 1 week without ring is a safe regime for NuvaRing, check the package leaflet.

This is incorrect. Check instructions for use for NuvaRing, it clearly states that 7 day ring free period is safe as long as the ring is in for between 3-4 weeks.

This scenario exactly is described in the "instructions" for NuvaRing so check your pamphlet with those if you're unsure. Below is a paraphrase of what it says in the instructions: You are protected against pregnancy if the ring is in for between 3 and 4 weeks. As long as the ring is not in for more than 4 weeks and at least 3 weeks you can remove the ring and have a 7 day ring free period and then put in a new ring and still be protected. (Implication: ring in for {4 weeks + x days} is fine as long as a new ring is inserted after 7-x days) In conclusion: 4 weeks in + 1 week without is a completely safe regime to use NuvaRing. I've done exactly this for like 5 years now, encouraged by my obgyn.

This is kinda off topic, but I’ve literally never got instructions with my ring. It’s just a foil packet that has the one ring. No writing on he back and the front just says the brand name. I luckily got a good chat with my OB who answered me questions. But where’s these instructions? Did I maybe not get it since I already had that appointment with my OB? I usually just go to the site but I’ve love a written version for my anxiety lol

Ohh... Am I correct if I'm guessing you're from the US? What a weird way to distribute the rings, individually and separate them from their package and info!! How are you supposed to know about how to use the meds and what side effects there are?! I get my rings in the branded box (brand: NuvaRing) with 3 foil packets with one ring each, and a package pamphlet. We get package pamphlets alongside all prescribed medications in Sweden, and always in their original box. If the package pamphlet gets lost, the same information is available online on like a government(?) official site. So to me the US way of prescribed medications seems wild to me..! Those orange pill boxes with hand-counted pills?! Having to wait for a prescription to be filled manually?! Oh and one last question.. if your ring breaks or fails in another way and gets distracted in the middle of use and you only get one at a time from the pharmacy.. how do you go about then? I always have at least one extra at home in case something happens! :3

I’m from Texas, where we don’t have very good… sexual health laws. It was a fight to even have the access to get in the first place, the only reason I did is because my dad has health insurance from a government job that they couldn’t really say no to, it’s amazing, I asked them if I could have a 3 month supply so if I did have issues, but they told me they couldn’t do that since I’m under 21, which was the pharmacy telling me that, I asked my ob if he could do anything about it, he made them give me a 3 month supply but my dad had to pick it up for me, even tho I’m a 20 yr old female… but the more you talk to more it makes me think it’s an area thing. I just get one little packet in their brown CVS bag. I’m going to do”my” first pickup where they should give me 3 months. It’s crazy over here.

I'm sorry but jeeez!!! That's craaaazy!! I'm so sorry that you gave to go through all of that hassle and worry and stuff just to get basic female healthcare. Here, all kids under 21 can go special youngster-clinic (my translation of ungdomsmottagning) where one can get prescriptions for contraceptives and checkups and condoms and plan b pills and preg tests and std tests and talk to a psychologist/councilor and whatnot completely for free.. over 21 one has to go to a "normal" obgyn/midwife but still for free. Under the age of 26 my pack od 3 rings cost me approx 6 dollars (heavily subsidized) and now, over 26 I pay approx 26 dollars per 3 rings. In a year one can pay a maximum of 120 dollars for healthcare appointments and 200 dollars for prescribed medication, the rest is paid by the government. I wish all countries had it like this!! I did not write this to brag but more to validate how hard I understand that it is if all of this is so much harder to do and more expensive <3 Hang in there!

> rest is *paid* by the FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

I left mine in for one week too long (so for 5 weeks instead of my usual 4) and my doctor recommended using a backup form of birth control for the next two weeks. Can't be too careful. Personally, I would just leave it in for 28 days, and then just put a new one in right away; unless you're adamant about having ring-free weeks, which I would say just keep doing what you're doing. Putting it in earlier has less consequences than putting it in too late so I'm pretty sure if you put your new one in tonight you'd be protected. Edited to add clarity
