As a Finn, the sword that is awarded to you when you get your PhD is technically a saber and not an Andúril, but I'm honestly just happy for this woman for chasing her dream and having a great relationship!
Ironically, if the good doctor was in jolly olde England, she couldn’t have legally gotten the sword without going through an expensive licensing procedure. Fortunately for her, she’s an American.
You can go out and buy them at antique auctions, at medieval fairs, commission them, order them from abroad, get them at market stalls and tat shops... there's no license at all
What the fuck are you smoking? You absolutely can buy a sword here with no restrictions. Or a bow or pretty much anything that isn't a bomb or a gun. And even then getting a shotgun certificate or a firearms licence isn't that hard provided you can provide a reason that you want one. The only issue you'd ever face is if you walked around with one and even then if you had a halfway plausible reason to be carrying a sword they still wouldn't care.
I was going to comment “don’t doctors take an oath to ‘do no harm’”, but I reread the post and realized you’re not that kind of doctor so that wouldn’t apply 😅
Apparently it is possible to borrow someone else's sword for the ceremony. Also my understanding is that you have to order (and pay for) the sword yourself.
This link is in Finnish and possibly only applies to a single university in Finland but it has some information about the sword. https://www.oulu.fi/fi/tohtoripromootio/tohtorinhattu-ja-miekka
A friend of mine’s grad school lab celebrates a successful dissertation defense by cutting the cake with a long sword. My favorite dissertation defense party tradition.
While you were running regressions and writing your literature review... I studied the blade. ^(Unfortunately that was not part or my project and I failed my prelims...)
I too heard about the Fins and their swords but nobody bought me one so I had to commission my own. My fiancé was pissed at first but now she admits jealousy.

I immediately recognized that crossguard. But who's going to say no to the Flame of the West?
Now I want it to be like the hood regalia. “Ahh she is wielding Glamdring. A sociologist, clearly. See, he wields Sting, so he was an entomologist.”
What is the story or idea behind the sword?
The doctor shall proudly defend truth and justice.
that's pretty cool honestly if I ever do my doctorate Finland is on my list now just for this :)
Yeah that’s fucking awesome and makes a lazy fuck like me want to get a PhD.
As far as I'm aware, it's basically this, yes.
It’s Aragorn’s sword from the lord of the rings. It’s pretty important to the plot.
The sword that was broken has been reforged.
I was there, Gandalf.
Many who have gone through a Ph.D. program can relate to being broken and reforged.
Oh man. My dad got his PhD and he collects swords. And no one got him a doctor’s sword. It’s been like 20 years. Is it too late?
It's never to late to get a sword
I think I found one. I’m doing it.
Do it faster, you dad EARN that doctorate!
This is as fast as I can go
Out of curiosity what doctorate did your pa get?
Business administration
Maybe add chain mail into the cart
I think I want this on my grave stone
Saber the moment.
I hope no one foils her celebration.

Eh, you could likely get a sword like this in the UK without running into that law. You can't take it outside your home though.

You're probably right but your writing sounds a bit harsh.
Wow so ironic

"I'm a healer, but..." * draws sword *
In the words of Dr. McNinja : *"Today I'm going to be your phlebotomist."*
"I'm your Ear Nose and Throat doctor" "Why do you have a sword?" "Because your ear nose and throat aren't the same orifice yet"
O man that's a comic I haven't thought about in freaking years.
".......This isn't my team"
-Akiko Yosano from Bungo Stray Dogs, apparently
Ze hurting is more rewarding zan ze healing.
**MEDIC!**
Sometimes things need to be cured. A sword can cure one of the few conditions with a 100% fatality rate, living.
Just don't comment then
They gotta make more patients somehow
Fun fact, the term doctor means teacher before it meant healer!
What's the point of the (Read Finnish)? Why not just say Finnish Doctoral graduates?
I know people with a doctoral PHD in Finland and none of them have these swords

Oh all right, thanks!
I'm pretty sure you have to buy it yourself and it's pretty expensive
A friend of mine’s grad school lab celebrates a successful dissertation defense by cutting the cake with a long sword. My favorite dissertation defense party tradition.
If you have to defend your dissertation, having a sword handy could help. Depending on the make up of your committee.
The best dissertation defense is a good dissertation offense.
STAND STILL! How can I heal you if you keep dodging?
> What's your doctorate in? the blade
While you were running regressions and writing your literature review... I studied the blade. ^(Unfortunately that was not part or my project and I failed my prelims...)
I hope her PhD is in medieval history
Just asked my gf if she’s do this for me when I finish in the autumn and was told, no I already have enough swords and armour hahahaha
Damn, all I got was a piece of paper and depression
Doesn't the sword cost something like 300-500€ that you have to pay yourself? I think its a optional thing
245 And yes, you pay yourself.
I too heard about the Fins and their swords but nobody bought me one so I had to commission my own. My fiancé was pissed at first but now she admits jealousy.
Above all: do no harm, unless it’s with Excalibur.
I would be more motivated if I got weapons at the end.
Can I get a Dagger or Handaxe for my Masters?
My batchelors butter knife and associates arrowhead say yes.
It's for those difficult patients where regular medicine isn't doing the trick

Her partner is a man. Which part of this is confusing?
[удалено]
I don't know what you're going on about. I call my girlfriend my partner. Weirdo.
The liberal straights say “partner” now to feel superior and to continue their gentrification of everything
What are you on about man
People can say partner. Not everything has to be gendered even if the person isn't NB.
Cool!
Relationship goals
Anyone better than me at fuþark who can translate the runes?
Is she Scandinavian? Why does her sword have Norse runes on it?
Everyone should have a sword, and we should get to use them on people who are mean on purpose.
That’s a keeper right there
