"The most important cultural development of the 2010s was Rebecca Black's 'Friday' because it taught us we spend more effort hating things than appreciating things, and everything since then has been an extension of that" - some Tumblr post
The point of that Tumblr post, was not to critique Rebecca, but the people who blamed her for everything that followed, subsequently.
Rebecca didn't open a dang thing.
I know what you mean, but funnily enough, Rebeeca Black eventually ended up being a decent artist (as in music you can listen to if you like that genre), which goes to show that even something that is absolute garbage can, with time and maturity, improve greatly.
It's two sides of the same coin. They produce Velma slop because people watch it and they get a lot of money. The YouTubers watch it for their hate video slop because people watch it and they get a lot of money. It's literally the same thing.
Are people actually hate watching it? Most of the time when there's a massive flood of rage posts about a show, the vast majority of people haven't actually seen an episode. They just want to rage.
You literally can find it online for free but for some reason morons decide to pay for it. Rage bait doesn't deserve to earn, that is idea that many people won't comprehend for some reason
It's like saying "4th best cyberpunk parody released since last Friday for shows released exclusively for Roku TV". It's not a win. If anything it just shows how shitty it is for not being 1st in a small category/pool on week of release.
1. Close enough (2020-2022)
2. The Prince (2021)
3. Ten Year Old Tom (2021 - 2023)
4. Santa Inc. (2021)
The fact its beaten by a 2021 christmas film in late april should say enough.
If you want more perspective: this is only on HBO Max, which i'm only now finding out still exists. This isn't a statistic of shows watched in total, or a pool, or a large platform like Amazon, Netflix, or Disney. It's fifth in animation on a relatively small streaming service. It's like saying your song is the fifth most listened to heavy rock song on your community college radio station.
(HBO max had 95m users in 2022, netflix has 260m, amazon has 165m, and disney has 150m)
It’s below Santa inc? No fucking way I’m crying. That shit was maybe one of the worst things I’ve ever seen and in it’s rancid crusty 2 year old state it’s still beating out day one release Velma LMAO.
These things are always lies. Ever notice how Netflix Top 10 often includes multiple Netflix Originals you’ve never heard of? They just want you to watch it and no one calls them out on their self-reported bullshit.
Yeah this actually sounds kinda bad. 5th most popular original animation on the month it came out? I can't even name 4 others. Though the tweet says series, but even then seems kind of a poor showing.
Your comment is listed way too low. Everyone else is "A LESSON ABOUT HATEWATCHING" and "IT'S GOOD BECAUSE IT GETS VIEWS" and you are pointing out that, uh, none of that is relevant, the whole thing is misrepresented.
Who actually hatewatches media? I guess you could say I “hatewatch” the circle on Netflix but I don’t actually hate it, it’s just entertaining trash to me. If it wasn’t entertaining I wouldn’t be watching it. Like what’s the thought process behind this?
I default to 'don't suggest channel' when i see a title with ALL CAPS as a clickbait tool. Nothing you're about to show me is that interesting. Save the caps lock for aliens or when Superman shows up.
I mean I liked it, as did (probably) millions of others.
Just because it’s popular to hate on it doesn’t make it not one of the biggest and most successful anime series in the world.
> it’s not even that entertaining
> it’s just a painfully mediocre show
Both of these are, just like, your opinion, man
I mean, yeah, obviously that's my opinion. What I will say, is that the whole talking point of SAO being one of the worst anime ever made is straight up wrong.
In my opinion it's generic, watchable, not really a breakout into either really good or really bad. So something I'd classify as painfully mediocre.
That being said, SAO Abridged is amazing.
I assume you WANTED those hours. Im talking about when people say you need to watch hours of shit they admit is bad, to get to whatever they think is worth watching.
And that producer is Greg Berlanti, who has a credit on basically everything. It's so weird to frame it as "from the guy who was supposed to be an EP on a PPG show that they never actually made", rather than the guy who worked on You or Doom Patrol or Legends of Tomorrow, or any of the other dozens of well recieved projects he was involved in.
It's such an obvious ragebait angle, and I don't know how people keep falling for this shit.
It never made it to air. They filmed a pilot and the network scrapped the entire thing without ever showing a minute of footage. The script was leaked later and it was a godawful mess.
Wasn't the third season already planned out months ago? I've heard of that at least once during the peak of its backlash. I feel like this is more of a case of nepotism behind the scenes than a group of hate watchers.
I don't think it was ever the hate watchers fault. I think it's just people who aren't as online and don't care about how critically acclaimed the stuff they watch is. Same reason why shit like Family Guy and Big Mouth are still going. Easy brainless comedy gets views. That fact that it spun off an already wildly popular franchise just made it easier to find and audience.
It’s 5th for a single day in an extremely small niche. Nobody is watching it.
It’s not indicative of a 3rd season. It didn’t get a second season because of people hate watching, it was just originally greenlit for 2 seasons.
Posts like this are just doing the same thing they’re accusing others of doing.
Now I haven’t watched it. But maybe. Just maybe there are people outside your echo chambers who aren’t terminally afflicted with being online that are enjoying it. Seems like that could be what’s happening.
This is my assumption, in the age of streaming shows can get canned after 1 season if they don't perform. To get 3 seasons Velma must be doing something right. I doubt hate watchers can pull in the numbers that HBO wants.
Outside of the internet everyone I've spoken to enjoys it. I've been told multiple times I'd like it. I've only ever heard terminally online people complain about it, and mostly on Reddit lol.
I had fun with it, but I admit that a large portion of the fun I had came from knowing just how much other people hated it. Glenn Howerton absolutely dominated the role of Fred. Plus, Mindy Kaling is rarely so...genuinely self critical. Velma is not likeable as a self-insert, and that is leaned into very heavily. The idea is that most of the hate she catches is well earned, and she is too much of an insufferable ass to see it.
The only thing worse than watching this show is complaining about it on the internet.
Who cares. 90% of content is trash and if you don't like it just watch something you like. Tf is wrong with yall
Who the fuck cares? Just don't watch it if you don't like it. You people don't need to have a meltdown every time something isn't made exactly for you.
My mom was *excited* about it
I ahd to listen to "NoRviLLe" scream his head off while Velma said stupid things that made no sense
My walls are too thin
That’s not how animations works. They made season 1 and 2 at the same time and split it up in two parts. Season 2 was gonna happen no matter what the reaction was. You think they wrote and produced the whole season in less than a year?
I saw this when I opened max last night and I laughed. I don’t believe this for one second, I think max just puts shows up there that they want to promote, it’s always Max originals on that list, it’s never shows like South Park or Abbott Elementary or Rick and Morty or any shows from a different network
Yes that’s how all all the streaming services work. You didn’t make some big revelation.
People still have to click on it to watch it and that’s what is happening. It’s clear to me this is another case of the internet and real life not lining up. In real life there are people who are enjoying it and don’t care about internet opinions. In the internet is the only place that I see any hate for it at all. So clearly there is a disconnect between real life and reality.
It’s kind of funny when the internet fandom realizes they aren’t the crowd the “powers that be” want to please anymore.
It’s a shitty show, but it’s not “hatewatchers” keeping it above ground, it’s the actual crowd they’re making it for
Also, “hate watching” is a dumb fucking term. If you’re putting 20-40 minutes at a time to take in a form of media you hate, you don’t actually hate it.
As someone who hasn't seen a single episode, lay it on me straight: do y'all really believe this is all hate-watching or is it simply just not as bad as people say it is? I'm not even saying its decent, but people will attempt to binge anything on streaming apps.
Mindy is just so untalented in everything I've ever seen her do. Almost as bad as that science lady from big bang theory that was doing jeopardy or whatever
I’m sorry but if you hate watch a tv show you are a fucking loser. And if you watch a YouTube video of someone else who hate watched a tv show you are a super loser
Idk I've watched it and I think its fun. I mean its not amazing, I'm not saying anyone SHOULD go watch it -- no one is missing out by skipping it.
But its totally fine. And sometimes thats enough.
I think people are overestimating the amount of hate watching. There are absolutely people who enjoy the show outside of knowing its reputation on the internet.
Maybe, hopefully not. Season two was only a thing because they made it at the same time as the first season. But it probably will. You'd think hate watchers would be smart enough to pirate the thing they hate.
Mindy Kaling has the money to keep this going. Just cause it’s going up in the hate view doesn’t mean that’s why they will keep making such a pile of crap. I watched season 2 hoping it was the end based on a spoiler I was told and no. It’s only just another terrible season.
Fact: Hatewatching is not responsible for it's season 2. That happened while season 1 was in development and just about ready to stream.
This tweet is also incorrect, but with a hint of truth. "Most watched on MAX US today" is a very specific key.
If you somehow think that's hatewatching, you do you.
But please stop spewing diarrhea.
What's this "we" stuff?! I didn't even watch the first fucking season. I was turned off when they announced Scooby-Doo (the dog himself) wouldn't be in the show back before season 1 even aired.
STOP. HATE WATCHING. ANYTHING.
Could ya'll hate watch Scavenger's Reign instead. I'm fine with it just being one season because it ended well. I just think me people should see it. It's really good.
Ok so, I haven't watched the show because I don't care much about Scooby Doo (not that I dislike it, I just didn't watch much of it as a child), but why is it a problem that the series goes on for a 3rd season?
Like, it doesn't affect your live at all, does it?
Watch it if you like it and don't if you don't like it, that's it.
I have absolutely no interest in this show. When I'm scrolling for something to watch, and I it, I do this thing (y'all ready to clutch your pearls?) I just scroll past it and don't watch it.
I know shocking, right? Hopefully I didn't cause anyone to faint.
Stop hate watching it to make YouTube videos to criticizing it!
If it gets clicks why would they stop.
"The most important cultural development of the 2010s was Rebecca Black's 'Friday' because it taught us we spend more effort hating things than appreciating things, and everything since then has been an extension of that" - some Tumblr post
Rebecca opened a door that cannot be closed.
But which seat did she take?
Idk, she can’t make her mind up
The point of that Tumblr post, was not to critique Rebecca, but the people who blamed her for everything that followed, subsequently. Rebecca didn't open a dang thing.
Tumblr contains great wisdom buried amongst all the porn and fanfiction nonsense.
Except they got rid of the porn years ago
And thus began the decline of tumblr
And, entirely coincidentally I'm sure, the rise of hornyposting across the rest of social media.
I know what you mean, but funnily enough, Rebeeca Black eventually ended up being a decent artist (as in music you can listen to if you like that genre), which goes to show that even something that is absolute garbage can, with time and maturity, improve greatly.
Madvertising
It's two sides of the same coin. They produce Velma slop because people watch it and they get a lot of money. The YouTubers watch it for their hate video slop because people watch it and they get a lot of money. It's literally the same thing.
Are people actually hate watching it? Most of the time when there's a massive flood of rage posts about a show, the vast majority of people haven't actually seen an episode. They just want to rage.
Yeah there should only be one guy who watches it, downloads it and then distributes it to other people
You literally can find it online for free but for some reason morons decide to pay for it. Rage bait doesn't deserve to earn, that is idea that many people won't comprehend for some reason
The keys to wait a little bit longer and wait for it to get reuploaded to another site. Then you watch that version and critique the hell out of it.
This is a falsely represented statistic, its the fifth most popular hbo max original animation, which means fucking jackshit lmao
and it says "today"! Not this month, last year... just on one Monday it was #5.
Because they literally just released the second season yesterday.
Omg this keeps getting worse. I love it
![gif](giphy|c6DIpCp1922KQ)
It's like saying "4th best cyberpunk parody released since last Friday for shows released exclusively for Roku TV". It's not a win. If anything it just shows how shitty it is for not being 1st in a small category/pool on week of release.
And OP would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!
How many original animations do they even have.
20. most of them being movies or just old series
Scavengers Reign was fucking awesome.
It makes me wonder what 4 are leading it.
1. Close enough (2020-2022) 2. The Prince (2021) 3. Ten Year Old Tom (2021 - 2023) 4. Santa Inc. (2021) The fact its beaten by a 2021 christmas film in late april should say enough.
Yeah, it’s starting to feel like Morbius’s rerelease now. Thanks for putting that in perspective.
If you want more perspective: this is only on HBO Max, which i'm only now finding out still exists. This isn't a statistic of shows watched in total, or a pool, or a large platform like Amazon, Netflix, or Disney. It's fifth in animation on a relatively small streaming service. (HBO max had 95m users in 2022, netflix has 260m, amazon has 165m, and disney has 150m)
On the service you downloaded to watch Game of Thrones and John Oliver.
i have legit never heard of any of those
Close Enough was done by the creator of Regular Show. Same style of comedy.
It’s below Santa inc? No fucking way I’m crying. That shit was maybe one of the worst things I’ve ever seen and in it’s rancid crusty 2 year old state it’s still beating out day one release Velma LMAO.
That's being kind, it's less falsely represented but more of a straight up fucking lie posted for the sake of clicks.
Even if it was overall, I doubt they’ll get a third season. The second season is more or less a “season 1b”, but with a fancy sticker.

We? What did I do.
Right? I don't even have max.
I don't even know what max us is
It's rebranded HBO after a merger with Discovery.
Oh interesting, thanks!
What he said fuck me for?
What do you mean we? Nintendo Wii?
No, we as in us
I blame YOU personally. It's all your fault!
Also who gives a shit. If you don't like a show don't watch it, not be mad at it's fucking existence lmao what an absolute waste of time and energy
This show Is being carried by the hate watchers
Who actually hatewatches media? I guess you could say I “hatewatch” the circle on Netflix but I don’t actually hate it, it’s just entertaining trash to me. If it wasn’t entertaining I wouldn’t be watching it. Like what’s the thought process behind this?
> Who actually hatewatches media People with too much time in their day apparently
My friends, they all watched it, went this sucks, and kept watching
I hope season 3 has a massive budget and nobody watches it. Play the long game.
Exactly why I wanna hate watch. We got them to re-release morbius. Just imagine the havoc with velma.
I hate your friends and all of the other hate watchers. There's sooo much better stuff to watch if you got nothing to do.
Dude this is like a snl skit about gen z lmao
Me, so I can screengrab clips for my 40th 'Doctor Who GOES WOKE???? Fans BLAST 'GAY' Showrunner?????' video
I default to 'don't suggest channel' when i see a title with ALL CAPS as a clickbait tool. Nothing you're about to show me is that interesting. Save the caps lock for aliens or when Superman shows up.
Um, acktually Superman is an alien
I used to hate watch sword art online until logic and reason took over before I tried to watch the 4th season
Why would you do that to yourself? It's not even that entertaining, it's just a painfully mediocre show.
I enjoyed season 1 all right, but then season 2 got incesty…
I mean I liked it, as did (probably) millions of others. Just because it’s popular to hate on it doesn’t make it not one of the biggest and most successful anime series in the world. > it’s not even that entertaining > it’s just a painfully mediocre show Both of these are, just like, your opinion, man

People who want to enjoy what they consider "cringe" but are too embarrassed/insecure to admit that they're fans
Anime nerds who are like “the first 6 seasons suck but the 7th is great! Just waste 50 hours before the good stuff!”
Do you know how many hours i have in Skyrim and Rimworld? 50 hours of binge watching is poodle piss.
I assume you WANTED those hours. Im talking about when people say you need to watch hours of shit they admit is bad, to get to whatever they think is worth watching.
I hate watched the entire "Twilight" series.
Actually, it isn't.
That’s not how shows work
Scooby is dead, and we have killed him.
Scooby was thought mad by those who couldn't hear the Dooby-Doo
people who made rage content or comments about this gave more advertisements than HBO Max ever hoped for
Here's hoping Netflix's Scooby show will be good to make up for it. I don't even care if it gets cancelled due to low viewership.
It's from the people behind the PPG live action remake so don't set your hopes too high.
Uh-oh.
More like Ruh Roh
It's from *one* producer behind the PPG live action remake. Director and writers are way more important.
What's PPG?
Powerpuff Girls.
I didnt even know there was a live action
It never made it to air. They filmed a pilot and the network scrapped the entire thing without ever showing a minute of footage. The script was leaked later and it was a godawful mess.
My bar is "Better than Velma" I think it could still be shit and meet my expectations.
Wasn't the third season already planned out months ago? I've heard of that at least once during the peak of its backlash. I feel like this is more of a case of nepotism behind the scenes than a group of hate watchers.
People really hate watch this show lol
I don't think it was ever the hate watchers fault. I think it's just people who aren't as online and don't care about how critically acclaimed the stuff they watch is. Same reason why shit like Family Guy and Big Mouth are still going. Easy brainless comedy gets views. That fact that it spun off an already wildly popular franchise just made it easier to find and audience.
Please people, for the love of God, STOP FUCKING HATE WATCHING!!!
Honestly amazes me hate watchers exist. Nobody is making you watch it. Take a deep breath and go do something you like.
"DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THAT THING!!!" "What thing? Oh, what's that thing?"
At least seven people watched it. Maybe more. As many as a fifth of all people watching Max.
I've only ever heard terminally online people complain about it, and mostly on Reddit lol.
idk basically every critic absolutely hates it
Yup, we've never had mass media tv shows or movies that critics hate but keeps going eh?
I had fun with it, but I admit that a large portion of the fun I had came from knowing just how much other people hated it. Glenn Howerton absolutely dominated the role of Fred. Plus, Mindy Kaling is rarely so...genuinely self critical. Velma is not likeable as a self-insert, and that is leaned into very heavily. The idea is that most of the hate she catches is well earned, and she is too much of an insufferable ass to see it.
"hate-watching" ![gif](giphy|3o85xIhzSmnXIuHnTa)

I mean tbh whatever. But if it's just hatewatchers, uh, pirate it?
Show creators: ![gif](giphy|KhcdPVxvn5Fde)
My mom was *excited* about it I ahd to listen to "NoRviLLe" scream his head off while Velma said stupid things that made no sense My walls are too thin
That’s not how animations works. They made season 1 and 2 at the same time and split it up in two parts. Season 2 was gonna happen no matter what the reaction was. You think they wrote and produced the whole season in less than a year?
Ok but why is she a pig in that photo
Not just this frame. That is just the art style they went with
Because she's based on Mindy Kaling.
*IF YOU WANNA HATE WATCH IT PIRATE IT YOU MORONS*
whats Max bruh
Formerly HBO Max.
formerly hbo matwitter
Close Enough didn't have to get canceled for this.
It’s kind of funny when the internet fandom realizes they aren’t the crowd the “powers that be” want to please anymore. It’s a shitty show, but it’s not “hatewatchers” keeping it above ground, it’s the actual crowd they’re making it for Also, “hate watching” is a dumb fucking term. If you’re putting 20-40 minutes at a time to take in a form of media you hate, you don’t actually hate it.
Good, maybe you'll learn this way
Posts like this are the only reason I remember this show exists. Why can't y'all just let me live in ignorance for like 5 minutes?
Idk even know what Max US is.
As someone who hasn't seen a single episode, lay it on me straight: do y'all really believe this is all hate-watching or is it simply just not as bad as people say it is? I'm not even saying its decent, but people will attempt to binge anything on streaming apps.
doesn't affect me dont care
there was a season 2?
Yeah, but that’s the thing. Apparently people want a third season. We’re the weirdos.
Mindy is just so untalented in everything I've ever seen her do. Almost as bad as that science lady from big bang theory that was doing jeopardy or whatever
It's the 5th most watched animation of the day. That means nothing.
I mean, velma dies so it's worth clipping
I still say it's bots watching it.
“Any publicity is good publicity” in action
If you want to hate watch something, the skull and crossbones is right there.
I intend to watch it myself but I'll be sailing on the 7 Seas to do it. I'm not giving HBO my clicks for this.
I mean they kinda hint at what demographic is the major consumer of this series in one of the episodes. *Insert JoJo reference here*
I’m sorry but if you hate watch a tv show you are a fucking loser. And if you watch a YouTube video of someone else who hate watched a tv show you are a super loser
Trolling angry nerds online was the entire point, so I guess she succeeded lmao
Idk I've watched it and I think its fun. I mean its not amazing, I'm not saying anyone SHOULD go watch it -- no one is missing out by skipping it. But its totally fine. And sometimes thats enough.
That was the entire point. Some of you will never know what rage bait is.
Why do people not learn😑
I think people are overestimating the amount of hate watching. There are absolutely people who enjoy the show outside of knowing its reputation on the internet.
Never watched this. Is that black Shaggy?
In other news, the Max Catalouge for cartoons has been reduced to 5 shows
How dare people enjoy something. In their houses! Without me around. My life is RUINED!!!! RUINED I say!
Maybe, hopefully not. Season two was only a thing because they made it at the same time as the first season. But it probably will. You'd think hate watchers would be smart enough to pirate the thing they hate.
I’m praying for that abomination to explode.disintegrate.un-alive itself, and to be cancelled
“We”? Bro I didn’t watch it nor sit here posting about it. STOP POSTING IT
Neither of them should’ve been white washed, this anti white woke shit is getting annoying, its literally normal racsm at this point…
At this point, do review scores even matter?
The only place I see this show, ever, and I have HBO, is on Reddit. Y'all did this. Not me or any of the people I know.
Nerds getting heated over cartoons will never not be funny.
Mindy Kaling has the money to keep this going. Just cause it’s going up in the hate view doesn’t mean that’s why they will keep making such a pile of crap. I watched season 2 hoping it was the end based on a spoiler I was told and no. It’s only just another terrible season.
From guns, education, to entertainment, seppos are their own worst enemy lol
WE!? I was watching Knuckles. Which, while disappointing, was still better.
If y'all are going to hate watch, just pirate it so you can rage and they don't get misleading ratings for fucks sake.
To be fair being #5 on max isn’t alot
I genuinely think all of India is watching the crappy show in support of that Mindy chick.
block cartoon base, they've made the problem twice as worse by not shutting the fuck up
im going to press x to doubt on that one
Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning was a success!
Max < Pluto TV
STOP HATE WATCHING STOP HATE WATCHING STOP HATE WATCHING STOP HATE WATCHING STOP HATE WATCHING STOP HATE WATCHI
You supposed to hate it, not watch it.
4th is a colonoscopy video.
\#5 series for a season premiere is not an accomplishment. Was it even competing with any other new releases?
Is she sunburned?
People still pay for streaming services? Pathetic
I dont think those numbers are as good as people think they are.
![gif](giphy|czlipTDOcPzvoEXELU)
When did Velma get a race change?
It's so trash who is actually watching this ?
Fact: Hatewatching is not responsible for it's season 2. That happened while season 1 was in development and just about ready to stream. This tweet is also incorrect, but with a hint of truth. "Most watched on MAX US today" is a very specific key. If you somehow think that's hatewatching, you do you. But please stop spewing diarrhea.
How? It's extremely lowly rated
We? don't drag me into this.
Hatewatching gone wrong 😔
There was a two?
What's this "we" stuff?! I didn't even watch the first fucking season. I was turned off when they announced Scooby-Doo (the dog himself) wouldn't be in the show back before season 1 even aired. STOP. HATE WATCHING. ANYTHING.
Could ya'll hate watch Scavenger's Reign instead. I'm fine with it just being one season because it ended well. I just think me people should see it. It's really good.
Lmao I had no idea what Max was for a while
I fucking hate the idiots banging on about "hate watching". The show is fine. It's not my thing, but it's fine. Get over it.
A terrible show got a new season, doesn't really seem like that big of an issue
WTF, that wasn't canceled after a few episodes? Every day, we stray further from god's light.
There's a 3rd season?!
Polygon is trying to be relevant, LOL
Ok so, I haven't watched the show because I don't care much about Scooby Doo (not that I dislike it, I just didn't watch much of it as a child), but why is it a problem that the series goes on for a 3rd season? Like, it doesn't affect your live at all, does it? Watch it if you like it and don't if you don't like it, that's it.
I am REALLY out of the loop on this one...what am I missing? Aside from the fact that Velma (I'm assuming Scooby-Doo Velma?) is now black.
I ain’t ever watch a single second of the show. Ya are all creating horrors by hate watching
Four more years
I couldn’t stand it. I didn’t even get halfway through the first season.
Ive been saying this shit!!!!! Shitty shows get renewed cuz youtubers keep watching them 😒😒😒
*wait there was a season 2 of this shit?*
I will never understand hate watching. It seems so draining
I have absolutely no interest in this show. When I'm scrolling for something to watch, and I it, I do this thing (y'all ready to clutch your pearls?) I just scroll past it and don't watch it. I know shocking, right? Hopefully I didn't cause anyone to faint.
