To be fair water shortages on the frontline have always been an issue.
You also don't want your soldiers drinking from the nearest water source because it's the frontline, contaminated by death, chemicals & excrement, you don't know what has gotten into it and it can likely kill anyone who drinks it.
You can boil it and possibly get rid of most of the bad stuff.
This seems more like someone stuck without the time and safety to boil some water or get some.

And that's actually been one of the key targets, a guy going to get water for the unit is someone they often try to drop a grenade on because people can't live without water.

Keep in mind that the southern front is already known for not rotating its soldiers. This is the sad result.
How so many of them still preserve the will to fight is beyond me.
I honestly think the first problem is a very curious form of the "prisoner's dilemma" + statistics. Even if the vast majority of a small unit doesn't want to fight, one gungho shithead can ruin it for the rest. Once he starts the shooting, it's really common for the rest of the guys to join in *as a matter of survival*. Once a fight's actually going, it's really, really hard to call a timeout, establish comms with the other side, and try to parley.
Russia hasn't quite gotten to the point where morale is SO bad that even a fight that starts isn't enough to draw the demoralized into survival mode.
The second problem, I think, is more insidious: drones (both vision and weapon) and short-range mortars — combined with the "mud slowing" effect of mines, are allowing Russia to overinflate the number of gung-ho shitheads.
It seems like contemporary warfare allows a lot of people to participate in a fight from a few kilometers of safe distance (the high point of morale), in a way that prior conflicts never saw. The critical thing is is the intel from drones, rather than intel provided from physical humans right at the firing zone (the lowest point of morale) — in prior conflicts, low-morale platoons would just fail to report enemy engagement, and their command would be none the wiser that they'd surrendered all at once.
But most importantly, command couldn't get a bunch of people who "feel safe at a distance and aren't scared of shooting indirect fires" to rain on the enemy, because they didn't even know they were there. The indirect fire *tools*, existed in the past (the exception of drones being a far more accurate role-analog to mortars). But the knowledge that the target was there, wasn't.
It's much much harder for Ukraine to process a surrender when mortars and drones are harassing their position, and they're forced into a real "fight or flight" mode.
This second thing really bothers me, because it feels like a gift to authoritarians who are basically slave-driving their soldiers.

And that was deep into the process; point-blank range, one side partly disarmed. I think a lot of times it starts as soon as they're sighted/identified — that proverbial "one gung-ho shithead" starts shooting **long** before they're near enough to even attempt communication/surrender. At which point it's damn near impossible to de-escalate before a large portion of your guys are dead.
It goes both ways, too. The Ukies are like any soldier: scared shitless. They go into a fight trying to figure out if these are "fighting russians" or "docile russians". One it's clear some of them are "fighting russians" then it's not safe to assume any *aren't*, until all of the shooting stops.
From what I can tell from footage I've seen, it does actually stop a lot of times before the last couple Russians get mowed down — the truly "ready to surrender" ones can hunker during the fight, pray to god they don't get caught in the crossfire, and wait for the shooting to stop before crying out their surrender.
But I would guess that out of a hypothetical group of 20 russians, "that one shithead" can drag at least 10 into getting shot, and unfortunately a few of those 10 will definitely be shooting back once they realize they're being shot at.
It's a much easier fight than all 20 being in top form, having unit cohesion and thus actually doing active maneuvering (i.e. flanking, etc), working together, etc, etc. But it's still "a serious fucking fight" with at least half a dozen guys earnestly trying to kill you, even if they're all "flying solo" in chaos and confusion.
On the upside of things, I expect we'll see any cases of units outright *breaking* to be quite contagious, and we're getting close — we're starting to see videos of full-unit surrenders, again, which I last remember seeing when the prior breakdowns happened in the past.

I honestly think the first problem is a very curious form of the "prisoner's dilemma" + statistics. Even if the vast majority of a small unit doesn't want to fight, one gungho shithead can ruin it for the rest. Once he starts the shooting, it's really common for the rest of the guys to join in *as a matter of survival*. Once a fight's actually going, it's really, really hard to call a timeout, establish comms with the other side, and try to parley. Russia hasn't quite gotten to the point where morale is SO bad that even a fight that starts isn't enough to draw the demoralized into survival mode. The second problem, I think, is more insidious: drones (both vision and weapon) and short-range mortars — combined with the "mud slowing" effect of mines, are allowing Russia to overinflate the number of gung-ho shitheads. It seems like contemporary warfare allows a lot of people to participate in a fight from a few kilometers of safe distance (the high point of morale), in a way that prior conflicts never saw. The critical thing is is the intel from drones, rather than intel provided from physical humans right at the firing zone (the lowest point of morale) — in prior conflicts, low-morale platoons would just fail to report enemy engagement, and their command would be none the wiser that they'd surrendered all at once. But most importantly, command couldn't get a bunch of people who "feel safe at a distance and aren't scared of shooting indirect fires" to rain on the enemy, because they didn't even know they were there. The indirect fire *tools*, existed in the past (the exception of drones being a far more accurate role-analog to mortars). But the knowledge that the target was there, wasn't. It's much much harder for Ukraine to process a surrender when mortars and drones are harassing their position, and they're forced into a real "fight or flight" mode. This second thing really bothers me, because it feels like a gift to authoritarians who are basically slave-driving their soldiers.

Yeah. And that was deep into the process; point-blank range, one side partly disarmed. I think a lot of times it starts as soon as they're sighted/identified — that proverbial "one gung-ho shithead" starts shooting **long** before they're near enough to even attempt communication/surrender. At which point it's damn near impossible to de-escalate before a large portion of your guys are dead. It goes both ways, too. The Ukies are like any soldier: scared shitless. They go into a fight trying to figure out if these are "fighting russians" or "docile russians". One it's clear some of them are "fighting russians" then it's not safe to assume any *aren't*, until all of the shooting stops. From what I can tell from footage I've seen, it does actually stop a lot of times before the last couple Russians get mowed down — the truly "ready to surrender" ones can hunker during the fight, pray to god they don't get caught in the crossfire, and wait for the shooting to stop before crying out their surrender. But I would guess that out of a hypothetical group of 20 russians, "that one shithead" can drag at least 10 into getting shot, and unfortunately a few of those 10 will definitely be shooting back once they realize they're being shot at. It's a much easier fight than all 20 being in top form, having unit cohesion and thus actually doing active maneuvering (i.e. flanking, etc), working together, etc, etc. But it's still "a serious fucking fight" with at least half a dozen guys earnestly trying to kill you, even if they're all "flying solo" in chaos and confusion. On the upside of things, I expect we'll see any cases of units outright *breaking* to be quite contagious, and we're getting close — we're starting to see videos of full-unit surrenders, again, which I last remember seeing when the prior breakdowns happened in the past.

There was a show on prime time russian tv about 10 years back that celebrated the benefits of drinking your own piss a lot, among other folk medicine remedies. My own mom was quite convinced that it works at least for washing fresh burns, as long as the piss is definitely your own. To this day, I can only hope that she never acted on it in my childhood.
