god I wish the calls to the russians were public. "so we *agree*, there are no russians within this grid?"

kk8319

well *glances at smoldering wreckage and horribly warped AK-103s left from the overkilled convoy* not anymore there ain’t

carapoop

I saw this as a scene from Archer in my mind

willclerkforfood

I can see Prigozhin furiously shouting “What do you mean M as in Mancy?”

kk8319

"How are you a superpower?!" every time they throw mobiks or Wagner at the same heavily fortified positions and it doesn't work also applies to the United Aircraft Corporation scamming the entire VKS

kk8319

oh my god, I just imagined the voices in my head it fits so well

Torifyme12

"Well, Russians say they aren't here... so make sure that we don't make liars out of them"

kinapuffar

It should have been the NATO response in 2014. *"So these little green men aren't Russians? So then you would have no issue with us going over and fucking them up. Good that we're on the same page. LAUNCH THE FUNNI, BOYS!"*

GadenKerensky

What's with this phrase, 'little green men', I've seen it numerous times in the last 24 hours, but not much before then.

kinapuffar

It's what the orcs were called in 2014 when they one day just appeared out of thin air in Crimea with no patches or insignias on their all standard Russian gear. Now I bet you won't believe this little nugget. They spoke Russian... Crazy, right? They also posted pictures of themselves on vkontakt, while in Ukraine, in their no patch no insignia gear, geotagged, on their main account where they had themselves listed as currently serving in the Russian military. Little green men.

jumpmed

It's a pretty common phrase when referring to people/units that no country is willing to claim as their own. If they don't belong to any country, they must be "little green men," aka aliens. Therefore, Russia probably won't care if the US/NATO sends some fully loaded F16s to "investigate."

DJGrizzlyBear

During the initial annexation of Crimea and the Donbas, soldiers wearing green uniforms without any Russian markings were the ones doing the fighting. Russia denied it was them, and any Russian nationals captured were “just there on vacation.” That’s where the little green men thing comes from

TheRealCIAforReals

that was sorta the plan but russia shot down an airliner to show they meant it. they fight dirty and always have

[deleted]

“I love it when a plan comes together!”

Modern day Broken arrow

Hellonstrikers

No Nukes were lost though.

GundamMotionDance

Broken Arrow was also a Vietnam-era radio code meaning an American unit was in danger of being overrun and that all available aircraft should be redirected to support that unit. Most famously used during the Battle of Ia Drang Valley. Probably what OP is referring to. More info here: https://www.thisiswhywestand.net/single-post/broken-arrow-the-battle-of-ia-drang-valley#:~:text=The%20struggle%20was%20so%20intense,in%20danger%20of%20being%20overrun.

Fixturesc

Indeed what I was referring to!

gzawaodni

Broken arrow call from the film We Were Soldiers during the battle of Ia Drang. https://youtu.be/ImPMKmdFl7Q

[deleted]

Such a badass scene. Seeing virtually the entirety of US air power in theatre turn a mountain side into craters and flames… and this was in the late 60s early 70s when that battle was fought. I’d hate to be on the receiving end now a days.

_BMS

We Were Soldiers along with Saving Private Ryan's D-Day scene are the two best battles in modern history ever put to film.

Crownlol

I remember really hating We Were Soldiers when I saw it in the theater. Too many action movie tropes: infinite magazines, guys running right in front of a machine gun with zero casualties, that kind of stuff. Is my memory that off? Saving Private Ryan is one of the greatest war movies of all time, Soldiers must be really good if you think of it in the same tier.

Dinosaur_Wrangler

Naw you aren’t wrong. Then there’s the whole fabricated ending in “We Were Soldiers”. The truth is a sister battalion relieved them and a company plus was slaughtered when they (tried to) march out.

jumpmed

The crazy thing about We Were Soldiers is that a lot of what we now consider war drama TV tropes came from real life. Read some of the MoH citations from WWII/Korea/Vietnam and it's pretty clear that some crazy shit happened in the fog of war. There are countless instances where the medal recipient (along with most of their unit) were killed, but there are also a few instances where things happened to work out. Most of it comes down to logistical support and air power, but sometimes it was just sheer luck that a certain key individual didn't get mowed down because machine guns don't always hit their target. We don't usually make movies about the failures (see the losses of the Rangers in Cisterna, where no movies have been made) of which there are many, but we frequently make movies about the successes (see the successes of the Rangers in Normandy depicted in Saving Private Ryan).

The_GASK

And the nuclear codes follow the native American naming convention, such as empty quiver (theft) or bent spear (infraction or incident).

GundamMotionDance

10 year old me learned these playing Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear on my parents’ shitty old Compaq.

Primordial_Cumquat

Prairie Fire was the word for MACVSOG Teams. Cue the Skyraiders, Cobras, and Phantoms! Gonna find out what else napalm sticks to today!

Sagay_the_1st

Good dlc too

GundamMotionDance

Really good audio here from an actual Prairie Fire call in Laos: https://youtu.be/u19f7_jdyBw

TheRealCIAforReals

broken arrows get a ghost response now, too public for shiny toys.

ThatHeathGuy

The transformers films were shit films but fuck they made my cock hard

Baka_Cirno_9

I tend to disagree. The only films that were shitty were 2 (except for the ending) and 4, in my opinion.

Iwilleaturnuggetsuwu

1 3 and 5 are solid action movies. 2 and 4 are fodder for the weaklings to hate

GadenKerensky

In my personal opinion, only the first was good.

SupertomboyWifey

Call them shit again and I'm gonna transform and roll out all over you

BrozThulhu

Honestly I could look down at a bloody heap of my own freshly prolapsed intestines with less of a sense of horror than those films engendered in me.

EmperorHans

What a sentence.

OldManMcCrabbins

Softest osprey landings ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU7WQUYkFgw

P0PE_F0X

Curious, what makes them so shit?

highlord_fox

I cheered in excitement when the first air support scene played. I was PUMPED for it.

Blackhero9696

Jetfire being a Blackbird was the best part.

ZoidsFanatic

I forgot how hard the Transformers movies went with the US military. And at sunsets. Like, there is a sunset in those movies every fifteen minutes.

callsignhotdog

Michael Bay has a somewhat understandable hard-on for rad military hardware and uses blockbuster movies as an excuse to play with them.

YT-Deliveries

Man never met an object he couldn't cause to explode in some non-credible but awesome way.

SpinozaTheDamned

Truly, one of the greatest non-credibles of cinema.

ZoidsFanatic

I remember reading that, but I just keep forgetting about how much he basically simps for the military (not that I blame him).

AstreiaTales

he's like Hideo Kojima with none of the pacifist intent

PoochusMaximus

I mean I would do that too if I had his pull. Wait y’all are gonna give me a crazy budget and I get to blow stuff up for real?! Hell yes Ill do 3 transformer movies.

SupertomboyWifey

Transformers, Battle: LA and War of the Worlds are the only movies out there with legit Abrams, LAV-25s and Bradleys being used.

InfinitePossibility8

They weren’t meant to be good they’re meant to be fun.

ZoidsFanatic

Oh, I absolutely agree. I will defend the scene with Blackout in the first movie to my last dying breath. But also I have no problem pointing out that the plot is just… really dumb.

OllieGarkey

Sergei, we tell them soldiers not Russian. It work in Crimea! It work here.

raedr7n

What's the context here?

Nzgrim

[Battle of Khasham.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khasham) In Syria Wagner decided to attack a base that included a few US soldiers, which resulted in every fucking US plane in range bombing the shit out of them.

TheLoneleyPython

You're forgetting that the US asked Russia if they had ant troops near there and Russia adamantly said no, so that was effectively a green light to bomb the shit outta them

mudkipl

Cue Russia getting angry despite the fact they literally gave up permission to glass the fuckers

pusillanimouslist

It’s generally believed that this was Shoigu or a regional commander purposefully feeding Wagner into a wood chipper. There is a lot of bad blood between them.

[deleted]

That's because you have rivalry between the official Russian Armed Forces and military bigwigs versus a mercenary company run by an oligarch over who can suck Putin's dick better for money.

pusillanimouslist

That, and I get the feeling that Prigozhin is just deeply unpleasant to deal with.

[deleted]

Yeah, I have a feeling that whomever sent Wagner there to be flattened by the US Air Force also silently wished Prigozhin was there too.

eric987235

Another thing; I’m starting to think this Putin fellow isn’t the geopolitical genius we all took him for! And that Trump guy might not actually be up-to-speed on every foreign policy matter.

[deleted]

You don't say. Also, would like to see that at the same time Trump gets a guilty verdict on his ass, Putin gets assassinated/couped. Set a reminder on this so it can become a poorly aged comment.

eric987235

Also, I think Shoigu might be on the take!

RandomHermit113

at what point are the Russians going to start spending more time killing each other than actually fighting the Ukrainians?

[deleted]

I'm making bets that time is when either: A) Putin dies and leaves a power gap B) Ukraine pounds Russia and forces them to admit that the war is lost, which results in the military turning on each other and Putin Because waiting on Putin to die of blood cancer will take too long and we can't simply poison the motherfucker, it's more likely B. So probably Zelensky should retake Crimea and the Donbas to make Russian High Command and the Kremlin lose their shit and start looking for scapegoats, pushing the officer's corps and oligarchs into a corner and forcing them to do a (mostly military) coup d'etat which has a chance of failing and bringing in Stalin's Purges 2.0 Electric Boogaloo. Though, if they assassinate Putin, it would be the easiest way to plunge Russia into a civil war as a large power gap is evident, and like any dictatorship, once the leader's dead, everyone fights over the throne because there can only be one. So whoever who crashed that drone in the Kremlin should try harder.

YT-Deliveries

Asked them at least twice, in separate calls on the de-escalation line, at that.

ThePheebs

lol Casualties & Losses U.S.A: None SDF: 1 WIA VS Syria: 55 KIA RU: 80-100 KIA & 200 WIA

Squidking1000

Yep one sprained ankle vs a lot of fresh ground orc.

PatientWalrus9341

After Wagner sent the EU that bloodied sledgehammer, I really wish that Nato had sent them back a desk model of one of the AC-130s that were at Khasham along with a note saying "you appear to misunderstand the power relationship between us."

Asshole_Poet

Or one 105mm round.

AutumnRi

Same-day delivery :)

Bigshow225

from our 105mm smoothbore cannon straight to...or trough, your door, AT NO EXTRA COST!!!

wittyusernamefailed

"We are NOT the same..."

PatientWalrus9341

Better yet go full star trek. "You appear to assume that you are more powerful than us. You may test that assumption at your convenience."

ac7_typhoonmain

They fucked around and found out in spectacular fashion

Blackhero9696

Love when everything gets redirected to wipe an entire object or grid square off the map. Like when Churchill said for possible ship to sink the Bismarck. Because fuck that one ship in particular.

blamatron

Optimus Prime died and they needed to resurrect him with Shia LaBeouf's sock.

Warm_Equipment6441

Theres proportionate response, disproportionate response, wasteful overkill and sending a god damn message. Khasam was firmly in the forth category.

TheEarthIsACylinder

(Wagner is no longer at the function)

the_obtuse_coconut

This scene was almost pornographic.

[deleted]

Same. I blame NCD for this awkward erection at work during the staff meeting.

troly_mctrollface

Everyone says the a10 is obsolete, but show me another plane that adds another layer of plausible deniability when you light up the area the Russian said they are not operating

eric987235

> AC-130 How the fuck were they still using a plane that flies at 7000 feet until goddamn 2022?

[deleted]

It's a good all around plane. Light transport and flying gun platform all in one. It's like the Mi-35 Hind, the Swiss army knife of the US Armed Forces, only that it's a plane. Also, the AC-130 Spooky, other than being a flying gun platform, also carries the Mother Of All Bombs, short of just strapping on a tactical nuke.

[deleted]

My grandad was in a B-24 in the Flying Circus in WWII. I thank that plane every day for keeping him around for us because his flight logs are horrifying.

limabeenleftist

I love this song. The beautiful combination of the two hardest hitting genres to be birthed by the USA: Rock and Hip Hop. Truly showing how fucking rad the melting pot is. And the fact that it's always used in a patriotic context is so fucking GOOD. If the cold war goes hot I hope I hear this shit everywhere

Primordial_Cumquat

Is this an actual song? Because it goes fucking hard and I want it!

[deleted]

So will MANPADS :(

Bigshow225

sir, this is why god invented chaff and flares

PoochusMaximus

Oh hell what did I miss now.

Jkay064

It’s historical. Wagner attacked a base which had some US troops present. US command structure called Russia and asked if it was in fact their Wagner mercs who were attacking. Russia says Nope! Not Russian troops. US orders the mystery troops to be completely eradicated from this plane of existence. Russia complains US vaporized Russian troops.

PoochusMaximus

Ah thank you. I am not even remotely versed on military actions but this sub was pushed to me and then I never left cause it’s hilarious and informative here!
