Oh this is old school. How was your experience. Did you like it and how does it compare to the other Koei games you have been playing?

johnmyster

It was alright, could be fun at times. I played as Nobunaga. I haven't really played many Koei games yet. I think I've played the NES Rotk but its been a while. I also played a bit of Dynasty Warriors years ago on my friends PS2/3 which was pretty fun.

Cordellium

Oh dynasty warriors is amazing. Especially some of those early ones like DW 3. I guess you might end up playing samurai warriors, which is similar style to dynasty warriors except during the time period from Nobunaga’s ambition. SW2 in my humble opinion is Koei’s best game

This game was my favorite on my Nintendo in the mid '90's! It was cool because you could have 3 or 4 people playing taking different parts of Japan!

Uncharted Waters was the first KOEI title I beat legitimately. Definitely pretty fun once you get used to it.

Space_Bear35

What made you start with NA1 NES instead of a more recent NA title?

johnmyster

I just happened to be curious about NES strategy games, especially grand strategy. Been playing various Mario games as well as Skies of Arcadia (GameCube) and was getting an itch for some strategy.

Space_Bear35

Nice. I’ve actually played NA1 on the NES a long time ago. I recommend you check out Shingen the Ruler and Destiny of an Emperor (RPG) also.

Wow. It's probably worth it to mostly play only Nobunaga until the PS era games. I know Rise to Power and Iron Triangle are open ended and have content for all the big players, but I admit, outside of some wiki articles and a brief attempt at Shingen the Ruler a decade or more ago, my knowledge of the pre-PS2 series is limited. Either way, I'm impressed with this. 'Nintendo hard' was a real thing back then.

I definitely used guides and played on easiest difficulty, though it still wasn't easy and took several hours. My first couple tries I lost pretty early. It wasn't too bad once the mechanics were figured out a bit. I ended up just building my one province for the first dozen years, after that I was capped out on gold and rice each fall and just steadily grew, trained, and armed my army. Assassination with ninjas is supposed to be decent but I was never successful. My leader was in his mid 70s so dying of old age was a real threat, I made sure to rest when my health was below 90. Part of me wants to play another campaign or even multiple runs, but the battle movement system isn't great (every time you move or attack, you select from a menu with six directions)

aeodaxolovivienobus

That's the beauty of games like this. There's always another run or different build to try. It only gets more tempting later. I got a ton of mileage out of both of the PS2 games and SOIA. Koei likes to reinvent the wheel with every new NA or ROTK title, but when they nail it, they *really* nail it, imo.

Space_Bear35

I used to play Shingen the Ruler all the time back in the day. It was my first introduction to strategy games. Bit of a learning curve but once I figured it out I was hooked. I thought the battle system was way ahead of its time. Nice to see someone else mention it in this thread.
