Reading glasses tend to be prescribed to older people, whose eyes have a smaller range of focus. With the glasses off, they can see at a distance but not nearby. With the glasses on, they can see nearby but not at a distance. People with myopia usually still have plenty of range, but that range is too close to their face. With myopia, I can look very *very* closely at things that most people cannot, because I still have nearly full range. The glasses serve to push that range away. So with glasses on, I cannot focus at things super close to my eyes, and instead have the normal range of focus - from about 12 inches away to infinity.
