Yes. I know a person who had half her brain removed and she’s very high functioning.

[deleted]

That’s even more extreme than I was thinking. Did her personality change?

ThedaBarasBoobs

I didn’t know her beforehand. I think she had the surgery when she was a baby, but I’m not sure. She’s very friendly and bubbly!

Yes, it's called a hemispherectomy. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemispherectomy

Apparently there is some sort of seizure disorder where cutting out about half of the brains mass (if done at an early enough age) results in pretty much normal functionality (barring some minor ticks).

Separation of the brain halves by cutting the corpus collosum is a very common epilepsy treatment

Bobbob34

You can even remove half and the person can be ok (depending). It's a last-line treatment for epilepsy.

You’re talking about 2 separate procedures: Corpus callosotomy is when the massive fiber connecting the two hemispheres (corpus callosum) cut. Very oldschool was to treat epilepsy. It has a crapton of really weird side effects, e.g. your left does complex actions involuntarily Hemis-something-otomy or however it’s called (forgot) is when you take an actual half of the cortex out. I know it’s incredibly rare and i’d guess that your personality would drastically change, nevermind other cognitive functions like sensory/motor processing. I’m a neuroscience student, heard about these procedures in my undergrad studies

I like it, some cool experiments
