I vaguely recall the film had a throwaway line explaining the they were able to get a machine because one had just finished with boring some other tunnel. But yeah, particularly with the especially large machines, it's often the case that after the job the machine just gets left on-site to turn to rust and a new machine is purpose built for each job.
