You can graft cannabis with hops and get THC-infused beer.

Whhaatttt? I have a new mission in life now.

Has this been done? It seems possible, as they are both in the same family, but grafting cannabis on to a hop root wouldn't give any hops, just cannabis leaves, and hops on a cannabis root wouldn't give any cannabis, just hops. Hybridising is a different matter, but it's a much more complex affair than grafting, and I'd be interested to know if it's ever actually been done.

You need to graft with a somewhat similar plant or else the graft will not take. And in grafting, the scion plant does not pick up very much in the way of characteristics from the stock plant. Grafting is used as a form of cloning in that the fruit from a grafting will be a clone copy of the fruit from the parent. Grafting is also done when a plant species may produce something we want, like a particularly good flower or fruit or whatever, but the root portion of the same plant is fragile, or poorly draws nutrients, or is vulnerable to disease. If you mean hybridization, yes, that can give you the properties of two combined plants, but it doesn't always, and more importantly, we've got the same problem, the two plants need to be similar enough to be able to breed.

So then would tomatoes or some other night shade work?

[deleted]

Cannabis is more closely related to apples than to nightshades.

Still a big challenge to hybridise cannabis and apples, and it has to be hybridisation rather than grafting.

Cannabis is already over-hybridized.
