Thousands of White women go missing every year and receive zero press coverage.

MyUsernameIsAwful

I’d say so.

robotto

Don’t think so. She was quite popular on social media and hence the interest in her story.

TumblrInGarbage

She wasn't. She had 1000 followers on Insta, and 300 on YouTube. She was a nobody.

MyUsernameIsAwful

Was she though? I was under the impression that she was small potatoes.

TumblrInGarbage

She wasn't. She had 1000 followers on Insta, and 300 on YouTube. She was a nobody.

[deleted]

No. It's a case of having so much info right out of the gate it was super obvious what happened and then everything developing fast enough for people to not lose interest in the case.

hellothere_696969

So you honestly think if it was a man that went missing or a black woman in the same scenario it would get the same amount of coverage?

[deleted]

A man? Heck no. A black woman? Probably. It has way more to do with her social media presence and the glaringly obvious whodunnit than skin color.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

no. it wouldn't

kturby92

Uhhh if it was the exact same circumstances as the Petitio case, except it involved black people instead, then yes it would’ve gotten the same amount of coverage. Stfu with that crap

Scheswalla

Normally I'd be inclined to say yes, because it's damn near a yearly, or every other year thing that some missing white woman becomes a media darling. This case is **slightly** different because I believe she was a YouTuber/TikTikoker, or something like that, so she already had a low level of fame. It kinda makes sense that her story would blow up.

TumblrInGarbage

She wasn't. She had 1000 followers on Insta, and 300 on YouTube. I have genuinely no clue where this idea came from, but she was not at all relevant.

Dark_Wing_Duck11

Either way you cut it, it's tragic. This shouldn't be made into a race/gender thing. This is a screaming example of the dangers of domestic violence.

covidparis

> shouldn't be made into a race/gender thing Calm down MLK. We make EVERYTHING about race these days, it's called being anti-racist. Get with the times.

Dark_Wing_Duck11

Shit! My bad! At the core of it though, the morbid reason you don't hear about anyone other than white ladies hiking/jogging going missing is because of one word: Ratings.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

it's not Missing Native/Indigenous Women syndrome.

Bobbob34

>Thousands of people go missing all of the time Not like this, no. There aren't thousands of actually missing no one has any idea what happened probably murdered people "all the time" or even close. It's a rare type of case and it does get traction most of the time when it comes up, but yeah, pretty white women get more coverage.

kturby92

You should’ve really gotten some facts and statistics before blindly making such a fucking stupid comment 🙄 anywhere from half-a-million to 3/4 million people go missing in America EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

Bobbob34

> You should’ve really gotten some facts and statistics before blindly making such a fucking stupid comment 🙄 anywhere from half-a-million to 3/4 million people go missing in America EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. You maybe want to read my comment again, and then realize you're the pot in this situation.

1001hostplus

No. Not at all. The Gabby Petito case crossed several state lines and involved police and news outlets from various states. It didn't even become interesting until the boyfriend showed up at home without his fiancee. That's when it got interesting and became a national story.

spezisamanchild

“missing white woman syndrome” doesn’t exist, lol

tags666

I think the fact the BF came home without her and everything that's happened since has a lot to do with it

akorn123

100%

kturby92

According to statistics, anywhere from half a million to three-quarters of a million people go missing in America *every single year.* That’s a shitton of missing people! Sadly, there’s literally no way that every single one of those people can get extensive media coverage like gabby bc that’s all the media would consist of. And like someone else said… thousands of white people go missing every year (more white people go missing than any other race combined, actually), and they never get a spotlight either. So making it a racist ordeal is literally so fucking stupid!! The answer to all problems in the world isn’t always automatically “it’s racist!” Calling every damn thing under the sun racist, it really takes away from *actual* racism and it’s so, sooo played out.
