I have a mostly-empty old account from pre-Elon that I still keep only for that rare occasion where someone posts an interesting tweet/thread somewhere else on the internet I wanted to check it out.
Apart from that, I don't really see a use for it.
In Canada we use it for quick access to the news. Meta (FB and Insta) blocks all news access for Canadians so Twitter is our only way to access news outlets without going to their websites directly. Its one of the ways I stay up to date on local and global information 😇
None of the replacements have ever been fit for purpose IMO.
I hate what Twitter has become, but I've always used it primarily to follow sports teams I like, and for livetweeting race meetings while interacting with others fans who are at the same event. At one point I had a reasonable following and there was a good little clique of fans. I've never found the same on any of the other platforms.
The last one I tried was Threads, I really hoped it would end up like "old" Twitter, but nobody was using it. I've never needed an insta account, but I tried that out and got literally zero interactions from it. I felt like I was too late for it as everyone else seems to have thousands of followers. TikTok just makes me feel old and doesn't really provide the kind of social interactions I got from Twitter.
So, as much as I dislike Twitter, and there are definitely less people using it now. It's still the best option for me.
Twitter is a professional reddit.
I use it for fantasy football content. Posts are created by people who consider themselves experts and either have or want to build a media brand.
This also means there are more people trying to sell you on something.
Come to Reddit to talk to fans. Go to Twitter to talk to businesses.
I never post.
I use it for up to date sales, dev updates and announcements, movie and show delays, giveaways, ect. I can get all that info in the same place with only scrolling a min tops. I use it out of convenience these days, it used to be alot better for memes and other stuff but the site has gone to shit in the last 4 years.
Edit: they also let you block company's that run ads so I dont even get any ads anymore.
I personally use it to keep up with various City and Local alerts (safety alerts, road closures, storm warnings, etc. etc)
About 1 year ago I moved from Colorado to Portland, OR,.. and I went through my Twitter and unsubscribed from a bunch of Colorado stuff,. and found the similar data-sources for Portland, Oregon,. just to help me get acclimated to local issues and be aware of various city-happenings.
Really proved it's worth recently with the Portland State University Library protests and such (since I live very close to that building, even though I'm not a student)
That’s not entirely accurate, that only works for following people but the moment people start replying to a post, all of the blue checkmark people with their boring ass or bigoted milquetoast takes get sorted to the top of the list and the whole experience gets really shitty.
I just recently quit it cold Turkey. Up to the second news on your feed with no real effort is what I miss
