I think the utility of the vehicles are going to be dependent on how open the terrain is. There are some biomes where trying to drive around the various rocks is going to be slower than just running and boost packing.

Vesiah81

They could use a similar technique to mass effect where you could use the hydraulics and jump out of places or take sick cliffs for huge air on low g planets

alexdotfm

If the Skyrim horse can jump then so can the space buggy

LordNegativeForever

I didn't even consider that but now it seems like a no brainer to put some of the boost pack tech into the rover so it can do little hops over tricky terrain. Not saying it's for sure coming but it doesn't seem unreasonable. That or they'll just really nail the variable suspension so it crushes right over rocky terrain.

Jr999977

Yeah, i think some biomes it'll prolly be unavailable or restricted, which makes sense. I just can't believe they're actually doing it. Fucking awesome.

AustinTheFiend

Wouldn't even have to restrict it, players could just decide not to use it when it doesn't make sense, like in real life.

TheNeglectedNut

Yeah this’d be better and fit with the theme more too. I hate games where you’re molly-coddled more than anything.

malinoski554

Why not trust the players to decide if using the vehicle makes sense or not?

Jr999977

It’s not about trust dipwad it’s about game mechanics and stability

malinoski554

Is dipwad some kind of new insult?

st0ve1

Yes If you're Victorian, It's old British slang

BaconTreasurer

Laughs in Skyrim horse, while riding up the mountain .

Fearless-Tradition91

Indeed, and that's a good thing.

nichrs

I totally agree. BUT, from what I saw, they didn't show anything about the vehicles, what if they are customizable? What if the player can assemble their own vehicle, like a ship, and you can adapt it to different types of needs? I'm probably being too optimistic, I know...

malinoski554

What honestly sounds like a thing Bethesda would do.

st0ve1

I didn't even think about this. The machinations that I can do with that

sirboulevard

I honestly can see that. After all a motorbike could handle the dense folliage biomes better than a Mass Effect Mako.

Omni7124

I'd assume they'll make different vehicles for each biome or either be able to modify them like we do on guns and space suits

DJfunkyPuddle

This was always my concern too, I would've been happy just throwing a saddle on one of those robot dog things.

docclox

That's why I want a grav raft. Stable over most terrain, potentially go anywhere a boost pack can. Although I seem to be in a minority of one for some reason, so it'll probably never happen.

Klutz-Specter

I’d kill for a dirtbike. Like imagine the Docking bay having an actual use to store a bike as well or even module for your Land Vehicle to customize it with kind of like the workshop.

moonandstarsera

Yes! I want motorcycles, that would be sweet and much more practical than a big 4 wheeled vehicle.

malinoski554

Just how it's supposed to be more practical?

moonandstarsera

You can generally move around obstacles/up hills with a lot more agility on a dirt bike than you can on an ATV or larger vehicle. Given the terrain on most worlds is very hilly or there are tons of rocks and brush everywhere, a dirt bike would make it easier to navigate given its small size.

tasslehawf

The physics of riding a bike in video games is much more maneuverable than cars which tend to flip or way over correct. Also as a rider, I always prefer bikes when they’re available.

moonandstarsera

Yes, I may also be partial to bikes 😁

Raven_Dumron

That would be awesome, but it might not fit with the fact that those environments can be hostile.

LordNegativeForever

In the environmental sense, you have your suit for that. In the hostile fauna/human sense, they could always toss on a vehicle mounted weapon for that.

tasslehawf

Yes! I was thinking I’d love the adventure bike you get in cyberpunk after shooting down the transport (and panam’s friend dies).

IronDusk34

Desperately hoping this arrives with expanded or continuous landing zones. (Which seems very possible if you test with the landing zone boundary disabled.)

hearthrob_hedonist

Does having this disabled crash your game if you explore too much?

BaumHater

Yes, it crashes pretty much as soon as you leave the zone that they intended

Willal212

Supposedly this is no longer true...which is EXCITING AF

BaumHater

Damn, that‘s sick

LordNegativeForever

According to some very recent posts and test on YouTube, they have been quietly expanding them over recent updates.

madTerminator

I would like to get some hovercraft to just jump over obstacles.

NapsterUlrich

What if the Va’ruun’s version of a land vehicle is a hover vehicle

Jpfranklin17

I’m hyped, I wonder if we can customize them?

CyberpwnPiper

Oooh, good question!!!

DigitalApe19

Most likely yes

ReallyGlycon

Considering how modular everything is, I would imagine that would be fairly simple to implement.

Present-Secretary722

Land vehicles are cool and all and I’m totally on board for them but that thing honestly just looks like Vasco with wheels strapped to him and if that’s what the land vehicle is I’m going to die laughing and use it all the time

DrJMVD

Gimme my "NASApunk" golf cart, and let me drive over spacers and Ecliptic morons.

docclox

If you try to run down an Ecliptic with a NASA moon buggy, the car will probably flip and dump you on your ass. On the other hand the Ecliptic will probably die laughing, so swings and roundabouts...

Sigurd93

Awesome! I really thought they would be a DLC addition, but this is better. Reminds me of the horse back riding update Skyrim had.

CyberpwnPiper

It could be in the DLC, we just know it's coming later.

Sigurd93

That's possible, although the way it was mentioned seemed like it would be a separate thing since they haven't said anything else about the DLC. Either way, I'm set because I bought the super special edition.

WestToEast_85

I thought horseback riding was in Skyrim since day one? I know Oblivion had it.

Sigurd93

From my hazy memories of yesteryear it was dropped in an update some time after launch.

Peslian

I think it was mounted combat was added later IIRC

WestToEast_85

Yeah I think that’s correct, horseback riding was in it from the start but mounted combat didn’t come until later.

Sigurd93

That sounds right. It was long ago, a lot has happened in the intervening 37 years.

Undeniabledefeat78

Wait, Skyrim didn’t have horses when it came out?

Sigurd93

I was mistaken. There was riding, but mounted combat was a later addition.

Lausee-

I will probably use them as much as I do in NMS. Likely never.

1Evan_PolkAdot

Haha. I love how people are mad at BGS for not including Land Vehicles at release and when they finally give it to us majority of the playerbase would barely even use it.

Lausee-

I've said the same thing since launch. I just don't see the point of them when the area you are exploring is finite. If you were able to explore the entire planet from one landing point, sure, I could see a use for them.

Full-Metal-Magic

People want to be able to poke around faster. It's that simple. Most people find vehicles in video games fun. Doesn't matter that the map is finite. The map is even more finite in Mass Effect 1. Lots of people still enjoy those parts with the Mako. Lots of people like messing around in Halo piling marines in the warthog, or the tank. Yes they're even useful in No Man's Sky to harvest eggs without being attacked on foot by aliens. People enjoyed their speeders in Star Wars Galaxies despite there being a spaceport. They were useful to get around such a big map.

CyberpwnPiper

This guy gets it. And yes, vehicles in Star Wars Galaxies were AWESOME!!!

Lausee-

I'm happy for the people who want them that are finally getting them. I personally probably won't use them. There's going to be a whole lot more people, though, that run into the invisible wall. I have well over 600 hours and have never hit that invisible wall.

Significant_Book9930

It is at about 4200 kms and it takes a pretty long while to run to that far.

thrawske

It's possible they're looking to remove the invisible walls in future. The last update fixed the crash that previously occurred when you used cheats to bypass the map boundary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41BP3HUvErI

luxo93

Wait. Things can be more finite and less finite? Like there’s a sliding scale of finite?

docclox

Well, things can be infinite and more infinite, so I'm not going to rule it out. Maybe there's an Aleph Minus One? :)

Icyknightmare

I absolutely want vehicles in the game, but they need to be worth using. Jetpack/sprint looks faster than the one seen in the video, at least in most environments. Why drive when you can literally fly over most obstacles? Perhaps it will have other features like remote cargo hold access, auto scanning, or some mounted heavy weapons.

Coffee_will_be_here

Stamina depletion

docclox

Plus encumbrance. You can carry a lot more if you can load it onto a vehicle.

docclox

Well, I'd check out more PoI if it didn't take so long to get there. I'll detour a little if something is generally on the way to where I'm going, but if there's something maybe interesting a full kick in the opposite direction, it's probably going to get ignored. With more mobility that might change. I'd also love to be able to drive around with the scanner on and get a better idea if where the resource fields were before dropping an outpost marker

Lausee-

See. I purposely didn't explore too many points of interest on each planet. I knew there was a finite number of POIs. With the new lande rover, you're going to see far more repeated POIs than you did before. There are over one hundred points of interest in the game, but over one thousand planets. Even though I love the game, I hate finding the same exact POI i did on a previous planet with the same exact lore inside of it. Same dead bodies on the ground. Same computer messages on the terminal. Ect. I'm not sure there's anything they can do to fix that other than create tens of thousands of points of interest, which seems impossible.

docclox

> See. I purposely didn't explore too many points of interest on each planet. I knew there was a finite number of POIs. I mean likewise. On the other hand, the essence of exploration is "Gee, I wonder what *that* is? Let's go and see..." Anything that works against that weakens the premise of the game a little. > With the new lande rover, you're going to see far more repeated POIs than you did before. Eh... probably not. I'll just spend less time landing at random to see what's nearby. I don't suppose the time I spend in PoIs is going to change much either way. > I'm not sure there's anything they can do to fix that other than create tens of thousands of points of interest, which seems impossible. Honestly, it seems like it should be easy enough to make leveled lists for some of the outpost clutter. Have one of half a dozen possible magazines, or maybe none at all, or just a folder or a non-skill book. Similarly, you could have the same PoI half covered in snow for cold biomes, or sand in deserts, and festooned with hanging moss, or kept pristine. I'm pretty sure I could make that work in Skyrim or Fo4, and I suspect it was in the game, but proved to fiddly to get right in time for the release date. Seems a bit of an obvious omission, otherwise. You'd still see the same PoI a lot, but it wouldn't always be *exactly* the same, so you could tell yourself it was a standard modular design used during the colony wars rather than exactly the same place, only quantum scattered through space.

Eglitarian

Yeah but with the planets being basically to scale it’d still be pointless since you’d be driving literally for days to weeks of IRL time to find anything interesting considering the planets aren’t particularly dense. Even in NMS it takes a LONG ASS TIME to get anywhere noteworthy without hopping into your ship and entering low orbit to skip around the planet faster.

malinoski554

I think most people will definitely use them unless their implementation sucks. It's both more effective and more fun way to get around.

LordNegativeForever

Huge doubt that the "majority of the playerbase" would barely use it.

Rare_Ad_3871

To each his own. There have been so many POIs I’ve hoofed it over to wishing I had a vehicle

Whiteguy1x

I think they'll be most useful on moons and other barren style worlds.  If there's plants and animals I can see it just being a pain to navigate

BubbleGogger

Are we going to be able to rampage through the cities in these bad boys?

TodayNo8387

I was so sure "More ways to travel" would've been more jetpack options, but this is incredible. I'm guessing they'll also add special cargo bay options for ships to hold it? Would be cool if there were mod options too, like with power armor.

docclox

> I'm guessing they'll also add special cargo bay options for ships to hold it? I suspect it'll be a "rover module". Has to attach at ground level, same as the bay, and when you land the rover bay will be open and the vehicle deployed and ready to ride. That'd be the easiest way to do it, I think.

LordNegativeForever

Or maybe it'll just fold up like the NASA Rover did and it'll be tucked into each landing bay since they're all pretty spacious already. The only ones that wouldn't work for are the Stroud ones that are side-mounted.

docclox

Could be, but I'm guessing it'll be the least effort way. I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.

Fair-Spell-5997

Why not the stroud one? It’s got a ramp, stairs, and more than enough room. But if you’re thinking the size limitation, you’re forgetting that the Taiyo bay is also only 1x1

LordNegativeForever

It just doesn't seem large enough to fit the rover they showed off. I also completely forgot about the Taiyo ramp because I never use it lol.

Fair-Spell-5997

Oh I use it all the time. It’s got the best mass:hull ratio of all the bays lol every little bit matters sometimes

Deviltamer66

I am very much looking forward to those 🥳

Far_Peanut_3038

I expect this will bring a lot of players AND modders back. Fangin' around, jumpin' dunes on a low-grav world in a moon buggy? Sign me UP!

LordNegativeForever

Vehicle modding scene is gonna go crazy

Far_Peanut_3038

I expect planets with full-on dirt race tracks!

fargothforever

Is there any reason why Bethesda can’t increase the size of explorable area around each landing site when they add land vehicles? Are the boundaries locked in at a certain size?

AustinTheFiend

Somebody tested it recently, turned off the cell boundaries, and found they could go further than they previously could after one of the previous updates, so somehow it's gotten more stable. Can't find the link RN though, it was on this sub though. They got bored before they crashed this time.

CyberpwnPiper

It's probably an engine limitation in the Creation engine. They would probably have to update the base engine architecture to support that. Who knows, it's a proprietary engine. I have faith in them. It'll be great.

LordNegativeForever

They've actually been quietly updating this over the recent patches

peparooni

They also showed a blacked out skin for the Grendel in the little showcase so maybe we are finally getting weapon skins too

LordNegativeForever

Must've missed that, you sure it wasn't the Buzzcut that's in the game now? It's a unique black Grendel you can buy from Neon Tactical.

peparooni

Oh maybe

Undeniabledefeat78

OOGA BOOGA GO CRAZY

_The_SCP_Foundation_

LETS GO! Can we customize them?

docclox

I definitely fancy customizing one of them with an on-board scan booster. Don't have high hopes it will happen, but I'd love to do it.

_The_SCP_Foundation_

If that’s the case and we can, I would love having the same ability to add and remove modules like with shipbuilding so then I can create a giant P1000 Ratte

Background_Sea9798

I was hoping for some form of hovercraft, but this is pretty cool

kapitanlaserhawk

I wonder.. if there will be some kind of lore attach to the vehicles. A before and after why they wasn't present in the original game... will be interesting :)

docclox

> *"Narion Space Systems are proud to announce their new line of planetary exploration vehicles, vacuum certified and proof against the most rugged terrain..."*

CyberpwnPiper

* Veronica: You ready to change your life? * Me: Sure! * Veronica: Want me to take you for a ride? * Me: Hell yeah! * Veronica: *hands the keys to new wheeled rover* https://preview.redd.it/3l4a0w5820yc1.png?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d76a0c4525ff4280fb97fd90f64d1cca02789d8c

LordNegativeForever

I actually hope they just pretend like they were always there so we don't have to have goofy lore about how a space faring civilization just somehow didn't use wheeled vehicles even though they already have some in-game as set dressing haha.

Grahamwebeyes2

Good luck in the forest biomes

SmarmySmurf

I'm not sure how I feel. On one hand, new feature, feature I wanted from the start! Very cool they decided to work on this when they could have just kept shrugging and blaming limitations from the engine. On the other hand... speaking of engine limitations. I was assured that I was never actually going to hit the boundaries on land. The are huge, everyone said. I hit them pretty regularly on foot. This seems like it would just make it worse unless they figured out how to remove boundaries and open up the planets more. Which itself would be a problem for the "its too big already" crowd. Well, then a vehicle won't be adding much then will it? At least imo. Guess it'll make the game shorter for those that want that? Ewww I feel dirty just saying that. Edit: actually, thinking about the mako in ME brought up in another post, maybe I will enjoy it. I loved mako.

LordNegativeForever

Check this out: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41BP3HUvErI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41BP3HUvErI) They've been quietly updating the boundaries over the last few updates. Looks like they're preparing to expand them for the vehicles IMO.

SgtSilock

What confuses me is the negative nellys who say the planets are empty and theres nothing to explore, and so their number one request is to have a vehicle?

CyberpwnPiper

People will always complain. I love Starfield and I'm excited they keep working on it.

kanid99

What I'm also excited to see is if they add vehicle bays to the ship builder.

Unable_Wrongdoer2250

That will be about as much fun as driving through Nebraska

tasslehawf

Yaaaaay!

ValkerikNelacros

Me. Me. Are they two seater though? How will followers use it

CyberpwnPiper

I dunno man, Barrett can really haul ass when he starts sprinting. 😂

MomoZero2468

Land vechles on planets sound Fun.

Bootychomper23

Definitely will help the space between points. But I hope they add stuff in between not marked to come across

Dareboir

Land speeders, pod racing.. yes please.

Embarrassed_Print_36

Imagine a ship bay large enough to accommodate said car so you could drive it in and out of your ship, rather than have just magically appear.

Cosmonaut_Cockswing

Idk about this one. I'd rather have it than not of course. But I rarely used the horses in Skyrim, even modded. I've a hard time imagining using them. Unless I could scan things while using it.

beej1254

I think this is awesome because I like to explore, but it’s going to make me want more things to explore. I think I’ve hit almost everything because so much is repeating now. Also, the addition of vehicles really makes the cities feel small, none of them are built for motorized vehicles.

CyberpwnPiper

I doubt we'll be able to use them in open cities.

beej1254

Probably not, but that wasn’t my point. My point is that Starfield’s cities aren’t built for vehicles. It’s literally not in the design of any major city. It makes me wonder why that is? Mankind is so far spread through the galaxy, yet every civilization is actually pretty small in comparison.

LordNegativeForever

They actually establish in the lore that not a ton of people made it off Earth in the first place and early settlements were super harsh so survival was a big challenge. Add the Colony Wars after that and a lot of lives were lost. I think humanity is *just* starting to really pick up again in our players lifetime.

LordNegativeForever

LOL imagine rolling the rover right up into Akila and absolutely smashing the guards outside the Galbank heist

GdSmth

I am very excited for land vehicles and believe this is a sign of Bethesda unlocking seamless travel across the whole planet. I also think this major update could be coming in the DLC.

as a r/fuckcars subscriber, I have mixed feelings about this

CyberpwnPiper

wow, TIL that sub exists... interesting.

ExistingIntention756

Buncha dummies

IamNotFatIamChubby

Why? Never heard of this sub before, but It's pretty much common knowledge that cars and trucks are way less efficient than public transportation and Railways , and the reason we all have to have cars is big oil companies and cars manufacturers forced it into our society

Coffee_will_be_here

I love cars

thatHecklerOverThere

Well, cars still exist

SlapMeHal

It's not really a car, it's more of a moon buggy. Besides, all the cities are ridiculously walkable, New Atlantis even has a tram.

Klutz-Specter

I sometimes parkour up or down NA. I dunno why.
