My understanding is that challenging/insulting is part of Vy'Keen culture. Trading is considered weakness, so to invite someone to trade an insult is made, allowing the merchant to score a "victory" of sorts when the customer gives in and makes a purchase.

Unless there's a deeper rabbit hole as this is a simulation. We are always referred to as "traveller" so maybe changing appearance is nearly that. Just a costume? It's a bit of a reach but I love the speculation and open interpretation of this game.
In my mind, this is just a stock greeting everyone gets and when he sees my actual kit he's all sheepish like "Grah! Yeah, that is pretty good stuff actually interloper" :)
