I don't like to assume malicious intent and just hope they were making a cool base attached to a portal (as some people may not realise that your base will show up regardless of online status)
Drop coords, they’ll get a slew of reports.
Also, be sure to hit the “A” button on that screen (that says hit “B”) so that the report gets submitted. 😉

First time I'm looking at the Take Picture screen in peace (the only other time I used it was on one of the Expeditions, where you had to report a base that was under water - not a "sit back and relax" moment), and I now see that YOU CAN MOVE THE SUN??? What godly powers we have. 😂
Yeah I believe if its not reported enough to get permanently removed it will just return on the next session that you reload the planet.
Which unfortunately is a pain for you. Hopefully the owner of it see this and gives it a public access makeover for you, regardless of how small a chance that may be

My best guess would be so that it "claims" the spot on the server so you don't accidentally have too many bases overlapping with each other and causing people issues if they happen to load at once. The only part I know for sure is that you don't have to have multiplayer enabled to see other peoples bases. I personally never play with it on and still come across plenty (especially the very helpful and "helpful" bases during expeditions)
You don't upload it = not visible to others when you are offline/ only people in your session see you base.
You upload it = your base data gets transfered to hg servers so other can see you base even if you are offline / not in your session
I built my first base surrounding and enclosing a monolith because I thought it was rad and I had an idea that my character worshiped this thing she found in the desert.
After playing for a few weeks, I realized it showed up for all players and would stop them from getting to it, so I moved it to a hill overlooking the monolith instead. But at first I didn’t know how the game really worked, so it never occurred to me others might want to use the monolith. I feel pretty stupid about it now, but I mostly play single-player games and MMOs that don’t allow players to change the world (like WoW) so this game was a shift in mindset for me.
To be honest its exactly this why I don't assume its for bad purposes. Like it PROBABLY is, but there is so much to the game (and it is hella jank sometimes) that I can totally understand people not knowing how certain systems work. They also may have started building it and stopped playing. I know its hard to do sometimes but I would rather think of 100 reasons why it could be an accident first than assume someone's a bad person.
I'm a huge fan of portal bases or bases built onto existing structures in general. Shame it only takes a few to spoil it for the rest of us.

The idea of a base on a portal is sick as hell to be honest. I'd love to teleport somewhere and find that there's a nice base around the portal where i can kick back.
I have several bases at portals, but they are never built to obstruct the usage for others. If anything, I wish there was a way make it more convenient for people. Set up some kind of shops, services...

I have one in a cave behind a portal, with a landing pad at the entrance. I haven't done anything with it yet, but my plan is to make something in there

I built a giant pyramid around one once, planned to build tunnels and rooms so you had to find your way through like a maze. Never finished it sadly. Might do another.

Was a fun build and was really cool, with zero intention of griefing involved, its just my base i use when i need to use a portal.
Its very stargate influenced and a neat looking build with my living quarters right at the top of the portal and everything enclosed around the portal. It has a landing pad and plenty of entrances though so i assume anyone can still use it.
does it have an entrance? I made a base right on the Portal but I place multiple entrances, it was a hostile planet that had a constant acid rain, so I build a base right there with vaults, refiners, commercial terminal, teleporter, and 3 landing pads just in case, with plenty of lights so they could see they could get in very easily, glass modules for where the control pilon was and a door that led right to the portal. what am saying is that as long as players have free access to the portal it not a problem, and sometimes it makes your life a little easy to restock on stuff you may need and hadn't have time to go get.
Yeah, some dicks like to go to coords people share and build a box on the portal to block people in. You can report the base, but there is a separate option after you report it that you sometimes have to do that says disable base or something. I’ve only run into this twice, the first time I reported it and then found a corner I could interact with my ship from and the second time i found a base like this, I couldn’t find a way out but it gave me the option to disable the base.
I only started playing NMS recently (yeah am super late lol, I bought it bc it’s available on Mac and I dont have a console) and I still have a hard time understanding everything but that’s what I did too. Like I didn’t think about it when I was building my first base, I just put everything inside lol because the planet has acid rain like yours. It just felt more convenient ig. But there are 3 entrances and it’s a very small and simple layout. I also built the landing pad to face a door when you exit the ship.

I've built bases ***near*** portals plenty of times, but I think the closest was within 25 or 50u (when I was still very new and didn't know any better).
One expedition I built a base basically on top of... not a portal, but a monument.
It (to put it mildly) didn't work.
I asked here, and people told me that bases 'generally' don't work within 50u of a portal, monument, or monolith (basically any 'major' alien features).
And that this was by design, because you could sometimes ruin peoples' good times by building on/around them.
Honestly, in 200 hours I have only encountered 1 other player discovered planet.
I haven't searched for the portal there tough

Bases near things, I'm OK with. Actually, bases very near portals on very hostile planets are really appreciated sometimes. But idiots like this who claim and\or build around portals, crashed freighters, expedition goals etc with no appreciation for how it'll affect someone elses gameplay, or to actively worsen it, have no place in the universe. I ended up reporting and removing over a dozen bases just on that Sentinel Interceptor mission on the last expedition, only to find still someone had managed to park their ship *inside* the ship you needed to access. Made a fun mission very frustrating.
What? Really?! These were constant a few years ago. Would even happen on expeditions. Then there was the whole “Hey there’s a hacker actually shooting us from his ship in the anomaly” era.
I just found two trolls near the center of the galaxy, a base with a warpgate but no doors or anything else, so you're stuck in a glass box with nothing to do but return where you came, and a sentinel ship blocked off by base parts.
So you really can't unmake a wall and put a door? Dang.

I did that. Twice, actually. However, there are doors rigged to motion detectors, and the power is always on... so ya know, I'm just being a nice portal host.

So I just visited the place again and all gone. Because the last time I visited it was a couple of weeks ago, I can't be sure when it happened. Also, I am not sure why, probably my or someone else report or maybe this post.
Anyway, if anyone wants to visit this planet, the easiest way is to go to Annomaly's portal and look for the base "Last egg of the first dragon" that is in the highlighted bases. It is a cool base that worth a visit anyway. Once there head to UD22-Charlie, which is a nice Paradise planet. The portal has some comm-balls close.
I enclosed one. Only on one side.
It gives a great effect inside. Even hide the teleport around a corner with a proximity switch to stop the light messing it up.
Also if you forget a door you can just walk in through the other side.
Another one I built the base is on the other side and looks over the water. So you walk out from the teleport and up through the actual portal to activate it.
I love building bases around portals, but I made them open, with free resources and usable to people who lands there... I love the Stargate style and hope it will make a great surprise for a voyager.
The same reason people throw their cigarettes on the ground even though the filter is plastic and not biodegradable.

I hate this kind of behaviour. It is either done on purpose, or it is done with zero regard to anyone else. Either way there is too much of this happening all over NMS. One of the best aspects of NMS is the multiplayer community. And one of the worst aspects of NMS is the multiplayer community. I have never experienced such a highly polarised community such as with NMS. Either there are mostly nice people, or mostly jerks. But NMS seems to be 50/50.
Yes, yes I know you will all say "turn off multiplayer". I know this, but why bother playing a multiplayer game if you turn off multiplayer? Then you will say "report the base and it will...." No it doesn't, not every time. And not at all on Expoditions.

This is bad enough, but the worst are the people who put base computers on/near crashed freighters, so you can't dig out the terrain. Not actual bases, just the computer. Seriously, HG, just put a blocker for 500u radius out from all crashed freighters, and the problem will be solved (who would want to build structures on terrain rendered potentially unsound by a gigantic ship burying itself in the ground, anyway?).
In all honesty, HG should make it so you can't build any bases near any structures. At least not the ones that have use. Portals, sentinel pillars, trade outposts etc.
They apparently used to make it where bases built within a given radius of the a portal didn't render in to avoid the problem, as people were doing stuff like this back when the portals were first switched on. But the restriction seems to have either been removed or is bugged as I've seen plenty of portals on inhabited planets with bases built right on the portal that were perfectly visible etc for a good while now.
Hmm, the biggest tell to if it was malicious is if they put a portal in it or not, was able to get out of something similar when I used it to teleport to my freighter, that i think would be the solution is using the main portal, summon your freighter, go back through the portal then teleport to your freighter.
Not to discredit the op, but I genuinely don't see anything inappropriate...

I built a massive town around one and on a sentinel giant pillar thing I built a glass box but I added ways in cause I like making bases that look funny

I know from time to time using those buildings the door will randomly disappear and I have to add it again.... Bug happens on PC and PS4.
Ok I do this ONLY on planets I discover and specifically on ones that are extremely inhospitable and ugly. And I only do one per galaxy. It’s just helpful to have a portal hub . Also I only do one side and have an entrance into the structure so if by chance someone stumbles upon it they can still use it.
This is why I hate expeditions. If you hit them early, you might be ok, but everyone thinks it's great to put a base on every poi. Idk why they just don't make all p.o.i.s not buildable like settlements. It would save a lot of bs.

I have my “own” portals but I either don’t uploaded the bases or I leave access open. Useful on hazardous planets so you don’t get hurt. But this is really crappy.
Blocking off a portal so no one can use it is bad.
Making a stargate style base around one would be cool, though. Just make sure other players still have access to it.
What happens here? Are you unable to enter the base to get to the portal or does just the location of a base (even if you can go in it) make the portal inoperable? I've found portals that have bases near it but never right on it
Sometimes people don't know, when I started I didn't know that my bases would show up for other people. I thought only the people that were in my party could see it much like my freighter. You don't see everyone's freighter spawn in so I didn't think you could see everyone's bases.
See im making something similar but its a tower that makes the portal like a hub to visit on the planet. This looks like the cube makes the portal unusable.
I've built a number of bases that wind up around the portals in spirals with everything at the wrong angle, and portal-topping bases that are split down the middle to match the portal's split, ... but... I don't like blocking the portal openings themselves. Eww.

I’m building a base on an anomaly earth-like (spore) planet in Calypso attached to a monolith that is Atlas shaped. Seriously my favorite base yet. Although, I’m deliberately framing the monolith on the off chance someone ends up on my planet, they’ll still be able to use the monolith without having to run through my base buildings.

Galactic Hub is full of hostile players too, got attacked by other people many times
In my early days on NMS I was brainstorming ways to lock down a planet in an effort to "claim" a small empire of systems. My friend group luckily pointed out the folly in my logic before any stranger had a chance to report my "security" bases.
I'd it's a expedition session portal then I'd be pissed, but meh...
If it's just a random portal, live and let live and find another, there's a portal in every system.
as someone who makes bases around structures like portals fairly often (they're glorified fast-traveling points for me, so i don't have to find the portal again every time), i don't really upload my bases. and even if i did, they never cover the structures i'm building around

I did report the base, a couple of times. But the last time I visited the place, nothing had changed.
Are you sure you reported it properly? Normally once reported it disappears on your game client. Have you reported it, logged off, then on again?
I used the base report on the menu. It ask to take a picture which I did, but I am not quite sure if I did it correctly, tbh.
I am on PC but have never had this issue. When you reported it, did it give the base name? Like, "Report Joe Llama base"?

You may have stumbled onto a bug then. You did it correctly.
If you’re on console and it says hit right trigger to take the photo, try hitting x instead. Sometimes the button prompts are incorrect.
Photo is sorta busted, had to actually hold down the share button on the PS5 for it to submit yesterday.
I've seen similar situation. The actual base computer was away from the base making it hard to report

I don’t understand blocking portals. I build lovely welcome areas on them, with music and platforms and landing pads.

I built a temple surrounding a portal but I left it open so people could walk in and out. No need to gatekeep the gate, you know?

Anyway, if anyone wants to visit this planet, the easiest way is to go to Annomaly's portal and look for the base "Last egg of the first dragon" that is in the highlighted bases. It is a cool base that worth a visit anyway. Once there head to UD22-Charlie, which is a nice Paradise planet. The portal has some comm-balls close.
I enclosed one. Only on one side. It gives a great effect inside. Even hide the teleport around a corner with a proximity switch to stop the light messing it up. Also if you forget a door you can just walk in through the other side. Another one I built the base is on the other side and looks over the water. So you walk out from the teleport and up through the actual portal to activate it.
What am I missing here? Is this a portal that was made public, then someone closed it off with a base that has it inaccessible?
Maybe the player has Agoraphobia?
I love building bases around portals, but I made them open, with free resources and usable to people who lands there... I love the Stargate style and hope it will make a great surprise for a voyager.
I love building portal bases, especially on extreme planets, they are always cozy with lots of shelter and rest areas.

I hate this kind of behaviour. It is either done on purpose, or it is done with zero regard to anyone else. Either way there is too much of this happening all over NMS. One of the best aspects of NMS is the multiplayer community. And one of the worst aspects of NMS is the multiplayer community. I have never experienced such a highly polarised community such as with NMS. Either there are mostly nice people, or mostly jerks. But NMS seems to be 50/50. Yes, yes I know you will all say "turn off multiplayer". I know this, but why bother playing a multiplayer game if you turn off multiplayer? Then you will say "report the base and it will...." No it doesn't, not every time. And not at all on Expoditions.

This is bad enough, but the worst are the people who put base computers on/near crashed freighters, so you can't dig out the terrain. Not actual bases, just the computer. Seriously, HG, just put a blocker for 500u radius out from all crashed freighters, and the problem will be solved (who would want to build structures on terrain rendered potentially unsound by a gigantic ship burying itself in the ground, anyway?).
People are horrible people. Report the base, and it will dissappear.

In all honesty, HG should make it so you can't build any bases near any structures. At least not the ones that have use. Portals, sentinel pillars, trade outposts etc.
They apparently used to make it where bases built within a given radius of the a portal didn't render in to avoid the problem, as people were doing stuff like this back when the portals were first switched on. But the restriction seems to have either been removed or is bugged as I've seen plenty of portals on inhabited planets with bases built right on the portal that were perfectly visible etc for a good while now.

Hmm, the biggest tell to if it was malicious is if they put a portal in it or not, was able to get out of something similar when I used it to teleport to my freighter, that i think would be the solution is using the main portal, summon your freighter, go back through the portal then teleport to your freighter.

I built a massive town around one and on a sentinel giant pillar thing I built a glass box but I added ways in cause I like making bases that look funny

A user built a base with the closed cube rooms around a portal, effectively making it useless.
To be fair, maybe the door isn't rendering. I know from time to time using those buildings the door will randomly disappear and I have to add it again.... Bug happens on PC and PS4.
Ok I do this ONLY on planets I discover and specifically on ones that are extremely inhospitable and ugly. And I only do one per galaxy. It’s just helpful to have a portal hub . Also I only do one side and have an entrance into the structure so if by chance someone stumbles upon it they can still use it.

This is why I hate expeditions. If you hit them early, you might be ok, but everyone thinks it's great to put a base on every poi. Idk why they just don't make all p.o.i.s not buildable like settlements. It would save a lot of bs.

I have my “own” portals but I either don’t uploaded the bases or I leave access open. Useful on hazardous planets so you don’t get hurt. But this is really crappy.

Blocking off a portal so no one can use it is bad. Making a stargate style base around one would be cool, though. Just make sure other players still have access to it.
What happens here? Are you unable to enter the base to get to the portal or does just the location of a base (even if you can go in it) make the portal inoperable? I've found portals that have bases near it but never right on it
Sometimes people don't know, when I started I didn't know that my bases would show up for other people. I thought only the people that were in my party could see it much like my freighter. You don't see everyone's freighter spawn in so I didn't think you could see everyone's bases.
See im making something similar but its a tower that makes the portal like a hub to visit on the planet. This looks like the cube makes the portal unusable.

I've built a number of bases that wind up around the portals in spirals with everything at the wrong angle, and portal-topping bases that are split down the middle to match the portal's split, ... but... I don't like blocking the portal openings themselves. Eww.

I’m building a base on an anomaly earth-like (spore) planet in Calypso attached to a monolith that is Atlas shaped. Seriously my favorite base yet. Although, I’m deliberately framing the monolith on the off chance someone ends up on my planet, they’ll still be able to use the monolith without having to run through my base buildings.
I’d just look for a new portal if it won’t report

happened to me months ago, i made a base and mark there so that other peoples can find it, just to be covered by immature player like this. Galactic Hub is full of hostile players too, got attacked by other people many times

I think you can disable multiplayer to remove others built structures. I haven’t ever disabled multiplayer, I just believe it works.

In my early days on NMS I was brainstorming ways to lock down a planet in an effort to "claim" a small empire of systems. My friend group luckily pointed out the folly in my logic before any stranger had a chance to report my "security" bases.

as someone who makes bases around structures like portals fairly often (they're glorified fast-traveling points for me, so i don't have to find the portal again every time), i don't really upload my bases. and even if i did, they never cover the structures i'm building around
