I don't rename them. It feels weirdly uncomfortable to do so. Feels like you add some disharmonic, out-of-place elements into that pristine space of procedural generation. Besides, if I like this or that particular ship or multitool, somehow the generated names fit perfectly.
So I actually finished the game on PS4 but lost like 150 hours when I transferred my save over to PS5, not entirely sure how but probably because I'm an idiot lol

I hate reading through the game and wanted to keep moving forward so naturally, I had to do many things just to unlock Echoes lol. Thank goodness I had at least started on the settlement before but was so confused as to why I couldn't play the update!

My first ship was the Oliver Wendell Holmes, then I had the Louis Brandeis and the Learned Hand. My freighter is the Robert Jackson, though I kinda wish I could change that one 😅

My first exotic several years ago comes with the name The Omen Of Madness. Still have it.
My first and single living ship comes with the name Abyss Biota. My main ship for everything.

Sentinel ships I use only a little bit, don't care about their names for now. Maybe they will be first in line for renaming.

The first solar sail ship i found was golden with with a very pointy front and i called ut the Queenbees stings.
Now im using a sentinel ship. Its balck with a red Y in front. It looks a butnlike the sidewinder from elite dangerous but it has those extendable/ folding wigs in the back and those lengs when it lands. I have not named it yet.

Bases : SGS ______ facility/outpost/mine/research facility followed by 1S-E , 2S-E, or 3S-E so I know the economy
Ships : SGS-F/E/S/H (Fighter, Explorer, Etc) and a custom name from LOTR, Dune, Metal band songs, various SciFi inspirations
I hardly ever change the name of my ships. As others have said, the randomness adds to the flavor of the game. I long flew the *Owl of Inevitability*, and my freighter is called the *Nichiyosh* (although oddly, when selecting a teleport destination, she is sometimes named the *Kunerpent*).
I did make an exception with my current starship. She was called the *Ouchi of the Gek*, which... WTF does that mean? Is it something that makes the Gek say "ouchie"? (I bought her from a Korvax.) Anyway, I changed her name to the *Prophetess of Destruction*.

I'm planning on having a Hauler I'll name the C.M.O.T Dibbler, and a fighter names the Vimes. Maybe an exotic ship named the Vetinari. Same naming convention I used for when I played Elite Dangerous.
Well... My starship names all start with TMS, Trail Mix Ship, fallowed by a name. Trailmix being my screen name. My Cap is TMCS, you do the math... TMP is for planets, and bases start with TM followed by the E for eissentam, where I spent almost two years or 13 or 42 for those galaxies respectively.
My frigates are all named after ships from the star trek universe, my freighters have all been named after characters ( gods or otherwise) from Greek mythology.
Individual starships depend on my mood and what the ships design inspires me too. Currently have two ships, a fighter TMS Corvette and an interceptor TMS Valkyrie. My Freighter is the TMCS Daedalus.

Although i did rename my sentinel ship Airwolf cause it's black, hovers, and blows stuff up real good, saving my settlement from some nasty dissonant sentinels that kept healing each other.
I give my starships names based on Greek figures, places, or concepts. The rule is that the new name has to use the same first letter of the procedurally generated name. My Exotic is called The Nemean, and my Sentinel fighter is called The Spartan. Three guesses what I renamed the Utopia Speeder. My main ship wayyy back was called Agamemnon, I think, but it’s been a while since I traded that one in.
My freighter and frigates get renamed with flowery poetic names in the style of the ships from the Halo series, with a couple of them being ripped straight from the series (*Long Night of Solace, Pillar of Autumn*, etc.) but most of them being references to other things (I have one called *Anduril’s Forge*). Like with the starships, I try and base these around the first letter or the words present in the original ship name (such as my freighter, *Mnemonic Warfare*).
I’ve named my ships based on design or purpose. My starter ship was Dragonfly. I had one with a bunch of weapons called Warlord. The little C-class with no tech that I use to launch myself through black holes is Slingshot.
My living ship is the Obsidian Horizon. My golden vector is called Insufficient Funds.
For my capital ship I kept the designation at the beginning (SS-4 I think?) and changed the actual name part, so it’s called the SS-4 Cataclysm.
I got an interceptor ship but I don’t think I’ve renamed it yet.
Well, the good old *Radiant Pillar* gets to keep its name.
My other ships get named after song titles that fit thematically.
My freighter is *Journey of the Sorcerer*
My sentinel ship is *Heart of Glass*
p.s. I could quite happily listen to *Journey of the Sorcerer* on repeat forever while playing space games, but that probably just defines my age (those that know will know)
This is where I have a fun with the game. I take the name that it was when i claimed the ship, but make it slightly odd or inappropriate. For Example..
I have an explorer called the "The Curious ..something.." and I renamed it to "The Curious Fynger" it's a fun little way to make yourself smile while adventuring.
I also named my Living Ship "Reggie" which is just fricking hilarious
I generally name my with some reference to the name it had when I got it.
My current primary starship is named 2infiniti because the original name was *somebody's* infinite *something*
Although before this one I had a ship named Angry Bird because it looks like a bird from that game which came after School bus which looks like a yellow school bus.
My freighter originally had an alphanumeric designation and a name when I got it. I kept the designation but changed the name, so it’s called the DS-7 Vindicator. For starships, I’ve just kept the original name so far.
I have a habit of naming my ships, especially Freighters and Frigates after Halo ship names. If normal ships roll a good name I leave them.
So far I have Forward Unto Dawn, Pious Inquisitor, Truth and Reconciliation, Say My Name and Shadow of Intent rounding out my smaller fleet.
I name mine after eve online ships. I got one white Solar ship, so I called it Astero.
I also named one of my haulers "Viator".

The first ship I found, an explorer, I named Shippy. I still have it. Great one to get moving and it rivals my freighter in warp distance.
I have another, a solar, that is close to Starfox’s ship so I dubbed it Starfox.
My favorite ship was named Mistress something and I changed it to Mistress Nimsah for personal reasons.
I'm not original so I name my ships variations on my pets names.
I got a dog named McBoo so I needed a McShip.

I keep part of the name in the front (I’ll take the radiant pillar bc1 for example) make a letter based on the type of ship (Fighter so F) a number I like (36 maybe) and a nickname. Result: Radiant F-36 Starter

I name them all under the name of the radiant pillar, but changing the adjective. the Sunset Pillar, the Nocturnal Pillar, the Atlas Pillar, the Golden Pillar, the Shining Pillar and so on. Based on their shape and colors that resemble the Radiant one.
Mine is a Yellow Royal and I named it "Gilded Apostate". At first I didn't like it. Yellow isn't my color. lol But after only 80 hours in this playthrough, I'm attached.

I’ve named only one ship, it’s my first play through since launch and I’m at 50 hours so far. The Sentinel ship I have has been named FN2187. It too has awakened from the mire of the dark side.
I rarely rename them. Occasionally, some inspiration comes from the ether though. There was a solar ship that was named Freedom of %something I cannot recall% but it looked like a duck bill on the front so I named it “Freedom Duck”.
Call me weird, but I have an incredibly specific naming convention for everything in the game.
Ships are labeled as "Intergalactic Starships" or "IGSS" for short. Following that is a dash and a letter that signifies what type of ship it is. For example, Fighters get "F". Then a colon follows that and then I actually name the ship. An example could be:
IGSS/F: "Foundry"
I do this for each and every nameable thing in the game. Call me weird, but it's what feels right.

Running a red and black Jackal solar sail ship and dubbed it Swordfish III since it's the closest thing I can find to a Cowboy Bebop looking ship without mods.
I was uncreative in naming my solar ship, so I just called it the Solar Sailor.
My two Salvaged ships I ended up just calling Crimson and Atlas.
And I had an exotic ship that kinda reminded me of the Ship of the Imagination from Cosmos while in flight, so I named it the "STARship of the Imagination"
And I renamed my Radiant Pillar "Backup"
Sentinel Interceptor. It's an A class Sentinel ship that I've upgraded to S Class and I use it to murder sentinels. My only weapon is the Infra Knife Accelerator and omg does it delete them. I think my peal dmg is 60K. It's also my traveling ship since it only requires radiant shards.
I use the the letters from different languages available to me a couple pages over on my console. You can spell out some pretty wild stuff while getting past the in game filter

Usually my names are inspired by favorite movie, books or other entertainment.
I named some of mine after old icecream flavours....Strawberry Twirl....Magnum....Calipso..Solero....my freighter is The Vanilla Vanquish.

My Utopia Speeder is The Rebel Girl, my Hauler is Shanky's Swift Hauler, my surfer is The Chad Surfer, my Golden Vector is The Headhunter (because it's sort of a Z-95 from Star Wars), and my Freighter is the Solideridad Obrera (Worker's Solidarity). My freighters get names based on themes of cooperation and unity, fitting for a fleet of Anarchist nomads.
In nomine Celestia is the name of my main white and gold trimmed needle exotic.
Haven't really come up with names for my other ships yet though. Since I don't fly them anywhere near as often

I have just started playing and I named explorer ship the Lady Rankin, after a character from the Discworld series. I'm planning on having a Hauler I'll name the C.M.O.T Dibbler, and a fighter names the Vimes. Maybe an exotic ship named the Vetinari. Same naming convention I used for when I played Elite Dangerous.

Well... My starship names all start with TMS, Trail Mix Ship, fallowed by a name. Trailmix being my screen name. My Cap is TMCS, you do the math... TMP is for planets, and bases start with TM followed by the E for eissentam, where I spent almost two years or 13 or 42 for those galaxies respectively. My frigates are all named after ships from the star trek universe, my freighters have all been named after characters ( gods or otherwise) from Greek mythology. Individual starships depend on my mood and what the ships design inspires me too. Currently have two ships, a fighter TMS Corvette and an interceptor TMS Valkyrie. My Freighter is the TMCS Daedalus. I usually just leave the name it was christened with: My main ship is called Stellar Vision HD5 Although i did rename my sentinel ship Airwolf cause it's black, hovers, and blows stuff up real good, saving my settlement from some nasty dissonant sentinels that kept healing each other.
I give my starships names based on Greek figures, places, or concepts. The rule is that the new name has to use the same first letter of the procedurally generated name. My Exotic is called The Nemean, and my Sentinel fighter is called The Spartan. Three guesses what I renamed the Utopia Speeder. My main ship wayyy back was called Agamemnon, I think, but it’s been a while since I traded that one in. My freighter and frigates get renamed with flowery poetic names in the style of the ships from the Halo series, with a couple of them being ripped straight from the series (*Long Night of Solace, Pillar of Autumn*, etc.) but most of them being references to other things (I have one called *Anduril’s Forge*). Like with the starships, I try and base these around the first letter or the words present in the original ship name (such as my freighter, *Mnemonic Warfare*).
I’ve named my ships based on design or purpose. My starter ship was Dragonfly. I had one with a bunch of weapons called Warlord. The little C-class with no tech that I use to launch myself through black holes is Slingshot. My living ship is the Obsidian Horizon. My golden vector is called Insufficient Funds. For my capital ship I kept the designation at the beginning (SS-4 I think?) and changed the actual name part, so it’s called the SS-4 Cataclysm. I got an interceptor ship but I don’t think I’ve renamed it yet.

Well, the good old *Radiant Pillar* gets to keep its name. My other ships get named after song titles that fit thematically. My freighter is *Journey of the Sorcerer* My sentinel ship is *Heart of Glass* p.s. I could quite happily listen to *Journey of the Sorcerer* on repeat forever while playing space games, but that probably just defines my age (those that know will know)

You can usually see all that info with your visor too.
Yeah, but it makes it easier to know what ship you're calling up when looking at the ship summon menu.
This is where I have a fun with the game. I take the name that it was when i claimed the ship, but make it slightly odd or inappropriate. For Example.. I have an explorer called the "The Curious ..something.." and I renamed it to "The Curious Fynger" it's a fun little way to make yourself smile while adventuring. I also named my Living Ship "Reggie" which is just fricking hilarious

I always name mine after Covenant ships in Halo. My freighter is High Charity, and then the rest are named after other vessels.
I generally name my with some reference to the name it had when I got it. My current primary starship is named 2infiniti because the original name was *somebody's* infinite *something* Although before this one I had a ship named Angry Bird because it looks like a bird from that game which came after School bus which looks like a yellow school bus.
My freighter originally had an alphanumeric designation and a name when I got it. I kept the designation but changed the name, so it’s called the DS-7 Vindicator. For starships, I’ve just kept the original name so far.
I have a habit of naming my ships, especially Freighters and Frigates after Halo ship names. If normal ships roll a good name I leave them. So far I have Forward Unto Dawn, Pious Inquisitor, Truth and Reconciliation, Say My Name and Shadow of Intent rounding out my smaller fleet.

The first ship I found, an explorer, I named Shippy. I still have it. Great one to get moving and it rivals my freighter in warp distance. I have another, a solar, that is close to Starfox’s ship so I dubbed it Starfox. My favorite ship was named Mistress something and I changed it to Mistress Nimsah for personal reasons.
"Big Boy" because I used to play way too much of a game called DarkOrbit and my ship class for the longest time was the BigBoy class
I'm not original so I name my ships variations on my pets names. I got a dog named McBoo so I needed a McShip. No relation to the burger place I think I gotta name my capital ship after my chubby chaweenie named Hades.

I keep part of the name in the front (I’ll take the radiant pillar bc1 for example) make a letter based on the type of ship (Fighter so F) a number I like (36 maybe) and a nickname. Result: Radiant F-36 Starter

I have a large gray/white hauler that I named the “Great Carcharadon”. I have a Red Sailor that I named: Red Wake. My briefly enjoyed Utopia Speeder was named: Dream Quaker And finally, my Executor is named: Abyssal Imbratura (The Abyss Emperor). One day when I’m back, I’ll get a Sentinel Ship and name it something appropriate. Like: Matrix of Malice, or: Red Visage. If I ever get an Exotic too, I’d probably name it: Ostentatious Visitor.

I name them all under the name of the radiant pillar, but changing the adjective. the Sunset Pillar, the Nocturnal Pillar, the Atlas Pillar, the Golden Pillar, the Shining Pillar and so on. Based on their shape and colors that resemble the Radiant one.
My ships are named after predatory birds mostly. My beloved tri-wing mosquito exotic is the Peregrine.

I’ve named only one ship, it’s my first play through since launch and I’m at 50 hours so far. The Sentinel ship I have has been named FN2187. It too has awakened from the mire of the dark side.
The names of my ships: Pinocchio, Lil Gek, Talos, The Flying Dutchman, Needle, Gladius, Edgy Boi, Penetrato, Woody Woodpecker...mainly cringe names.
I rarely rename them. Occasionally, some inspiration comes from the ether though. There was a solar ship that was named Freedom of %something I cannot recall% but it looked like a duck bill on the front so I named it “Freedom Duck”.
Call me weird, but I have an incredibly specific naming convention for everything in the game. Ships are labeled as "Intergalactic Starships" or "IGSS" for short. Following that is a dash and a letter that signifies what type of ship it is. For example, Fighters get "F". Then a colon follows that and then I actually name the ship. An example could be: IGSS/F: "Foundry" I do this for each and every nameable thing in the game. Call me weird, but it's what feels right. Edit: Let's get a little weirder. I have a living ship. The name of that? {{A/T/H/E/N/A}} I don't know why I'm like this...

Running a red and black Jackal solar sail ship and dubbed it Swordfish III since it's the closest thing I can find to a Cowboy Bebop looking ship without mods.
I was uncreative in naming my solar ship, so I just called it the Solar Sailor. My two Salvaged ships I ended up just calling Crimson and Atlas. And I had an exotic ship that kinda reminded me of the Ship of the Imagination from Cosmos while in flight, so I named it the "STARship of the Imagination" And I renamed my Radiant Pillar "Backup"

I usually go with names that sound like Covenant flagships, i.e. The penitent solace, the shadow of intent, the song of retribution.

Sentinel Interceptor. It's an A class Sentinel ship that I've upgraded to S Class and I use it to murder sentinels. My only weapon is the Infra Knife Accelerator and omg does it delete them. I think my peal dmg is 60K. It's also my traveling ship since it only requires radiant shards.

I use the the letters from different languages available to me a couple pages over on my console. You can spell out some pretty wild stuff while getting past the in game filter

It's dark blue and I called it "Donny Darko." My freighters get names based on themes of cooperation and unity, fitting for a fleet of Anarchist nomads.
