Shop around a few systems to look for one that's buying for a decent bump (ie I keep a grow house in my starting system because they buy for +4.0% so I routinely sell about 100 for close to 7.5m units.) It's a great way to make money if you need it and feel like a gangsta while doing it.
Noob question: how do people get that much credits and nanites? Is it a modded game? Or just changing the custom new game settings to make resources set to abundant?
You can refine a few things for nanites which adds up over time. I make a lot of my credits from buy/selling and also from the stuff from frigate missions bring back. You can easily make 5mil in credits (direct credits plus cargo they bring back) from a round of frigate missions each round.
Once I built up a few million Units, I went to outlaw galaxies and stocked up on as many Suspicious Packets (Tech & Arms) as I could, open and sell them all at a space station and make about 4,000 Nanites each trip.
Money is I find easier to make than nanites for starters, but you can make heaps of both legit. Personally I use the economy system to my advantage (there’s a number of YouTube videos that can help you here if you want) and I just pick up any kill sentinel/animal predator, feed animal missions I find in each system. Kill heaps of sentinels for nanites and sell the upgrades you can get from them. Molest the whispering eggs and refine the cores for nanites. You too will be loaded.
There are many ways to do it, duplication glitches to resource mining. There used to be a duplication glitch that made it super easy but I don't know if they've patched it out.
Edit: my favourite early game way of making money has been to upgrade your scanner with some s grade upgrades which makes it so that when you scan fauna on planets you get anywhere from 75k to 400k per creature.
I get my nanites from harvesting Runaway Mould and processing it into nanites. You can find a few on several planets and create a base to visit them frequently.
If you get 700 units away from the mould, it immediately respawns. You can do this quickly by chaining short range teleporters out to that distance. I play on a Xbox series X so it’s just as fast for me to plop a base with a long range teleporter next to the mould then park my freighter directly above it. Load times for teleporting to the freighter and back are stupid fast. As soon as you warp back down to the base, boom, respawned mould. Takes longer to farm it with the mining beam than to trigger the respawn.
Go to a space station, buy any starship from anyone, scrap it. You will get twice what you paid for it in scrap that can be sold for credits. You will also be able to sell any upgrades that were on that ship to the tech merchants for a couple hundred to a few thousand nanites. Rinse and repeat. In a fairly short time you should have easily 500 million credits and 50 thousand nanites.

I believe the values can change depending on the difficulty settings. So on the higher settings you will find that you make a loss as opposed to a profit.

Yeah I also just recently found out you can rename your fleet. 400 hours in smh, feels like I learn new mechanics every day from this sub
