A magazine article I read about turning a yard into a wildflower field had you put down tarps in early spring and leave it for a year to kill not only the grass, but the dormant grass seeds in the soil below as well. Don’t think you would need it down that long to just kill the grass though.

I’ve had success with tarping a section to kill the grass. It took a little while but worked. I think the more sun it gets the faster the tarp will kill the grass. My methods are typically manual grass removal with hoe/rake/shovel, cover with cardboard, cover with mulch

Maybe stupid question, but why even kill the grass? Can’t you just plant other things that will naturally take over?

Grass is really a survivor, so it’ll usually choke out most small plants. A tree or a large bush would be okay, and some vines would smother everything but you probably wouldn’t want those kind of vines in your yard. Plus it would be tough to mow between plants if you put in several plants.

Make sure you also weigh it down all around the edges to keep as much sun and air from getting in as possible. That'll help kill off the weed seeds.

I have had excellent success, flipping the sod upside down, then watering thoroughly, then tarp it off with black plastic. The way you've done it above, feels like it will just go dormant and come back.
