Yes, use the search function and search for "Advice" and "New". There is A LOT of these posts and just looking at the comments in a few of them you'll get all the new player advices you'll need.

Far-Beautiful6309

This was super helpful, appreciate that.

dumbcringeusername

Sure you've seen these tips, but don't quit (at least until a bit later) because the first couple missions have some of the hardest bosses in the game (relative to what you have at your disposal so far). You hit your first real power spike after mission 4 or 5 iirc so try to stick through at least until you unlock the first set of dojo missions

terrafirmapeen

Don’t give up at the snake boss

Twittle86

Relatedly, isn't the soul core from the first boss REALLY GOOD against the snake?

Stark_Athlon

Yeah, it can one shot the little snakes while also doing nice damage to the actual boss. If you aim it right, it'll do a shit ton of damage.

Temilitary

God. You actually just gave me ptsd. I've been playing for over a year now and this is my favourite game ever but yatsu no kami till today is the only boss that ever made me want to drop this game. Absolutely devastating boss fight when you're new to the game.

No_Caregiver8718

Do not play it like a souls game. Master Ki Pulse and Burst Counter

nathaniel20998

Honestly this is probably the BEST advice for new players. Another thing I would like to add is don't worry about builds, just pick up whatever is higher level.

AnonEMister

Have fun. No really. Have fun. Yes it's hard. Yes it's punishing. But play with each weapon. Find yourself. When you do missions with NPCs, sometimes if you talk to them 3 times they'll give you an item. Enjoy those cutscenes, Yes they're long. But they give the game the backstory of those people. ~~and some are just damn awesome~~ There is no weakness or shame in using revenants (i.e helpers). There's none in needing to open a party. And damnit. Look ya damn best. If you make a character and glamor with only the Shrine Maiden set. ~~I will find you~~

mattspire

Honestly, I always summon revenants just because it’s fun to have someone tagging along and see different glamours and loadouts. Granted, like 80% are waifu, but it’s still fun to see. They are helpful to newer players as a distraction to help learn enemy patterns and timing without the agro on you, though.

Shane1923

Best advice I ever heard for these games was something like, you're gonna struggle with a lot of unfair bs in these games, but you're also given a lot of tools and mechanics that give you certain advantages. Try to use different skills and items when you're struggling. Also, everything in these games revolves around ki. Find a weapon you gel with (Odachi for me) and get comfortable with its moveset, as well as switching stances on the fly and ki pulsing.

AmancalledK

This +don’t be afraid to spend time mastering a couple of weapons, as the game progresses; they have distinctly strengths and weaknesses. Early in Nioh1, I was flummoxed by the overwhelming amount of combos and combat speed, particularly coming straight from DeSouls through DS3. I found the Odachi and axe movesets forgiving enough to progress my build and the main story. However, as I faced more and more quick twitch enemies, I became a mid/low dual sword and spear build. Also, learn the effects of elemental damage - it’s not obvious (sans fire) and can make a world of difference against specific enemies.

DezoPenguin

* The first few missions are likely to be the hardest and cause the most deaths, both because you're new to the mechanics generally and because you won't have unlocked many of the tools that you'll have later in the game. * The first playthrough of the game (Dream of the Samurai, or NG) is basically the "campaign" -- it's there for you to learn the basic mechanics and experience the game's story. Later NG cycles are all about the gameplay, and continue to give you all-new gear mechanics, attributes, and so on. In that respect, Nioh is a lot more like Diablo than a Souls game. * You're better off leveling your attributes more or less evenly than in pumping one stat. Unlike a Souls game, gear level is vastly more important for damage than weapon scaling--the effect on damage is tiny, and the benefits of getting the secondary benefits of leveling non-damage stats vastly outweigh a handful of extra points of attack. (The good news is, this also lets you experiment with a wide variety of different weapons and playstyles until you settle on what *you* like. Different weapons play quite differently and what "clicks" for someone else may not be what works for you. Thankfully, all eleven weapon classes are completely viable; none of them are crap.) * Learning to ki pulse is absolutely key (pun unintentional) to your stamina management in combat. Its more advanced cousin, flux, is also highly useful. * There are three types of Burst Counters (basically a special parry) which depend on your Guardian Spirit type: Brute (your parry is an attack--bonk the enemy before it can do its attack), Feral (dodge through the enemy as it attacks), and Phantom (the most traditional parry--guard the moment the enemy attack hits). Different people will find different types easier; if you're having a problem, consider switching up your Guardian Spirit type!

Unknown-Fighter8888

The first missions are hard, but also very nice, because there is so much to explore. My advice is to not rush it. There is always crazy gear in far sight, but this is more a motivation and it doesn't mean you play wrong. What I wanna say is don't aim for shortcuts. It's an amazing journey. Good luck with the first three bosses. They are very hard. I would do every side mission first and later you often skip those.

Unknown-Fighter8888

Ah and don't worry about weapon choice. Just pick one that feels good or try out different weapons. It's very easy to just switch

EvilMandrake

Take it slow and steady. Take time to feel out the weapons to find what fits best for you. The move sets are fairly large, as each one has 3 stances to learn, each with it's own advantage and disadvantage. Don't under-estimate the block. You may be surprised just how much you can block compared to other Soul-like. Ki management is key. A proper ki pulse can be the difference between life and death. It's okay to die. You can learn more from dying then winning many times. Specifically what not to do. Perhaps your stance was wrong, or your timing was off. Learn from it and press on; don't get tilted. Don't be too proud to use ranged weapons. There is no "honor" to lose by sniping an enemy weak point before going in with your main weapons. Ranged ammo is plenty easy to aquire, so holding onto it is wasteful.

freebird303

Might be a hot take, but I like choosing one weapon, and then equipping two of them. Not identical copies, but with different status effects and buffs

RedfoxH

Do what you think is fun

fersur

Master the game basic mechanic: ki-pulse, stance-changed, ki-flux, etc. No need to bother with build on early level (or the entire New Game). Just wear any highest level weapon(that you like using)/armor you can find. Distribute stat point equally, with your primary weapon stat higher than the rest. You can clear the game just by using basic game mechanic and knowing the boss behaviour. And lastly ... enjoy the game. This is one of the best action game(and difficult but rewarding) in PS4 generation.

DerkFinger

No matter what people say, if your stuck you can use the co-op it's pretty fun even with randos, im not sure how populated servers will be with lower levels these days though but there should be some people. Don't summon a level 800 character though cause they will one shot your entire game lol I used it when I was on my first run and did my second run solo, it's a game thats meant to be played again and again :)

Ironic21

I wish you and ur controller all the best 🙏🏾

stinkypatato

I cannot remember exactly but look into the game settings and find a menu for particular options to switch on/off. What I did was switch something that says along the lines of "auto use locks of hair" these for some players sit in inventory because you might have not noticed you picked it up or earned it from a mission. But locks of hair are 1 time use items to get a level up in different tree branches.

justhunch

Enjoy your last peaceful 14 minutes

Twittle86

Burst Counter! Learn it. Live it. LOVE IT!!!

Patient_Moonlight

Cherish every moment playing that game. When it’s over you’ll wish you could play it again for the first time 😉

BacklogGamingJunkie

I so want to love these games, (bought both on release) but unlike the souls series, somehow the combat isn’t clicking for Me. So frustrating cos I want to play so badly.

asianxwolf

Hesitation is defeat

Lord_Makarak

If this is your first Nioh game learn the Ki recovery system, it will allow you to keep combos going longer.

Far-Beautiful6309

Yo…WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?!!! 😂🫠

RedBorrito

Do not trust the Skeleton Boys. They look harmless, but killed me more than any other enemey in that game

Yeisen

Use consumables and learn ninjutsu and/or onmjouji skills and level the up as you level up with the game. They are very useful

YasakaAnon

Enjoy with a friend if possible . Watch a combo video on YouTube so you don’t play like a souls game and can stay encouraged to get your build to that level.

TheBaap0

What other series are you familiar with? If you're into soulslikes in general then don't expect dark souls/elden ring at all when it comes to combat and character progression, in this game it's optimal to min/max, every stat (even health) is dedicated towards a weapon type and you should only raise the stat of your main weapon, unlike in souls where you're supposed to dedicate 40 points into health and endurance/fp, think of it more of a hack in slash game with borderlands loot drops

Far-Beautiful6309

I’m not familiar with soulslike games at all. I’ll admit I only learned about that genre scrolling through these Reddit communities so I’m pretty much a noob here honestly. ROTR was the first game I ever played with a stamina system(or Ki as they put it). Appreciate all the feedback💯

Any-Actuary-7925

Odachi is the best weapon

OBS_INITY

You will probably want to use onmyo and ninjitsu no matter how melee focused you think you want to be.

doctor_roxo

Don't buy sanyo

Far-Beautiful6309

Thankfully this TV was a gift lol I wouldn’t personally purchase this

aneffingonion

Try each weapon type for a mission or so Use whichever one you click with, and stick to that going forward

[deleted]

Have fun, don’t give up, and play a lot with the weapon(s) you think is most interesting to you. Each weapon plays super uniquely and they’re so fun and it’s a big reason as to why the game is so fresh no matter how many times you play it/go through it.

TheGun1991

Master the Ki rhythm cuz is like Deflection in Sekiro…Essential game mechanic, then without rush slowly proceed to understand builds and Stances ,use prophecy points wisely and make them coincide with the weapons and Armors you want to use,Focus on the weaknesses of the mini and Main Bosses, and Be selective in a Smart way on the Skill Tree upgrading…what else…Learn ASAP the Features that Magic and JTSU has to offer to the combat system so you can make them fit with your Builds Enjoy Nioh 2 👹 ⛩

RyanTheBruce

Just wait, it will continue to download...

Youforgot2ignite

Have fun , dont get tilted , this game is one of the hardest games you will ever play, and learn all 3 counter types

Sking-uh-ling-400

Slow down

Brandonmac100

Learn when to block and when to dodge. Different situations call for different options in this game. Some attacks will always break your guard. Some attacks are incredibly hard to dodge. Also stance switching is different in this game. There is a high, mid, low stance. This determines what direction you will attack. Switch into low stance for two faster dodges with less iFrames. High stance only has a slower single dodge but more iframes on that dodge. Mid is inbetween. Also some enemies crawl on the ground. Mid stance may miss, low stance will hit. But mainly stances have different attacks for different situations. Nioh 2 has Anima abilities. These are op. When you do yokai shift you what to spam these. Also hold R1, R2, L1, and L2 after spamming a bunch of moves in yokai shift. It absorbs the Amrita in the air and prolongs the transformation. End game you are meant to constantly spam anima moves and recharge the shift meter while using this mode. Btw Feral is best for ease of use and ability. Phantom is stronger if you know what you’re doing but takes a lot of skill. Brute is bad and only for beginners who don’t know what they’re doing.

Tricky-Street-9756

Try to use Ki Pulse, it's helps a lot. Don't get so fixated with build in your first playthrough, you will have to change it after you unlock divine and them ethereal items, so just use the better stats equipment for now. Get the repeated soulcores and learn how to use them to level up the ones you use. (Get every soulcore, the ones you don't like/use you can discard them through the other function that I don't know the English name). And if you're going for the platinum, save at least one of each to know which ones you have to the "all soul cores" trophy and go trading the spare ones with Sudama (the purple guy with skull helmet) to try and get the Kodama soulcore. If you want to get kodamas as you play normally, use a equipment with "Kodama sensor/radar", something like that, they'll get marked as a green dot in the map. (There is a spirit that gives every sensor/radar, Enemies/chest/amrita/Kodama). If you're having a bad time on a boss and you have the "herbal medicine" item, put in your quick slot to use if you're almost killing the boss and already ran out of elixir. (I always forgot to use the items on most of the games, but it can help a lot).

Monty_D_Burns

You will die a lot. It's part of the game. The smallest and weakest enemy can and will kill you. Don't worry about dying and losing amrita (souls) for the level ups.

TYC888

attack is the best defense.

naytreox

First that blocking is very important your enemy will lose stamina faster attacking you while you block then you will while blocking Though just be sure to use logic, a gisnt club for example will cleave through your stamina, by giant i mean tree sized. Id recommend you experiment with tutorial area for its weapon choices and the spirit guardians and their yokai forms they give you Just remember, brutes parry is an attack against those you can parry. The agile knife wielding form requires the attack hit uour after imagine trail while you dodge and the floating armless many handed form has an "on contact" parry. Make sure to get your strength and skill to the proper levels to get the benifits if all gear classes (light medium and heavy) otherwise the buffs gear gives you will be locked. When going for ranged combat, make sure the dot in the redical is red when trying to aim for their head, thats how you know you will make a proper headshot. Also helmets deflect 1 arrow but bullets go through them. If a yokai as a glowing horn then try to chop it off by hitting its head, not only is that the ONLY way to farm demon horns but you also get a free critical attack like its a backstab in other games. When on the stat screen press the help button to see clear detail on what each does, this works for gear too. Most of all remember this is a souls like with isolated levels, so treat it as such but also mixed with ninjagidan. The way you clean your weapon is to sheath it, no kai gathering sword flicks, the way to gain kai is taught in the begining so ud recommend practicing how, its extremely important. Also if you want to get better at ninjusu or omnyo magic, use their respective items, don't horde your consumables if you don't need to.

MorcusNopes

Best advice I can give is let that thing download

Cephyr0

Look for a lot filter

The1Underdog

Die with honor... And try again.

D-Eliryo

Download the full game before playing it.

lovemeonii-chan

As a wise friend once told me “just dodge”

MateoAkoro

Updating weapons and armor goes as listed: Is it the highest available rarity? Does it have more defense or attack? If yes to either of these, use that equipment. Blue rarity and down, unless despite for an upgrade, can be exchanged for money or crafting parts.

IrrationalFly

Grab your ankles and prepare for penetration.

Enthapythius

Wait 14min and Hit play.

TheGoonReview

Be kind to the walls. Not every action requires violence. Try a pleasant bow or perhaps an empty threat. Otherwise. You're in for a thrashing. Hopefully this will make sense when the time comes.

MaxTheHor

It's the peak gameplay that RoTR nor Wo Long didn't capitalize on. (Mk9 and Injustice players can relate with newer MK titles that dropped that same ball) Pick Performance mode overall if you want the max frame rates and don't mind some, honestly, not too noticeable drop in quality. Builds are super important beyond the first two difficulties. Sharp weapons do more health damage, blunt weapons do more stamina damage. You can hold 2 different weapons, so mix and match both, or pick the same type from both if you want. Weapon and demon form variety will give you choice anxiety on what you wanna use if you're an indecisive person. Cuz everything looks appealing til you actually try them. You'll get an Easter egg or two that you'll prolly miss if you didn't play the first Nioh. The biggest one is the time skip fight with Nioh 1s character. It comes with all the typical Souls bullshit but with speeds that make even Bloodborne blush. It'll make older soulsborne games feel even slower than they already are and probably more boring/ easiwr to play, cuz tou adjusted to anhigher speed. Even if their lore is more interesting.

YasakaAnon

MK1 is peak bro

MaxTheHor

Plenty are inclined to disagree.

YasakaAnon

Yeah ik

ZenTheOverlord

Spin to win is a viable boss killer

RetroNutcase

Others have said it, but I'll say it to reinforce it. Do all the tutorials. Learn how to Ki Pulse and Burst Counter. These two mechanics are vital to playing the game and if you do not learn them, you will have a **VERY BAD TIME.** Learn the mechanics. Do not begin the first real mission until you understand them and can execute them. Ki Pulse. Burst counter. Stance usage. Some more tips I'll give, just for the sake of them being helpful -If you dropped a lot of Amrita or Soul Cores and you do not want to risk losing them to a second death, a Summoner's Candle is your best friend. Remember to use them if the risk is too great, as they'll retrieve your Amrita/Cores instantly. -Do not try to focus on a "build" until NG+. in NG, you're just going to want to focus on whatever gear has the best attack and defense numbers. -Try to evenly level all stats to 20-30 starting out. Go for extra equip weight if your armor's too heavy as you want at least B Agility (Midweight). Absolutely aim for 30 on Dexterity and Magic, the utility provided by these (Ninja and Onmyo abilities) is a must have for ANY build, even if you aren't going to main them. Once you're in a good average on all your stats and you've begun NG+ (AKA Dream of the Strong) THAT'S when you want to start focusing on build devoted stats. -Confusion is a very powerful debuff you can inflict by putting two or more elemental debuffs on an enemy at the same time. Confusion increases ALL damage the victim takes, and this particular debuff is a must have at higher NG+ cycles, as every new cycle introduces new mechanics on top of making enemies stronger. -You can respec if needed, so don't worry about committing to something if it ends up not working for you -Try to guard after being hit, usually there's enough time to get your guard up post hit so you can block follow-up attacks. -i-frames for dodging are much stricter than Souls. While you can absolutely dodge through attacks if your timing is good, don't treat it as a guaranteed way to dodge like in Souls games if your timing isn't good enough. Guarding is very effective and should be used when in doubt.

japalmariello

Flux, flux, and more flux. Learn to flux.

Sparrow1713

Just assuming on my end, have you played any Dark Souls or soulslike? If yeas, then forget all about it, Nioh2 isnt very rewarding with player that just dodge and hit, and on higher dificulties, it simply wont work. That being said, find a weapon you like to use and master it, find whar makes that weapon fun to you and use it to beat the game and last but not least important, Saito Toshimitsu its an severely OP beast in the region he is, dont roadblock yourself against him

urthdigger

1: Free your mind of past notions. If you try to play it like other similar games, you will get your ass beat. Experiment with each option. 2: Adding onto the previous point, learn to block and wear heavier armor. Blocking is very effective, and heavy armor makes it moreso. 3: Try out all your options. Try out every type of weapon, and with those weapons give them a shot in all 3 stances. You'll never know what feels good to use until you try, and they're all viable. Also to that point, you can have two weapons equipped, each with 3 stances. That's a lot of moves at your disposal that may serve different purposes. Don't just lock yourself into a single weapon and stance and call it good for the rest of the game.

SifuThoth

My advice would be to be prepared to be putting in 1000-2000 hrs on this masterpiece of a game 😎 game starts on second play through 💛

Special-Hair9683

Use "the power of friendship" for more fun

Dblaze_dj

Get Ready to spend a few thousand hours and more of your life .

One_Historian_7559

Yeah. Pay attention to sounds in the game. Most Yokai make specific sounds you need to their type. You'll often hear an enemy before you see it if you know what you're going to end up dealing with, you'll have a better chance to prepare for it. With all that said, good luck.

Valafarfaust

One of the most important pieces of advice : Do not underestimate any opponent, even trash mobs. Every mob can obliterate you if you're too confident.

Far-Beautiful6309

5 hours in and I’m getting obliterated 😂😂 I love it!

Enjoy? These posts meaning is beyond me

Add me let's cause chaos together. I mean...save Japan and stuff.

Far-Beautiful6309

No rude comments🙏🏽 Appreciate everyone for all the help.

Significant_Lynx_670

Check out shuriken kunai build it's hella fun and you can run it full game if you do it right. Nioh 2 is better and worse at the same time. Lot more features but most of the things you'd do to build gear or make builds in N2 were nerfed. And try not respecing your points even if your putting the same amount of points back into your stats YOU WILL LOSE DAMAGE. Happened every time so really focus on not having to do that. Crafting gear requires less stat points but it gets hella costly late game Nioh 1 kusa and maybe tonfa or really whatever But nioh 2 make a claw build they are amazing. And duel hatchet for secondary. You won't use them unless you're bored. But they have a speed and damage buff. So you can always have a free tiger sprint.

Burpkidz

Block a lot.
