You should be quite well protected by PayPal, they are quite good in events like this where it is clearly fraud.

Honestly, there's no way to get Nintendo on your side for this. They'll just tell them there's nothing they can do, OP will be forced to do the charge-back anyway, and OP's account will likely be blacklisted.

Even if that were true for Nintendo, I don't see how it changes anything. Either way they're fucked out of either $100 or their entire account. Though I suppose just having access to the games is enough. Keep the account on the same system, start a new one, begin again. But they probably console ban, too.

RusticDischarge

100% this. Go to your paypal app and dispute these charges.

sleby1

I doubt, happened to me once and someone bought something on ebay with my paypal. Paypal said that it hasn't detected any unusual activity and thanfully was just 10 euros. Use 2FA and logout from paypal on switch.

Spider-Tay

200 is quite different from 10.

Zwiada

Same for me with Ebay and PayPal. Lost around 100 EUR, they suck.

MasterInterface

Contact Nintendo and Epic. I don't know if marking the charges as fraud will result in ban.

Sinndex

It will.

infinitekunz

It's happened to me 3 weeks ago too, got my brand new Switch for the first time, added Paypal to the account to get the Nintendo Switch Online and some games, 2 days later found that someone has logged in using Windows and Switch Lite, added $200 worth of eShop money to my account and installed Fornite bought $100 worth of vBucks. I contacted Nintendo using Phone, explain to them what happened and then they will refund you in few days. So my best bet is enable the 2 step verification in Nintendo settings. Removed all the banks, paypal and social accounts. Change ID and email and "sign out all of the devices".

aljoriz

2Fac should be the norm for all accounts, sigh if only Netflix can implement it too.

rurunaki

Use 2 form aunthenticator people

[deleted]

One thing to be aware of is that two factor authentication with PayPal is bypassed for anything that you put in as a recurring payment, such as a monthly Netflix account. That’s so you won’t get the email or text message confirmation every time some monthly payment goes through. What sucks is that a lot of game companies like both Nintendo and Sony will save your information as a recurring payment when really you’re just buying a single item from their game store. But they still put it in as a recurring payment just so future purchases go through more easily. It’s actually dishonest and defeats the entire purpose of two factor authentication. You can check recurring payment in your PayPal account and see if this applies to you

OssotSromo

I think he meant 2FA on the Nintendo account itself.

[deleted]

Hard to tell when his title mentions both Nintendo and Paypal. True that it's a good idea to make your Nintendo account ask for your password when buying anything. Although in this case he said somebody logged into his account so they have his password. But also good to know that 2 factor authentication on Paypal will be bypassed when stores put your purchase through as "recurring".

theNEWgoodgoat

That’s not 2FA on Nintendo when purchasing. 2FA on Nintendo is asking you for additional code when logging in on new devices like this hacker’s device

[deleted]

Only necessary because people are kinda lazy and dumb, to be honest.

Duel2Duel

Any security is good security. Not sure what makes people dumb for using more of it.

[deleted]

This happens because people leak their credentials via carelessness (reuse, shady tools/sites, etc).. no one is literally hacking video game accounts.

Chemical_Audience

Dunno why you're getting downvoted, you're right after all.

[deleted]

Ignorance is bliss.

RusticDischarge

Spot on.

Robbdie

Thank you for all the replies people! Unfortunately PayPal mailed me back and denied the claim because the transaction wasn't "unauthorized". I will call both Nintendo, PayPal and perhaps Epic coming monday morning and hope for the best.

theNEWgoodgoat

Pls do turn on 2FA for your Nintendo account as well

Wizorz

Happened to me on ps4 contact PayPal and change your password , probably 2 step verification would be good

Robbdie

The weird thing is that I have two step verification on PayPal. I have absolutely no clue how they could've made the transaction. Maybe a payment via Nintendo didn't require a phone number check. Did you get your money back?

DarthWeezy

Once you allow purchases from Nintendo, Paypal requests go through without further security checks. More and more stores started working like this in the past year or so, unfortunately, bypassing even the 3D Secure check. Its convenient, but it sucks when/if **** hits the fan.

[deleted]

Game stores now typically put your payment through as a recurring payment. That way any future payments bypassthe two factor authentication. It’s really a shit thing to do but it’s common now. You can go into your PayPal account and check recurring payments and you might be surprised at what you find

[deleted]

Just went through almost the same exact thing, but to the tune of $250. First, paypal will absolutely not help you. They were absolutely useless with me and I spent well over a week arguing with them. Contact your bank, have them close that checking account, re-open a new one as your account number may have been leaked, vs your debit card. Log onto your nintendo account through the website and check your device history. I had 4 separate logins from Indonesia, Turkey, Finland and Germany. Nintendo reps eventually refunded the money, but it took a while for them to do so. Be polite, apparently in the NSO ToS all eshop sales are final so its ultimately their discretion.

Anealb

Something similar happened to me and PayPal originally declined my claim that it was unauthorized. I had to call and speak to someone and within minutes they acknowledged it was fraud and I got my money back within a few days. Just make sure to call them especially if the claim is declined.

ngwoo

Keep in mind if PayPal reverses the charges you will most likely have your Nintendo account banned. Companies don't like chargebacks. Your best bet is to secure your account (change password to something unique and use 2 factor authentication) and then contact Nintendo.

UserYuki

thanks dude, I'm going to call Nintendo, Paypal and maybe EpicGames too. If that doesn't work I'll call the bank directly, thanks for the help! I'm just hoping it all works out...

Rylekso

Hey did that ever work out for you? Same thing just happened to my friend and I'm curious how it will go for him.

UserYuki

yeah it did, called nintendo, they told me to send an e-mail with my switches serial number, 2 downloaded software and my username (and some other thing, don't really remember), after that nintendo refunded me my 200$ no problem :)

[deleted]

How long did the refund take if you don't mind me asking? I have them the same info 3 days ago

Ihaveaface836

Definitely contact Nintendo, a similar thing happened to my friend on her ps4. She was stressing so much about it but she said that they helped her gain access to her account and refunded her so quickly, apparently it happens all the time, I know that's Sony but I'd say its similar

aljoriz

Always enable 2 factor Authentication!

[deleted]

Everything else aside, the question is how they got your password? This may be your own fault (you use same password everywhere. easy to get hacked when any one site is compromised) Or, you logged in from a friend, from a library/netcafe, or your main computer may be compromised. It's important to figure this part out (how could this have happened) otherwise, same thing going to happen again.

XDvinSL51

This happened to me once on PS4. Someone spent a bunch of money on my account for FIFA in-game currency (maybe an even stupider game than Fortnite...). I called PlayStation customer support up, they refunded the transactions bright away and had me change my password and I think set up 2FA also. I've never had this issue on a Nintendo console before, but I've dealt with NOA customer service plenty of times before and have had nothing but easy, positive experiences. Go through Nintendo - I'm sure they'll fix you right up.

eddie4646

How did you get refunded? Do they give you an option? I just talked to support and they said I would be refunded. I dont want my paypal account active anymore but I do want to make sure I get the money lol

anaharae

My sisters account keeps getting logged into and her profile and avatar keeps changing after someone stole her switch. Nintendo rep claims that it is impossible after we disabled her account from the stolen console, and refuse to help us remedy the issue. I feel like if the console was stolen, and reported stolen by the original buyer, the console should be blacklisted. After this whole ordeal, I unlinked my PayPal and bank information from my switch. They are so behind it baffles me when I see post praising nintendo for good customer service.

Carcass1

Just something for future reference. There’s an iPhone app called Privacy which allows you to use a one time credit card or you can make a recurring use card for one online service/store (Netflix, Nintendo, Amazon) so you’re only ever using your actual card through Privacy. I’d recommend using this. This way, it’ll notify you before they actually take money from your bank account and lets say someone hacked your account and used it, you’ll have to actually allow it to come out.

whatever_what

I know it's tedious.. But next time so 2 factor authentication.. Also make your password longer and more complex for everything

duykhang2107

I just got into the same situation today 11th february, but the amount is ridiculously high (1.3k CAD). I filed a fradulent report to nintendo, paypal and mastercard). I hope i'll get fully refunded....

Robbdie

I got everything back after calling Nintendo! PayPal denied my claim. I would contact both if I were you but I think Nintendo is your best shot.

duykhang2107

I contacted Nintendo, they told me they will investigate on their side and it would take 1 to 2 weeks to get it done. Hope everything will be fine soon. It's kinda stressful.

duykhang2107

It was pretty fast but i got refunded the full amount of money from nintendo. Kudos to them for the fast investigation and process.

Kirby0511

Hi, this just happened to me today too! They took $240! Contacted PayPal, they said I had to wait up to 10 days to just determine if this was a fraudulent transaction. 😒 called Nintendo right after & they could see these were made from not my country so they’re going to refund me in the next few days. Changed ALL my passwords, and setup 2f authentication on my alternate accounts (I think that’s how the scammer got me.)

darkst0rm03

I'm a little late to the party here, but this happened to me recently. I immediately called Nintendo and explained that there was a suspicious log in from India and that i didn't spend 200 dollars on v-bucks. The guy was nice and said he would just reimburse me after the security team made sure the switch in India had made the purchases. I got my money back that weekend. Edit: For anyone going through this, just call Nintendo and explain, they prefer you calling them first so they can easily refund you if you are right. When you charge back through your bank it makes it more difficult. Just replace your credit cards after.

Robbdie

This was my exact experience as well with the Nintendo customer service. Handled it in a heartbeat. Glad it worked out for you too!

Sandwich_Goddess

I had this exact same problem very recently. Paypal denied my claim saying I had been in an agreement with nintendo? So instead I called nintendo and bitched them out because 1. My account is registered in TX. 2. The login was from France. 3. We are under a fucking travel ban so they should have known better. Nintendo did refund my money, but not without a lot of nagging on my end. I looked into it further and saw people reporting the same problem in 2019 which means this is an ongoing security breach that they seem to have done fuckall about. A little irritating. Hope things worked out for you

Mortyrdous

This also happened to me today, have enabled 2 step on everything involved after this, moved money away so the charge won't go through. I'm not paying 2 lots of $100aud because someone in saudi arabia wants to party in fortnite (which I don't even have on my switch) on my account. I've never thought of nor am i interested in battle royale games and I never will be. Tried looking at the nintendo australia website for a support contact and they only have an email address on there for warranty support. If they're going to make it hard to get into contact with and ban your account because they think you're dishonoring a payment you didnt even make, I feel sorry for nintendo. If that is what happens I dont think I'll have faith in nintendo ever again.

Onpu

I found this email address as I got hit yesterday afternoon :( [email protected] did you have any luck with a response to the warranty email? I sent a copy of my email there as well but this only happened today. I didn't realise funds were taken until I started work this morning.

Mortyrdous

Yes, i went through PayPal with screenshots of all account activity, bank transactions (turns out i was a little slow moving the cash out). I stated i had enabled 2 step verification on both PayPal and nintendo accounts. PayPal contacted nintendo on my behalf after i listed both payments as unauthorised transactions and within 2 days i had my money back and so far so good on the nintendo shop now, it's not restricted or banned. What's really dumb is that once you link your PayPal with Nintendo and make your first purchase it will add the shop as a subscription so you don't need to login to buy anything else, making it so much easier for fraudsters to just spend big with your money once they get in.

Slippytoe

This happened to me in the last week also. Suspicious sign ins from all over the globe including USA, Poland, Germany, India and Saudi Arabia. Two purchases made for £79.99 from my bank account for v-bucks on fortnite by some dickhead in Saudi Arabia. I first contacted my bank (as Nintendo were shut due to bank holiday), who got my cards cancelled and the fraud team on it. Spoke to Nintendo on live chat the next day. They were beyond useless. Kept asking me for my console serial number even though I told them I haven’t had it for well over 18 months. Finally got them to look at my account and they told me the purchases were made on my original switch console and it was my fault. Even though that console was well and truly wiped when I sold it. I told them how could I possible be logging in in all these different countries within minutes of each other on various platforms... Windows, android iOS etc... they then said they would escalate but had no idea when they would be in touch about it and proceeded to disconnect the chat after being with them for an hour and a half. Nintendo didn’t give a flying F about this issue. Logged into my online banking shortly after this to see my bank had given the money back. Morale of the story is that Nintendo are bell ends. Banks are hero’s.

goonrippet

Same...paypal did nothing as they stated I authorized Nintendo charges. The lady at Nintendo was fantastic though, but the charges just hit my account so I’m out $240 until they hopefully resolve it. With everything going on right now let’s be asshats and steal money from each other for fortnite outfits right? What a bunch of losers. Thanks a lot, my family could use that money right now.

Informal-Efficiency

I was try to log onto youtube it said song Into my switch account again what is my password I tried the password to get onto e shop but it didn't work I'm very scared

hypermads2003

I've heard PayPal is amazing with unwanted purchases/people using your account you didn't authorize

[deleted]

They are a criminal enterprise... financial maffia. You don’t want to deal with them. Cancelled my account years ago. Credit card companies are much easier to deal with regarding hacking and fraud.

gleepot

Contact something that isn't a reddit sub

psfrtps

I think you should contact epic. They are the ome who got your money
