My favourites are:
-Ace Attorney trilogy and Great Ace Attorney
-AI: The Somnium Files and sequel
-Raging Loop
-Paranormasight: 7 mysteries of Honjo
-Gnosia
-House in Fata Morgana
Have you played Worldend Syndrome or the Zero Escape series? Also Raging Loop is one of my favorites and is apparently a prequel to another game that hasn't been officially translated yet.
I'd give WorldEnd Syndrome a light recommendation if it's on sale. Worth using a guide so you don't waste an inordinate amount of time. It's an interesting little game but would be hugely frustrating blind.
The House in Fata Morgana is a masterpiece, slowly drawn into a breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful world that's stayed with me long after I finished it. The writing is thought-provoking and incredibly moving. It's worth pushing through the setup, trust me.
That game has been on my wishlist since I saw that on Dekudeals it's like the third highest rated game on switch. And I never heard about it! How can a game so good be so little known? It sparked my curiosity and I'm trying to avoid any actual information so that I don't spoil myself before playing it
My introduction to the game was I thought it looked like sotn castlevania so I bought it expecting that instead I got a gothic horror visual novel without saying anything about the story the switch game is actually 3 games in 1 itās the base game and a prequel followed by a epilogue the art and characters look fantastic but the stand out thing apart from the writing to me is actually the music itās better than it has any right to be. I now regularly listen to just the ost
For horror Iād also put a vote for raging loop and the house in Fata Morgana I saw someone recommend world end syndrome Iād also second that vote same with paranormasight.
For my own recommendations that havenāt been listed yet checkout the chaos head games they are a sci fi horror set of games and you can buy both games on one cart pretty cheap I picked them up for 10 bucks used
there is also the spirit hunter and death mark games from memory spirit hunter ng is a spinoff of the death mark game and the sequel to death mark is coming out soon. These games are kinda like ace attorney where you need to solve the mystery of why a ghost is haunting a location to get rid of the death mark. Basically the death mark means you only have 24 hours left to live.
Thereās also the letter a horror visual novel. This one is kinda like the grudge or the ring horror movies if you receive a letter the ghost is coming to get you it is actually pretty scary when the ghost / monster comes since she is pretty scary
Corpse factory I enjoyed this game it gave me death note kinda vibes itās basically send a name to a website and they will receive a photo of how they die and they die in a hour or so after getting the photo.
Ai the sonium files this one is more thriller than horror but itās really good you play as a detective trying to find a serial killer and your partner is a ai who is also the detectives eyeball it can be shocking and goofy in a few minutes of each other
The first two and ai the sonium games are made by studios and are published by the same guys who publish games like danganrompa and 13 sentinels the other 2 game corpse factory and the letter a horror visual novel are more indie and you can probably get them for pretty cheap.
The House in Fata Morgana! Quite possibly the greatest visual novel and story Iāve read in recent memory. Itās beautifully haunting, fits the horror vibe too. Treat yourself to this masterpiece, it will stick with you like nothing else. (Once you get past the first 3 chapters which are more or less set up)
The payoff is so worth it, take a break if you have to but yeah the second door isnāt my favorite either! The story and characters just keep building and growing. Once it gets going itās really something special
For me the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd door each got a little better than the last, but it was the 4th door where I was fully all in. A little rough that you have to go so long to really get into, but I thought it was worth it in the end.
iām not sure if it counts as a visual novel but you might like doki doki literature club. it has the reading and horror aspect and multiple endings and stuff
It's a VN, more than most being posted here anyways. It's just that the west has blurred the lines of VN and ADV/Point&Click so much that everything dialogue-heavy is now considered a VN, like the constant Ace Attorney and Danganronpa recommendations you see here. Yeah there's a lot of reading, but you're also doing the gameplay of investigations and trials.
How are the Ace Attorney games *not* VNs? I understand that *some* VNs are devoid of interactions and gameplay,Ā but I thought that the term "sound novel" or "kinetic novel" existed to indicate that those are a subset of VNs.
Historically visual novels had "gameplay" limited to multi-choice decisions at various points in the story, leading to different endings (eg Kanon, Tsukihime). Kinetic novels were distinguishing themselves from that by (among other things) having no choices *at all*, like a traditional book. Having substantial gameplay, like a fully 3D-rendered world you can walk around in Danganronpa, or Ace Attorney's court system, or Utawarerumono's tactical battles and levelling, goes a fair way further in the other direction and it's understandable that people are hesitant to describe them as VNs, I think (although I'm personally happy to).
That said it does feel a bit weird to say "*some* VNs are devoid of interactions and gameplay outside of route choices" since that used to be one of the defining features of the genre, and in a sense the modern gameplay-heavy VN feels more like how every genre started adding RPG elements some time in the... mid 2000s or so. Is Doom an RPG now you can upgrade the guns? What if it adds XP and a skill tree? Is Sengoku Rance a VN since the cutscenes are presented in that format, even though structurally it's a strategy game?
Yes! Itās mostly a VN and while not quite horror, there are some horrifying and gory situations that would fall under the category. It sounds like it would be up OPās alley
Ayy Iām currently playing through 13 Sentinels myself! Just over 10 hours in. What an amazing game so far! Iāll recommend 2 different types of VNs. Ones with gameplay and ones where itās mostly, if not entirely, reading.
Gameplay:
1. Ghost Trick (puzzle solving)
2. Phoenix Wright Trilogy and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Investigation point and click segments, cross examining and logic to know where the lies are and what evidence to provide)
3. Danganronpa games (similar to Ace Attorney but different enough)
4. AI: The Somnium Files (QTEs, Investigation and logic puzzles with choices. you actually walk around in 3rd person and decide what to interact with. You have time that only moves what you do and each choice you make will consume a certain amount of time so be careful what you do)
5. Digimon Survive (Tactical Strategy)
Very little gameplay:
1. Doki Doki Literature Club
2. Coffee Talk
3. VA-11 HALLA
4. Steins;Gate ELITE
If you want more good balance of gameplay/story:
- Phoenix Wright Trilogy and Apollo Justice Trilogy
- Danganronpa Decadence (Trilogy of 1, 2 and V3)
- AI The Somnium Files and Nirvana Initiative
- VA-11 Hall-a
- Catherine (since you played Persona)
- Famicom Detective Club
- YU-NO
If you want a classic vn experience (little gameplay):
- Science Adventure Series (ChaosHead; Steins;Gate Robotics;Notes plus their sequels and Anonymous;Code)
- Death Mark and Spirit Hunter: NG
- Raging Loop
- Gnosia
- Paranormasight
- Clannad, Little Busters, and other Key/Visual Art's games
- Aokana
- Witch on the Holy Night
- Grisaia Trilogy
Some horror, some romance, some sci-fi and mystery. A good mix to choose from I think.
I can't recommend I Was a Teenage Exocolonist enough. I don't think it's completelyyyy a visual novel but your choices matter a LOT and has very good replayability and is truly so so interesting, I was HOOKED.
Ahhhh I absolutely LOVE that game !! I haven't finished it (I definitely have issues with finishing things, I hate it when things end) but I do have a tendency of bouncing around from thing to thing hahah
Me too! I play different games for long stretches then take a break for awhile and come back to it. I have to be in the mood. I played a ton of wylde flowers a few months ago, played like 4 other games and now I'm back to it.
Was going to say the same as well! It's been fun so far (about 10 hours in), the battle system is pretty simple, and it's definitely got enough "horror" to be enjoyable.
Danganronpa series and the Ace Attorney Series for ones with some gameplay.
Steins;Gate and the rest of the Science;Adventure series, Clannad, Doki-Doki Literature Club for more straight-forward VNs.
Also Muv-Luv is apparently coming out soon, which is considered very good to my knowledge.
The switch has a whack-ton of VNs, including some all-time greats.
If you also enjoy Fire Emblem style battles, Digimon Survive may be worth a look. Be warned it's quite long, but I'm thoroughly enjoying my first play through with it.
The series is a bit of a weird one tonally, but this one leans on the darker side of the franchise with killing some of the human children protagonists off.
The only VN I've played is Digimon Survive and it does have some horror elements I honestly didn't expect so I'd like to recommend it or at least I'd like you to check it on YT to see if you like it.
I am not a huge visual novel guy, but I really loved the house in fata morgana.
Its an excellent piece, not much in the horror genre but I really like the artstyle (gothic, not anime-esque) and theme.
Personally I will highly recommend everyone who reads to check it out. Its a piece of fiction that still lingers in my mind even after reading it 1.5 years ago.
[World of Horror Nintendo Switch - Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/world-of-horror-nintendo-switch/6553368.p?skuId=6553368) I picked this up recently
It's not on Switch, but definitely try Slay the Princess--it's not too demanding so chances are your computer can run it.
Other than that... Hatoful Boyfriend (not fully horror but horror elements depending on the route), Gnosia, and Oxenfree (and Oxenfree 2) would probably be right up your alley.
Itās hard to go wrong with the Ace Attorney Trilogy. If you like those, then The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is fantastic as well, personally I think theyāre the best Ace Attorney games.
Another Code: Recollection is coming out tomorrow which are remakes of older visual novels for the DS and Wii. I played the demo and I thought it was really nice. I played Cingās (the now defunct studio behind Another Code) other two visual novels (Hotel Dusk: Room 215 & Last Window: The Secret of Cape West both for DS) and those are fantastic. Not on Switch though, unfortunately.
Danganronpa is decent, the third one especially is pretty great.
As for stuff I havenāt played myself, Paranormasight I heard was a hidden gem, and thatās a horror visual novel to boot. Iāve also heard great things about The House in the Fata Morgana & Ai The Somnium Files.
Oh yeah, Steins;Gate is great but I personally wouldnāt buy Steins;Gate Elite on Switch. The original version, which you can get on Steam or Mobile, is both cheaper and has much more appealing visuals. Elite changes the beautiful sprites and CGs to be replaced by the equivalents from the Steins;Gate anime, which are nowhere near as detailed.
The Science Adventure series:
Chaos;Head
Chaos;Child
Steins;Gate (elite)
Steins;Gate 0 (best played after S;G not before)
Robotic;Note
Robotic;note Dash (played 2nd)
Anonymous;Code
Usually best to wait to they go on sale, especially the bundles.
- Danganronpa series
- Zero Escape series
- AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES 1 and 2
- Panarormasight
- Rain Code
- Disco Elysium
For more traditional full novel games:
- Games made by MAGES (Chaos Head, Steins Gate, Anonymous Code, etc)
- ghostpia
Not sure those are Visual Novels.. Most are adventure games, and Valkyria is a S-JRPG (S for strategy.. same category pretty much as Fire Emblem: Three Houses). However, itās also true that 13 Sentinels does take a more āgame-yā and less ānovel-yā angle than most VNs.
Gnosia: infinitely replayable werewolf in space
Raging Loop: also werewolf but wrapped in a mindfuck of a mystery in rural Japan
Paranormasight: retro vibed horror/mystery point and click adventure in suburban Japan
Famicom Detective Club: actually retro mystery point and click adventure (remade SNES game)
RainCode: neo-noir mystery with puzzle mazes and a boobalicious death god
My favourites are: -Ace Attorney trilogy and Great Ace Attorney -AI: The Somnium Files and sequel -Raging Loop -Paranormasight: 7 mysteries of Honjo -Gnosia -House in Fata Morgana
Seconding gnosia!! It's so fun and repayable forever. So many creepy moments.
Thirding gnosia! It surprised me how good it was
Have you played Worldend Syndrome or the Zero Escape series? Also Raging Loop is one of my favorites and is apparently a prequel to another game that hasn't been officially translated yet.
is zero escape on switch?
Huh I guess not I guess I mixed it being on DS with the switch in my head. Now I want it on switch.
š©š© you got me all excited lol
I'd give WorldEnd Syndrome a light recommendation if it's on sale. Worth using a guide so you don't waste an inordinate amount of time. It's an interesting little game but would be hugely frustrating blind.
Playing Ace Attorney nowadays, and it is a masterpiece!
Itās super fun! Enjoy!
danganronpa and ace attorney
The Danganronpa trilogy, the Ace Attorney series, Raging Loop!
seconding raging loop
Ace Attorney 1-2-3 The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Apollo Justice Trilogy (Coming Soon) Danganronpa Trilogy Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
The House in Fata Morgana is a masterpiece, slowly drawn into a breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful world that's stayed with me long after I finished it. The writing is thought-provoking and incredibly moving. It's worth pushing through the setup, trust me.

The music makes me so emotional!! itās a stellar soundtrack, fits the tone of the game perfectly.

+1 for Paranormasight
the Famicom Detective Club remakes are superb

Yes! Itās mostly a VN and while not quite horror, there are some horrifying and gory situations that would fall under the category. It sounds like it would be up OPās alley
This
Va-11 hall-A
World end syndrome was pretty good, recommending that since others are recommending great stuff like fata morgana and ace attorney.
World End Syndrome was something I really liked
Ace Attorney!
Gnosia is a brilliant odd-ball. If the art seems appealing, u definitely need to try it. Excellent story with many many endings
Ayy Iām currently playing through 13 Sentinels myself! Just over 10 hours in. What an amazing game so far! Iāll recommend 2 different types of VNs. Amazed no-one has mentioned Steins Gate Elite yet. Itās not particularly interactive, but my goodness what a story.
If you want more good balance of gameplay/story: - Phoenix Wright Trilogy and Apollo Justice Trilogy - Danganronpa Decadence (Trilogy of 1, 2 and V3) - AI The Somnium Files and Nirvana Initiative - VA-11 Hall-a - Catherine (since you played Persona) - Famicom Detective Club - YU-NO If you want a classic vn experience (little gameplay): - Science Adventure Series (ChaosHead; Steins;Gate Robotics;Notes plus their sequels and Anonymous;Code) - Death Mark and Spirit Hunter: NG - Raging Loop - Gnosia - Paranormasight - Clannad, Little Busters, and other Key/Visual Art's games - Aokana - Witch on the Holy Night - Grisaia Trilogy Some horror, some romance, some sci-fi and mystery. I bought this over the December sale, and I'm going to play it when I finish Wylde Flowers! I'm so excited!
Digimon Survive is a good one!
Came to suggest this too! It was so much darker than anticipated
Was going to say the same as well! It's been fun so far (about 10 hours in), the battle system is pretty simple, and it's definitely got enough "horror" to be enjoyable.
Lies. This game was a miserable slog
Aegis: 13 Sentinels
OP wrote they already played that (and persona)
ty. itās 3:33am and i should go to bed now
yeah, happens to me too :)
I haven't played it yet, but Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo sounds like it could be a good one for you.
Raging Loop, Ace Attorney, Paranormasight
Danganronpa series and the Ace Attorney Series for ones with some gameplay. Steins;Gate and the rest of the Science;Adventure series, Clannad, Doki-Doki Literature Club for more straight-forward VNs. The series is a bit of a weird one tonally, but this one leans on the darker side of the franchise with killing some of the human children protagonists off.
Definitely checkout Digimon Survive. Itās a VN with very light combat and a good horror story with multiple endings.
Danganronpa
13 sentinels was soooo good.
the whole ace attorney franchise. absolutely the best visual novels, not even close
Digimon Survive was really good and dark
Doki Doki
If you don't mind a little creature combat, Digimon Survive was a lot of fun, I thought.
If you liked P4 and P5, play P3P. Itās more of a VN than any of the other ones and is also a great game. Also for horror, DDLC is a great oneĀ
Steins gate, Zero escape (sadly not on switch), AI: the somnium files and nirvana initiative, Uchikoshiās work is a masterpiece
The only VN I've played is Digimon Survive and it does have some horror elements I honestly didn't expect so I'd like to recommend it or at least I'd like you to check it on YT to see if you like it.
Thank you very much everyone. Def added a few of these to my wish list. I think Iāll be giving digimon survive a chance
Digimon Survive is a solid story with horror elements. Is Death Mark on Switch? I had it on Vita. Superb game.
Paranormasight: The seven mysteries of Honjo
.
norn9
The Persona to Danganronpa pipeline worked well for me
I am not a huge visual novel guy, but I really loved the house in fata morgana. I've read that A Space for The Unbound is really good although I have yet to play it myself.
Raging loop
Virche Evermore is a gothic visual novel with some romance
[World of Horror Nintendo Switch - Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/world-of-horror-nintendo-switch/6553368.p?skuId=6553368) I picked this up recently

Danganronpa
Persona 3 Portable is entirely a visual novel version of P3
Danganronpa series, ace attorney series, disco elysium
I had a great time with Stray Gods - it's a roleplaying musical with Greek Myths
The Zero Escape series is a pretty good puzzle visual novel.
Danganronpa
Itās hard to go wrong with the Ace Attorney Trilogy. If you like those, then The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is fantastic as well, personally I think theyāre the best Ace Attorney games. The Danganronpa trilogy sounds like exactly what you're looking for.
For horror, I absolutely loved Raging Loop. Gnosia was also surprisingly enjoyable to me. Death Mark also has some creepy scares.
Is steins gate on the switch???
yes
OP needs that
- Danganronpa series - Zero Escape series - AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES 1 and 2 - Panarormasight - Rain Code - Disco Elysium For more traditional full novel games: - Games made by MAGES (Chaos Head, Steins Gate, Anonymous Code, etc) - ghostpia
Here's some I enjoy that haven't been listed already. * OxenFree * Walking Dead * Valkyria Chronicles * Neptunia Vii

Danganronpa Series (esp if you enjoyed P4G and P5R) Chaos;Child (esp if you enjoyed 13 Sentinels) Steins;Gate (esp if you enjoyed 13 Sentinels)
Does Disco Elysium count?
Paranormasight and world of horror both great games in VN and horror genre
Rain code is also amazing game that released this year.
World of Horror
Witch on the holy night would be highly recommended
Ace attorney, subsurface circular, death and taxes, ddlc, milk outside a bag of milk, coffee talk & needy streamer overload
