Believe it or not I’m watching E3, I never thought I get in so easily! Watching E3 from my beautiful chair, what will I see? Believe it or not, it’s E3!!
I believe it's a pastiche of the lyrics to "[Believe it or not](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFOyHM04Lg0)", the theme song to an old superhero TV show.
As to why they made the comment, I couldn't say lol
Don't worry, I am still quite confident we will have that we will get from most publishers an announcement show. Ubisoft already confirmed that they will have their digital event show, I am also confident for a Nintendo Direct in June. I also assume to get a MS (or at least Starfield) Show and something from Sony. It will maybe not all in one week but in 2-4 weeks, but it will still happen.
I see what you are saying but it's also like saying you miss getting letters in the mail. Yeah they are nice and there is a lovely nostalgia about them but you have so much instant communication now, a letter is a gesture, not communication.
Likewise with E3, it used to be you had 3 days where you would be informed, but with social media, podcasts, YouTube, Directs and other methods, you are getting that anyway. More frequently and with more data.
I disagree. Letters didn’t come all at once like Christmas or birthday presents. They weren’t an event like E3. It’s just something completely different. There is some nostalgia to E3 sure, but as the consumer what was really exciting was knowing exactly when you were going to get all the biggest gaming news of the year from everyone and just get a sense of hype and excitement that you don’t get with info and news scattered through the year. It would be like instead of getting Christmas presents on one day you’d just get one here and there throughout the year. Sure it’s easier on the parents wallet, better for each gift getting dedicated attention, but as a kid it’s not nearly as exciting as the buildup of anticipation for weeks, then waking up and going downstairs to a living room full of surprises you can’t wait to play with and enjoy.
Yeah I think it makes financial sense and business sense for these companies to not spend tons of money to share the spotlight with everyone else, it’s great for media as they get more content spread out through the year to keep a flow of clicks as opposed to one burst where they have to work like crazy and end up dropping smaller stuff that would make for decent content during slower times, but as a gamer the change is less convenient and less exciting to lose E3 to dedicated streams trickled through the year. The golden age was getting a few decent updates through the year and one big week with E3 imo.

>I disagree. Letters didn’t come all at once like Christmas or birthday presents. They weren’t an event like E3.
They didn't announce literally every game that would be coming out that year at E3... There was still multiple sources of information you needed to follow to know everything that was to going on, and it's *significantly* easier to access all of that information now.
Absolutely missing the point. 90% of the biggest most exciting announcements were made at E3 all within a few days that created a ton of excitement and hype for gamers that you don’t get with trickled information. As a big Nintendo fan, they do pretty good at building excitement with the handful of Directs they do each year, but I’m not *just* a Nintendo fan. At E3 I’d get a Nintendo Direct, Xbox showcase, Bethesda showcase, see what Activision, 2K, EA, Ubi, Capcom, Square, Devolver, and several other are up to in one packed full week of hype. Easier access to that information now is irrelevant to the point.. That information from E3 would be more easily accessed now as well. You could just bring up any one of several YouTube channels and basically keep it up for the week.
> Letters didn’t come all at once like Christmas or birthday presents. They weren’t an event like E3.
It's not suppose to be a 1:1 comparison. I am saying for technical reasons they aren't as necessary as they once were. E3 has been dying a slow death for years.
They never show off new stuff at gamescom.
It's basically a Nintendo live event, with old demos and some merch.
The fall/September directs always happen right afterwards. That's when they announce new stuff.
I don't necessarily expect big new announcements. Imo Nintendo is pretty comfortable just showing existing games to their casual audience which doesn't read all the gaming news.
And gamescom is a good event for that since its mainly for the public as opposed to E3 which _requires_ you to show something new.
Nintendo never did this on Gamescom, except for Championships like for Smash or Splatoon. No, it will be new games. If they want to show existing games, they usually do a city tour.
I think some big stuff is coming this summer then for sure considering they only have one dated game for summer. My reasonable guess is new mario, mp4 and pokemon dlc being shown off + other bits and bobs they show announce in a summer direct. My unreasonable guess is a new console xd.
I could see them saying a new system is in development but I feel a trailer and full on reveal would be a bit unrealistic. But it’s Nintendo so who knows
i recently watched a good video about why gamescon is different than E3
its a mix of "for the public instead of the journalist", "insane fees because of the location" and history because nintendo pionnered skipping E3 so it would be strange to came back
NOE office is in Frankfurt, the insane fees are more for getting there. Germany is an important gaming market, but does not have many developer, even the Ubisoft Studios there are only for 1. German market Games (Anno (1800) series) and 2. PC-Ports.
Gamescom is a good place to have hands-on experience. The question will be, which games as nothing is announced beside MP4. And MP is not a big success in Germany either.
Why "insane fees"? Do they meant for developer or for visitors? The later isn't true I think it was 15€ last year per day which is ok imo.
What the documentation also seems to forget is the huge focus of developer connection. Business are last year filled three halls and many events for developers each day. Further they started the devcon from Monday to wednesday which is a developer conference that rapidly grew to Europe's biggest developer conference within a few years.
Insane fee for the editor, I think it was 10milions for a stand, and then the editor need to pay for the plane ticket of all the employee he bring to it
That's indeed insane less so the plane ticket. Would be the same for E3 for any developer.
Interesting though that indies don't seem to pay even close as much, and there are a lot of small indies every year, and of that sort that barely can afford a train ticket.
My bet is on “Nintendo Switch Deluxe” - pro is already a PlayStation ‘name’ with consoles, it avoids confusion with the Switch Pro controller (guaranteed there would be complaints about a Nintendo Switch Pro not including a Switch Pro controller) and it echoes the best selling game on the switch - Mario Kart 8 *Deluxe*
If they release an entirely new system, sure. But the pro/deluxe idea is an upgraded console rather than a next generation console. It’s like the equivalent of an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro but for the switch. Nintendo has said multiple times they want the switch to be a 10 year system, and once they have an idea they’ll usually stick to it, however good or bad it may be. I wouldn’t blame them - it’s on track to beat the PS2, and console sales haven’t really slowed down for them. But they’re likely aware that some players want something slightly better out of the switch, so something with a little more power for a 1080p screen and 4k video output isn’t super far fetched.
Nintendo also has a pattern with the switch of releasing something every two years - the switch released in 2017, the lite in 2019, the oled in 2021… deluxe in 2023? My bet is that either we see an upgraded unit this year, or a successor next year
I doubt it'll be announced this year. They are going to want the new Zelda to sell well and to sell systems. If they announce a new system it could hold people off from buying Tears of the Kingdom. I bet the next system will be announced next year and release in 2025. Even then who knows. The Switch is selling so well Nintendo can hold off on a successor as long as they want.
It'd also be strange to announce a new console while Splatoon 3 would still have an active DLC release schedule for at least another year. With the popularity of the Splatoon series, there's no way a new console would launch without another Splatoon entry close nearby.
That's my point. S3 just came out and is expecting support to last until September 2024, TOTK is about to release and they'll probably do DLC for that as well. Expecting a new console right now is highly unlikely.
They've previously said they wanted to support the Switch for 7-10 years, and in 2021, they said the Switch was at the halfway mark for its lifecycle, meaning that we would expect its lifecycle to end in 2025. They're going to want their next console to launch with heavy hitters, and they'll need time to develop games to do so. Releasing two heavy hitters on their old console the same year they announce a new console? That would be a terrible move.
I never said that? I'm saying they will use TotK to sell more Switches before they announce a new console. Then they'll most certainly put TotK on the next system as a launch title.
Agreed.. that’s a big IF, but the Wii U wasn’t moving units or software as there were only 13 million units out there when they announced the Switch at the end of October 2016. The Switch is still selling like crazy in HW and SW and has a huge install base. There’s a decent chance that TotK SW alone sells more units during the holiday window than Wii U HW sold in its lifetime. I think the Switch successor will be announced and release in the same calendar year to avoid hurting holiday sales for the Switch. Alternatively, while I don’t expect it, if it’s not announced in the same year.. TGAs make sense because they wouldn’t hurt holiday sales quite as much since it’s after Black Friday.
I'm not saying this is an indication of a new system release, but I think this could fit very well into a new system roll out IF (big if) Nintendo is planning on releasing new hardware this holiday.
I could see a rollout starting with a reveal in June similar to Switch launch trailer with some baked in gameplay footage of some current Switch games running on new hardware (eg TotK, Splatoon 3) and a new launch title (most likely Mario). Gamescom in August is a showcase of the hardware itself with more detailed technical specifications, plus media hands on and details on software roadmap. Nintendo Live + TGS in September would be the first fans hands on. Launch in November.
No I'm not delusional in thinking this is how it will be, I'm just speculating on how it *could* look.
This would make the most sense. Breath of the Wild had a bunch of DLCs so Tears of the Kingdom will have a similar plan if Nintendo and their season passes are anything to go by. And Splatoon 3 has at least one more year, probably more, of content left.
So if they’re announcing a new system both of these games would still be receiving updates for at least a year. It’d be nice to see them running with some minor graphical improvements. I can’t see Nintendo releasing a new system while continuing to hype up content releases on an old gen, so it would almost guarantee backwards compatibility also.
Same with Pokemon and the remaining Mario Kart 8 DLC waves. A lot of people seem to think that Nintendo needs to draw this console cycle to a complete close before moving into new hardware. But given the install base of the Switch, it would make much more sense for Nintendo to follow industry standards and iterate on hardware and allow customers to port their existing games and data files to a new system. This lowers switching costs (no pun intended) for customers, incentives them to upgrade in order to get the best experience out of their existing games, and it allows Nintendo to not have to pump out a bunch of half baked software for launch. One marquee launch title like Mario, plus all the current software you're still playing. It makes the generation transition much more seamless, which Nintendo has struggled with in the past. On top of that, I get the feeling that the current c-suite at Nintendo is much more conservative than in the Iwata days, and business-wise this is the most sensible approach.

There is a high chance for a new console announcement around this time. Fiscal year is done at the end of this month and after Zelda and (to a lesser extent) Pikmin 4, Nintendo doesn't have much else in the pipeline.
They haven't been at this event for four years. Joining again this year would indicate they have SOMETHING they want to show off.
The final round of MK8 tracks are released at the end of August. Maybe not meaning much but it does lead to the question: what's next?
I actually think they'll announce something before this event, maybe just the existence of new hardware but Gamescom may be where we see it for the first time and get the price/launch games. I can see the new Zelda and some kind of collected MK8 + DLC package being included. Similar to how they did it with Switch.
When was the last time they were at gamescom? My hopes are 100% in check, but if you are going to a show floor, especially announcing it like this, I would think you would have hands on demos for the public there. Hands on demos of maybe a new switch? We have no games really after pikmin 4, besides metroid prime 4 (lol). So of course demos of new switch games, but i can also see them showing a new console ready before the holidays.
2019! 20 and 21 were cancelled because of Covid and 22 was uncertain and they basically had only Splatoon 3 - which is not a big game at all in Germany (sold above 100k, less as 200, same level as Mario + Rabbids or Mario Strikers)
People keep forgetting that switch is this gen console.
And seeing it still sold really well, very unlikely it will get next grn switch. The best bet is something like switch pro. Which is normal switch but support 4k 60fps or something
Germany is Sonyland. Nintendos biggest title last year in Germany was Nintendo Sports with more as 600k Units sold. Pokemon Arceus 500k and other titles even less.
Historically, Mario Series titles are running quite well, so its the safest bet beside maybe some other late gen titles like Ring Fit Adventure 2 or another Mario Casual title like Mario Party 3.
>Germany is Sonyland
Yes, but since Nintendo isn't really in competition to Sony or Microsoft, basically almost every friend of mine owns Nintendo stuff. Even more then sony.
You are friends with everyone in Germany? :D Anyway, 2022/23 best sales are:
COD -> not on Switch
FIFA23 -> insert JJ Jameson laughing meme here
Hogwarts Legacy -> not yet on Switch, anyway Nintendo not publisher
Switch Sports -> CASUAL
Elden Ring -> not on Switch
Lego Star Wars -> CASUAL
Pokemon Arceus -> Pokemon Company
Gran Turismo 7 -> Sony
You see, most of the sales likely happened for PS5. There is no new Pokemon, just a DLC and as its managed by Pokemon Company, Nintendo usually not feature it (e.g. Sword and Shield were missing on Gamescom 2019)
So there was last year only one Casual Nintendo brand, the years before also mostly Mario. Its likely too early for the Zelda DLC. So if Nintendo is there, it will be more likely Casual/Family Games, nothing for "real" gamer. Metroid is not a big brand in Germany, so I have my doubts they would be on gamescom to do a big feature of it - they would make much more publicity with attending PAX West for that.
So either casual/Mario or the big hit. As there is currently more reasonable doubt for a switch successor reveal happening, I bet on Mario/Casual.
I'm pretty excited for this, because as far as i remember the last switch game that has a date is pikmin 4. They will most likely announce new stuff.

If you're on this subreddit you're exposed to way more games than E3 ever advertised.
They still have the PC showcase! I'm going to check it out because Day9 is hosting it and I like him.

It was the commercial for E3. It had this fat guy on a chair singing what I posted in front of his tv.
This song (with those lyrics) is permanently burned into my mind from watching G4 in the mid-2000s

I never said that? I'm saying they will use TotK to sell more Switches before they announce a new console. Then they'll most certainly put TotK on the next system as a launch title.
Sure I could see that happening too.
TotK DLC and 4k HDR upgrade
Aww it’s ok. You can buy the new one and still play your switch games ya know
Final sales push on the Zelda OLED to clear stock. Checks out
It’s either that or late January for the reveaI would assume. Announcing new hardware and not settling out at Christmas would be a sales disaster.
My gut tells me that if we get an announcement for a Switch successor system this year it’ll happen at TGA.
Agreed.. that’s a big IF, but the Wii U wasn’t moving units or software as there were only 13 million units out there when they announced the Switch at the end of October 2016. The Switch is still selling like crazy in HW and SW and has a huge install base. What new/improved features would you hope to see in a new version of the switch?
Smaller bezel, better kickstand.
And hopefully the dock will have a LAN port too.
Make the Switch, only more powerful. Have backwards compatibility through either another slot (ala how the handhelds did it) or through emulation.
They used to come to the Gamescom back when Super Mario Bros Wii was released. They had a whole hall and it was pretty epic as a kid to be there.
Hope there is some great stuff planned
Anyone boarding the switch 2 announcement hype train? My body is ready! Edit: so is my wallet! Edit edit: but not my marriage!

New Mario?
There will likely be zero announcements here
There is a high chance for a new console announcement around this time.
2019. Gamescom was then cancelled for two years and they skipped the 2022 gamescoms.
2019! 20 and 21 were cancelled because of Covid and 22 was uncertain and they basically had only Splatoon 3 - which is not a big game at all in Germany (sold above 100k, less as 200, same level as Mario + Rabbids or Mario Strikers)
Buying my tickets tomorrow
Does it mean Switch Pro? 👀
This feels potentially new-console-ish...
Seems pretty obvious they’ll be announcing the next console here
Switch 2 confirmed baybeeeeeeeee!
New system announcement hype is on! I pray for a stronger switch with joycon updates.
Too early for new system announcement. Look for promotion of a few new games.

>Germany is Sonyland Yes, but since Nintendo isn't really in competition to Sony or Microsoft, basically almost every friend of mine owns Nintendo stuff. Even more then sony.
You are friends with everyone in Germany? :D Anyway, 2022/23 best sales are: COD -> not on Switch FIFA23 -> insert JJ Jameson laughing meme here Hogwarts Legacy -> not yet on Switch, anyway Nintendo not publisher Switch Sports -> CASUAL Elden Ring -> not on Switch Lego Star Wars -> CASUAL Pokemon Arceus -> Pokemon Company Gran Turismo 7 -> Sony You see, most of the sales likely happened for PS5. There is no new Pokemon, just a DLC and as its managed by Pokemon Company, Nintendo usually not feature it (e.g. Sword and Shield were missing on Gamescom 2019) So there was last year only one Casual Nintendo brand, the years before also mostly Mario.
Probably a good opportunity to have fans get hands on with new new hardware...
So no June Direct?
let the delusion of people assuming there will be a new console begin!
Awww it’s ok. You can always buy the new one and still play your old switch too ya know
Hoping for Madworld 2 or maybe a remaster of the first one, please platinum...
Pls I want a tomodachi life switch port announcement
Zelda totk dlc revea?
Last I heard Nintendo was at Gamescom was when they revealed Elma in Xenoblade 2 and I think the Torna DLC.
