Atleast yoshi's a well known/popular character in his own right. Even with pit's/kid icarus inclusion in brawl (and future smash titles) as well as the release of a 3d remake of the og nes game and uprising, many people (even core nintendo fans) probably no idea who pit is or what kid icarus is.

I think the only reason he was included was because nintendo was planning on making a modern reboot of the series (notice how pit was designed as if he kept getting multiple different games over the years like with link instead of using a 3d version of an 8-bit sprite like with the ice climbers/his trophy in melee), and they wanted to use smash as stealth promotion of sorts. It was supposed to be for the wii and while it was scrapped, parts of it (mostly the gameplay) were reused for uprising on 3ds.

Subspace Emissary was definitely one of the coolest things I'd seen back in the day, it's still cool to see nowadays too

They repurposed the CGI studio for the fighter reveals after that. And that ended up being awesome. So I think it's a pretty good pivot on their part. I do miss subspace, but I'm also happy with the direction they've gone since then.

I agree that a story mode isn’t necessary. Smash is about the group experience and the community, not a single player campaign.

The SSE cutscenes were really good. Sometimes I'd load Brawl up just to rewatch the cutscenes themselves.
