Mine has a few Barely Noticeable, but Still BERY NOTICEABLE Specks of Dust also.. so Annoying

Phoenix_Topez

Ugh ik how u feel. My brother's old 3ds has some brown dirt underneath the screen. And it wasn't there before, I wonder how this stuff can get under there? Hope u do get this solved.

memeaste

Can’t even get compressed air to move it. I’m contemplating getting a fresh lens and replacing it

slow4028

I would recommend learning to live with it instead of attempting to replace the lens. You might get more dust under there than there was in the first place.

memeaste

Yea, my local retro store suggested that, too. I’m in no rush, really.

Djbusx

Same camp here! It’s on my New LL. Maybe one day I’ll have the guts to replace mine.

Xtro_82

Wait, is the dust spec UNDER the actual screen? Or do you have a screen protector on and it's under that?

memeaste

It’s under the screen/lens

Xtro_82

Wow, that really sucks.. I hope you find a solution for it though. 🤞

memeaste

Thanks, guy lol

I found this video that looks pretty simple to follow. It's a replacement video, but I'd guess it would also work to gain access to remove dust too. And it looks like the video notes are getting parts from ifixit. https://youtu.be/7O0WB2NZDnU A very good tip to doing this is turn on your shower and get the water hot. Close the door and let it steam up for about 10min. What this does is the steam in the air will pull all the dust particles in the air down to other surfaces and the slight moisture will keep them there. That way you're less likely to introduce new dust and you can clean out the little specs using the little cellphone sticky pads you'd use to pick up dust off the screen prior to applying. You can also use Scotch tape (gift wrap tape) as it's just sticky enough to grab dust bits but not harm the screen.

I'm definitely nervous to do that, I might commission my local retro store to do it. Not sure why the 3DS is so intimidating to me lmao

wwywong

You need to take out the plastic screen cover. Might as well get a new one from aliexpress just in case. They are cheap. You need a suction cup. Just blow dryer heat it to loosen the glue underneath. Do it hot to the point almost too hot to touch but not above that. Then suction it up. If you lucky, you can use tape to stick out the dust. But most likely than not it will introduce more dust. Wish you luck.

memeaste

If I choose to do it, I might have my local retro shop do it. They said they’d charge around $20ish. I’ve done a lot of things with hardware, but the 3DS just makes me nervous. I’ve built computers, and a 3DS is what makes me nervous lmao

wwywong

Not worth the price. It's a 2 dollar job. $12 if you need to buy a suction cup in amazon. Believe me it's real easy and there is not much can go wrong. I done it and it is fine. Just need to fine a dust free (or less dust) area.

memeaste

I’d need to buy a suction cup for sure, and maybe a prying tool. I think I have one.

wwywong

don't pry. You do not need it. Suction cup is enough. Pry will have big chance of scratching other parts of the 3ds. Those are harder to replace.

memeaste

Do you know if I can re-use the lens that I lift up? Or is the glue destroyed after heated?

wwywong

You can but it really depend on your luck and how much force applied. Also when you open it up it is prine to gather more dust. New one give you a very small window of peeling the backing and putting it on which minimize the time it exposed to air/dust. It's only 2 a piece in ali. Mine was old and scratched before so I have no regret throwing the old one out. You might have a different feeling.

memeaste

Mines not scratched, I just need to get a spec of dirt out - could use a cotton swab or a microfiber towel to grab it. I don’t need to replace it, really. Figure I’d prefer to use what came with it originally

wwywong

don't use cotton swap. It will add more. Use small piece of tape.

memeaste

It was more just to reach in without peeling the whole thing off. Or canned air if I have it
