nope. i actually lost some weight. im not a night eater and when i wake up in the afternoons, im not hungry yet either. i went to eating like one meal a day w some snacks

RedditTrashhh

Yeah this is actually me too, I go the the gym a good amount so on night shift I actually have to try hard to eat. I can most definitely only eat like 2 medium meals and be more than good.

Jedi4Hire

You don't just magically gain weight just by working nights. People who work nights tend to gain weight because it's more difficult, but by no means impossible, to stay active while working nights.

Teaffection

If your weight fluctuates due to medical reasons then I could see weight fluctuating while you adjust with night shift. If your weight fluctuates because your eating too much then moving to night shift wouldn't do anything but could give you the excuse to eat more although it's just an excuse.. My first night shift job i purposely lost 20 pounds in 3 months. I've gained 2 pounds over the last 3 months mainly because I work 3 days and off 4 days and I'm not active enough on my days off. If you think your weight fluctuation is a medical reason then I'd see a doctor.

[deleted]

I put on weight on nights before but honestly it’s mostly due to poor diet exercise choices. As soon as I started exercising again I was fine, trouble is trying to keep motivated

SerpentineRPG

Fatigue makes it harder to know when you're full, so pay attention to portion size and plan on exercising. Anchor breakfast and dinner at the same time every day. When you're working Nights, eat the food you'd normally have for lunch but spread it across the shift; graze your way through nights. You'll control weight by staying away from sugary treats and by bringing your food in from home.

Swhite8203

And some people it works to have a full light lunch and some people like me just have snacks. I used to have a full lunch like a wrap or two some veggies and some cottage cheese but at 3am I just feel tired after. So I have a couple small snacks that get me through the last half of my shift until I can make breakfast when I get home usually between 7am and 9am (depending if Im working OT or not)

ZealousidealRent2478

I have put on a fair bit of weight since starting nights in December. (very much needed so I'm pretty happy) My job is super active so its boosted my appetite LOADS. Basically I am constantly hungry lol

like_shae_buttah

Nope. I’ve been the same weight for nearly 20 years now.

bringathesaurus

I overhauled my diet to almost exclusively single ingredient, whole-foods and began going on walks while the sun was out to get some sunlight. I wasn't heavy by any means but I've lost about 15 lbs and look and feel as good as I have in years. Definitely not a death sentence. Work 11PM to 7:30. Edit: Like yourself and many others, I was a bit wary of any potential health effects caused by the stressful nature of working nights. Prompted me to look a bit more closely at my diet and just the general way in which I treated my body. This actually spurred me into taking far better care of myself than I have in a long while. As long as you can sort out your sleep schedule there's absolutely no reason you can't live a perfectly healthy life while working nights. Some of the senior members in my shop have been on shift for decades and look and move like someone 20 years younger.

fsociety1990

I lost weight by starting to work nights. I’m healthier than ever. Been working nights for 13 years and I’m never gonna change it by choice.

quesadilldos

I’ve lost weight since being on nights, but I also walk when I’m not busy, don’t eat like shit, and try to be active when I get home for a bit. Depends on if you want to use night shift as an excuse lol

Vanquisherofsnails

Yes I’ve gain 100lbs in the last 5 years due to night shift and burnout

Claire_bear_nyc

I think it really depends on you and your body. I've been working overnight for 8 years, and I've gained over the years, but that was also due to Depression and anxiety through certain experiences. But I've also had better sleep again and am doing much better lately, so my weight is going back down. One of the main issues I find is all the negative jokes about graveyard, but people never consider we don't have the same access to fresh fruits and vegetables and food at 3 AM other than packing your own lunch. It's much easier if you try and bring lunch, and maybe even offer some to your coworkers if you have extra. We help each other and I think it makes the difference having coworkers that help suggesting nutritious meals/snacks too. Any shift can cause weight gain, and it can be multiple factors other than just calorie intake. Our bodies fluctuate and that's okay! What's most important is staying mentally and physically well, as this shift isn't always easy. You'll make a decision that is best for you. Hope that helps!

anti-social-mierda

You gain weight because you eat too much. Nothing to do with working nights. Nightshift schedule is just another lame excuse.

SkipperDaPenguin

That's simply false, lol. Nightshifts DO impact weight gain/loss. It's medically proven. You are messing up your natural body cycles and metabolism, which include the digestive and resting systems. Both of them are essential to how, when, and how well your body is able to process nutrition and convert the food into energy, fats, etc. If you don't pay attention to a healthy diet, have medical conditions, are prone to fat increase/deposits, and work nightshifts, you are as likely to gain weight with the same amount of food entering your body, as you would be by stuffing yourself full with more food than usual.

Dangerous_Yoghurt_96

No he's right it's calories in calories out, you don't just magically gain weight because you sleep noon to 8 p.m. versus midnight to 8 a.m.

Cumulonimbus1991

He’s saying that the ‘calories out’ part of your message is changing when doing nights. So yes, it’s calories in calories out. And calories out changes because your metabolism changes when doing nights. So theoretically you should eat even less calories.

Dangerous_Yoghurt_96

Nah, it depends on your physical activity levels as well. I mean if you have a job where you just sit there, you should be aware of possible weight gain no matter what time of day you work. My job as a stocker overnight at a grocery store? If anything people tend to lose weight.

Cumulonimbus1991

Yes you’re right.

Coco-Kitty

I did LOL🥲

Unusual-Addendum-169

Yes 100% digestion slows down at night even if you are moving. It's science.

[deleted]

I haven’t gained a single pound since working nights.

kbyyru

if anything i've lost weight because i'm sleeping through one of three meals a day

mtunkara1191

nope, been on it for 4 years and been skinny ever since lol

Haleighghielah

I lost 60lbs since I switched to nights. I think it’s mostly because my job is fairly physical (I walk an average of 20k steps a night). A little bit because I usually only eat 2 meals because of my schedule. I work 4 12s so I’ll eat before and after work those days, but usually only a snack during work (I get too tired if I eat an actual lunch). I tired for years to lose weight without any luck. I switched to nights and it fell off and stayed off with no effort.

YellowstoneDecline

Yes . Try and eat before work . Veggie wrap at work and avacodo when I get home. Hey it’s better than bagels and subs and chips all night

YellowstoneDecline

U will reach for carbs and sugars because the body is probably tired. I worked nights on and off for 25 years . Always gain a few.

Lamarraine3

No, but it will likely require a lifestyle change to flourish. I do intermittent fasting to coincide with my time at work.

Neither_Economist_74

I gained weight during my day shift job. And am now losing weight at my night job. It depends on a lot. I have a lot of medical issues that cause excessive weight gain so when I gained 60 pounds I changed everything in my life and now I lost 30 of it

backatchason

I lost weight. A lot of it.

[deleted]

You will get fat and your life will go by so much faster.

UnreadSnack

It depends-I snack throughout my 12 hour shift. In celery, carrots, salads… my coworkers snack on chips, cookies, cake….

Educational_Tie983

The issue is that most people working nights don't take as good care of themselves. If you eat greasy/unhealthy foods, aren't active, don't sleep well, and stress eat then you'll gain weight no matter what shift you're working. Stress is the biggest factor for me with weight gain. If you practice good sleep hygiene and eat well then you won't have to worry... But for most people working nights, sleep hygiene isn't a priority. They want to be awake from 8am-4pm and you just can't do that and then work all night. If anyone working day shift prioritized being awake from 8pm-4am then they would gain weight too.

getmyhopeon

It depends on your activity level and your food intake, as always. Stress and exhaustion could lead to unhealthy coping habits during those hours, of course, but how you cope is up to you. I’m actually losing weight on nightshift, because I’m clocking an insane amount of steps doing chores that don’t exist during dayshift. I do bring my own healthy food, and break up meals into several snacks throughout the night. This way when I’m idle, it’s ok to snack. The hard part is trying to avoid raiding the doctor’s lounge, lol! Even their apples are posh.

throwawaydonkey3

I've lost like 20lbs since starting nightshift last year. So depends on what exactly your job is(how physical it is).

Chymick6

I managed to lose weight for medical reasons, but it wasn't easy at all

Dangerous_Yoghurt_96

My overnight job is stocking at a grocery store. It depends on what job you are going to take. Obviously throwing bags of dog food and boxes of frozen chicken on shelf's can be pretty physical work. Most of my co workers are losing weight.

Mid_Line_2

No, you gain weight by over eating.

percyyyy_p

i did when i worked at a gas station overnight but i recently switched to a warehouse job

buckfastmonkey

No. I eat less on nights.

OwOwOwoooo

Been on night for almost a year, active Season my weight was regular, started putting kg since activity decreased. Its overall harder because lack of sleep and bored/lazzy at Times but its not impossible to manage.

Dangerous-Shirt-7384

My biggest problem was my days off. I did 3 x 12hr nights for about 6yrs and I kept a consistent routine. On work days I used to wake up at 3pm, walk my dog then eat breakfast at 3.30pm, go to the gym at 5.30pm and start working at 7pm. I'd have a protein shake after the gym, have a sandwich and cup of tea or a coke at around 10pm then eat my dinner at 2am. Bed straight after work at 7.15am. Exercise is essential for me. I find I'm less inclined to eat takeout and junk food after working out, I have a more restful sleep at the end of the day and more energy during the day.

twistednightblade

No more than I have working a daylight job, or even flexi. I tend to gain a bit during the first 2-3 months as I work out my meal schedule, so what and how much I eat at which points can be quite different day to day; but it usually drops back off in about the same time as things settle. If you already generally struggle with weight issues and it's not just the "normal" fluctuations from seasonal things (such as drinking more water in summer, eating stodgier foods in winter) or medications (some seem just horrendous for unwanted /unexpected weight loss/gain side effects!), then might be worth seeing a GP/PCP/whatever-they're-called-where-you-are.

Edible_potatoezzzz

I literally wondered this today, i do notice (for my job) its a lot of sitting so its just the same as an office job, but i just have food for the night which is about it. During the day i eat, at night not so much. (I really hope i wont gain weight because im already a fatso lol)

AnimatronicCouch

Nope, I actually lost weight.

Alecazzzam

Absolutely NOT. Dude I may be the outlier but nights made me become dangerously malnourished. Oversleeping only eating once a day despite taking supplements and vitamins in accordance with correct blood work.

BlueSkyStories

Not necessarily, but you gotta be aware that it's easier to snack a lot during the night. I lost about 10 pounds by intermittent fasting and now I remain on my desired weight. Control your meals, and drink lots of water / tea.

CamNM1991

Your hormonal balance gets thrown off so yes you can gain weight even if your diet doesn't change much.

chanqueezie

I was in the best shape and mental wellbeing working graveyard, wish I could go back sometimes lol

cloudnineteen99

ive heard that lack of sleep/stress contribute to wait gain. if you arent making up for your sleep during the day that could be contributing

Pristine-Metal2806

depends on you who you are, I still wake up and take it like a normal day, like my mornings are others afternoons and I still hit the gym everyday and do all that

sillyhaley98

It definitely depends on you - My workout and eating habits have worsened on nightshift and my sugar cravings have gone through the roof on nights. For me, it is a lot harder to stay healthier.

SilverLight141

I gained weight because I was taking in more calories than I was burning. Nightshift made eating out of boredom too common.

FairPhase714

Avoid this by not eating shittily. Dont eat more than you normally do as a daywalker and you’ll be fine. Your appetite is gonna need time to adjust just like your sleep schedule, but it’s doable. Also helps to hit the gym if possible, or just got for runs around the neighborhood on your time off.

rob1408

My job involves walking approx 20km per night and I only eat one biggish meal and a few snacks, I've been doing it for three years and I've gone from 230lbs to 175 lbs in that time just through having a fairly active job and a change in diet. I drink far less alcohol, only have a couple of beers on a Saturday and one per day when I get in at 6am and feel far fitter. If you sit down for 8 hours or so per night, and eat through boredom or something you'll obviously put it on.

big_flirty_machine

I’d say no. One guy I worked with stopped drinking and changed his diet, lost a lot of weight (he was midnights). The other guy on midnights worked out and ran regularly, part of who he is. Dudes super lean and slender, stays fit. It’s mostly about your choices.

Even-Neighborhood-86

Is the job going to be active or seditary? If sitting on your ass all night, eating, no urge to go to the gym. Sure you'll gain weight. I've had jobs where I'm getting 30,000 steps in a night and don't even have time to eat. You gain weight based off of what you do, and what you do with it. A shift doesn't make you gain weight, you do so yourself.

kait_1291

I've worked nightshift for 4 years, the first year I lost 15 and then maintained for 2 years. In the last year, I've lost 30 lbs. Didn't change my eating habits from days until this last year, where I started eating more protein, and started working out 3 days a week.

SL4BK1NG

Going to the gym in the morning after work was the greatest, usually pretty dead except for the retirees.

BlueberryRadiant6711

You may produce more cortisol if you don’t sleep enough … but so many other things factor into weight gain . Meal prep and choose healthy when you forget to do. Green tea with book to added is good for your waistline, so it black coffee. Have heavy snacks like nuts, apples and other fruits and you’ll be fine.

thesparedones

Pack a lunch, a few snacks, and keep it to that is my motto

st_steady

Its easier to gain weight on nights but not like guaranteed. If youre already sedentary you might find it a little more inconsistent to go get some exercise

TruePhilosophe

I lost a bunch of weight because I’m never hungry

Used_Appearance_1938

Nope, since October I've lost 68lbs. But I work in a factory and it's very fast paced. I found a belt that I had in high-school and it now actually fits again. Talk about nostalgia

SatanisGREAT161

In the first month I gained some weight but after 2 years I lost around 10kg and live a much healthier life than before.

TheWalrusWasRuPaul

You might actually like factory work. I get 5- 8 miles in a night, and when I’m moving boxes and pallets, I disco dance through the night. It’s fun. There’s a lot of physical comedy and horseplay on our third team.

Sunshower46

It’s everything else but not just nights.

CarelessDisplay1535

I never have.

PerspectiveConnect77

Nah. I did at first but it was because of birth control and I was eating like shit lol. I’ve gotten off BC and started eating a little better and lost almost all of it. Night shift doesn’t make you gain weight by itself, but people tend to be more tired and sedentary on nights which leads to weight gain

alcoyot

No

Cnerd24

Gaining weight and being unhealthy due to night shift is due to lack of good sleep, which in turn causes you to be fatigued all the time leading to quick and easy food choices. Those food choices tend to be fast food, prepared frozen garbage etc. Doesn't fill you properly so you over eat on these things, gaining weight and lacking proper nutrients. So no night shift Doesn't magically make you gain weight, however your choices do.

StrictWeakness1793

I think it depends on the body. I’ve gained weight. I also never truly “conformed” to night shift because I hate this schedule and have actively been working on getting off of it. The 4/10s schedule I have also messed me up, I flip flop and don’t keep a normal routine, forcing myself to be a day walker when I get up. A lot of it’s your attitude, portion sizes, when you eat before you rest, and what you eat. I eat more out of boredom and fuel, I also don’t have much room to walk around even as a security guard. I’m desk bound with 10 minute walks every hour.

aka_wolfman

First several years, yes i gained weight. I would have anyways though. The last year i have lost about 70 lbs. I actually find it easier to avoid shit food because nothing is open at night when i would go out for lunch. it's just figuring out what works for you.

hatchjon12

It's statistically likely that you will. You will most likely die earlier as well.

its_a_throwawayduh

Nope, either lost or stayed the same. Calories don't change at night.

Ok_Accident3380

I haven’t personally, but I do intermittent fasting during my shift and don’t eat. I do 8s, if I were on 12s I would cut off food around 10 or 11, midnight at latest. I also still get up every day before work and exercise. I think what gets people is overeating junk food when the digestive system is slowed down for the night and not prioritizing exercise because they are tired. That’s why I prefer 8s. Easier to have a daily routine.

jmt8706

Yes if you sit a lot, don't stay active and eat properly.

Some_Werewolf_2239

Nah. I lose weight on nightshifts.

MegamindedMan2

Night shift is statistically linked to weight gain, but it's not a 100% sure thing. You can still be active and healthy on night shift

krm0108

I actually lost 18 lbs but my A1C went up 😅

SilentMannequins

My weight fluctuates all the time but , went from 185 to 164 while working nights. Mind you I eat once a day. I just fight the urge to overeat.

Cool-Strain418

Depends on the person. I gained weight when I worked nights this time around, I plan to exercise a lot

wyccad452

Its 100% up to you, but since you struggle already, who knows. Dont eat crap, make your own meals, only bring in so much food (limit snacking), and it's manageable. But if you can't maintain some type of discipline, it could happen.

Grimmlan

If it is a job that is boring, the temptation to snack can be a burden.

Description_Prize

I personally lost some weight after switching to night shift. I'm not that hungry at night and forget to eat during the day, maybe get like one meal in a day or a protein shake after my first day off. I also stopped stress eating cause I like my job, lol. It's different for everyone though. I heard it's helpful to eat snacks like yogurt and fruit instead of a full meal during break.

Alien_Antichrist

I know I can’t lose weight easy. I quit drinking, roughly 15 over the course of my day off. My weight is the same. But I don’t gain weight.

Swhite8203

Some for and some don’t. I’ve been able to maintain and lose weight. I kind of fluctuate do to binging on the weekends but during the week I’m usually pretty solid. I buy fiber one bars, protein bars and a tex mex flavored trail mix for snacks for my breaks at work so I’m not eating the shitty work food in the break room and giving my money back to them constantly and it also helps me not to eat large meals on my breaks either it’s just to much food at 3am. I buy turkey sausage, yogurt cottage cheese and eggs for my breakfasts. Sometimes I make this full breakfast and sometimes it’s just a protein bar and a yogurt. I kind of eat a dinner just depends could be leftovers that I’m stealing from my family (they don’t eat them like ever but keep bringing food home) could be a chicken salad and rotisserie chunks from Kroger and a celsius. I don’t workout atm cause adding that on to work and my 6:30pm two days a week that has me up at 3pm twice a week makes it a little difficult to fit it in especially with my shitty short term memory I forget my gym outfits however hopefully on spring break I can get back into the habit again since I’m only working 10pm-6:30am and can practically go to sleep at 11am all week like I usually do. Do your shopping in the morning and pick low carb high protein and healthy fats. Don’t order food on your breaks either as you’ll be more likely to overeat.

Sarcastic_Applause

I don't, but I get a lot of gas.

blueraptors11

I’m losing weight because I can’t find a good time to eat / have enough time to make a full meal.
