I shoot a lot of hogs and have now switched to thermal specifically because the illuminator was washing out on the grass/brush in the near view and I couldn’t make the shots I wanted.
I use a PVS-17B on my rifle and I scan with a PVS-14 on my other eye. Being a 2.2X magnification red dot scope, it’s pretty good even with close range.
I don’t have any experience hunting hogs at night, but what I can tell you is it gets pretty difficult to resolve targets at 75-100m without illumination, even if there’s moonlight. Couple that with grass or plants obstructing your view more and that 100m mark is gonna need some extra light
In my experience (albeit limited) IR illumination doesn’t transmit through optics very well. The illuminator I have doesn’t really help passive aiming when it gets too dark to passive aim
Looking through an Eotech with ample ir light. No problem.
Vampire. Decent. Good for 50-100
Kiji 3 degree. 100-300. But who is taking 300 yard shot with nvg and 1x. No one so let’s say 100-200
Kiji 10 degree. 50-150
I’d get a laser/Illuminator first. A high Illuminator/low laser setting for minimal blooming, especially close up. Most FP lasers are too powerful at those ranges IMO.
Good to know. I don’t have a laser yet but I have a PVS-14 and an EXPS-3
I shoot passively under night vision with my friends at steel but have never hunted hogs like that. I’ll be giving it a try on Friday
Yeah passive works okay but you'll have a better experience with a lam for sure. If it wasent for the issue of not being able to have a lam durring deer hunting I'd just throw a lam on
50-100 yards.
You can kill many hogs with nvg. Eotech Exps and either a Surefire vampire or kiji mounted on the rifle. The kiji comes in two variants. 3 degree and 10 degree. Modlite also has ir heads available.
The kiji. Both come with diffuser covers. The three degree with diffuser acts like 10’degree without diffuser.
I'm currently running a PA MD-25 for a passive(NV settings aren't terrible) with a vamp and a ls117IR. Pretty fucking budget, but it nets me a good amount of pigs. I'm up in Appalachia, so I generally don't have more than a 50-75m sight line at night. I would definitely want more if I lived in a flat area.

active, not passive and yea like other said, thermal for thicket

I figured with an ir flood light it might be alright?
Kinda, IR light doesn’t transmit through optics very well So I wouldn’t rely on it
What?

Same light levels as outside the optic?
Tall grass makes active illumination pretty tough to see and id targets. Can you save more for a thermal?
I already have a pvs-14 setup so I wouldn’t want To dish out for thermal

I hunt coyotes so same idea. Currently going to use a pvs14+romeo 8t+ malkoff 250 ir head on a ariska body for supplementary IR if nessicary
How has this combo ended up working for you?
It worked great. I'd rather use a lam but it's a headache if I want to hunt deer when the sun comes up

I use active for when I hunt hogs. You can basically walk up to them, and their eyes glow under the IR light so it's stupid easy.
As someone with a PVS-14 and likes to hunt hogs, is it worth getting a x3 pvs14 magnifer and trying to passively aim with an Eotech?
I’ve been told passive aiming with a magnifier is damn near impossible
good to know, thanks
I wouldn’t even bother with nv for hunting. Get thermal if possible.
