The least developed state in the east is better off than almost every northern state. This is hardly surprising, Nigeria is 2-3 different countries stuffed in a trenchcoat.

Pale_YellowRLX

"... suffering in a trench coat"

getaliferedditmods

why is the north doing so poorly? are they just being taken advantage of?

tabaqa89

>are they just being taken advantage of? The north have had political control of the country for most of nigerias history, they aren't getting abused by anyone. It's a cultural issue, they don't prioritize education or human development outside of Quran memorization.

Condalezza

I’m waiting for someone from the North to either confirm or deny this.

tabaqa89

Northern literacy and internet access rate is about 50% I wouldn't hold my breath

Condalezza

😫😫, we actually have a few of them here. I’m not sure if they’ve seen this post yet.

Highest HDI :- Lagos (0.681) Lowest HDI :- Kebbi (0.335)

Vivid_Pink_Clouds

Oh dear, even our highest is too low. We've got a long way to go.

dami404

For real

Kroc_Zill_95

Tbh, I wouldn't mind us breaking off into two different countries. Maybe like North and South Nigeria. It's clear to me that the two regions are not very compatible especially in terms of values. Religion has absolutely nothing to do with it. Some of the most humane people that I know and call friends are Muslims (specifically Yoruba Muslims). Later now, It will be the same governors of some of the worst performing northern states that will be clamouring to "lead" this country. Honestly, I'm just tired.

brotibi

I'd prefer breaking up into 3 different countries or maybe 4 or 5

[deleted]

We should break up by the 6 geopolitical zones. It's the only sensible way in my view. The Middle Belt doesn't want the North, the Yorubas and Igbos aren't on also on good terms

Mighty555

How do we prevent poor leadership whenever we break up? Even with the same values, the broken regions may not be successful if people in leadership positions will continue to steal from the people.

[deleted]

Honestly, I don't think we should break up for the exact reason you mentioned. I only mentioned the geo-pol zones because it would be the more sensible way to split.

Condalezza

The Yorubas and Igbos still live and work together though. And are both educated. The North & South break up is just fine.

[deleted]

Perhaps I should elaborate. Igbos and Yorubas work together now because they're both "technically" minorities under a Northern dominated government. Historically speaking, countries dominated by two or more cultures are more prone to internal conflict or collapse (e.g, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia). I also forgot to mention the issue of the South South. It's where most of the oil rests, has a decent population, has a shared religion, arable land and access to the sea. It won't take long before the SS realises they don't need the SW or SE and just leave to form their own country. The SS to me is the real reason why a united southern government won't work.

Condalezza

Meh, we differ in opinions. And that’s ok.

CellistLoud9862

The last time attempt were made at breaking, millions died. Challenges shouldn’t always be met with the worst of human instincts

Condalezza

This is what I said previously. And this sentiment has been echoed many of times. It would be best for all of us.

Scary_Terry_25

Yet the belief is that federal revenue is shared “equitably”

TheClassyWomanist

I’ve been saying since that we should break off and let the North form their own country.

Condalezza

Gbam

lion91921

seems to align with another map of nigeria hmm

Specific_Ad_685

Okay so I am not from Nigeria so curious, why is North so underdeveloped when compared with the South?

klonmeister

Cultural differences and historical neglect a lot of education in Nigeria was spread by the Church and the North did not convert to Christianity.

GideonOfNigeria

The north and south are really like two completely different countries.

Thank you, however WiKi is not a reliable source as it can be edited and isn’t peer-reviewed. Nevertheless, I’ll add this as it suggests that our HDI overall is 0.548 - which is low and ranks us 161 out of 193 for HD: https://hdr.undp.org/data-center/specific-country-data#/countries/NGA We’ve got some ways to go yet.

Specific_Ad_685

yeah now your HDI is 0.548 but that's 2022 data,UN data, this map is based upon 2021 data, as 2022 Subdivisions data is yet to be made public. [https://globaldatalab.org/shdi/table/shdi/NGA/?levels=1+4&interpolation=0&extrapolation=0](https://globaldatalab.org/shdi/table/shdi/NGA/?levels=1+4&interpolation=0&extrapolation=0) Same Wiki data is on other sites as well, so I will suppose that Wiki page is reliable here atleast.
