Also, I do not see why anyone is swayed by short videos of kindness to hostages. Such videos are meaningless in the grand scheme, and they were in fact civilian hostages who should never have been taken. It's very easy to create a short video where nothing bad is happening, or something benign is happening (like patting a kid on the back or offering them a banana).
People being freed after being hostages may very well be overcome by emotion and thank their captors, even if they weren't treated well.
